“How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God” is one of those lines from Jesus that nobody can soften without losing the point. We start in Luke 18 with the camel and the needle, the rich ruler who can't let go, and the question hanging in the air: if wealth and self-control can't save you, who can? Jesus answers with the only hope that holds up under pressure: what is impossible with people is possible with God.From there, we keep reading straight through Luke 18, including Jesus warning the disciples about what awaits him in Jerusalem and the moment near Jericho where a blind beggar refuses to be silenced. That man's stubborn cry for mercy is a picture of faith that's simple, loud, and honest. We also pray through Psalm 86 and touch Proverbs 13 on pride and wise counsel, tying Bible study to daily character, leadership, and humility. We don't stay in the abstract. I read a marriage verse from Colossians and say the quiet part out loud: you can't demand “husbands love” while rejecting “wives submit,” and you can't claim God's design while only defending the half you like. We also move into real-world headlines, a Medal of Honor story, and an argument about America's Christian foundations and the need for public repentance and prayer. If you're looking for a Christian podcast that mixes Scripture reading, prayer, marriage talk, and cultural commentary, press play and sit with it. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast community builidng is a central theme. For twenty years, my guest, Bakajika Tshinanga, has operated at the exact intersection where culture generates economic value. His journey started in 2004, when he founded a student-led program at the University of Georgia Atlanta. Georgia Daze still runs today and has improved enrollment yield conservatively valued at $150M+ in incremental revenue for the university. That experience shaped how he thinks about infrastructure: who builds it, who benefits, and who owns the upside. He went on building hospitality programming delivering the cultural insight that prompted AT&T to sponsor Drake's inaugural headline tour and leading the campaign that introduced the Lyft ridesahre app to Atlanta. He's produced work with cultural figures including Michael Jordan, and while an undergraduate he producing concerts featuring Outkast, Lauryn Hill, and Dave Chappelle. Also of note, he owns a publishing catalog featuring songs from Lil Wayne, The Neptunes, Sevyn Streeter, Pusha T, and Usher. Coding since age 11, technology is lens he's always looking through. His latest endeavor, the lOlŌ's platform is the direct expression of technology deployed as infrastructure to close the gap between who creates cultural value and who captures it. He's lived the innovator's dilemma firsthand: operating at the riskiest part of the curve, where the work is undeniable but the capital isn't designed to find you. That experience is why lOlŌ exists—a collective ownership vehicle for cultural capital, community-capitalized, community-governed, designed to compound for generations. Where to fine Bakajika? We throw the notes out the window and just hit record the second Rhonda walks in the door — because we were in two different states all weekend and somehow didn't actually talk about any of it until now. Rhonda breaks down her girls' trip to Athens, Georgia for a Bailey Zimmerman concert, complete with rainy plans, Parents' Weekend crowds, questionable hotel choices, and an Uber ride that felt like the opening scene of a horror movie (but, spoiler, everyone survives). Meanwhile, Jeremy's weekend turns into a full-on Disney-to-DC sprint: Hollywood Studios and EPCOT festival bites, a detour to Disney Springs with friends, a peek at a two-person DVC tower studio at Riviera with a killer Spaceship Earth view, and a stop at Cake Bake Shop that ends with banana pudding magic. And then… it's off property chaos time. Think: smoky lobby, system outage, no key card, a toilet that won't flush, and a very real “time is money” reminder that ties right back into our on-property vs off-property debate from last episode. Dr. Dahl presented a Real Science webinar on heat stress on April 1, 2025. You can find the webinar at balchem.com/realscience. This episode of Real Science Exchange further explores the key elements of Dr. Dahl's webinar.Dr. Dahl talks about geographical differences in whether farms provide cooling for dry or lactating cows. Cows get heat stressed long before humans. Some farms are concerned that using misters for cooling will add too much water to their manure handling systems. He notes a study comparing conventional misters and fans, no cooling, and smart soakers that only provide mist if a cow is present. When the total amount of water (drinking + cooling system) was evaluated, the smart soakers cooled as well as the conventional system, but used the same amount of water as the no cooling group.  (7:08)During the dry period, a main impact of heat stress is a reduction in dry matter intake. However, there are dramatic shifts in immune function and effects on mammary development and redevelopment in cows who experience heat stress in the dry period. This sets the stage for lower productivity in the next lactation. In addition, there are many negative impacts on the in utero calf from heat stress. Calves from heat stressed dams are challenged from a growth standpoint, in addition to organ development challenges in the mammary gland, ovaries, and immune system. These calves are less likely to make it through their first lactation, are less productive, and pass their poor production and survival phenotype on to their offspring. (14:28)Dr. Tao talks about when during the dry period to provide cooling for cows. Spoiler alert: the entire dry period! He also notes that bred heifers should have cooling provided for the last 60 days of gestation as well. Laura asks about the impact of heat stress on neonatal calves and how it may impact their mammary development. More research is needed in this area, and you also have to wait two years to collect data from the first lactation. Dr. Dahl notes that observations from season of birth data indicate lower longevity for calves who are born to heat stressed dams. (18:26)Milk production is decreased by 8-10 pounds per day for cows stressed during the dry period, and they also produce a lower volume of colostrum. Calves from heat stressed dams also have a lower rate of passive transfer of antibodies from colostrum. The panel talks about why that might be, whether or not those gut differences persist after calfhood, and how that might be related to growth differences between heat stressed and cooled calves. (27:30)What about reproduction? It appears that heat stress during the dry period has a negative impact on reproductive function in the subsequent breeding season. Recent research has indicated that calves experiencing heat stress in utero have poor gonadal development and lower follicular reserves. In addition, placental development is also negatively affected. Dr. Tao notes that heat stress negatively impacts mammary gland involution during the dry off period. All of this leads to a decrease in cow longevity. (35:36)Dr. Dahl describes a retrospective records study using Florida and California herds to evaluate cows in their fifth through eighth lactations. In Florida, about three-quarters of those animals were born in cooler parts of the year rather than in hotter months of the year. The pattern in California was similar, though not quite as extreme. (44:02)Dr. Tao and Dr. Dahl expand on the economics of cooling cows, including return on investment and the costs of not cooling. The guests also talk about some of their research abstracts at the 2025 ADSA meetings. (48:10)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. After two eventful years at the University of Georgia, former Catoctin High sprinting star Brody Buffington is this week's guest on The FInal Score podcast. Buffington is coming off his best season at Georgia, during which he set personal-best times in the 100 (10.05 seconds) and 200 (20.2) meter dashes and qualified for NCAA nationals in the 200 in Eugune, Oregon. He chats with host Greg Swatek and about why he ran so well for the Bulldogs this spring and the ordeals he's been through at Georgia in getting to this point. Buffington talks about the hamstring, abdominal and hip injuries that hampered his first year with the team and completely wiped out his outdoor season last spring. What was the recovery process like? And he talks about a bizarre incident at a crosswalk with a police officer last September that led to him spending 10 hours in a holding cell before all charges were promptly tossed out in court. What sort of impact did that incident have on him? Buffington also talks about his future with the Georgia program. What are his goals? How much faster can he get? Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss the news of the day with Frederick County sports, including a pair of Division I college signings and the Frederick Flying Cows surprising dismissal of coach Ed Corporal after two very successful seasons in The Basketball League.

The Proof Is in the Dough: Rural Southern Women, Extension, and Making Money (University of Georgia Press, 2025) examines how rural white and African American women in Alabama and Florida used the Cooperative Extension Service's home demonstration programming between 1914 and 1929 as a means to earn extra income. Kathryn L. Beasley explores an area of rural women's history that has not been closely examined--that is, how rural American women involved with home demonstration used the skills they learned as a way to better themselves economically. Furthermore, Beasley traces how this extra income allowed these women to shape their own producing and consuming habits. While most home demonstration programming during the Progressive Era and 1920s focused on ways to save money--among other objectives--rural women in Alabama and Florida used different strategies to earn more money and gain some economic independence. Beasley's research shows how Alabama and Florida's rural women exercised their own determination and resourcefulness to create ways to economically sustain themselves by using food, tangible items, handicrafts, small businesses, and more to their advantage. However, while there were similarities in how these rural women earned extra money, the states in which they lived differed in important agricultural ways. Florida offered a wider variety of growing and environmental seasons and, as a result, a larger diversity of crops. By taking a comparative approach--both Florida versus Alabama and Black versus white--Beasley details the unique and innovative ways that rural southern women applied their considerable agricultural and domestic skills to improve their lives and the lives of their families. In so doing, she also reveals how disposable income helped establish ideas of empowerment and financial independence in the years before the economic struggles of the 1930s. Brennan is a current 3L at the University of Georgia Law School. Brennan's journey is just getting underway but is full of amazing insights about the Law School experience, while still fresh in the mind. Brennan and I started before Law School, during his time at UPenn. He would explore many different routes before deciding on Law, but his inspiration for Law School came before arriving at UPenn. His late father was a prosecutor and family law attorney, so Brennan was surrounded by the law at a young age. He always questioned the law and was interested in the wall between those in the legal world and everyday people. We then moved to Brennan's first year of Law School, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and understood as well, that he was not going to enjoy and love every second of it. Brennan loved the structure it brought to his life, and accepted and was ok with doing it for hours on end every week, always having goals in mind. Brennan then spoke about his work experiences throughout Law School, focusing on a topic we talk about with every Law Student and Lawyer who comes on the podcast, finding out what they want to do with the law, which is important, but especially finding out what he did not want to do with the law, in terms of specialization. Finally, Brennan and I would look towards the future, where, after being a summer associate at Kirkland & Ellis this past summer, Brennan will be returning there post-graduation, so a huge congratulations to him!
