This week Brookfield Central HC Joel Nellis joins the Fall Guys. Coach Nellis talks about playing HS ball in Madison and his decision to walk on to Wisconsin to play football for the Badgers. That decision eventually led to him writing a book about the success of walk-ons at UW and their success called "Walk On This Way". We also get to hear some of the lessons coach has learned along the way and who taught them to him.
From the Archives: Today’s Coach and Coordinator podcast begins a new series called “Home Team.” This series features guest host Joel Nellis, head coach at Brookfield Central High School (Wisconsin). He was on the Coach and Coordinator podcast as a guest July 2. Jim Leonhard is in his third season on the coaching staff at Wisconsin. He started by coaching the defensive backs his first season, then moved to defensive coordinator in his second season on the staff. As a defensive coordinator in 2017, Leonhard was a finalist for the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant. Before coaching, Leonhard spent 10 seasons in the NFL as a player with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. Prior to playing professionally, Leonhard was an all-American defensive back at Wisconsin. On today’s “Home Team” segment of the Coach and Coordinator podcast, guest host Joel Nellis talks with legendary high school head coach Jerry Sinz. Coach Sinz is one of the most decorated high school football coaches in the state of Wisconsin and has been at the helm of Edgar since 1975. Since then, coach has amassed a record of 419-83. Edgar has won 25 conference titles, had 17 undefeated regular seasons, and captured seven state titles in 12 trips during Coach Sinz’s tenure. In 2009, Edgar was the No. 1 ranked small school in the country, and in 2010, Coach was recognized as the National High School Coach Association Football Coach of the Year. Sinz had the pleasure of coaching all four of his sons – Jason, Jeremy, Jordan and Justin – at Edgar. Sinz has been married to his wife, Barb, for 47 years. They are proud grandparents to nine grandchildren. Garrett Campbell is the guest on the Home Team Series with host Joel Nellis. Embarking on his 3rd season with the Hornets, Coach Campbell is no stranger to Fullerton College as his father, Dick Campbell, was on the Hornet coaching staff for 15 seasons during the Hal Sherbeck years. As a young boy, Garrett served as Fullerton's ball boy and then later grew to become a quarterback and wide receiver for the Hornets from 1995-96. Born and raised in southern California Campbell, earned his bachelor's degree at nearby California State Fullerton in 1998. He then went on to earn his master's degree at Northern State University in 2002. Campbell got his start in coaching at Fullerton College in 1998 and has since coached at Northern State, Willamette University, Menlo College and Carthage College and Illinois College. Prior to joining the Hornet coaching staff, Campbell was the head coach of the Illinois College football team for eight seasons.
