Nearly a decade ago, during National Novel Writing Month, bestselling nonfiction author Sarah Arthur let her imagination run free when she began writing Once a Queen, a novel that had been living in her imagination since the early 2000s. On January 30, 2024, her sparkling YA fantasy will be published by WaterBrook, the Penguin Random House imprint behind the Wingfeather Saga, the bestselling middle-grade series which has sold more than one million copies. Arthur's first venture into the world of fantasy makes sense, as her extensive knowledge of Lord of the Rings and active involvement in the C.S. Lewis Festival and Madeleine L'Engle Writing Retreats can be felt with the flip of every page — the story is richly woven, atmospheric, and captures the cozy magic akin to classics like The Secret Garden, The Chronicles of Narnia, and A Wrinkle in Time, while also telling a fresh and delightful world-weaving tale for wonder-hungry young minds. Readers are transported to the English countryside alongside Eva, the American teenage protagonist who secretly wishes fairy tales were true. Nevertheless, while spending the summer at her grandmother's mysterious English manor, unusual happenings in the gardens at night lead Eva to wonder if portals to alternate universes exist…and if her grandmother was once a queen in one of those worlds. Arthur was working through grief while writing this novel, and she hopes the intricate themes of generational wounds, redemption, and imagination will ease the young minds that pick up Once a Queen. Are you looking for fun, creative, and engaging ways to get your students excited about reading and writing? If so, this is the episode for you! I love coming up with creative ways that spark student engagement, and this time, they're spontaneous activities that include reading and writing. So I'm sharing how two activities boost daily reading and writing excitement in your elementary classrooms.I came to the conclusion that if I want students to enjoy reading and writing, I need to create opportunities that sparked joy in both of those areas. With that in mind, I remembered an activity from back when I was in school and adapted it to incorporate daily reading and writing that's spontaneous and fun. With each routine, I discuss the importance of it, benefits, the structure and expectations, and how to easily implement it in your classroom. We always create and develop lessons that focus on practicing and mastering literacy skills, but never develop ways that spark an initial love for literacy. However, with these two routines, you can spontaneously incorporate daily reading and writing in a way that increases their excitement and engagement with literacy. In 2017, many Americans watched in horror as violent images from the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville started spreading. A few short years later, My Monticello tells the story of Charlottesville neighbors fleeing racist violence and taking refuge in Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. The author, Jocelyn Johnson, talks about what it means to be writing about a past and a future that both feel very present and whether there's hope in writing about America's racism. Later in the show: Famous for the fatwa put on him by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, Salman Rushdie is still writing years later--but now from the United States. Pennie Ticen discusses Rushdie's past and the new kind of writing he's publishing as an American immigrant. Plus: On the surface, The Tigger Movie and Anne of Green Gables don't have a lot in common. But if you look a bit closer, they both touch on an incredibly popular theme in stories for kids: adoption. Kim Gainer explores why kids are so obsessed with reading about adoption and how these stories help shape who we are.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which means there's no better time to discuss the crucial role that reading and writing play in promoting good mental hygiene. Writing benefits us authors in a variety of ways, such as providing a mental workout for the brain, or serving as a cathartic outlet for dealing with personal traumas or toxic personalities in our lives. Meanwhile, well-written fiction can allow readers to more easily identify with our stories, allowing them to take inspiration in the struggles and triumphs of our characters and use them as inspiration in finding a path forward in their own lives. Today, romance author Amey Zeigler shares her personal experiences of using reading and writing to cope with mental health challenges. As a reader, Amey found that her connection to a novel she read helped her cope with the post-partum depression she was battling, and as an author, she discovered how her writing connected with and lifted the spirits of readers facing their own struggles. As Amey explains, authors that use their life experiences to create more powerful characters and stories can find deeper and more transformative connections to their readers. Not only could this be therapeutic for both, but often a strong and meaningful connection is all it takes for readers to start recommending your book to everyone they know, which can do far more for sales than any expensive ad campaign you might run.
