These bridges, constructed before 1991, lack recent "vulnerability assessments" to gauge their risk of collapse from vessel collisions. The NTSB directed its recommendations to 30 bridge owners nationwide, including those managing notable structures like the Golden Gate Bridge in California, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District responded by affirming its compliance with regulations and noting a consultant was hired this year to assess the bridge's resilience to ship impacts. The NTSB clarified that its advice doesn't imply imminent danger but encourages owners to ensure risks align with standards set by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The bridges are classified as either "critical/essential" (like the Key Bridge) or "typical," based on their significance. The NTSB's push follows new findings from the Key Bridge investigation, where a cargo ship's power failure led to the bridge's collapse, killing six of eight workers. The agency noted that a proper risk assessment could have identified the Key Bridge's excessive vulnerability—nearly 30 times above...

Tampa Florida trial lawyer Steve Yerrid has done it all. He was a boxer in his youth and a fighter for justice in his career as a trial lawyer. Steve was the youngest member of the Tobacco “Dream Team,” which secured a $17 billion settlement from Big Tobacco and numerous changes in their business practices which have saved thousands of lives. Steve has many record setting jury verdicts. He has served as personal counsel to NY Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner. And he has given back to his community through his Yerrid Foundation. Steve has authored several books and has frequently spoken on the topic of what separates those would achieve greatness (i.e., those who have “it”) from everyone else. Join Rahul and Ben for their fascinating conversation with Steve as he shares aspects of his incredible career and things that have shaped his approach to trying cases and success in life. About Steve Yerridhttps://www.yerridlaw.com/attorneys/c-steven-yerrid/In a city like Tampa, Florida, a coastal metropolis steeped in history, the list of well-known names and larger-than-life personalities is rich and lengthy, but few names resonate with the same renown as Steve Yerrid.Yerrid, a trail-blazing trial lawyer for more than 45 years, has built a legacy that continues to evolve, fueled by a relentless desire to help as many people as possible, whether seeking and securing justice on their behalf in the courtroom or selflessly devoting his time and donating a substantial portion of his accumulated wealth to bettering the world around him. In an age where importance and social impact are measured by likes and subscribers, instead of hard work and good deeds, Steve remains a practitioner of the old ways, always leading by example and putting the needs of others first. Whether meeting each client of his firm personally or taking time to deliver much needed food to the area's most vulnerable and less fortunate, he is and has always been one-of-a-kind, a determined legal and social warrior the likes of which are a rarity in today's world.Yerrid has experienced a career of noteworthy achievements, including over 300 verdicts and settlements of $1 million or more for individuals and the families of those injured or killed by the wrongdoing of others. Among those was a jury verdict of $217 million, the largest medical malpractice award in Florida's history, and the nation's largest verdict in 2006. In 2009, he again obtained the country's largest verdict rendered in a wrongful death case that year, with a jury award of $330 million. When he was just 30 years old, Yerrid received international recognition in one of the world's largest maritime tragedies. In utilizing a rare “Act of God” defense, he was able to secure the complete exoneration of Captain John Lerro, the accused pilot in command of a large 608-foot bulk freighter which, during an unpredicted storm packing hurricane force winds, was blown off course and struck the mammoth Sunshine Skyway Bridge, collapsing its center span and tragically claiming 35 innocent lives. Not a decade has passed that Steve has not left an indelible mark. In 2010, confronted by one of the largest environmental catastrophes in history, then-Governor Charlie Crist appointed him as Special Counsel regarding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster and its aftermath. Yerrid gave his time, costs, and efforts for nearly a year to the people of Florida as a public service. As a result, The Florida Justice Association presented him with the Outstanding Pro Bono Award, a special recognition given only every several years. Yerrid also was retained by the City of Tampa to hold BP responsible for the economic damages it sustained as a result of that disaster. He successfully obtained a $27.5 million settlement in July 2015. It was the largest recovery paid to any municipality by British Petroleum. In the 1990's, as the youngest lawyer appointed by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to an 11-member “Dream Team” of private lawyers, Steve undertook a leading role in Florida's landmark lawsuit against the previously unbeaten cigarette industry. The case resulted in the biggest monetary settlement that had occurred in U.S. history, ultimately topping $17 billion. In addition, he and the Dream Team members succeeded in obtaining unprecedented advertising concessions that permanently prevented marketing aimed at children, eliminated cigarette billboards, vending machines, Joe Camel, the Marlboro Man, and established youth tobacco prevention programs across the United States. As a result of his success, tenacity and integrity, Steve has long been sought out to take on important and precedent-setting cases. He was honored to be appointed as Special Counsel to the Office of the Chief Judge (13th Judicial Circuit) and the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. In representing Florida's entire judiciary, he successfully argued before the Florida Supreme Court and protected state judges and staff from public disclosure of confidential records and internal communications within the court system. Yerrid is a lifetime member of the prestigious Inner Circle of Advocates, an “invitation only” organization whose membership consists of the top 100 trial lawyers in the United States. He is a past recipient of the Perry Nichols Award, bestowed by the Florida Justice Association (FJA) as its highest honor in recognition of a lifelong pursuit of justice, and in 2013, he received the Excalibur Award for exemplifying leadership and commitment at the highest level of Florida's civil justice system, an honor bestowed on only four Florida trial lawyers. In 2016, he was voted into the National Trial Lawyers Hall of Fame. Steve also is the recipient of several FJA Eagle Awards (Gold, Silver and Crystal), including recognition as the first donor to achieve the $1 million-dollar-level of giving to the FJA's educational efforts designed to protect and improve the American system of justice; currently serves as a Distinguished Fellow in the FJA; has been named Top Lawyer in the Nation by Lawyers USA; was selected by the National Law Journal as a top ten litigator; honored by the American Board of Trial Advocates a Diplomate as well as Trial Lawyer of the Year (Tampa Bay); and the recipient of numerous other honors and recognitions through his career too numerous to specifically reference. He has been continuously listed in Best Lawyer in America over the last five decades. Steve Yerrid, a Georgetown University Law Center graduate has long been one of the country's top catastrophic injury and wrongful death trial attorneys, having secured over 300 verdicts and settlements of $1 million or more. This year the jury awarded $15 million in damages to each parent for mental anguish, plus burial expenses of $7,502.00. The verdict total was $30,007,502.00. In 2006 - A $217 million verdict was obtained for the client and his family. It is the largest medical malpractice verdict in Florida's history, and the top national jury verdict of its kind in 2006. 1990s, Mr. Yerrid was selected by the late Gov. Lawton Chiles as the youngest member of the 11-member “Dream Team” of private trial lawyers. He took a leading role in Florida's landmark lawsuit against the previously unbeaten cigarette industry. The case resulted in the biggest monetary settlement in the nation's history at the time, ultimately topping $17 billion. The mantra that everyone should have a shot at happiness, success and living the American dream led to the formation of The Yerrid Foundation almost four decades ago. The self-funded family foundation has made significant donations to more than 700 causes and charitable organizations locally, nationally, and even internationally, with an emphasis on children's issues, pediatric cancer research, the welfare of veterans, and domestic abuse victims.
IN THIS EPISODE:FICTION: The short horror story “Come and Play” by Pablo DickensNON-FICTION: In May, 2017, another 7,000 unmarked graves were found on the campus of Mississippi Medical Center. But this gruesome discovery is only the beginning of the dark and twisted history of how the bodies got there. (The Land of 10,000 Unmarked Graves) *** Dark Watchers… they are mentioned in a number of ancient legends and are well-known in several US states. But who or what are they, and where do they come from? (Mysterious Dark Watchers) *** There is an ancient, superstitious and almost universal belief that certain people possess the supernatural power to cause disaster, illness, calamity and even death. They have an ability to do it with a gaze or stare – what we've come to know as the evil eye. (The Curse of The Evil Eye) *** Mysterious, loud booming noises have been heard all over the country without explanation. But now it has become even creepier, as some men in black have been poking around asking questions and interviewing witnesses. (Men In Black and Unexplained Booms) *** A convicted murderer and suspected serial killer lurks in the frames of the horror classic, The Exorcist. (The Real Life Killer Who Appeared In The Exorcist) *** A mysterious old man shows up at the scene of two auto accidents – twenty years apart! (My Guardian Angel) *** The older citizens in Durango, Mexico tell of a frightening entity known as the La Ilorona. (La Ilorona) *** A woman tells of seeing a dead relative on her way out to do her weekly grocery shopping. (Doppelganger, Ghost, or Imagination?) *** Drenched in sun and perched above the glistening water of Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge doesn't look haunted. However, appearances can be deceiving. (Tampa's Haunted Sunshine Skyway Bridge) *** The rapid decline of traffic on Route 66 sounded the death knell for hundreds of businesses – including Diamonds Restaurant. But that hasn't stopped the undead from continuing to frequent the place. (Ghosts of Diamonds Restaurant) *** Die without being married and you could be doomed to haunt the world forever – at least according to an ancient Chinese custom. And thus, “ghost weddings” became a reality. (Ghost Marriage) *** What was intended as a romantic getaway under the stars turned into a frightful getaway from a horrible sound. (Unnatural Sound On Mt. Saint Helens) *** A string of murders in Wineville, California caused the town to change its name – and inspired an Angelina Jolie movie. Florida deputies once pulled over a weaving driver. His excuse was he'd been drinking and then was this squirrel in his shirt that kept biting him. Oh, the things you'll see on Florida's roadways. Or won't… In this very special 1980's themed first-time-in-Florida episode, we'll find out how seatbelts help prevent blood stains, we'll see what happens when you drive underwater, and we'll have a special second safety segment covering Florida road etiquette. We're going to cover some strange and awful stuff here, but I won't pick on Florida. I wish I lived there myself. And if I say “Florida man arrested for DUI after mistaking bank drive through for Taco Bell” or “Florida man worried about vampires burns down his house” – remember, Florida holds a monopoly on bizarre behaviour, but it doesn't hold the trademark.Celebrity guests include Florida Man, Michael Jackson and God himself. This week Danielle discusses the mysterious death of socialite and avid horsewoman, Joan Robinson Hill. Joan was always known to be healthy and lively until her death drastically worsened over a short period of time. Her husband who also happened to be a doctor never showed any signs of concern which would later get seen as one way he acted oddly during this time. How did this newlywed with a young child who was known to be vivacious suddenly pass away at the age of 38? Later, In this week's episode, Sandra talks about the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay Florida. The original bridge was built in 1954 and opened on September 6th. It was made to reach St.Petersburg from terra Ceia and vice versa. Today it is known for having two separate tragedies in 1980, both including boats. It also has an unfortunate history of having a high number of suicides. The only way across the bridge today is via car, and there have been reports of seeing a mysterious blonde-haired woman on the bridge. Passengers who have stopped to help her have seen her disappear. It is unclear why she is on the bridge, considering the bridge's history it is no surprise that the Skyway Bridge is known for being haunted. We continue our telling of the harrowing story of the collapse of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. We follow Captain John Lerro and his journey through the squall to the fatal blow which destroyed the bridge. Lerro's attorney, Steve Yerrid helps us fill in the pieces of what really happened that day. And we also learn about sole survivor, Wesley McEntire, and how his life was affected by the collapse.
Many are familiar with the collapse of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, but can you say you know the whole story? On May 9, 1980 thirty five people descended to their deaths when the ship MV Summit Venture fatally collided with the Tampa bridge. Spectrum's own Mason Miller takes you on a journey through the past, to uncover the many overlooked details of the collapse, and learn more about the family and friends of those left behind….and especially about the man many blame for the fatal incident.
This week The Florida Spectacular welcomes Bill DeYoung, a St. Petersburg native, veteran journalist, and author of "Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay's Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought it Down." Bill and Cathy talk about the Skyway Bridge disaster of 1980, the (untrue and harmful) rumors about Captain Lerro's role in the disaster and, most notably, his play, "Mayday: Captain Lerro and the Skyway Bridge", which opens in St. Petersburg Feb. 10More about Bill:In addition to "Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay's Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought it Down" Bill's also written books about Florida music, including "Phil Gernhard Record Man""I Need to Know: The Lost Music Interviews", "Vintage St. Pete: The Golden Age of Tourism and More" and "Vintage St. Pete Volume II: Legends, Locations, Lifestyles". He is senior writer and editor at the St. Pete Catalyst.About the play:"Mayday: Captain Lerro and the Skyway Bridge" is a one-person play centered around John Lerro, the harbor pilot at the helm of the freighter that knocked down the Sunshine Skyway Bridge during a freak storm in 1980. Lerro relates the story of his life, up to and including the "day he checked into hell," and describes – in harrowing detail – the unhappy years that followed. Much of the dialogue was taken from Lerro's own words, in court testimony and media interviews.Links we mentioned:"Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay's Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought it Down"Off Central (For tickets to "Mayday" when available; the show opens Feb. 10)Want more Florida? Robert Raiola and Mike Betz are former Florida DOT divers who were in charge of inspecting thousands of water bridges over the span of their careers. Their job was to dive under every bridge and thoroughly inspect each piling for structural integrity below the waterline. On may 9th 1980 At 7:38 in the morning, a freighter hit the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay. A 1,400 feet section of the bridge collapsed, killing 35 people. My guests today, Bob & Mike were the first divers in the water that day to attempt to rescue and retrieve victims of what is known as one of the worst disasters in Florida’s history.
Part 3 of 3 episodes. On the morning of May 9, 1980, a sudden, violent storm rolled into the bay and a freighter, the Summit Venture, collided with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Six cars, a pickup truck, and a Greyhound passenger bus full of Tuskeegee, Alabama students, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and a baby, fell from the broken bridge and plunged 150 feet into the water to their deaths. Just one person out of the 36 who went into the water that day survived. This is the story of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse that resulted after being struck by the freighter Summit Venture on 9 May 1980. The tale is far more complicated than local harbor pilot, John Lerro, deciding to captain a huge ship underneath the bridge during a horrific and unexpected squall on the final push. The SV was 606 feet long, the channel opening under the bridge was 400 feet, the radar stopped working and visibility was zero. Lerro had just moments to decide what to do. Given how close the Summit Venture was to the Skyway, should he try to stop the ship, turn it around, or stay the course and pilot the ship under the bridge just before morning rush hour? So much had already gone wrong Lerro could not have anticipated. But after weighing all the options, Lerro made the decision to "aim for the hole" underneath the Skyway. By the time Lerro could see the bridge, it was too late. The hurricane-like gusts that morning had blown the huge ship far off course and the Summit Venture was headed directly into one of the main support piers that held up the highest parts of roadway. The southbound span was destroyed as it fell straight down, section by section. Eight vehicles, including a Greyhound passenger bus, fell 150 feet into the churning waters of Tampa Bay as Lerro frantically called the Coast Guard for assistance. The elements of the accident, the people involved, and the aftermath comprise the inaugural episode of Tampa Bay Terrible. Please listen as Shannon McMahon tells her son, Malcolm, about this terrible event.

The Sunshine Skyway bridge was a well-known piece of Florida architecture, carrying vehicles back and forth across Tampa Bay and allowing ships to pass underneath in the bay's busy shipping channel. But on May 9, 1980, a sudden and ferocious storm brought all three - the ships, the bridge, and the cars - to a tragic shared end.
Barely in his 40’s at the time, Steve Yerrid was the youngest member of the so-called “Dream Team” of Florida lawyers who took on Big Tobacco in the mid-1990’s - and won. The idea to add racketeering and conspiracy charges – tripling the potential damages that could be awarded – contributed to the tobacco companies’ $13 billion settlement to reimburse Florida’s state Medicaid costs for ailing smokers. Steve is still fighting Big Tobacco, helping to win a $15 million jury verdict against RJ Reynolds in 2017. But there is so much more to Tampa’s Steve Yerrid than one single case. They include his long-shot “Act of God” defense that exonerated the harbor pilot whose ship struck the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, leading to its deadly collapse. In all, he’s won more than 250 verdicts and settlements of $1 million or more: several, record-setting. Along the way, he’s been honored with the Florida Justice Association’s Perry Nichols Award, our highest honor. He’s a member of the prestigious Inner Circle of Advocates, an invitation-only group of the best 100 trial lawyers in America. He’s on the Board of Governors of the Fellows of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers. And he is a key contributor to the Endowment Fund of the FJA Research & Education Foundation, our charitable entity. Steve Yerrid sat down with Florida Justice Association Radio host Harvey Bennett in February 2018 and revealed his one key to courtroom success, words of wisdoms that have proven true along the way, and his advice to other lawyers on how to avoid letting trial law get the better of you. Sometimes whimsical, often inspirational, but always with practical advice and lessons, Titans of Trial shares the personal stories of the men and women who’ve made a demonstrated difference to the practice of trial law in Florida.
*Volume Warning*: This one is a doozy boys and girls. Dan and Tony check out the House Movement Massive Skyway Party. Well in excess of 1,000 people attending a free party on an island off the interstate right before the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Dan & Tony haul about 100 bottled waters down to the party, where the nearest convenience store is at least 30 minutes away, and trade them for some cool stories. They make a lot of new friends and hear about all sorts of crazy shit. Since we were recording live at a rave the volume is a bit up and down, so be careful and don't turn your sound up too high. Besides that this episode is a real treat. Big ups to The House Movement for putting on a great show for everybody. We can't say thank you enough. This radio piece, created by independent producer Rich Halten, is the story of a man who threw himself off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay in Florida....
“Splash” on PRX Who did What to WHOM!? My memory’s not what it once was. But hearing a certain name made an instant connection with the past. A prominent Tampa lawyer was murdered by his ex-wife. She snapped, drove to his new home and shot him six times. I got a cold chill when the victim was ID’d. I’d known him as a neighborhood kid decades ago when we played kid games. But the part of the story I couldn’t shake was what his ex did after emptying her revolver. She drove to the nearby Sunshine Skyway Bridge and jumped nearly 200 feet into Tampa Bay. The cosmic joke was on her. Instead of evading an ugly trial and lifetime lockup, she survived. Now I’d heard about plenty of jumpers who’d used the Sunshine Skyway to exit life. But somebody who actually lived to tell about it? I’m no fan of gruesome movies or TV, but morbid curiosity took over. What thoughts do bridge jumpers have a second after their feet leave the wall? How does it feel to hit choppy water at 75 miles per hour? How do their broken bodies stay afloat until rescued? And would this make a good radio story? Thank goodness for a certain four-letter word. Luck. I had none of it while trying to set up an interview with the ex-wife in her new home at the state pen. We got a little correspondence going, but it ended abruptly when a letter bounced back “Return to Sender.” Either she decided not to participate or the prison system wouldn’t allow it. Hanns Jones I was hitting dead ends trying to contact a few other surviving jumpers. Then luck struck. A survivor named Hanns Jones actually returned my email. After a few phone calls convincing him I wasn’t out to exploit his story for ill-gotten gain (I explained it was for public radio), he agreed to an interview. Magic. I couldn’t have asked for a better storyteller. Or a jumper so willing to volunteer all the painful and emotional details of his ordeal. Or a voice that could paint the picture like a colorful character in a movie. Driving away from that first interview with Hanns, holding the tiny speaker on my flash recorder up to my ear, the cartoon light bulb flashed on overhead: “Holy crap! This guy can carry the piece. Who needs a detached narrator when you’ve got the glue to hold it all together, a strong story arc and a commanding voice, all in one.” All I had to do was take a zillion bits and pieces, assemble them into a coherent story, and orchestrate with other sonic ingredients. After I found Hanns (a gift from the radio gods?) everything fell into place like few things in life ever do. Even when I hit the occasional speed bump, a solution presented itself that made the piece better. You’ve heard that luck is some combination of preparation, perspiration and inspiration. I agree — up to a point. But there’s another kind that you can’t account for or prep for. The kind that comes out of the blue like lightning. You don’t need it to make great radio. But it’s a game changer when it happens. What’s with all the sound design you ask? Ever notice that the soundtracks of most film and video docs are more complex and better crafted than radio documentaries? Why be self-limiting, unless the piece is pure journalism? Why not use every tool available, including music, atmospheres and SFX? Strong sound design was always part of my plan, but it also served a practical purpose. I needed it to cover wind-damaged portions of Hanns’ dialogue (micro editing also helped). I wasn’t prepared for the 15-25 mph gusts off the bay in our first interview. My bad. We recorded in calmer locations after that. I might’ve gone lighter on sound design if the piece had traditional narration. But Hanns’ unflinching willingness to tell his personal story made it a good fit. Really, a perfect fit to elevate “Splash” to impressionist...
