Padraig McCormack, dairy advisor at Teagasc Moorepark, joins Stuart Childs on this week's Dairy Edge to discuss what's currently happening on the farms in his area. Padraig outlines the grazing situation in the area which is beginning to get back on track followed a prolonged spell of dry weather a month ago. Quality has been variable but people are looking at removing surplus in the coming week as growth is exceeding demand on average. Padraig spoke about fertiliser advice from nitrogen rates to sulphur and also P and K where surplus is removed.  Padraig discussed breeding performance in his area which is looking good and he reminded listeners to plan a date to stop breeding prior to July 20th with it being the cut off to avoid May calvers in 2026.  From his profit monitor meetings in the spring of 25, the justification for calving a cow in May is non-existent given the cost of keeping the cow and the return she will generate in her 2025 lactation. Padraig then tells us about the investments that his clients are considering with slurry storage on some people's minds but clarity around storage requirements and planning is slowing movement in that area.  Investing in things to make life easier is where it is at with people looking to avail of grants on heat detection systems, drafting gates and calf feeders.    Finally, Padraig ends by telling us that currently, his groups are either planning or heading away on some visits away from their own farms. He suggests that people should plan to take holidays and plan to get a few days off when things quieten down once breeding is finished and he reminds listeners of the excellent day out that is the Moorepark Open day coming up on July 2nd.   For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

I'm back with a new volume of standalone episodes on the history and politics of Irish republicanism! In this episode I talk to Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, author of Burn Them Out! a history of the Irish far right, recently published by Bloomsbury. Padraig has written several non-fiction books on the Irish revolutionary period, including bestselling The Disappeared, which explores all the forced disappearances arising from political violence in 20th-century Ireland, and Revolution, which was shortlisted for the 2011 Irish Book Awards. In November 2023, the Dublin riots shocked Ireland and the wider world. They were sparked by a knife attack by an immigrant on three children. Inflammatory online rumours spread in minutes. Part of the north inner city were wrecked, cars and buses torched, and protestors wreaked havoc on the streets for hours. Until very recently, Ireland had prided itself on having escaped the wave of far-right, xenophobic populism now rampant throughout Europe. That complacency has been rudely challenged. In Burn Them Out!, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc explores the long history that has led to this pivotal moment. He uncovers the pervasive anti-Semitism of the Irish political elite in the 1920s and 30s, the energetic efforts of Mosley and other British fascists to extend their movement to the North of Ireland, the IRA's alliance with Nazi Germany in the 40s and the many ultra-Catholic, anti-communist Irish movements that were millimetres away from fascism As is befitting the nature of this podcast we will be discussing the rise of the Irish far right and its history within the context of republican responses to fascism. From the Easter Rising through to the Troubles and the recent, disgraceful, cynical appropration of Irish republican aesthetics by the fascist far right.

You can do that PubSong.com or Just send an email to follow@celtfather. 5:39 - IS IT ST PADDY'S DAY OR ST PATTY'S DAY St Paddy's Day is the shortened version of St Patrick's Day. However, that shortened name is often misspelled. It should be spelled Paddy. Not Patty. Patty is a girls name. Paddy is short for the Irish name Padraig. That's from my 11 St Patrick's Day Facts episode of this podcast. I learned from The Daily Difference, the newsletter of the Carbon Almanac that the Episocopal Church used their environmental voice with their wallet. In 2015, the Episcopal Church made a commitment to divest fossil fuel investments from its holdings of around $500 million. And they honored that commitment just before the end of 2024. We all have the power of our voice, our wallet and our time to support climate initiatives. We are all in a weird position these days. There's a billionaire stripping government services from people who need them, just so he can get a huge tax cut. No matter where you stand on that situation, I don't think there's a single person in America who think that billionaires and corporations need a tax cut. Let me know if I'm wrong. Sadly, we may not have the power to stop corporate entitlements. But we do have the power of our wallets. We can support businesses and organizations who are doing good things to protect the environment and protect individuals like you and me. Take a moment and think about where your money is going. If you're gonna play the stock market, will you consider divesting your fossil fuel investments? 9:02 - Marc Gunn “Blue Sun” from As Long As I'm Flyin' Learn more about Blue Sun in this episode. Last week, Mayo farmer Padraig Nally, the man who was jailed for less than a year for the manslaughter of an intruder in his home near Lough Corrib in 2004, died. He was 81 years of age.Two decades ago, his shooting of John ‘Frog' Ward became one of the most divisive murder cases in Ireland. Nally was sentenced to six years' imprisonment for the manslaughter of Ward. However, his conviction was quashed in a retrial when he was found not guilty of manslaughter. It was a case that divided opinion across the country. Nally argued self-defence, saying “there was only one way out of it: it had to be him, or it had to be me”.What exactly happened in November 2004, why was Nally's initial conviction quashed and why are people still speaking about this case 20 years later?Mick Clifford, special correspondent with The Irish Examiner who covered Nally's case at the time joins the podcast.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. The importance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on farms

Padraig O'Connor, Dairy Technician at Teagasc Grange joins Stuart Childs on this week's Dairy Edge to discuss the role of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) on farms. Padraig explains that the SOP is a step by step guide to completing a task. They are suitable for many tasks on farms such as preparing for milking, milking itself, treating a cow with mastitis and how to wash the milking machine correctly amongst many others. SOPs are an extremely useful way of communication and can help avoid mistakes being made due to misunderstanding. While often associated with farms that employ people, they have an equally important role to play on owner operator farms to help during holiday periods, during busy periods where help is needed which may be family or externally sourced, but most especially in the event of any incident which renders the farmer unable to do tasks with little or no notice requiring people to jump in to help to keep the show on the road. Padraig says that it is as simple as taking a piece of paper and recording the steps to complete the task in question, then getting someone that is preferably not overly familiar with the task to follow the instructions and ‘road test' them. They may need tweaking and once happy with it, it should be laminated to make it waterproof and robust and placed in a visible location near the point of use. Padraig, Martina Gormley and Francis Quigley have some great information on SOPs and developing them for your own farm available at: https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/standard-operating-procedures/ For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

Twenty years ago this week marked the beginning of one of Ireland's most divisive murder cases. The shooting of John 'Frog' Ward, by the Mayo farmer Padraig Nally. It was a case that inspired a media frenzy, owing in no small part to the fact that the farmer had become the first person to be tried for murder in Mayo in over a century. In today's episode, we revisit the death of John 'Frog' Ward, the polarising reaction to the trial and the significant legal implications it inspired. “Golfers need to get better at hitting their next shot.” Recently, I was fortunate enough to spend the day with three-time major champion and Hall of Fame golfer Padraig Harrington. During one of our conversations, the topic of amateur golfers came up, and he said something that really stuck with me: golfers need to get better at hitting their next shot. What he meant was the ability to focus solely on the task in front of you—letting go of distractions and not allowing the results (positive or negative) of your previous shot to affect the one you're about to hit. This resonated with me because I've noticed both myself and some of my students falling into this trap lately. Even though we're nearing the end of the year, I still want golfers to strive to finish their season on a high note. So today, I'm sharing what Padraig's quote meant to me, how I've incorporated it into my own process, and a few takeaways that might help you play better golf. Want more from me?
