Indiana's dreams of a 6-6 season and a bowl bid ended very prematurely on Saturday, as they lost a shootout to Illinois 48-45 in overtime. For once, Indiana's offense showed up ready to party --- but Indiana's defense struggled throughout. We discuss the disappointing aspects of the loss, and contemplate another season without a postseason.
Brion looks at this week's opponent Illinois and the games played from 1899 through 1936. There have been 78 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 37-39-2 all-time (49%). Two more wins by Iowa will tie the series. This matchup has been fairly competitive throughout the years. Illinois won 12 straight games from 1942 thru 1967, but it included a gap between 1952 to 1967 when they didn't play. From 1990-92, Iowa won 3 straight, then from 1993-95, Illinois won 3 straight, then Iowa won 3 straight from 1996-1998. Hayden Fry was 10-8 (56%), including the final 3 matchups (1996-1998). Kirk Ferentz is 13-4 (76%), winning 8 straight until last year's 6-9 loss in 2022. A few interesting stories to listen for. An Iowa coach killed a rabbit to try and end a curse, Iowa fans came to Iowa Field to hear a telegram update on a big road game at Champaign, one game was so popular that ticket prices jumped from $3 to $10, and there were some really bad lopsided games early in the series by both teams. Player profiles this week are Nick Bell, former NFL running back, who was a key part of the 1990 Rose Bowl, and had a monster game against Illinois in 1990, and Bret Bielema, former Iowa walk-on and team captain during that same time, who is now the head coach at Illinois. Remember the killer Bs? Bagwell and Biggio of the Houston Astros? Bret Biliema takes that to another level. The head football coach at the University of Illinois has two brothers whose first names start with B. Same with his sisters and two daughters. But first names, he claims, matters if you build value to it.And clearly, Bielema has built plenty of value. Now in his third season at Champaign, Bielema wants to build off an 8 and 4 season. His track record indicates he likely will. “What we have to do is strive to get ourselves better. My first year when we went 5 and 7 I said I didn't come here to go 5 and 7 and to be quite honest I didn't come here to go 8 and 5 (they lost the bowl game). But a big step in our program is not necessarily what it takes to win, it's just the desire to not have failure," Bielema tells the show. This is a man who took over Barry Alvarez's program at Wisconsin and became the first coach in school to win at least 8 games in his first season. After 7 years of success in Madison Bielema left for Arkansas and managed three bowl trips in 5 seasons. He then spent two seasons as an assistant with the New England Patriots whose head coach happened to be Bill Belichick. Here we go with the Bs again.Bielema carefully sidestepped the scandal at Northwestern offering to make sure he always on top of everything that touches his players lives. This energetic and popular coach says he doesn't want to leave Illinois and with good reason: he paid some six million annually.
