Etnogrāfs un afrikāņu kultūras pētnieks Ziedonis Ligers (1917–2001) Latvijā pagaidām ir maz zināma personība. Liecības par viņa dzīvi glabājas dzimtajā pusē – Kalnciema muzejā. Latvijas Antropoloģijas biedrības pētnieki šobrīd ķērušies pie pirmā starptautiski atzītā latviešu antropologa dzīvesstāsta un veikuma izzināšanas, kā arī pie Francijā dzīvojušā zinātnieka dokumentu daļējas atgriešanās dzimtenē. Ziedonis Ligers 1944. gadā, vācu okupācijai mijoties ar padomju karaspēka ienākšanu, atstāja Latviju, un neatgriezās arī pēc Latvijas valstiskās neatkarības atjaunošanas. Viņa dzīve aizritēja desmit gadu ekspedīcijā Āfrikā un viņa savrupnamā Francijā, Normandijā. Mūžībā Ziedonis Ligers aizgāja 2001. gadā, un šobrīd tiek spriests par viņa mantojuma tālāko likteni. Lai apliecinātu Latvijas ieinteresētību glabāt liecības par latviešu zinātnieka Ziedoņa Ligera dzīvi, 2024. gada rudenī iepazīties ar viņa mantojumu un tā glabātājiem uz Franciju devās antropoloģes Agita Lūse un Anna Griķe, kā arī Kalnciema muzeja vadītājs Dāvis Beitlers. Visi trīs Ziedoņa Ligera dzīvesstāstā ieinteresētie pētnieki arī ir raidījuma viesi. 1931. gadā Ligers absolvēja Kalnciema sešgadīgo pamatskolu un diezgan netipiski kalnciemiešiem, kuri parasti izvēlējās mācīties tuvākajā Jelgava, uzsāka mācības Rīgas 2. ģimnāzijā. 1936. gadā iestājās Latvijas Universitātes Tautsaimniecības un tiesību zinātņu fakultātē, un viņš arī ir ieguvis jurista diplomu, pēc laulībām ar Gaidu Ģinteri kādu laiku dzīvoja Berlīnē, kur papildinājās krimināltiesībās. Taču paralēli Ziedonis Ligers apmeklēja lekciju kursus Filoloģijas fakultātes vēstures nodaļā, kas arī izrādījās viņa dzīves lielā kaislība. Jau studiju laikā apceļoja Franciju, Beļģiju, Vāciju, studējot arhīvu un muzeju materiālus, viena no viņa pētījumu tēmās bija Baltijas pilsētu vēsture.  1939. gadā Ligers sāka strādāt Filoloģijas fakultātē par Etnogrāfijas katedras subasistentu, šai laikā viņš aktīvi vāc materiālus par latviešu etnogrāfiju, īpaši pievēršoties zvejas tradīcijām. Izziņas literatūrā iepretim Ziedoņa Ligera vārdam rakstīts ne tikai “latviešu etnogrāfs” vai “jurists”, bet arī “mākslas vēsturnieks”. Dāvis Beitlers izsaka nožēlu, ka nesen iznākušajā mākslas albumā par scenogrāfu un gleznotāju Ludolfu Libertu Ziedoņa Ligera vārds pat nav pieminēts. Nu jā, droši vien nebija pieejama informācija. Lai gan ar Ziedoni Ligeru ar Ludolfu Libertu saistījusi ne tikai draudzība, viņš uzrakstījis arī grāmatu. Kāds bija Ziedonis Ligers? No nostāstiem var secināt, ka visai pretrunīga personība. Neuzticējies pasaulei, mūža garumā attiecības uzturējis tikai ar jaunības draugiem, māti, kura Latvijā nodzīvoja līdz pagājušā gadsimta sešdesmitajiem, un  citiem kalnciemiešiem, kas pēc neatkarības atgūšanas viņu apmeklēja arī Francijā. Un vienlaikus viņa biogrāfijā rodams arī pavisam citāds personības raksturojums – pratis iegūt Lielupes zvejnieku uzticēšanos, apgrozījies mākslinieku aprindās, mācējis vairākas valodas. Vācu okupācijas laiks acīmredzami bijis labvēlīgs Ziedoņa Ligera darbībai, lai gan pētāmi vēl būtu šīs labvēlības iemesli.  1944. gads un Latvijas atstāšana pārvelk strīpu Ziedoņa Ligera kā latviešu etnogrāfa karjerai. Vispirms Ziedonis Ligers bēgļu gaitās devās uz Vāciju, kādu laiku studēja Heidelbergas universitātē, un tikai tad devās uz Franciju. Kur Kānas universitātē 1946. gadā aizstāvēja doktora disertāciju par Latvijas un Igaunijas pilsētu vēsturi, kas gadu vēlāk tika izdota kā grāmata, kā arī lasīja lekcijas par Ēģiptes kultūras vēsturi. Savukārt Sorbonnas Universitātē Humanitāro zinātņu fakultātē 1952. gadā aizstāvēja doktora disertāciju par medībām, vākšanu un zveju Latvijā, un tā publicēta grāmatā 1953. gadā. Sorbonnas universitātē veiktais pētījums izrādījās liktenīgais pagrieziens: Francijas valdības uzdevumā 1955. gadā Ziedonis Ligers kopā ar sievu Gaidu devās ekspedīcijā ar Francijas Nacionālā zinātniskās pētniecības centra peldošo laboratoriju pa Nigēras upi Rietumāfrikā. Pēc ekspedīcijas vadītāja antropologa Marsela Griola nāves 1956. gadā uzņēmās tās vadību. Vairāk nekā desmit gadus Ligeri kopā ar citiem ekspedīcijas dalībniekiem kuģoja pa Nigēras upi un ar to saistītajiem ezeriem, klātienē pētīja Āfrikas tautu ticējumus, paražas un lietišķo mākslu, sevišķi pievēršoties bozo tautai Mali. Iepazīstot Ziedoņa Ligera mantojumu, pētnieki atraduši kasti ar vēstulēm. Pētniekiem acis iemirdzējušās. Tūlīt izdosies iepazīt zinātnieku kā cilvēku, izdzirdēt vēstulēs viņa paša balsi. Izrādījies, ka tās ir tikai aploksnes. Ziedonis Ligers krājis un kolekcionējis daudz ko, tai skaitā arī pastmarkas. Bet viņa personība - tas lielā mērā joprojām ir noslēpums. Kara bēglis attiecībā pret Latviju. Francijas akadēmiskajā vidē nokavējis savu iznācienu. Un vienlaikus viņa mūža veikumam pilnīgi noteikti ir vērtība. Tikai jāsagaida īstais brīdis, īstā iespēja. Interneta resursos glabājas informācija, ka pēc Latvijas valsts neatkarības atgūšanas, 1990. gados Ziedonis Ligers savas bērnības skolas (tagadējās Kalnciema vidusskolas) bibliotekārei dāvinājis grāmatas dažādās valodās. Šķiet, ka nesen tapušais Kalnciema muzejs arī būs tā vieta, kur glabāsies fiziskās liecības par Ziedoņa Ligera veikumu. Pārskatāmā nākotnē, jau šogad, plānots vēl viens brauciens uz Normandiju Francijā. Antropoloģes Agita Lūse, Anna Griķe, vēsturnieks Dāvis Beitlers turpina Ziedoņa Ligera piemiņas atjaunošanu Latvijas zinātnes vēstures lappusēs un viņa dzimtajā Kalnciemā, kur Rīgas Liepājas šosejas malā joprojām atrodas mājas vieta – Ziedoņi.

In den USA lebt der Stachelrochen Charlotte in einem Aquarium zusammen mit zwei Haien. Charlotte ist nun schwanger – wohlgemerkt, ohne Kontakt zu Artgenossen zu haben. Was ist passiert? Schwanger ist in dem Falle ein falsches Menschengleichnis. Haie und Rochen gehören ja zu den Tierarten, die Eier legen. Einige der Knorpelfische behalten die Eier aber im Körper und lassen die Jungtiere innerhalb des Muttertieres schlüpfen. Das beantwortet meine Frage nicht. Ist der Rochen von einem Hai befruchtet worden, oder hat er das selbst gemacht? Es deutet alles auf eine Jungfernzeugung hin, Fachchinesisch: Parthenogenese. Diese Selbstbefruchtung kommt vor allem bei Gliederfüßern, Weichtieren, Echsen und Fischen vor. Dass eines der Hai-Männchen gewissermaßen als Vater infrage käme, ist sehr unwahrscheinlich. Eine Kreuzung beider Arten wäre vermutlich auch nicht lebensfähig, denn sie sind nur sehr entfernt miteinander verwandt. Das ist bei Tigern und Löwen anders. Die kommen in der Natur in unterschiedlichen Lebensräumen vor, sodass sie bisher nur künstlich gekreuzt wurden. Richtig. Es gibt lebende Exemplare des »Ligers«. Die Arten aber sind näher verwandt. Der letzte gemeinsame Verwandte von Rochen und Hai dagegen ist 300 Millionen Jahre her. Zurück zu Charlotte. Warum befruchten die Rochen sich selbst? Es gibt einen Grundinstinkt, der das Verhalten aller Arten prägt – partiell sogar das des Menschen, obwohl man da manchmal Zweifel hat: die Arterhaltung. Und wenn ein geschlechtsreifes Weibchen einer Tierart, bei der das biologisch geht, sich lange nicht fortpflanzen kann, dann kann die Parthenogenese ausgelöst werden. Allerdings ist das bei dieser Art von Stachelrochen noch nie beobachtet worden. Kommt dieses Verhalten nur in Gefangenschaft vor? In freier Wildbahn gibt es wenig Veranlassung dazu. Die Viecher können weit schwimmen. Haie zum Beispiel schwimmen zur Paarung zum Teil Zehntausende Kilometer. Rochen sind zwar standortfester, befinden sich aber meist in Gesellschaft von Artgenossen. Die Parthenogenese hat jedoch auch Nachteile: Es kommen immer nur Weibchen heraus. Warum? Weil dem Muttertier nur der Chromosomensatz von sich selbst zur Verfügung steht. Das ist natürlich ein Problem, weil Charlottes Nachkommen vor dem gleichen Problem wie sie stehen. Richtig. Hinzu kommt: Die Parthenogenese produziert mehr oder minder dasselbe wie eine langjährige Inzucht. Und diese hat den gravierenden Nachteil, dass für bestimmte Krankheiten dann eine höhere Empfänglichkeit besteht. Nicht nur das. Es kommt vermehrt zu Gendefekten. Eben. Und die können unter Umständen zu schweren Behinderungen führen. Auch bei Tieren. Wurde die Parthenogenese bei Säugetieren beobachtet? Nein, bei Säugern ist die Jungfernzeugung aufgrund der Spezifik der Verbindungen von Eizellen und Spermatozoen nicht möglich.

Stāsta vēsturnieks un ērģelnieks Dāvis Beitlers Latvieši, zināms, atstājuši savas pēdas daudzās jomās visā pasaulē — pat Āfrikas kultūras pētniecībā. Dažus soļus šai virzienā spēris mūsu vēstures klasiķis Francis Balodis, kurš savu pētnieka mūžu būtībā tomēr veltījis Latvijas senvēsturei. Turpretī kāds cits latviešu pētnieks sevi pa īstam apliecinājis tieši Āfrikas izpētē, kas nesusi viņam starptautisku atpazīstamību. Un tas ir latviešu etnogrāfs Ziedonis Ligers (1917–2001) — apdāvināts afrikāņu kultūras pētnieks sociālās antropoloģijas gaismā, arī spilgta un neparasta personība. Ligers dzimis 1917. gadā Petrogradā, audzis un skoloties sācis Kalnciemā, vēlāk skolojies starpkaru un Otrā pasaules kara laika Rīgā. Studējis etnogrāfiju un tiesībzinātni, bet jau studenta gados izpaudies vairākās kultūras jomās — pētījis Baltijas pilsētu vēsturi, apbraukājis Vakareiropu, vācot materiālus par Baltijas pilsētu vēsturi, iedraudzējies ar vairākiem Latvijas gleznotājiem, sakārtojis un izdevis viņiem veltītus reprodukciju albumus ar biogrāfiskām apcerēm, kuru vidū īpaši izceļams Ludolfam Libertam veltītais albums. Tāpat Ligers jau jaunībā teicami zīmējis, mīlējis fotografēt un mazliet vārsmojis, agri izkopis vācu un arī angļu mēles prasmi, sastādījis vārdnīcas karavīriem. Tomēr visvairāk jaunieti saistīja etnogrāfija. Kara priekšvakarā viņš sāka pētīt seno zveju iekšējos ūdeņos, kā arī etnogrāfisko dravniecību un amatniecību; vācu okupācijas laikā iznāca Ligera monogrāfija “Latviešu tautas kultūra”. Iesāktā latviešu kultūras izziņa aprāvās 1944. gada rudenī, kad Ligers ar sievu Gaidu, slavenā latviešu bibliogrāfa Augusta Ģintera brāļameitu, devās bēgļu gaitās uz Rietumiem. Tomēr viņu liktenī maz kopīga ar to, ko izdzīvoja vairākums trimdinieku: Ligeri izceļoja, līdzi paņemot gan ievērojamu Latvijas mākslinieku gleznas, gan daļu savas teicamās bibliotēkas, jau tūlīt pēc kara noīrēja senu un lepnu savrupnamu Bajē pilsētā Normandijā, Francijā. Dažu gadu laikā Ligers spoži apguva franču valodu un, apkopojot agrāk izpētīto, ieguva etnogrāfijas vai etnoloģijas doktora grādu Sorbonnas Universitātē; un jaunajam doktoram, kurš latviešu etnogrāfiju svešumā pilnvērtīgi pētīt nebūtu varējis, piedāvāja doties ekspedīcijā uz Rietumāfriku — izzināt Nigērijas apkaimes cilšu kultūru Francijas Nacionālā zinātniskās pētniecības centra uzdevumā. Ligeriem nebija bērnu, un viņi abi Āfrikā aizvadīja desmit gadus, dzīvojot ekspedīcijai īpaši būvētā peldlīdzeklī. Un tik ilgstoša šāda veida pētniecība izrādījās iezīmīga visas pasaules zinātnes vēsturē. Arī tāpēc, ka Ligers, būdams ģeniāls poliglots, īsā laikā apguva seno cilšu valodas un tā spēja izprast afrikāņu materiālo un garīgo kultūru daudz dziļāk nekā vairums viņa laikabiedru. Ligers šajās ciltīs kļuva par savējo un pēc ekspedīcijas par afrikāņu sadāvāto zeltu varēja nopirkt iepriekš noīrēto savrupnamu ar parku. Ziedonis Ligers sarakstījis desmitiem saturā un vizuālajā ietērpā iespaidīgu grāmatu par nigēriešu kultūru. Starptautiski izskanēja Ligera teorija par to, ka līdz pat mūsdienām dažas Āfrikas ciltis saglabājušas elementus no Senās Ēģiptes kultūras. Un, kaut gan šis pieļāvums tapa itin kā atspēkots, tas izsauca palielu akadēmisko viļņošanos. Ligers izveidojis vienu no lielākajām privātajām bibliotēkām latviešu trimdā, tomēr no tautiešu sabiedriskās dzīves Ligeri turējušies zināmā mērā savrup. Arī ar Trešajā atmodā atdzimušo Latviju Ziedonim izveidojās vēsas un turklāt visai samezglotas attiecības. 1990. gadā vēstures profesors Heinrihs Strods pasludināja, ka Ligers jau vairākus gadus kā miris no Āfrikā ieperinātas malārijas... Un šis paziņojums tobrīd vēl ne tuvu ne mirušo etnogrāfu aizvainoja un satrauca tiktāl, ka viņš būtībā vairījās biedroties ar atjaunotās Latvijas politisko un kultūras eliti. Iespējams, bija vēl kādi iemesli… Pēc sievas Gaidas nāves, kas piezagās 1989. gadā, Ziedonis par sievu apņēma laosieti, un pēc etnogrāfa aiziešanas 2001. gadā viņa taustāmais mantojums tika izkaisīts pa pasauli; Latvijā nonākušas tikai nedaudzas liecības, un, iespējams, spilgtākās no tām glabājas Ligera bērnības pusē — Kalnciema muzejā, kuram tās nodevuši izcilā zinātnieka (pēc dažām ziņām — arī profesora) jaunības draugu mantinieki. Turpat netālu (mūsdienās — Valgundes pagastā) pašā Rīgas–Liepājas lielceļa malā, joprojām atrodas arī izcilā etnogrāfa bērnības mājvieta, kas nosaukta viņa vārdā — par Ziedoņiem.

And for a long time scientists believed it was pretty much impossible for those action figures to mix and make a new kind of action figure that was able to have its own babies (dog beetles? Baldberries? Nah). But, today we tell the story of a four-legged beast in Kentucky whose existence is upending scientific beliefs. After almost 20 years of living her life as a hybrid (a mix between a horse and a donkey), believed to be incapable of having babies, Peanut the mule shocked the world by doing the impossible.
