John's mission is clear: to empower leaders and teams to communicate in a way that's not just effective, but also unforgettable. How? Through the power of authentic storytelling. In today's digital age, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, connection is the ultimate goal. Whether you're seeking a potential employer, a new customer, a strategic partner, or simply someone who can elevate your professional journey, the key lies in forming genuine connections. John delves deep into how he aids his clients and students in achieving this connection swiftly and genuinely through storytelling. He conducts workshops and one-on-one sessions to help clients craft their brand's "founder's" story, ensuring a deeper connection with their audience. This narrative can be showcased on websites, social media, presentations, public speaking events, or networking sessions. Content Storytelling: John coaches individuals to pen content that truly resonates with their target audience. He guides them in framing their content around pivotal pillars and harnessing the art of storytelling to foster a genuine connection with their tribe. Video Training: In the visual age, video is a powerful tool. John assists clients in connecting with their ideal audience through video storytelling. From crafting the perfect narrative to delivering it professionally and filming it with just a mobile phone, John covers it all. Storytelling Workshops for Teams: For leaders managing teams, the objective is twofold: enhancing productivity (connection) and ensuring customers truly understand the brand (clarification). Francis Bacon was an artist whose radical generosity teetered on the edge of self-obliteration –– and he sometimes pulled others over the edge with him. Many of our listeners will be familiar with Bacon's work, or at least would recognise his idiosyncratic style if they saw it; sweeps of fleshy paint across black fields of colour, portraying contorted, mangled bodies, racks of hanging meat, and the iconic screaming mouth. But Bacon is almost as famous for the way he lived his life: his raucous partying, brutal barbed tongue, and love of boozing made him an emblem of London's bohemian Soho scene. What linked his work and his life was an obsession with violence, something that he knew intimately. ----more---- Daniel Farson, The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon (New York: Pantheon Books, 1993) John Maybury et al., Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon, Biography, Drama, Romance (BBC Films, British Film Institute (BFI), Arts Council of England, 1998) Michael Peppiatt, Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma (Abingdon-on-Thames: Routledge, 2019) Richard Curson Smith et al., Francis Bacon: A Brush with Violence, Documentary, Biography (IWC Media, 2017) David Sylvester, Interviews with Francis Bacon, Third edition (New York, NY: Thames & Hudson, 2016). John Maybury is a presentation coach specialising in video content. He helps elevate your online presence through coaching, podcast training and filming workshops - making your videos memorable and effective while remaining authentically you. In this digital era, more business owners are interested in online content - but what should you actually talk about? In this episode, John discusses how to build trust and communicate your value, no matter what business you're in. He shares how he hasn't always been comfortable speaking in front of an audience or a camera lens. Through practise and his love for drama, he overcame his stutter and achieved his childhood dream of being on the radio, making history with his father on New Zealand's first father-son commercial radio show. John's passion is to get the best out of people; increasing their confidence and providing simple tips so they can go from good to great. He loves seeing that aha moment when his clients feel confident in themselves and the future of their business. Discover how John's experiences and presentation tips can help you and your business. John's Top 3 Tips 1. Start. I hear everybody say, 'I think I'll be ready next month.' We all procrastinate. Get out your mobile phone, record a video of yourself and post it on LinkedIn. Just do it. 2. People buy us first. So if you're doing business videos, you can still share personal information about yourselves. I think the natural default for people is they want to educate and show the value. That's true, we need to do that. But my favourite video was 'Tell me three things about you that your audience doesn't know.' It's just sheer personal stuff. It's about being relatable and having a deeper connection with fellow human beings, not just selling stuff. 3. Less is more. My biggest lesson from my radio days and I apply it to video. Most people when they go out to do a video, there's so many things to get ready. You've got to have the lighting and the camera and the mics, you've got the hair and makeup and then you've got to set up all the equipment. So they want to get their values worth. They mention 10 things rather than one and then the video doesn't work. You need to talk about one thing and finish. Then do another nine videos on the other nine things. Adam Buxton uncovers the influence of British music videos in the early years of MTV, 40 years after the network first launched. Going live on 1st August 1981, MTV made British new wave artists hugely popular in the USA - for example Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club and Adam Ant got extraordinary exposure - but it was also a golden age for music video production. Before the formula set in, and videos became extremely expensive, unit-shifting devices, directors were often given free reign to take risks and experiment. Adam speaks to pioneering music video directors who were breaking new ground in techniques and imagery. Many came from art schools, were part of the underground music scene, or were starting out in the film industry - borrowing kit after work to film gigs. Gale Sparrow was one of MTV's first hires, and in charge of sourcing music videos for MTV's launch. She turned to small British labels because they had them in ready supply. What she discovered was very different from the few American videos available - which was mostly concert footage of gnarly old rockers. Will Fowler is curator of artists' moving image at the BFI National Archive and an expert on the burgeoning underground film scene of the late 70s and 80s. He researched and created the touring exhibition This is Now, Film and Video After Punk, which involved tracking down and restoring films which had never been archived. There was an explosion of artists experimenting in film and video. Some - Sophie Muller, John Maybury, John Scarlett-Davis for example - would go on to have very successful careers as music video directors. He explains how the influence of Jean Cocteau and William Burroughs made their way onto MTV. Produced by Victoria Ferran and Chris O'Shaughnessy. A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4

Ordered to a mental hospital, Jack is subjected to Dr. Thomas Becker's (Kris Kristofferson) unusual treatment plan, which involves mysterious injections, sensory deprivation and confinement in a straitjacket. Locked away on his own, Jack discovers he can travel to the future, where he's compelled to help a onetime acquaintance (Keira Knightley) and investigate his own odd fate. Hello everyone! This evening, Elise Moore and David Fiore accompany a pair of distraught time troopers through the Foucauldian looking glass, wondering the whole time whether any of this stuff is really happening. Our first film is Terry Gilliam's justly-celebrated 12 Monkeys (1995), starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt. Yes, it's based on Chris Marker's La jetée, but we'll get to that one some other time, okay? The second item on our double-consciousness double billing was suggested by friend of the show Siskoid. We were quite impressed with The Jacket (2005), which had somehow flown under our time sensors. It was directed by John Maybury and it stars Adrien Brody, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keira Knightly, Kris Kristofferson, Kelly Lynch, Brad Renfro, and Daniel Craig. Also, it was filmed in Ormstown, Québec, a place David knows well. For those listening at home, the final tune wasn't sung by Bryan Ferry (as we suppose on the cast), it's actually Iggy Pop! Please don't hesitate to contact us, either at anotherkindofdistance@gmail.com, on our Facebook Page, our Twitter account (@TimeTravelFilms), or David's Tumblr (where you'll find a bunch of images). We're now on all of the podcast delivery services, including iTunes, TuneIn radio and Stitcher, so please rate/review us there, if you can!
This time around DM and Vinnie talk about the 2005 film staring Adrian Brody, The Jacket.
m Adventskalender bin ich darum bemüht, einen Film in etwa 2 Minuten knapp vorzustellen. Am 11.12. widme ich mich "The Jacket" von John Maybury.
