Today, we're listening to a replay of one of our favorite episodes with John Tarnoff. Tune in to listen here → http://www.lynnfriesth.com/podcast1/224 As Boomers, we have to constantly reinvent ourselves, just like companies do. And one of the most effective ways to do that is to pull together different pieces of ourselves to create something new. Reinvention doesn't come from nothing. It comes from seeing ourselves in a new light. John Tarnoff had a long career in the entertainment business. After his tech startup went bust, he decided to go back to school to earn a Master's degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, his mission is to support professionals over 50 – to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. John wrote a book on this called Boomer Reinvention, How To Create Your Dream Career Over 50. We've all attended a presentation only to leave and immediately forget everything we'd learned. Why does this happen? Likely, the presenter wasn't interactive, didn't make the presentation fun for everyone, and didn't tell stories. These common mistakes make the audience bored and unlikely to retain any information. Go here to listen → http://www.lynnfriesth.com/podcast1/221 On the other hand, when presenters connect to the right energy, connect with their audiences, and perform their presentations, the impact is amazing. Both the presenter and the audience members enjoy themselves and are left with a powerful takeaway. In this episode, I am talking with Rick Davis of the Davis Presentation Group about more strategies for giving effective presentations. Rick can help you find ways to CONNECT to positive sources, PLAY with ideas and interests that energize you and make you come alive, and PERFORM in the role you were always meant to portray. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: The lessons Rick learned as he built his business and began helping people with presentations. First steps to becoming a better presenter. The typical mistakes presenters make. How many points a presentation should have. How to utilize stories well in presentations. Taking the time to rehearse and develop our presentations. The impact of being more intentional about our presentations. General presentation formats you can use. The benefit of pauses while presenting. Willpower alone will never lead to success. It certainly won't help you create a successful Encore Career. You need more than willpower–you need habits. Go here to listen → http://www.lynnfriesth.com/podcast1/220 Today, I want to talk all about healthy habits and how to implement them. To help me do so, I'm going back over some ideas from the study, “Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement” by Edward Jones and AgeWave. They talk about the stages of retirement and the disorientation that comes with it. When we retire, we disrupt the habits of work we've had for 30-40 years. All of a sudden, we're launched into a new environment. Additionally, in corporate life, you had a level of drive. You pushed through things and made it work. In your Encore Career, however, you only have so much drive. All of this explains why we have to depend on routines, checklists, and habits to help support us as we create our new Encore Career. Tune in to learn how! We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How to create a new habit. How to identify the distractions that are getting in your way. Why tracking your habits is important. Why you need to stop being so hard on yourself. Four especially useful habits. The power of simplification. Application questions to ask yourself. Prepare to have your perceptions of aging, work, and retirement shifted as we explore the profound potential of a 100-year life, inspired by the enlightening Stanford Study on Longevity. We dismantle the outdated notion of aging as a hard stop at 65 and delve into the need for a stage-based understanding of life – one where continual learning and multiple job transitions become the norm. The New Map of Life project paints a hopeful picture of longevity. It suggests that lengthened lives can lead to transformative societal changes enabling us to redefine life itself – leading to more productive, meaningful, and healthier living at various life stages, not just in the golden years. With age as a significant part of the diversity equation, this conversation emphasizes the critical role of inclusivity in the scope of a 100-year life. We take a hard look at the retirement system and the potential to create return ships for those who've stepped away from the workforce. We also discuss how healthcare redesign can shift from treatment to prevention, building a healthier and more fulfilling life for all. We're confident that you'll walk away with a fresh perspective on the potential of a longer, healthier life and the opportunities it presents for personal growth and societal progress. Today's adults are living longer, healthier lives. In years past, when someone retired, they could expect to live another ten or 15 years, leaving plenty of time just to enjoy the fruits of a lifetime of hard work. But retirement can become less appealing when you're facing 20 or 30 years of nothing but leisure--and perhaps some boredom.
