This week, Hindman, Kentucky writer, educator, vocalist and world champion mountain dulcimer Jedi Sarah Kate Morgan recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, a special performance by the 2024 Ozark Folk Center Mountain Dulcimer Contest winner Melinda McMillan of Martinsville, IN. “Born of Appalachian soil in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, Sarah Kate Morgan sings, plays, and writes like she's been in these hills since the dawn of time. She's had plenty of varied influences, beginning with hearing a classical music CD belonging to her family and going on to discover old time music through a dulcimer built by her grandfather. She began playing dulcimer at age 7. This proved to be a pivotal moment. At 18 years old, Sarah Kate placed 1st at the 2012 National Mountain Dulcimer Championships in Winfield, Kansas. She's gone on to build a unique personal style which honors mountain dulcimer giants such as Jean Ritchie while working across genres to build something new. Her dexterous approach to the instrument is one that only masterful artists can bring to the table; much like Bruce Molsky and the fiddle, having been a dedicated student of the dulcimer's complexities Morgan is able to distill them into a beautifully polished package. Well-known and widely respected as one of the leading experts of the mountain dulcimer, Sarah Kate is also a first-rate singer and songwriter. Her earthy and poetic lyrics embrace the highs and lows of southern Appalachian life while her voice does the same – moving between alto and soprano parts with ease. Her crystal-clear but rootsy vocal style combines the best of country, old time, bluegrass, and gospel influences who, like Morgan, foreground their cultural roots. All of this goes hand in hand to create a musical experience akin to a sonic baptism.” - https://www.sarahkatemorgan.com/bio-1 In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member Ramona Jones fiddling out a square dance on the traditional tune “Liberty,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles self-promoting Ozark folk artist and entrepreneur L.L. Broadfoot.

If anyone loves their wine, it's me! I don't drink liquor or beer, but I am a huge sucker for a Californian Cab Sav. I love the flavour and I love the warm feeling I get in my belly after a few sips. It makes me feel calm, peaceful, and relaxed. Even when I don't want a glass, I am easily swayed when others around me are enjoying a glass and I inevitably give in and succumb to a full-bodied, jammy glass of heaven.   I'm also post-menopausal and still suffer from hot flashes and weight gain. Alcohol is not my friend. However, we've all been so conditioned to drinking – just looking at old movies and tv shows. Booze is all around us. It makes it hard to cut it out when we feel so immersed. It has become a social lubricant and a reward at the end of a hard or challenging day. Sarah Kate, the ‘mocktologist' behind Some Good Clean Fun dishes up the details on the benefits of going alcohol free and some great substitutes. Spoiler Alert: remember when non-alcoholic wines used to suck? Not anymore! Sarah also brings up some interesting facts that we should all know about cocktails and calories. All of this is just to provide you with a new perspective on our alcohol habits. It's down to personal choice though. Some of us might want to cut back, some may want to cut it out all together and others are fine with things the way they are. I'm good with any and all decisions. I just want to provide you with all possible options. So tune in and let me know what you think!

You've likely seen the viral Signal for Help that women have been sharing on social media since the pandemic started but you probably don't know that this initiative was created by the Canadian Women's Foundation. Pamela Di Pinto is the manager of the Signal for Help and joins me today to share how it started, some very public success stories of it working, and more importantly how you should respond should someone send you this signal. Christmas with teens can be challenging for both sides. Parents are often left shellshocked as their sweet excitable child is replaced by a sullen anti-social teen, and teens are left wondering what all the fuss is about anyway. Aly Pain, What She Said's expert on the parent/teen dynamic is here today with some tips for getting through this year's holiday with comfort, and joy. Anne Brodie has heaps of new entertainment including South Korea's stunning espionage thriller Hunt, the emotionally charged The Eternal Daughter starring the amazing Tilda Swinton playing a dual role as mother and daughter, the wait is finally over Three Pines on Amazon Prime, and the very steamy, super hot Lady Chatterley's Love on Netflix that is going to give the wedding scene on The Highlander a run for it's money. Layoffs are becoming headlines all too frequently right now and it can cause anxiety for those that fear they may be next. Natalie Romero knows how you're feeling all too well, after being laid off this summer from Shopify. Natalie joins me to share her best tips for getting through a lay off in the best shape possible. If you're sober curious or have given up drinking entirely, the holidays can be challenging. Sarah Kate from somegoodcleanfun.com stops by with some tips on everything from what to drink, to preparing mentally, to being the only sober person in the room. This interview is great fun for everyone, whether you drink or not, if only because it offers perspective of the other side, and that's important when we gather to celebrate. Finally, where you spend your money this holiday season matters. Every time you spend money, you're casting a vote for the kind of world you want to live in. Erin Brillon from Totem Design House is here to share ways to ensure your dollar helps instead of hurts, especially when it comes to purchasing indigenous made items. Meridian Credit Union is back baby for a four part series on finances during different stages of women's life. We kick things off today with Kerri Anderson, Senior Practice Management Coach with Meridian Credit Union and it's all about retirement, and we're asking the question, is Freedom 55 still a thing? Who's up for some Good Clean Fun? Sarah Kate is a former wine-loving mom of two on a mission to help women rethink drinking and overcome the normalization of alcohol everywhere by inspiring them to find the fun in life, sans alcohol. Anne Brodie's regular Saturday Night at the Movies is a little bit longer this week simply because there is so much new in entertainment we had to! We chat about Eternal Spring, Canada's submission for the 2023 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, A Jazzman's Blues on Netflix, the much anticipated Blonde also on Netflix about Norma Jean Baker AKA Marilyn Monroe, a documentary on Apple TV about class act Sidney Poitier and finally a stunning series on TVO called Great Lakes Untamed. Lindsay Sealey, author of Made for More is back for the second in a series about Gen Z women and girls and we chat about the not good enough epidemic and how we can help our young women fight back against it. If you are drawn to horror when in comes to entertainment, either in documentaries, films, or books you're not alone. Women are weirdly obsessed with horror. Author Ainslie Hogarth and I break that down plus we talk about her latest book, Motherthing, a darkly funny domestic horror novel about a woman who must take drastic measures to save her husband and herself from the vengeful ghost of her mother-in-law. Yes, it's fiction. Finally, Anne Brodie is back with a interview with the incredible Tyler Perry who wrote and directed TIFF hit and Netflix release, A Jazzman's Blue which follows an investigation into an unsolved murder unveiling a story full of forbidden love, deceit and a secret. When the Script Hits the Fan: Why Archers fans stop listening (and why they can't completely keep away)Sarah Kate MerryAccording to the BBC Archers website, ‘Listeners to The Archers are loyal fans but take no prisoners' (BBC, 2016). But are fans of The Archers always loyal in their listening? This chapter presents stories of Archers fans who stopped listening, for various lengths of time, but still considered themselves to be fans of the show. ‘I listen so that you don't have to'; ‘Well, I won't be listening for a while – again!'; ‘I have only listened once since they murdered Nigel.'. These comments come from one online Archers fan community, and are not uncommon among those who continue to have an interest in Ambridge, despite choosing not to listen regularly. The assumption regarding people who identify as fans of serialised media is that they watch or listen to all of the episodes. This chapter considers the phenomenon of non-consuming fans of The Archers, and asks: If someone doesn't listen, can they be called a fan? Why do Archers fans stop listening? and Why do they start again (or not)?Dr Sarah Kate Merry is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Postdigital Cultures at Coventry University. Her PhD is in the field of Information Studies, and her research is primarily concerned with the impact of the internet on friendship and the nature of community, including the value of non-participatory membership of online communities. Sarah was exposed to The Archers at a distressingly young age and has finally accepted that she will never fully break free from her indoctrination.

I'm so excited to share this episode with you where I talk with one of my favorite people, Sarah Kate Hampton. Sarah Kate is one of the most genuine people I know. We met at General Assembly and have stayed close ever since — through jobs, layoffs, new adventures, stand-up comedy, all of it. Sarah Kate's a FORCE in this world — she's always ready to echo back and underline the importance of things and she's always ready to go all the way deep. Sarah Kate spent 6 years in k12 education first teaching 3rd grade while earning her masters in counseling and then as a high school counselor in rural Georgia. She needed a bit of a switch because the pressure of her job was taking an emotional toll. In between frantically counting credits for failing seniors, writing recommendation letters, and visiting college campuses, she researched UX. By the end of the 17/18 school year she took a leap of faith and submitted her resignation. There have been a lot of changes over the past couple years, and she continues to grow and evolve in her career as a Senior UX Researcher. ENERGY IN ACTION - EPISODE 040 Silver Linings with Sarah Kate Sarah Kate Frey is a mitochondrial disease patient who is always looking on the bright side, seeking silver linings in the darkest experiences. She is the author of Alice Eloise’s Silver Linings: The Story of a Silly Service Dog and is in the process of writing a second book about her friend and service dog, a doodle named Alice Eloise. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How are you connected to the mito world? Like a lot of patients, my path to a mitochondrial disease diagnosis was not a straight line. At about 12 years old, I came home from horseback riding camp really sick with a high fever and a staph infection in my throat that had me sick for months. I landed in the ER numerous times in a year for extreme dehydration and high inflammation markers. The following year in dance class, I sprained my ankle. Within the week, I received a Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) diagnosis. Not long after, I had extreme GI symptoms and saw a gastric motility doctor who did gastric emptying studies and further testing. I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis and then later with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). What led to a mitochondrial disease diagnosis was tying everything together. Can you tell us about Alice Eloise and how you came to author children's books? I love dogs and wondered how a service dog could help me. My sweet doodle, Alice Eloise, and I are a self-trained service dog team. She's my silver lining through being sick, so silver linings has become a mission for me. I decided to write a book about a girl and her dog, about silver linings and looking on the bright side. When Alice Eloise came along and stole my heart, it was time to tell our story. And that's what we're doing. The first book is written through the puppy eyes of Alice Eloise and her perspective of becoming a service dog. The biggest lessons from the story are no matter what you're going through, look for silver linings, never give up and seek the beauty in the world. What will the second book be about? It's about a trip to the zoo with Alice Eloise, which started out as a scene in the first book. We ended the first book after her service dog test, so I decided to add to the story with another book. The premise of this book is about being someone else's silver lining, and knowing that some of the best silver linings in life are the people around us and our interactions with one another.
