For the capstone of his Hollywood Stories series exploring the 1990s — an era of explosive creativity and innovation in the entertainment industry — Richard Rushfield talks to two execs who helped New Line Cinema become the movie studio of that golden moment. Mike De Luca is today the co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, but in the '90s he was the head of production at New Line, a powerful role he stepped into at the tender age of 27. Richard Brener started as a temp at New Line in 1995 and never left, working his way up to run the studio (now a division of Warner Bros.) as its president and chief creative officer. Together they recall how the indie house launched by Bob Shaye in 1967 struck gold nearly 30 years later with comedy blockbusters (Austin Powers, Dumb and Dumber, Rush Hour, The Wedding Singer) and revered auteur-driven dramas (American History X, Boogie Nights, Se7en). As an indie, "you were kind of locked into lower-budget acquisitions and films — that all coalesced into a business plan of sleeper hits," De Luca says. “We were not afraid of trying things that we liked, even if other people had passed on them.” Learn more about your ad choices. The Thicket is a gritty Western thriller that follows a young man's quest to rescue his kidnapped sister from the clutches of the notorious Cut Throat Bill (Juliette Lewis). With a ragtag group of outcasts and the aid of the skilled bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage), he embarks on a perilous journey through the unforgiving Texas wilderness. Inspired by classic Westerns like The Searchers, The Revenant, and McCabe & Mrs. Miller, director Elliott Lester sought to create a visually striking and emotionally resonant film. “I look more at photography and art to inform the feeling, because the moment you shoot that very first frame, you're dictating how that movie's going to be,” says Elliott. “Where you put the camera, it informs how the performance is going to feel. There was always something intriguing to look at in each frame of the movie.” The Thicket was backed by the streaming service Tubi and filmed in Alberta, Canada, during the harsh winter months. The cast and crew faced extreme conditions, including temperatures well below freezing. Despite the challenges, Elliott and his team managed to capture the rugged beauty of the wilderness and create a sense of authenticity. Cinematographer Guillermo Garza played a crucial role in bringing Elliott's vision to life. Their collaboration was marked by a deep understanding of naturalism and a commitment to creating visually stunning shots. "One of the reasons I collaborated with him was because he had an amazing understanding of naturalism," Elliott says. "He's a pretty remarkable DP." With no formal film school training, Elliott worked his way up through the ranks of music video production back in its heyday. His experience as a first assistant director on films like American History X provided him with valuable experience and the desire to become a director. "I was obsessive about directing," he admits. "Once I got my teeth into something, I was like a dog with a bone." The gang bites the curb this week as they review the hard-to-watch but meaningful film, American History X. Anyone who has seen this movie can usually pick out 2-3 very hard to watch scenes that are burned into their heads forever. It's not for the faint of heart, but for a purpose. From Inglewood to Ojai who is Vinnie Jae? Standby Painter to the Stars! Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, and Nelson Mandela have all known Vinnie Jae. This week, we watch a film that tackles the subject of nazis in the US. Edward Norton's Academy Award nominated performance leaves us with mixed opinions, as well as the undercooked characters of everyone around him. Still, this film has a few very important points to get across (which feel frighteningly more relevant today than at the films release) and is worth watching for those alone. American History X (1998), directed by Tony Kaye.
Today on Crime & Entertainment we speak with Frank Meeink. The movie American History X is loosely based on Frank's life which he details in this interview. Frank grew up in South Philly and grew up in an Irish/Italian household. Eventually he went to live with his dad in South Philly in an all black neighborhood and got into numerous fights where he was one of the only few white kids. He eventually went and visited his family in rural Lancaster County. He learned Neo Nazi beliefs and ended up become a leader of the national skinhead movement. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a high ranking member of this movement. Eventually this would land him in prison and eventually after his release he would turn away from this life style and become an activist against it. NORTON WEEK continues! This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry. The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home. His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated. The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo. Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Welcome to another episode of the FOLLOWING FILMS podcast. A movie podcast that takes you on a weekly journey into the world of cinema and the minds of the talented individuals who shape it. I'm your host, Chris Maynard, and today we have a very special guest joining us: the immensely talented actor, Ethan Suplee. Renowned for his incredible performances in films like "Remember the Titans" and "American History X," as well as his memorable roles in television series such as "My Name is Earl," Ethan Suplee has become a true force to be reckoned with in the world of acting. Today, I have the honor of diving deep into his latest collaboration with Nick Cassavetes, a powerful and disturbing film titled GOD IS A BULLET. GOD IS A BULLET follows vice detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) as he searches for his kidnapped daughter. Hightower finds his ex-wife murdered by a satanic cult and his daughter kidnapped by those same cultists. Hightower eventually gets fed up with the official investigation and quits the force. In order to track them down, he joins forces with their only female escapee, Case Hardin (Maika Monroe). The two go undercover in a world of violence and high stakes for their own reasons: Hightower needs to find his daughter, and Hardin needs to get closure on her time as the cult's captive. But before we dive into our conversation with Ethan, I'd like to take a moment to thank our sponsor, Bookmans. Bookmans is your go-to independent bookstore, where you can find an extensive selection of books, movies, music, and more. They truly believe in the power of storytelling and the magic of the cinematic arts. So, if you're looking to expand your film collection, be sure to visit your nearest Bookmans. Have you followed the Following Films Podcast on Spotify? If you have, thank you! If you haven't head on over to Spotify, search for Following Films, and give us a follow. It really does help the show. Now, without further ado, here's my conversation with Ethan about GOD IS A BULLET. The film is currently in theaters. . --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support
