Robin Daly speaks at the 2025 Public Forum on Healing with Integrative Cancer Care in February. The gathering was designed to bridges wisdom traditions with emerging frontiers in healing. This year's forum explores transformation through the intersections of integrative cancer care with consciousness and healing arts, featuring distinguished speakers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. The day included engaging presentations on patient advocacy, expressive arts, and innovative approaches to cancer care. Robin Daly is Chairman & Founder of Yes to Life, a UK Registered Charity. Robin has no training or background in healthcare, but was plunged into the arena in 1990 when his youngest daughter Bryony was diagnosed with cancer, aged 9. She went on to be re-diagnosed twice with treatment-related cancers, eventually dying at 23. The immense difficulties the family faced introducing treatment choices that reflected their own understanding of health and wellbeing prompted him to set up Yes to Life in 2004 to help others in similar situations, and to advocate on behalf of patients for what is now called Integrative Oncology. Yes to Life is now celebrating its 20th Anniversary having helped many thousands with cancer with a wide range of supportive resources, and continues to play a key role in changing the discussion around cancer care. In this conversation with the founders of LoCal Beer, fostering a creative culture and the process of distinguishing strong ideas from weaker ones. Creativity Doesn't Require a Huge Budget – The discussion emphasized that disruptive ideas don't always need big budgets. Using parody and playful marketing can create impactful branding moments. The "Golden Mead" Campaign for Camden Town Brewery – A spontaneous idea born from reading a news headline led to a limited-edition honey mead beer celebrating footballer Beth Mead's success during the Women's Euros. The concept was quickly approved and went from idea to launch in just three weeks. The Stella Artois Unfiltered "Naked Pub Signs" Activation – To extend the brand's “Oh Natural” campaign, the team created nude versions of traditional British pub signs. This idea took a year to develop but resulted in a unique, well-received activation.Creative Sales Tactics for Retail Partnerships – To get a meeting with Co-op buyers, the team made a Spotify playlist where each song spelled out a pitch. Later, they sent a sample box with an inflatable balloon that popped out with a message from their mascot. The Fine Line in Outreach to Retail Buyers – The founders discussed the challenge of standing out without being overly persistent. While creative approaches like playlists and gifts worked, overly aggressive tactics—such as showing up unannounced—led to negative reactions from retailers.Espresso's are powered by our brand new sponsor, Unleashed!1. Today I'm delighted to welcome back one of The Shift's very first guests, journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon. Bryony has been a columnist on the Telegraph for over 20 years and for ten of those she has been writing candidly about her own experiences of addiction and mental illness. She is the best selling author of Mad Girl and The Wrong Knickers and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates a global peer support network that encourages people with mental health issues to connect, for which she has won several awards. She also, FWIW, ran the London marathon in her knickers. Three years after her first visit to The Shift, Bryony is back - older, wiser (yes really) - and with a new book, the pertinently titled, Mad Woman, which discusses her struggles with burnout, binge eating and, yep, you guessed it, fluctuating hormones. Bryony joined me from bed in south London to talk about maintaining a public facade when you're privately falling apart, finally learning to feed herself properly at 43, discovering all the women in her family went into menopause in their early 40s, why she's done with feeling like she's the problem and how Davina McCall saved her life! If you'd like to sponsor Bryony's Big Challenge, you can find out more here. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Mad Woman by Bryony Gordon and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Bryony Angell writes about birding culture and lifestyle. Her latest exploration into our relationship with birds is bird-friendly comestibles. In this episode, we talk about cocoa grown by Zorzal in the Dominican Republic, a bird reserve and farm certified as 100% bird-friendly by the Smithsonian Institute. Three chocolatiers based in the U.S. use Zorzal's cocoa in their bars and other chocolate products: Raaka Chocolate, Dandelion Chocolate , and Fruition Chocolate. Georgia has eaten bars by Raaka and Fruition--two thumbs up. Daisy Edgar-Jones and her co-star Paul Mescal rocketed into the public gaze in the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel Normal People. Following a couple of notable film performances Daisy is now on stage as the formidable, if unhappy, Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She joins Anita Rani live in the Woman's Hour studio. It's the rape trial that has shocked the world. Gisèle Pelicot's ex-husband Dominique was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison for her rape, alongside 50 other men. We hear Gisèle's own words, from the BBC's Andrew Harding who has covered the trial from the beginning, and French journalist and founder of The Women's Voices website Cynthia Illouz. Anita then speaks to Dr Caroline Copeland, senior lecturer in pharmacology and toxicology at King's College London, about the term chemical submission, which has gained more recognition during the trial.Hundreds of women in labour are being diverted from their birth hospital of choice. Exclusive research done by the Health Service Journal found some were sent hundreds of miles from home to different hospital Trusts. The main reason was because of staff shortages or because midwifery teams lacked the right skill-mix for a delivery to be safe for the baby and the mother. Anita is joined by Health Service Journal Senior Correspondent Emily Townsend who carried out this investigation and Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives, to discuss.Bryony Page, Olympic medallist and trailblazer for British gymnastics, made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning Team GB's first ever trampoline gold. Known for her resilience and determination, she reflects with Anita on the achievements and challenges of her career, and shares her hopes for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Roughly a quarter of chocolate sales in the US and the UK occur around the holidays at the end of the year. And if you are listening to this podcast, you are statistically almost certain to be participating. What does that have to do with birds? Well, like coffee before it, chocolate now comes in a bird friendly version. It's the subject of a recent article in Birdwatcher's Digest by Bryony Angell a Washington based birder and writer on birding culture. She joins us to talk about what that certification means for birds and chocolate-lovers alike. Also, congratulations to the full slate of 2024 ABA Awards recipients and thanks for all you do for the birding community. Subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a rating or a review if you are so inclined! We appreciate it! And don't forget to give to the ABA's End of Year Appeal! Thanks!
