My guest for Episode #498 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is Jeffrey K. Liker. Jeff is Professor Emeritus from the University of Michigan, President of Liker Lean Advisors, and author of the great books in the Toyota Way series. Episode page with video, transcript, and more He was previously a guest here in Episodes 3, 4, 37, 39, 41, 111, and 400. Today, we have a discussion centered around learning from mistakes in the context of Toyota and lean methodologies. The episode delves into the significance of recognizing, reacting to, and learning from mistakes within organizations that employ Toyota Production System (TPS) or lean strategies. Jeff shares his insights on how Toyota's culture of continuous improvement and learning from errors fundamentally drives its success. The conversation touches on Toyota's approach to leadership and problem-solving, emphasizing the structured response to mistakes at different levels of the organization, from the factory floor to top management. The episode further explores the Toyota leadership model, illustrating how leaders at various levels are expected to react when mistakes occur. Liker explains the role of the andon cord system in facilitating immediate problem identification and resolution, showcasing Toyota's commitment to quality and efficiency. He elaborates on the multi-layered leadership response to errors, detailing the responsibilities of team leaders, group leaders, and higher management in fostering a culture of learning and improvement. The discussion underscores the importance of a systemic approach to problem-solving, where the focus is on understanding and addressing the root causes of mistakes rather than attributing blame to individuals. This episode offers valuable insights into the principles of lean leadership and the critical role of acknowledging and learning from mistakes in achieving organizational excellence and innovation. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How you'd expect Toyota leaders to react to a mistake on the factory floor? Less likely to blame an individual? Root cause vs. controllable cause? That can be a tough lesson to teach other companies? Hardest habit to break is the blame habit? Mistakes people make in trying to help change behavior What's necessary, in another company's workplace culture, for people to feel safe pulling the andon cord or speaking up? Article about the Ford plant and andon cords in 2007 Jeff insights on that Dearborn plant The mention of psychological safety in “Toyota Culture”? What do you think of the phrase “psychological safety”? Or just the concept of it? Lean-asiantuntija Juha Ketola haastoi seuraajansa tykkäämään some-jaostaan lupauksella, että tekee yhtä monta #suomileaniksi -meemiä kuin saa tykkäyksiä ennen päivän päättymistä. Hän on nyt noin puolivälissä 185 meemin urakkaansa. Lean-filosofia on japanilaisten autotehtaiden, erityisesti Toyotan tuotantokäytäntöjen kautta luotu yritystoiminnan malli, jossa erityisesti oppiva henkilökunta ja standardoitu prosessi vähentävät huonoa vaihtelua eli hukkaa. Parhaimmillaan tämän filosofian toteutus johtaa yhden kappaleen virtauksella toimivaan erittäin kilpailukykyiseen liiketoimintaan. Jaksossa käydään läpi Juhan luomia meemejä ja pohditaan niiden takana olevia viisauksia. Alan klassikkoajattelijoita ovat James P. Wemack tiimeineen, Jeffrey K. Liker sekä Dr. W. Edwards Deming. 00:00-42:25 Juha Ketola ja Sami Miettinen keskustelevat #suomileaniksi meemihaasteesta noin kymmenen #lean -aiheisen meemin kautta #suomeleaniksi #yritykset #huumori #yhteiskunta #sijoittajat #lean #agile

Filipe Tiago Stankovic is a young and very motivated CEO who has been working in this position for the past 3 years. He originally started by getting his hands dirty and being involved in every possible step imaginable of the company. Now he is a bit more focused on (just) management. He loves learning and has been truly blessed by the opportunity – and the burden, of being in charge and being able to actually try his new ideas from all the books he reads. This is an opportunity that not many young people get.In this episode we explore many different topics in the form of a jamming session: anything from his favorite food, books – and how he applies knowledge acquired through reading in his everyday business, why he prefers non-fiction, although his father, Dejan Tiago Stankovic, is an acclaimed novelist, music (Filipe does rap music), dancing, all the way to his everyday business responsibilities and, ultimately, how having too many irons in the fire may lead to burnout, what the main culprits of it may be, and how to tackle it. We touch upon the topic of psychology, the perceptions of persons being either extroverts or introverts – or, as Filipe explains, outgoing introverts vs. shy extroverts as well. Finally, we cover the topic of learning, personally and as an organization.Things we mentioned:LinguaeMundi: https://www.linguaemundi.pt/Francesinha: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FrancesinhaTranslation Centre for the Bodies of the EU: http://cdt.europa.eu/enmemoQ talks episode with Ildikó Horváth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSOlKQbECgM The Socratic Method: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_methodmemoQfest: https://www.memoqfest.com/ Books:The Toyota Way, by Jeffrey K. Today I am talking about developing your workforce by using the Toyota Talent Principles. Why is this important to you? Well, as a manufacturing leader and business owner, regardless of your daily responsibilities, you still have the job of onboarding new talent. Onboarding requires you to spend a lot of time training people on how to do the work you need to be done each and every day. Toyota has a proven system to develop talent. This episode shares several of the Toyota Principles as detailed in the book, Toyota Talent by Jeffrey K. Liker and David P. Meier. Their book, and the several that followed, details Toyota’s systems, how these are applied, and how people, like you and me, can duplicate or, at least, emulate these efforts in the workplace. We’ll dive deeper into these concepts: An overview of the Toyota Job Instruction Four-Step Method. Your State Manufacturing Extension Partners (MEPs) are a contact point for training within the industry programs. Hire for attitude and then train for skill. Consider bringing on temporary trainers such as retirees from within the industry to help with training your new employees. The skills of the effective trainer. Now for some action steps: Start this week by developing your first steps in an action and learning plan for onboarding new employees. Pick an important job that's often done by new employees. List the skills required. Think about the steps for explaining and teaching how to do these skills. Resources and links mentioned: Toyota Talent: Developing Your People the Toyota Way by Jeffrey K.
