The Suspects: The initial evidence points to the singer. The Clues: Marlowe is hired to find the real killers and clear the singer's name. The investigation becomes increasingly dangerous, with additional murders occurring as Marlowe gets closer to the truth. The Link to "The King in Yellow": Leopardi was found wearing yellow silk pajamas, and the detective remarks about the dead body reminding him of a book he read called "The King in Yellow". The narrative unfolds with the mysterious King Leopardi, leading to a series of events that reveal threats, deadly encounters, and deep investigations, culminating in a final confrontation that ties together the various threads of the story.takeawaysThe character of Philip Marlowe embodies the classic detective archetype.King Leopardi's mysterious persona adds depth to the narrative.Threats and danger are prevalent in the world of crime. The investigation reveals unexpected connections between characters.A woman's role in the story highlights themes of power and vulnerability. The dialogue is rich with noir elements and suspenseful twists.Marlowe's interactions showcase his wit and intelligence. The story explores the consequences of love and betrayal. The final confrontation serves as a climax to the unfolding drama. The narrative structure allows for a fluid exploration of themes.

In this week's episode of "Tuesday Night Detectives" on Vintage Classic Radio, we delve into two thrilling classic radio dramas. First up, we explore "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" in the episode titled "The King in Yellow." Originally broadcast on July 8th, 1947, this episode follows the sharp-witted private detective Philip Marlowe, voiced by Gerald Mohr, as he navigates through a web of deceit and murder inspired by a mysterious play that drives its readers mad. Assisting Mohr in bringing this eerie tale to life are Jeff Corey, playing the role of a troubled actor, and Lurene Tuttle, portraying a distressed lover, with additional support from William Conrad's powerful portrayal of the villain. The episode weaves a narrative of suspense, literary intrigue, and dark secrets. Following that, we turn to "Crime and Peter Chambers," which aired on June 29th, 1954. In "The Bubbles Club" episode, detective Peter Chambers, played by Dane Clark, dives into a glamorous yet sinister world of a high-society nightclub where the champagne and dangers flow equally freely. Joining Clark in this episode are Bill Zuckert, portraying a club owner with much to hide, and Elaine Rost, as the charming yet enigmatic leading lady. Together, they unravel a plot filled with deceit, romance, and murder. This episode combines sharp wit with a dash of danger, making it a captivating listen for fans of classic detective stories. The Rebels Triad face off against an avatar of the madness god Hastur. But this chaotic, formidable foe may not be the most unstable threat around. Might it be one of their own? "Let the red dawn surmise / What we shall do, / When the blue starlight dies / And all is through." This short poem, an epigraph to "The Yellow Sign," arguably the most memorable tale in Robert W. Chambers' 1895 collection The King in Yellow, encapsulates in four brief lines the affect that drives cosmic horror: the fearful sense of imminent annihilation. In the four stories JF and Phil discuss in this episode, this affect, which would inspire a thousand works of fiction in the twentieth century, emerges fully formed, dripping with the xanthous milk of Decadence. What's more, it is here given a symbol, a face, and a home in the Yellow Sign, the Pallid Mask of the Yellow King, and the lost land of Carcosa. Come one, come all. "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" is a radio show that was broadcast from 1948 to 1951. The show is based on the character of Philip Marlowe, a private detective created by Raymond Chandler. On July 8th, 1947, NBC broadcast an adaptation of “The King In Yellow,” originally published in Dime Detective Magazine in March of 1938. It's a seedy saga of a hot trumpet player whose boorish behavior gets him killed. Among those featured in this episode were Gerald Mohr, Gloria Blondell, Bill Johnstone, Willard Waterman, and Howard McNear. By the late 1940s many of Chicago's radio stars had migrated to Hollywood, working on shows across all four networks. By the end of July, Marlowe's 8.0 rating was seventh overall, and the show's production cost just one dollar per the number of urban listeners.
