In October 2024, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an extradition treaty aimed at facilitating the transfer of individuals wanted for serious crimes, notably targeting members of the Kinahan cartel residing in Dubai. This agreement, formalized by Ireland's Justice Minister Helen McEntee and UAE's Minister Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad al Nuaimi, represents a significant step in international cooperation against organized crime. The treaty's implementation is expected to expedite the extradition process, enabling Irish authorities to bring alleged criminals back to face justice.Recent developments indicate that authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle the Kinahan cartel's operations. Concern has emerged that figures documenting a rise in domestic abuse incidents in Clare are just the tip of the iceberg. Justice Minister Helen McEntee has revealed the number of domestic abuse incidents in the Clare/Tipperary Garda Division more than tripled over the past decade, from 719 in 2014 to 2,423 in 2023. The figures, compiled from the results of a search of the Garda PULSE system last May, also show there were 607 such incidents recorded in the first quarter of this year alone. Clare Aontú General Election Candidate June Dillon believes many more incidents go unreported and she insists the provision of adequate services as well as the promotion of societal change needs to be prioritised by Government. Clare Haven, meanwhile, has recorded an 86% increase in those seeking refuge over the past seven years and a 182% increase in the number of those availing of non-refuge supports such as legal support, mental health support or counselling services. Acting Manager of Service, Brenda Breathnach has described as "staggering" the number of people who have passed through their doors seeking help and she's warning the rising numbers are not sustainable.

Temple Bar Culture Night incident raises questions & actions

Last Friday, Culture Night in Dublin, the Tola Vintage shop in Temple Bar's annual block party was shut down by the Gardaí, and three people were arrested. The police actions were met with criticism for the use of excessive force and suggestions of an underlying racial motivation. The Gardaí's statement about the matter cited "public safety concerns" but that doesn't explain how an innocuous gathering of people inside and outside a vintage shop escalated into baton-charging, threats of pepper-spray and a disproportionate number of guards clearing the busy Temple Bar area with an unwarranted heavy-handiness.The incident happened, in an increasingly hostile environment for minority communities in Ireland. Why was a block party in Temple Bar, that was giving no immediate pressing trouble, met with violence, while violence at far right protests and the burning of buildings earmarked for asylum seekers goes unpunished?Ireland is seeing an increasing number of anti-immigrant accounts online, and the verbal abuse of people of colour has increased, while just this week, the government's Justice Minister Helen McEntee has dropped the incitement or hate speech sections of the Criminal Justice Bill.On this week's podcast, we talk to Silent Jee, a DJ on the night about what went down from his perspective, and how the guards showing up at the block party is nothing new. We explore how these kinds of actions are familiar to black and POC in Ireland's creative community. We talk to Mo Cultivation's Bekah Molony about what allies and peers can do and how nothing has changed since the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Clare Criminal Barristers Fighting For Justice In Pay Dispute

Clare's Criminal Barristers have begun withdrawing their services today, as part of three days of planned industrial action. The legal professionals are warning of a potential recruitment crisis in the sector, unless pay cuts introduced in response to the recession in 2009 are reversed. Criminal cases at sixteen courthouses, including Ennis won't be heard today as cases cannot proceed without the presence of a criminal barrister. The pay dispute, which has resulted in the withdrawal of services by Barristers, has the potential to cause a significant case backlog, as two more days of industrial action are planned later this month. The demonstration is aiming to reverse cuts introduced in 2009 under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act (FEMPI), which have still not been restored, despite a public sector pay agreement in place to do so. Last June, Justice Minister Helen McEntee told a barristers conference "there was no good reason fee restoration had not yet taken place." Barrister Lorcan Connolly from Ennis says the situation is placing the sustainability of the entire criminal justice at risk. According to the Bar Council of Ireland, two-thirds of Criminal Barristers will leave the profession within their first six years. The Council also claims that before barristers received a 10% restoration in budget 2024, their pay was 40% below 2002 levels in real terms. Barrister Amy Nix from Quin is now in her fifth year of the profession, says parity is urgently needed to ensure skilled, competent and sensitive professionals are serving in the courtrooms of Clare long into the future. It remains to be seen if Clare's Criminal Barristers will get the justice they're searching for, but for now the ball is firmly in the government's court.

In this episode, Niall delves into whether the EU Migration Pact benefits Ireland. The legislation recently passed in the Dáil by a narrow margin, with 79 TDs voting in favor and 72 against. The government argues that the pact will enhance Ireland's asylum system, but opposition TDs have raised concerns about potential erosion of sovereignty and the risk of financial penalties from the EU.Niall explores the perspectives surrounding the pact, referencing debates and statements from key figures, including Independent Ireland and TD Mattie McGrath, who expressed significant reservations. Justice Minister Helen McEntee supports the pact, highlighting its potential for faster application processing, stronger border security, and quicker returns for those without valid claims.Niall opens up the lines to callers, who share their views on whether the EU Migration Pact is beneficial for Ireland. Some callers believe the pact is advantageous, providing a framework for faster asylum processing and enhancing border security. They argue that collaboration with other EU countries is essential for effectively managing migration and ensuring that those in genuine need of protection receive it swiftly, while those without valid claims are returned promptly.Other callers oppose the pact, viewing it as a threat to Ireland's sovereignty, handing over control of immigration policy to Brussels. They are concerned about the financial implications and the potential strain on already limited resources. They argue that the pact could lead to increased immigration without adequate vetting and undermine Ireland's ability to make independent decisions based on its unique needs.Niall wraps up by summarizing the varied viewpoints, reflecting on the balance between maintaining national control and cooperating within the EU framework.

Tús curtha le cás inmheánach maidir le saighdiúir singil. The Defense Forces of Ireland have begun an internal case regarding a soldier who pleaded guilty to brutally assaulting a woman who was left unconscious and speechless as a result. Tá tús curtha ag Óglaigh na hÉireann le cás inmheánach maidir le saighdiúir a phléadáil ciontach in ionsaí brúidiúil a dhéanamh ar bhean a fágadh gan aithne gan urlabhra dá bharr. In a court in Limerick yesterday, Single Soldier Cathal Crotty, aged 22, was given a three-year suspended prison sentence for the attack. I gcúirt i Luimneach inné, gearradh trí bliana príosúin ar fionraí ar an Saighdiúir Singil Cathal Crotty, 22 bliain d'aois, faoin ionsaí. In a statement, the Defense Forces declared that the internal case could not be started or that the civil case in court was over. I ráiteas, dhearbhaigh Óglaigh na hÉireann nár féadadh tús a chur leis an gcás inmheánach nó go raibh an cás sibhialta sa chúirt thart. The statement said that the soldier's Commanding Officer now had "various options" according to the Defense Forces Regulations. Dúradh sa ráiteas go raibh "roghanna éagsúla" anois ag Oifigeach Ceannais an tsaighdiúra de réir Rialacháin Óglaigh na hÉireann. The statement praised the woman who was attacked by Cathal Crotty – Natasha O'Brien, aged 24 – for her courage and prayed for her. Moladh sa ráiteas an bhean ar ionsaigh Cathal Crotty í – Natasha O'Brien, 24 bliain d'aois – as a mhisniúla a bhí sí agus guíodh biseach uirthi. Natasha O'Brien said yesterday, however, that it was neither right nor fair to impose a suspended prison term on the soldier. Dúirt Natasha O'Brien inné, ámh, nach raibh sé ceart ná cóir téarma príosúin ar fionraí a ghearradh ar an saighdiúir. The court was told that Cathal Crotty, from Ardnacroise in Co Clare, attacked Natasha O'Brien on O'Connell Street in Limerick on 29 May 2022. Dúradh sa chúirt gur ionsaigh Cathal Crotty, as Ard na Croise i gCo an Chláir, Natasha O'Brien ar Shráid Uí Chonaill i Luimneach ar an 29 Bealtaine 2022. Cathal Crotty had spent the evening drinking and when he started shouting insults at people in the street Natasha O'Brien asked him to stop. Bhí an tráthóna caite ag Cathal Crotty ag ól agus nuair a chuaigh sé ag caitheamh maslaí le daoine ar an tsráid in ard a ghutha d'iarr Natasha O'Brien air éirí as. It was then that he attacked her and hit her at least six times. Ba ansin a d'ionsaigh sé í agus bhuail í sé huaire ar a laghad. When the Gardaí first arrested him he told them it was the woman who started the altercation but when he was shown video from security cameras which showed otherwise he pleaded guilty to the attack. Nuair a ghabh na Gardaí é ar an gcéad dul síos dúirt sé leo gurbh í an bhean a thosaigh an t-achrann ach nuair a taispeánadh físeán ó cheamaraí slándála dó a léirigh a mhalairt phléadáil sé ciontach san ionsaí. It was also said that the soldier was complaining about the attack on the social media Snapchat. Dúradh freisin go raibh an saighdiúir ag maíomh as an ionsaí ar an meán sóisialta Snapchat. The Director of Public Prosecutions has four weeks to appeal against the leniency of the sentence but no announcement has yet been made. Tá ceithre seachtaine ag an Stiúrthóir Ionchúiseamh Poiblí le achomharc a dhéanamh in aghaidh bhoige na pianbhreithe ach níl aon fhógra déanta faoi sin fós. Justice Minister Helen McEntee praised Natasha O'Brien for speaking openly and bravely about the vicious attack on her. A Clare TD has accused the Government of taking an "all or nothing" approach to immigration law in Ireland. The Cabinet sub-committee on migration is meeting today where updates are being heard on efforts to expedite the processing of asylum seeker applications. Coming in a week when the Government has received much backlash for its handling of immigration, today's meeting is discussing plans to implement a more efficient deportation system for people whose asylum applications are rejected. The Cabinet sub-committee which deals with migration is also addressing other means of easing the perceived immigration crisis such as finding more accommodation for international protection applicants currently residing here. Despite reports that the meeting would include discussion on changes to welfare payments for those fleeing the war in Ukraine, this isn't expected to be on the agenda. The meeting comes one day after the Rural Independents called for a debate on the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. Scariff Independent Deputy Michael McNamara believes the Government is conflating the laws within the pact rather than acknowledging that they can be voted on separately. It's been reported that last night's meeting of the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party heard Justice Minister Helen McEntee's performance has been "disastrous". There were also calls for her to appear before the next Fianna Fáil party meeting. Fianna Fáil Junior Minister Jack Chambers however claims the party has full confidence in the Justice Minister. Amid an ongoing rift between the Irish and UK governments on asylum seekers entering this country from over the border, the Tanaiste has told the Northern Ireland secretary that Gardaí will not be sent to police the border. Speaking in the House of Lords last night, former DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds says he doesn't want the North to be a "dumping ground" for returned asylum seekers.

Cruinniú idir McEntee agus Cleverley curtha ar athlá. A planned meeting between Justice Minister Helen McEntee and British Home Affairs Secretary James Cleverly has been postponed. Tá cruinniú a bhí beartaithe idir an tAire Dlí agus Cirt Helen McEntee agus Rúnaí Gnóthaí Baile na Breataine James Cleverly curtha ar athlá. The two were to discuss the controversy about asylum seekers coming to Ireland from Britain but it is said that James Cleverly is busy with other affairs today. Bhí an bheirt leis an gconspóid faoi iarrthóirí tearmainn ag teacht go hÉirinn ón mBreatain a phlé ach deirtear go bhfuil James Cleverly gafa ag gnóthaí eile inniu. The Department of Justice has confirmed that the two will discuss the matter again soon. Tá sé dearbhaithe ag an an Roinn Dlí agus Cirt go bpléifidh an bheirt an scéal arís go luath. The story relates to the concern of the Irish Government that more immigrants have been coming into the State from Northern Ireland for some time because they fear that they will be deported from the United Kingdom. Baineann an scéal leis an imní atá ar Rialtas na hÉireann go bhfuil níos mó inimirceach ag teacht isteach sa Stát ó Thuaisceart Éireann le tamall mar go bhfuil faitíos orthu go ndíbreofar as an Ríocht Aontaithe iad. Legislation was passed in Britain last week under which asylum seekers can be deported from the country and sent to Rwanda in eastern Africa. Ritheadh reachtaíocht sa Bhreatain an tseachtain seo caite faoinar féidir iarrthóirí tearmainn a dhíbirt as an tír agus a gcur go Ruanda in oirthear na hAfraice. The aim of the legislation is to prevent migrants from arriving in Britain in small boats from France. Is é is aidhm don reachtaíocht imircigh a chur ó theacht chun na Breataine i mbáid bheaga ón bhFrainc. Minister McEntee revealed last week that there had been an increase of over 80% in the number of migrants coming into the State from Northern Ireland and the British Prime Minister claimed that this showed that the new legislation although it had not yet been implemented. Thug an tAire McEntee le fios an tseachtain seo caite go raibh ardú os cionn 80 faoin gcéad tagtha ar an líon imirceach a bhí ag teacht isteach sa Stát ó Thuaisceart Éireann agus mhaigh Príomh-Aire na Breataine gur léirigh sé sin go raibh rath cheana féin ar an reachtaíocht nua cé nach raibh sé curtha i bhfeidhm fós. In light of this crime in British immigration policy, the Irish Government is considering introducing legislation that would allow asylum seekers who have landed in Britain to be sent back there. I bhfianaise an choir seo i bpolasaí inimirce na Breataine, tá Rialtas na hÉireann ag breathnú ar reachtaíocht a thabhairt isteach faoina gceadófaí iarrthóirí tearmainn a tháinig i dtír sa Bhreatain a chur ar ais ann. Yesterday, Taoiseach Simon Harris said that Ireland would not provide a loophole for other countries struggling with the issue of immigration. Inné, dúirt an Taoiseach Simon Harris nach gcuirfeadh Éire bealach éalaithe ar fáil do thíortha eile atá ag streachailt le ceist na hinimirce. It is understood that Helen McEntee and James Cleverly are to discuss the Common Travel Area between Ireland and the United Kingdom with a view to "strengthening" it. Tuigtear go bhfuil Helen McEntee agus James Cleverly chun an Comhlimistéár Taistil idir Éire agus an Ríocht Aontaithe a phlé le súil é a "neartú". According to that agreement, citizens of Ireland and the United Kingdom are allowed to travel without restriction between the two countries. De réir an chomhaontaithe sin, tá cead ag saoránaigh na hÉireann agus na Ríochta Aontaithe taisteal gan srian idir an dá thír. RTÉ News and Current Affairs Nuacht agus Cúrsaí Reatha RTÉ

There are debates and disagreements between us, sometimes. Bíonn díospóireachtaí eadarainn agus easaontas, uaireanta. But respect is always shown. Ach léirítear meas i gcónaí. We place a high value on respect in this country; it is particularly valued by politicians. Tá luach ard againn ar mheas sa tír seo; tá luach ar leith ag polaiteoirí air. But intimidation of elected representatives will damage that relationship between representatives and their communities. Ach déanfaidh imeaglú ar ionadaithe tofa dochar don chaidreamh sin idir ionadaithe agus a bpobail. And democracy will be damaged as a result." Agus déanfar dochar don daonlathas dá bharr." The Taoiseach, Simon Harris, indicated earlier today that he feels "uneasy" about the incident in front of Roderic O'Gorman's house yesterday. Thug an Taoiseach, Simon Harris, le fios níos luaithe inniu go mbraitheann sé "míshuaimneach" faoin eachtra os comhair theach Roderic O'Gorman inné. He said it was a frightening incident, one that would demoralize an elected representative. Dúirt sé gur eachtra scanrúil a bhí ann, a chuirfeadh drochmhisneach ar ionadaí tofa. Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she had spoken to the Garda Commissioner about the "appalling" incident. Dúirt an tAire Dlí agus Cirt, Helen McEntee, gur labhair sí le Coimisinéir na nGardaí faoin eachtra "uafásach". In a statement on social media, she said the minister's "privacy and property rights" had been violated, "in a way that would shock anyone." I ráiteas ar na meáin shóisialta, dúirt sí go ndearnadh "sárú ar chearta príobháideachais agus maoine" an aire, "ar shlí a gcuirfeadh samhnas ar dhuine."

A Clare Independent TD claims the Governments new proposals to ease pressure on the immigration system will not tackle the root of the problem. Cabinet will discuss plans today that will favour the use of state reception centres to house International Protection Applicants rather than relying on private providers. Justice Minister Helen McEntee will also propose that Ireland opts into the new EU Migration Pact that would commit to enhance border screening and a legally binding time frame for application decisions. Scariff Deputy Michael McNamara has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the Government has a track record of failing to enforce its own legislation.

The Chief Medical Officer has requested a Health Impact Assessment be carried out on proposed legislation which extends opening hours of pubs and nightclubs. Professor Breda Smyth has written to the Justice Minister Helen McEntee, urging her to give consideration to carrying out the assessment. It comes weeks after the Road Safety Authority expressed concerns the passage of the Sale of Alcohol Bill would lead to an increase in road deaths. The Bill would extend the opening hours of late bars to 2:30am, and nightclubs to 6am. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Maurice Walsh, Owner of Durty Nellys in Bunratty and Maedhbh Firmino da Silva Santos, Deputy Manager of Bushypark Addiction Treatment Centre. In this episode, Niall explores the question of whether Ireland should opt into the EU Migration Pact. The proposed pact allows member states the option of paying a monetary contribution to the EU rather than accepting migrants. Justice Minister Helen McEntee seeks government approval for Ireland's participation, emphasizing the potential benefits of more effective processing of applications and enhanced security measures. Some callers advocate for Ireland to sign up to the EU Migration Pact, viewing it as a proactive step towards addressing migration challenges collectively at the European level. They highlight the structured framework it offers for managing migration and the potential for more efficient asylum application processing.Conversely, other callers vehemently oppose Ireland's participation in the pact, citing concerns about the strain it could place on resources and the potential impact on Irish citizens. They argue that Ireland should prioritize addressing the needs of its own citizens before taking on additional migration commitments, expressing worries about potential fines and the strain on resources. As the discussion unfolds, Niall navigates through these differing perspectives, weighing the potential benefits and drawbacks of Ireland signing up to the EU Migration Pact and considering its implications for the country's migration policies and resources.

It comes amid questions over the life of the coalition at Leinster House, after outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced his resignation. Simon Harris is leading the race to be named as the next leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach of the 33rd Dáil. The Minister for Further and Higher Education is yet to formally announce his leadership bid, but he has already far exceeded the necessary six nominations needed, with Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway among those already declaring support. Justice Minister Helen McEntee was among the early favourites to contest the bid, but has since ruled herself out of contention. Other potential challengers, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphries and the most likely rival Minister for Expenditure Pascal Donohoe have yet to through their hat into the ring. Concerns over the democratic nature of the Taoiseach selection process has triggered calls from all opposition parties for an immediate general election. Clare's Fine Gael Chair doesn't have a preferred candidate at this point, but former TD and Senator, Kilkee native Madeleine Taylor-Quinn, believes there's still stability within the coalition and that it should run its full course. Clare's Fianna Fáil TD, meanwhile, believes voters will be returning to the polling booth for a Christmas General Election. Cathal Crowe has paid tribute to outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar for his support for Garda Whistleblower Maurice McCabe, his handling of the Brexit Trade Agreement and for achieving economic growth. The Meelick Deputy insists there is still consensus and energy within the current government to deliver its programme, but says an election will be called in the final quarter of the year, for logistical reasons, rather than public discontent.
