This recording from July 29, 2023. Signum MA student Christoph Schabert will present his thesis “Mágus saga jarls: A Digital Edition” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Christoph's thesis supervisor, Dr. Paul Peterson. Abstract An Old Norse-Icelandic genre that has long been relegated to the background of scholarly studies is the genre of riddarasögur. With the largest amount of surviving manuscripts, this genre was very popular among audiences of medieval Norse sagas. With 89 different manuscripts, Mágus saga jarls has the most attested witnesses of all riddarasögur. The saga exists in two recessions: a younger and an older one. The earliest surviving manuscript of the younger and longer recension is the subject of this edition. It is known under the shelfmark AM 567 XVII ß 4to and was written between c. 1390 and 1410. This version of the saga has been rendered into a three-layer transcription – facsimile, diplomatic, normalized – and is fully compliant with version 3 of Medieval Nordic Text Archive (Menota) standards. About the Presenter Christoph Schabert is a development operations engineer currently living and working in Germany. Growing up he loved reading fantasy and was always intrigued with old languages, which only deepened during his studies of Old Norse with Signum. His combination of a deep interest in language and a technical background made him a prime candidate to do a digital edition. About Signum Thesis Theaters Each of our master's students writes a thesis at the end of their degree program, exploring a topic of their choice. En: Gert and Liv were two unlikely companions, who, despite their differences, had a shared passion: the Viking Gilde Festival held annually in the Sognefjord. En: Every year, Gert, a strong and proud Viking man, made the pilgrimage to the Sognefjord, while Liv, a soft-spoken and gentle woman of Scandinavian descent, chose to stay close to home. En: This year, however, proved to be different. En: Liv had recently found out about her Viking ancestry and decided to join Gert in his journey. En: The two made their way to the Sognefjord, anticipation building in their chests as they thought of the celebrations that awaited them. En: It was going to be a festival of fun, music and heritage that would be shared between the two of them. En: But as they arrived at their destination, the atmosphere was not one of joy and celebration. Nb: Det var frykt og spenning. En: It was one of fear and tension. En: The Viking Gilde Festival was being held in a time of great strife, as the powerful jarls of the area had been feuding for years and their arguments had finally reached a boiling point. En: On the first day of the festival, Gert and Liv noticed that the jarls had brought their forces and set up camp near the festival grounds. En: Gert, wanting to show his strength and courage in the face of danger, chose to ignore the jarls and enjoy the festival. Nb: Liv var derimot ikke like sikker. En: Liv, on the other hand, was not so sure. En: She was scared of the jarls and their forces, and the thought of their presence made her uneasy. En: She wanted to turn around and go home, but Gert convinced her to stay and enjoy the festivities, assuring her that everything would be alright. En: For the next few days, Gert and Liv enjoyed the sights and sounds of the festival. En: They danced, shared stories, and feasted on the delicious food and mead offered by the vendors. Nb: De to hadde sitt livs tid. En: The two of them were having the time of their lives. En: On the last day of the festival, however, there was a sudden change in the atmosphere. En: The jarls had been discussing something in secret, and now they were marching towards the festival grounds. En: Gert and Liv knew that they had to do something to protect the festivalgoers. En: Gert immediately sprang into action, using his experience as a warrior to rally the other festivalgoers and prepare them for battle. En: Meanwhile, Liv used her wit and charisma to try and negotiate with the jarls, pleading with them to end their feud peacefully. En: Surprisingly, her words had an effect on the jarls, who finally agreed to a truce and dismantled their forces. En: The festivalgoers cheered and celebrated their victory, and Gert and Liv, who had been so instrumental in the outcome, were praised and honoured by the jarls. En: As the festival ended, Gert and Liv looked forward to their next adventure. En: They had learned a lot about their culture and heritage, but more importantly, they had learned the importance of friendship and working together to achieve a goal. Nb: De hadde vært usannsynlige følgesvenner, men sammen hadde de oppnådd noe stort. En: They had been unlikely companions, but together, they had accomplished something great. Foto: Wahlsten, Ray, Medeltidsmuseet. If you’ve jumped in the middle, here’s Chapter One.After I killed the wolves, Beowulf took a liking to me, as much of a liking as he took to anyone. It became my job to pour Beowulf’s mead. That first night, very drunk, he said to me, “I would make you my squire, were there any more battles to fight.” I remember thinking he was silly for saying this. A foolish old drunk with his glory days behind him. Still, it was with trepidation that I answered, “Does my Lord mean to say that I am no longer a slave?”Beowulf asked me, “Do you have any place else to go?”“No,” I told him.“Nor do I,” he said, lifting his cup. For a while, I thought poison would be the way. But I knew nothing of poisons or herbs. I didn’t even know who to ask. Even young, and foolish as I was, I knew it would not do for the King’s cupbearer to be heard asking questions about poisons.I wonder if Beowulf thought me a coward. It's not a bad guess. Most men are, after all. Or maybe he wanted me to try to kill him. He was old, and tired and perhaps all he wanted was one last fight so he could take his place in that mead hall in the sky. He had outlived all his enemies, and all around him were cowed. The Thanes and Jarls jockeyed for position, politick’d among their meat and mead, and prepared for that day when their ring-giver would give no more. They would fight amongst themselves, as dogs do for scraps, but even though Beowulf was old, they were all afraid to contest with him.I decided I would slit his throat in the middle of the great feast for the visit of Hanclaf, Beowulf’s most powerful Thane. Hanclaf lived three days' ride to the East. He was a Lord of the March, that strip of land that lay between the territory of the Sea-Geats and the unruly tribes beyond. In the absence of Beowulf, Hanclaf would have been a king in own right. But he had seen what had happened to the others, and sworn fealty. Now I can see that was just good sense, but the younger version of myself thought that we would be supping with a coward and his men.My plan, such as I had formulated one, was to wait until late in the night. When Beowulf was well and truly drunk, then I would slit his throat where all could see.But there was no feast. When Hanclaf’s men came, they entered carrying a dying man and presented him as if he was a gift. From underneath the sheepskins came moans and the stench of burned flesh. There were no long speeches. No gifts, no ritual greetings. Hanclaf stopped in the doorway, blocking most of it with his great size and said but one word. “Dragon.”They had greased the burned man with chunks of melted animal fat. I have not seen, before or since, a man so harmed yet still living. When the cover slipped from his legs, I could see that  flesh of them was charcoal. The warmth of the hall melted the fat they had slathered his wounds with and it ran down his legs and dripped thick blackness onto the stone floor. With some tenderness Beowulf went to the man and knelt beside him.In pained whispers the man told his tale to Beowulf. He had been taken as a slave by Hanclaf. Then he escaped and had fled to the coast. There, while searching for a place to hide from pursuers, he had found he an ancient barrow that containing the riches of a people who had been forgotten long ago.But that was not all he found. There also was a burning one, an old harrower of the dark, the worm of fire called by men a Dragon. So the slave had run, taking with him, only a cup of the finest gold.“How do you know this wretch he tells the truth?” one of Beowulf’s worthless, drunken Thanes had demanded.Beowulf stepped to the side, and revealed the burned man’s hand. It too was charred, and melted into the very bones of it was thick layer of gold that had once been a cup.The burned man shivered uncontrollably and Beowulf commanded that he be moved closer to the fire. The slave started screaming before the pallet was even lifted. Beowulf steadied the man with a gentleness that I had never seen in him before.Hanclaf watched all of this moment and then asked, “My King?”Beowulf waved him off and continued whispering to the slave. The sounds of the burned man’s misery grew quieter. And all of us searched each other’s faces, for some sign of what should be done next. Finally, Hanclaf said “When we rode here, three farms had been burned and a small village. The gods alone know how many have been ruined since. I have come for men, men brave enough to face this Dragon. Such men will I lead back in the morning. I will gather the Thanes, and destroy this monster.”It wasn't much of a speech, but the Thanes cheered it anyway. When the cheering died out, then everyone heard the low, phlegmy chuckling, that sounded more volcanic than human. Laughing, Beowulf rose from beside the slave.“What jest is this my King?” Hanclaf asked. But Beowulf's laughter grew and grew. I saw that the slave was dead and that Beowulf held in his hand a freshly-blooded dagger. He asked, “How can you face a Dragon when you don’t even have the stomach to spare a dying man his misery? There is your slave, Hanclaf. There is your cup. Why not take them and go? Better yet, why bring them at all, if you are such a hero? Why not face your dragon alone?”Hanclaf had no reply.Into the silence, Beowulf said, "Not one of you is even fit to be my squire. You have warred with men, but none of you have the strength, the tempered hate in your heart to do what is required." Then he pointed the bloody dagger at me and said, "Except for you.”That was the happiest moment of my life. That was the moment I knew I would have my revenge. Many things happen in the heat of battle which can not be remembered or explained afterwards. This battle with the Dragon would be the perfect concealment for my bloody and most deserved revenge.“Bring your spear,” he told me. As he said it, he smiled.“What about us?” one of the Thanes asked.Beowulf said, “Yes. Bring spears. When you drop them and flee it will give Wiglaf something to pick up.” Get full access to How It's Written by Patrick E. McLean at patrickemclean.substack.com/subscribe

Have you had a gander at the Witcher Netflix series and wondered how it all ties into the game universe? Or maybe you've played through The Witcher series but you're still curious about some of the history and stories the iconic characters are involved in?In this podcast we look at the story right from the beginning, following Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri's journeys all the way up to the end of the Witcher 3, asking what exactly is a Witcher? Why is Ciri so special? and why is Emhyr such a tw*t?(Note: I was suffering with some intense congestion while recording this for some reason, sorry if I sound stuffy!)This is part 1 of 2.CONTINENT MAP: https://i.redd.it/vk0vvfsivw621.pngGlossary of termsDoppler – Shapeshifters of sorts who can mimic man or beast. Naturally rather hideous, but their shapeshifting skills are exceptional. They are naturally gentle and kind.Djinn – being that can grant 3 wishes, much like genies. No take-backsies.Witcher- A person who has trained and developed physically via the use of Mutagens to become an effective monsterslayer for hire. Longer life spans, accelerated healing and disease resistance, but sterile with cat like eyes.Sorceress – Woman educated in magic, doomed to madness unless their latent powers are harnessed and controlled. Study in various schools on the continent and have political influence.Continent – The land in which the events of the series mostly take place. There are other areas beyond the continent mentioned but they aren’t visited.Skellige – Nordic inspired islands set off to the east of the mainland. Ruled by Jarls.Rivia – Small kingdom in the North west mountains.Novigrad – Free city on the North West area of the continent, within Redania but not ruled by it. Major port, very busy and one of the biggest cities on the continent.Temeria – A Kingdom in the North, not particularly strong, ruled by Foltest until his assassination, for which Geralt was wrongly blamed.Redania – Very wealthy Northern Kingdom containing Novigrad. Ruled by King Radovid. Largely at war with Nilfgaard.Radovid – King Radovid rules over Redania, succeeding his father, Vizimir, who was assassinated.
