On October 2nd, 1999, 3 year-old Jaryd Atadero vanished on a group hike in the Roosevelt National Forest of Colorado, and his father Allyn has been searching for answers to who (or what) what was responsible ever since. The search for Jaryd set off one of the largest search and rescue missions in the state's history and has remained one of Colorado's greatest unsolved mysteries. Jaryd Atadero was three years old when he and his six-year-old sister, Josallyn, went for a hike with a group of adults from their family's resort.Along the way, Jaryd ran up ahead of the group, and a short while later, they realized that he was gone. The search for Jaryd began immediately, but the evidence turned up by the search efforts was anything but comforting.What happened to Jaryd? Was it a mountain lion like some people believe, or was Jaryd abducted and killed by someone in the area?

On October 2, 1999, Allyn Atadero allowed his children to go on a short hike with a group of adults that were volunteering at a cabin resort he owned and managed. Josallyn (6) and Jaryd (3) were excited to enjoy the beautiful day in the forest while Allyn performed his routine chores around the resort. By that afternoon, however, their lives would change forever when Jaryd went missing. The resulting search and rescue mission became one of the largest in Larimer County, Colorado history, and the mystery of what happened to Jaryd remains unsolved to this day.

October 2nd, 1999, 3-year-old Jaryd Atadero, his 6-year-old sister Jocelyn, and 11 other adults were hiking The Big South Trail near Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  While hiking, Jaryd ran ahead, no more than 100 feet and stopped to talk with some fisherman. After his brief time, Jaryd continued down the trail ahead of the group. This would be the last time anyone saw Jaryd.  In the following days, a massive Search and Rescue operation failed to turn up any evidence of Jaryd. 3-year-old Jaryd Atadero disappeared while hiking in the Colorado mountains on October 2nd, 1999. Several years later, Jaryd’s clothes were discovered several hundred feet above the trail that he was on when he vanished. Later a tooth and part of a skull would also be located in the area. On October 2, 1999 three-year-old Jaryd Atadero vanished on a group hike in the Comanche Peak Wilderness in Colorado. As hours turned into days and days turned into months, Jaryd's father Allyn Atadero goes through hell and high water to combat nightmarish circumstances hindering the search, threatening the very core of his existence - circumstances that would bring most ordinary people to the breaking point and beyond. Sound like fiction? It isn't.

Jaryd Atadero. Allyn Atadero shares the painful story of how his 3 year-old son Jaryd went missing in the Colorado mountains. He had gone with his sister and a group of adults to visit a nearby fish hatchery. Without notifying Allyn, the group would later decide to drive to a trail to hike on that was 16 miles away. While on the trail, the adults would lose sight of Jaryd. The search for the boy encountered many obstacles and it would be almost four years before some evidence finally came to light. Many questions remain unanswered in this case. Allyn learned a lot from this experience and has used this knowledge to educate others on trail safety and to assist other parents who face similar challenges.
