Catification. It's a big buzz word in the cat world, but what does it really mean? Does it mean you need to live in a home filled with cat trees and shipping boxes in order to make your cats happy? Well, in fact it's quite the opposite. Kate Benjamin of HausPanther.com is here on our show to talk about bringing great cat items into your home that are also aesthetically pleasing to we humans. And it does not have expensive either. Join us as Kate shows us real examples in her how home that are inexpensive, functional for cats, while adding style, too. Enabling cats to climb and run, sleep and hide, replicating what they do when living outside in nature, gives cats the type of environment they need to thrive. A happy cat is less prone to unwanted cat behaviors, too, so this is a show you won't want to miss. EPISODE NOTES: Kate Benjamin – Hauspanther

Jackson Galaxy, aka "The Cat Daddy" is the Host & Executive Director of Animal Planet's long-running hit show My Cat From Hell. With over 20 years of experience as a cat behavior and wellness consultant, he's also a two-time New York times best-selling author. Jackson, a life-long musician, discovered his passion for cats and his unique ability to help them while on staff at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley for the better part of a decade. He worked with cats both in the shelter, as well as in the homes of guardians threatening to send their cats to the shelter. During this time, Jackson co-founded Spirit Essences, a line of holistic remedies for animals that remains a vital business to this day. Animal Planet premiered My Cat From Hell in 2011. An immediate hit, it has followed The Cat Daddy for eight top rated seasons as he makes house calls to pet guardians and their cats. Jackson's presence offers clients a deeper understanding of why cats act out, with insights and exercises from his unique "Cat Mojo" philosophy. Jackson's first book, Cat Daddy: What the World's Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love, and Coming Clean was a memoir published in 2012. His second book, co-authored with cat style expert Kate Benjamin, was Catification: Designing a Happy & Stylish Home for Your Cat (and You!). Upon its release in 2014, it reached #1 on the New York Times Animal Bestseller list. Jackson and Kate struck Bestseller gold again with Catify to Satisfy: Simple Solutions for Creating a Cat-Friendly Home, published in Fall 2015, inspiring and teaching cat guardians how to beautify their homes and address common cat behavior problems at the same time. His latest book, Total Cat Mojo, is due out for a holiday 2017 release. In the pet products world, a line of innovative cat items, from toys to carriers -- co-designed by Jackson -- is available through Petmate Pet Products. Called the Jackson Galaxy Collection, the line has received the Industry Recognition Award from Pet Business Magazine and the Editor's Choice Award from Cat Fancy, honors that ranked it among 2014's best products for cats. True to his goal of helping save the 4 million+ animals who die in shelters each year, Jackson is intensifying his work for animals through the Jackson Galaxy Foundation whose mission is to better the lives of at-risk animals by transforming the places they live and helping the people who care for them. Featured on 20/20, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show, EXTRA, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and more, Jackson's ability to connect with even the most troubled felines -- and the stressed-out humans living in their wake -- is awe-inspiring. In this episode, Jackson shares his one way ticket destination (Spain!), plus offers loads of tips for caring for our feline friends. Jackson is just one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Interview! Kate Benjamin, Designer, Blogger of Hauspanther, Part 2 “Not only does the design of the room at the shelter make it very functional and enjoyable, but it’s a showcase for what people can do when they get home.” In Part 2 of this two-part episode, Kate delves into how user-centered design theory can be applied to shelters, in order to make adoptable cats’ personalities shine and therefore be adopted faster. She has great praise for the new trend of cat cafes and open-concept shelters, which, if designed correctly, can encourage and inspire people to adopt cats and catify their own homes! Check out Kate’s blog at www.hauspanther.com.
Interview! Kate Benjamin, Designer, Blogger of Hauspanther, Part 1 “I’m not just writing about cool-looking stuff. I’m writing about stuff that’s going to make a difference in these cats’ lives.” Kate Benjamin has combined her professional knowledge of design and product development with her love of cats to fill a unique niche—she blogs about cat products designed with the cat consumer in mind! She’s been writing her blog, House Panther, for about ten years now, which eventually led to two New York Times best-sellers, Catification and Catify to Satisfy. Co-authored with Jackson Galaxy, the books blend his behavioral knowledge and her design perspective to instruct on how best to “catify” your home in ways that are both aesthetically pleasing and most suitable for your cat’s unique behavioral needs. Kate believes that if more cat products are designed with the needs of the cat in mind—a design concept called “user-centered design theory”—pesky behavioral problems like peeing outside the litterbox and scratching on furniture can be eliminated, leading to less declawing and less shelter surrenders. In Part 1 of this two-part episode, Kate explains how small pet stores and Etsy designers have influenced big-box pet stores to design more cat-centered products, which makes the products themselves more accessible to a pet owner on a budget. If you’re still concerned about price, though, not to worry: Kate has tips on DIY products for those of us with “a creative streak and a little bit of time.” Check out Kate’s blog at www.hauspanther.com.
Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of recovering former cathouse dwellers… in the new new media capitol of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Part 1 of 2 Order Cat Daddy: What the World's Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love, and Coming Clean by Jackson Galaxy, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! I hates cats. Maybe “hate” is a strong word. The problem is I’m allergic to them. I can think of many aspects of my life that would have turned out differently if it were not for the adult onset of cat allergies. Dinner parties I would not have had to leave early due to puffy, red eyes. Intimate social encounters uninterrupted by wheezing and breathlessness. You get the idea. So I can’t be around cats. And, I suppose, because of that, I do hate cats. JACKSON GALAXY audio excerpt: "When I first started, I wasn't the most comfortable walking into people's homes. We want the focus to be you and your cat, not the guy who might duct tape you to your chair. If you want somebody wearing a sweater vest, we probably weren't meant to work together." To me, then, all cats are sent from to us from Beelzebub. Which is why I instantly accepted the opportunity to interview rock guitarist and cat wrangler Jackson Galaxy on the occasion of his new Animal Planet mini-series, “My Cat From Hell.” The show debuts Saturday, May 7 at 9 p.m. I’d probably want to watch the show just for the spectacle of Galaxy himself – the shaved head, goatee and cat tattoos are quite a sight to behold, even before we meet the various felines on steroids. This should be fun.
