The Atlanta Braves are still struggling at the plate, so much that when they do have a starting pitcher scuffle, you can pretty much chalk up a loss. In fact, the Braves are zero in they're last twenty-six games where they have given up four or more runs. That's not so great for the team that set the single-season record for home runs just last season. But, that is baseball, and the offense has shown some sparks lately, we just have to hope that they get hot at the right moment: the playoffs. One area that the Braves are doing great in is pitching, and there is likely more help on the way with the returns of A.J. Smith-Shawver and Ian Anderson. Max Fried is pitching his way in to a VERY lucrative contract, albeit probably won't be with the Braves. Chris Sale has been a revelation, who would've taken the National League lead in wins had the offense gotten a paltry two runs. Reynaldo Lopez, although struggling a little in his last start, may be the free agent acquisition of the year. But the unsung heroes have been the pitchers in the bullpen. The Braves currently have five relievers with an ERA under three, and the leader of that squad is veteran Jesse Chavez. Forty year-old Jesse Chavez has pitched in twenty-seven games this season, with an ERA of 1.51 with thirty strikeouts through thirty-five innings pitched. Chavez was on a similar track last year before he was struck in the leg by a comebacker that landed him on the IL for majority of the season. With public All-Star voting coming to a close, it is about time for the players and coaches to exercise their right to vote, and there is no other candidate that deserves it more than Braves' fan favorite veteran Jesse Chavez, AKA "The Coach". Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk to Braves insider Grant McCauley about Chavez, players due back from injury, and what the Braves may or may not do at the trade deadline.
With the All-Star break fast approaching, the Atlanta Braves are in the midst an important home stand that will include a showdown with the first place Philadelphia Phillies. Grant McAuley delves into the recent news and trends for the club, which includes a few more questions than answers about the lineup. While Jarred Kelenic and Austin Riley have been among the bright spots, Adam Duvall and Orlando Arcia are fighting extended slumps. How might that impact Alex Anthopoulos' shopping list for the trade deadline? You'll also hear a great conversation with veteran right-hander Charlie Morton. The 40-year-old starter shares his thoughts on Jesse Chavez's success, how it relates to the current game, how club's evaluate pitchers, and what helped Morton unlock his potential in the second half his career. Mark Bowman of MLB.com sits down to discuss his new book - "The Franchise: Atlanta Braves, A Curated History of the Atlanta Braves." He shares the process of writing book, selecting the stories, interviewing the various Braves players and executives, and reflects on the impact of Ted Turner's vision and TBS in not only making the Braves a household name, but changing the way MLB is consumed on television. All of that and a trip around the big leagues to talk about some of the biggest stories in MLB on this episode of the show! From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. The Braves won the opener on Thursday, but ended their weekend in D.C. with three straight losses. David & Eric begin with a surprising milestone as Jesse Chavez recorded the 1000th strikeout of his career on Sunday. Chavez made his MLB debut all the way back on August 27, 2008 . (12:00) The offense struggled over the weekend and only scored a combined four runs on Friday and Saturday. Austin Riley is emblematic of this as he his hitting .230 this season and his OPS is at .648. (21:10) A look at who might represent the Braves at next month's All Star Game in Texas. They definitely will not match last years total of eight representatives at the Midsummer Classic. (29:00) Analysis of Hurston Waldrep's MLB debut on Sunday. Eric explains why he hopes that Waldrep is given at least one more start in the majors before being sent back down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The month of May has once again been a bit unkind to the Atlanta Braves, who seem like they are winning games in spite of their offense at the moment. Of course, the pitching staff has been pitching in more than its fair share to make it happen. Grant McAuley discussed the latest Braves news from the week that was, including some encouraging signs for Matt Olson at the plate, but a discouraging injury update for Austin Riley that seems to have the third baseman in limbo as far as a return. You'll hear Riley's comments from Saturday as he described the ailment that has him stuck on the bench for the time being. Meanwhile, Travis d'Arnaud also had a brush with injury but appears to have emerged unscathed while Sean Murphy's return to could be getting closer with an upcoming rehab assignment. Ronald Acuña Jr. is among those still searching for consistency and results, so did a day off help speed that process up? You'll also hear from Atlanta reliever Jesse Chavez, who shares some insight on the inner workings of the bullpen. And we'll discuss the latest Players Only telecast on Bally Sports South with Brian McCann and Jeff Francoeur, who reflect on their friendship and the chance to reunite on the 20th anniversary of their rookie season. Special guest Russell Dorsey of Yahoo Sports joins the show to discuss the state of the Toronto Blue Jays, a club that once seemed destined to become a powerhouse, but is now staring at the possibility that their homegrown stars are not only under-performing but could also bolt in free agency. David Adler of MLB.com checks in to share the inner workings of Statcast's new bat-tracking metrics, from concept to the first iteration which debuted this past week. This latest evolution allows us to take a deeper look at how the swing works and who has the most explosive swing in MLB. The Atlanta Braves had an eventful week, welcoming back star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and reuniting with a familiar face. Grant McAuley covers the events of Opening Weekend as the Braves offense come to life and help secure the series, which could be an indication of more to come from the deepest lineup in MLB. Also discussed, the injury status of Sean Murphy, the important work by the bullpen -- including the ageless Jesse Chavez coming to the rescue in Game 2, some ups and downs for Atlanta's top three starting pitchers, why Michael Harris II is primed for greatness, and some encouraging contributions from Jarred Kelenic and Adam Duvall. Maria Martin of 11 Alive in Atlanta stops by to discuss the state of the Braves and their championship goals, reflect on the magic that was October of 2021 and why Ronald Acuña Jr.'s article for The Players Tribune is just another way he's demonstrating his star power. For our trip around the big leagues, we'll delve into a rather heated debate on sliding etiquette between the Brewers and Mets, some offensive history for the Diamondbacks, Scott Boras' thoughts on why his big free agents had trouble finding the right deals, and a visit with Mike Ferrin of MLB Network Radio. From The Diamond will air live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. In hour 2 Beau, Mike, and Sandra get in to some more draft talk, ATLUTD being undefeated at home, and who was the real hero in Philadelphia this weekend?
The Braves opened the season by taking two out of three games in Philadelphia. David (Live from his hotel in Chicago) & Eric begin by discussing the crummy weather that is expected for the upcoming three game series at the White Sox. (02:30) Sunday was a 5-4 defeat, but Chris Sale showed a lot to be happy about in his initial outing (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 Ks). Hear reaction to how Sale already lived up to the reputation of his fiery demeanor. (12:15) Atlanta's offense had a might start to the year by scoring 21 combined runs in the pair of victories. Michael Harris II came through with a trio of hits on both Friday and Saturday, including a homer. Jarred Kelenic also impressed in his first games as a Brave as he collected four hits in Philadelphia. (18:35) Jesse Chavez earned the victory on Saturday after Max Fried was pulled in the 1st inning. Chavez was cut by the White Sox during Spring Training and is now in his fourth stint with the Braves. (21:40) Strider vs. Wheeler was on Friday and each came away with a no decision. Strider struck out eight Phillies in only 5 IP. (27:30) Chadwick Tromp (catcher) was called up from Gwinett over the weekend after Sean Murphy landed on the 10-day IL due to a strained left oblique muscle. (32:00) Philadelphia's loud crowd went from booing the Braves to jeering their own team after falling behind early Friday and Saturday. Orlando Arcia had a happy returned to Citizens Bank Park as he totaled with three hits in both victories. They wonder if the projections are sleeping on the Philadelphia Phillies and also take a look at the rest of the NL East. Pitchers and catchers will be reporting to North Port next week and Grant will be in Florida for all of the early action. The Braves don't have a lot of roster question marks, but we will be keeping an eye on the competition for the fifth starter spot and the final bench spots. Finally, Jesse Chavez has a new home after agreeing to a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox.
