Labour's Ayesha Verrall says tobacco's unique harm is why industry links to Government need tighter checks. She's put forward a Members' Bill designed to ban any linked people working on tobacco policy. Labour hopes it'll have cross-party support. Verrall says other products, like vaping, don't need such strong restrictions - but tobacco's incredibly deadly. "It kills half the people that use it - we don't have other products like that. So that's why we need this specific focus on tobacco." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Labour's Ayesha Verrall has stepped up to defend her accusations against Health Commissioner Lester Levy. Levy - who was brought in to replace the agency's board after financial concerns were raised - is being grilled by MPs for the organisation's Annual Review. Verrall accused Levy of having 'a reputation of cooking the books' - citing examples of past roles. She says recent accounts have been presented in a 'non-conventional' way. "That's exactly what I'm saying - this is pretty fishy. You have this process that is being used to justify health cuts where the Auditor-General says the accounting treatment is not right." Sinn Féin's Health Spokesperson admits Ennis General is the "most obvious" location for a Model Three hospital, but has stopped short of a guarantee. The party has devised what it's described as the most ambitious helathcare plan ever produced by a political party, which it would introduce if voted into Government. It's promising free prescription medicines to all households, 5 thousand more hospital beds and a new Emergency Department for the Midwest. Sinn Fein Health Spokesperson David Cullinane has told Clare FM's Morning Focus that he believes a second emergency department can be delivered for this region, but that a decision on its location must be guided by clinicians.

An RNZ investigation has revealed the Associate Health Minister Casey Costello rejected official's urges to retain parts of the smokefree laws she is planning to repeal. Labour says the pandemic showed a need for more local healthcare worker training. The party's announced it'll train another 335 doctors every year from 2027- and increase medical school places from next year. Health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall says they've already increased the workforce by 2,000 people. National's Health spokesperson Shane Reti says he's hopeful of fixing the health portfolio. The party's pledging to bring back targets if elected – focusing on shorter ED stays, faster cancer treatment and child immunisation rates. It also wants shorter wait times for first specialist assessments and surgery. Reti told Mike Hosking he's committed to getting the system to a point where it's out of the political spotlight. National has announced it plans to bring back health targets, if the party gets into power come October. Leader Chris Luxon confirmed the party would bring back targets - including for emergency departments, with 95 percent of patients to be admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours. There are also new targets to quash wait times for specialist assessment and surgery, but no percentage figures have been committed to. Health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti says targets will focus attention and funding to better serve the public- and clinicians agree. "There's no simpler way to put it- when you set a target, you have a requirement to hold yourself accountable, you hold providers accountable, you hold the system accountable. At the end of the day, that's what politicians should be doing." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Labour's Health spokesperson is labelling the party's latest dental policy "ambitious". The party's promising to offer free basic dental care for under 30-year-olds by 2030 if it holds onto power. The policy would cost $390 million and start in 2025. Ayesha Verrall told Mike Hosking it would be a big step. “It is a fundamental change in what we see the responsibility of the public health system to be by moving from 18 to 30 as your eligibility for free dental care.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Maori Health Authority is already tracking behind government commitments. The Hauora Maori Advisory Committee report shows Te Aka Whai Ora underspent by about $66 million in its first financial year. National's Health Spokesman Shane Reti told Mike Hosking that he's surprised how bad things are. He says only Maori staff were transferred over from the old DHBs, instead of picking people who had the skills needed. However, the Government says this isn't true. They say transfers from the old DHB's and Manatu Hauora included transfers of business units and functions like the Maori Health Directorate and some of the Commissioning functions. These business units have both Maori and non-Maori staff. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

National's health spokesperson is suspicious of Ayesha Verrall's requested delay in publishing correct clinical performance data. The Health Minister had corrected an answer to Parliament, admitting her office stopped data being released because of the timing of other Government announcements. Shane Reti says there's something murky surrounding Ayesha Verrall's request, comparing it to Jan Tinetti's earlier actions. The Green Party plans to table an amendment to the Therapeutic Products Bill to ban advertising for prescription medicines. New Zealand and the United States are the only two countries that allow unrestricted advertising of branded prescription medication. ACT's Health spokesperson says it's 'shady' that the Government hasn't divulged the storage costs of expiring RATs. Health Minister Ayesha Verrall says Te Whatu Ora needs to 'get on with' finding options for the use of these leftover RAT tests- but no solution has been found. ACT's Brooke van Velden says the Government either doesn't know the warehousing costs of all these tests- or they don't want to reveal the answer. "Either she doesn't know- in which case that's shocking mismanagement, this is $160 million of taxpayer money and they don't know where it is and we should expect better- or they're not being transparent." Surgeons are now being required to consider a patient's ethnicity alongside other factors when deciding who should get an operation first. Several surgeons say they are upset by the policy, which was introduced in Auckland in February and gives priority to Māori and Pacific Island patients, on the grounds that they have historically had unequal access to healthcare. The other categories on the waitlist are clinical priority, time already spent on the waitlist, location and deprivation level. The Immigration Minister is expecting thousands of people to arrive on our shores as a result of immigration changes in the healthcare sector. 32 new health jobs have been added to the Straight to Residency pathway on the Green List. They include dentists, paramedics, optometrists and pharmacists. Immigration Minister Michael Wood told Tim Dower earlier this morning that some of these roles hadn't had a lot of advocacy previously, but after sitting down with the sector, they've been added. National Health spokesperson, Dr Shane Reti, heard the Minister's comments and called Kerre Woodham Mornings to refute those claims. Reti says Michael Wood is blatantly wrong, clearly out of touch and two documents attest to that. "First of all an OIA from February 2022, a year ago, that shows the Ministry of Health requesting that key health roles such as dentists, pharmacists, physios and social workers be added to the green list. "Then if we go a year further back than that, a letter from Keriana Brooking on behalf of all DHBs to the minister and to MBIE saying that if the immigration settings were not changed we would not quote 'avert a health crisis.'"
