No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 12 are the four teams left in contention for a trip to Annapolis, Maryland, for Stagg Bowl XLIX. Mary Hardin-Baylor took down Bethel with a fourth-quarter surge, while Mount Union eased past Delaware Valley, North Central trounced Ithaca and Wartburg did the same to Aurora. The key story at Wartburg? Just the mere fact that Nile McLaughlin was in the lineup at quarterback for the Knights. For Mary Hardin-Baylor, it was KJ Miller's 65-yard touchdown catch and run. We'll hear him talk a little about that. We hear from North Central's Luke Lehnen and Mount Union's Braxton Plunk as well after they quarterbacked their teams to victory. 2022 Division III football playoff bracket Pat and Greg give out their game balls, one on offense and one on defense, and you can learn more about the status of the big postseason awards that are coming in the next week, plus find out which players were on Pat and Greg's Gagliardi Trophy ballot. This edition of the podcast is sponsored by the hosts of Stagg Bowl XLIX, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Division III football championship game on Dec. 16. Plus, the end of the season at Bethel and Delaware Valley also marks the end of careers for key players in this run. The end of the 2022 football season for the Royals leaves coach Steve Johnson feeling a little emotional, and Delaware Valley defensive back Blaine Netterman talks about having played with the Nobile brothers since sophomore year of high school, and the future of the Del Val program.  Plus, what's the difference between rebuilding and reloading? How do those elite teams remain at that level? Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. Beauty companies that fail to bring diverse employees into their teams, for executive-level to entry-level roles, aren't just at risk of failing on a moral front -- they're also leaving money on the table, according to Mented co-founders KJ Miller and Amanda Johnson. "Money talks. So maybe you don't understand why it's important that I have a lipstick that works for my skin tone, but you can understand that black women outspend their non-black counterparts by 80%," Miller said on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "The smart investors got it and they are now investors in a really successful brand, and the other investors didn't. And that's on them" Miller and Johnson graduated from the same 2014 class at Harvard Business School, and launched Mented in January 2017. Sales grew by roughly 400% in the following year, during which -- after pitching 80 VCs -- they raised a pre-seed investment of $1 million. In 2018, the company raised $3 million in further funding. In Johnson's view, "Diversity in beauty has always been 'a trend.' Sometimes it's really up, sometimes it's really down. It depends on what models are on the runway, what's chic in a season," she said. "But the reality is people of color have always been around." Regarding the killing of George Floyd and the protests that continue to sweep the country, Johnson acknowledged the gravity of the climate, especially as black founders and leaders. "We’re making it," she said. "The thing that continues to brighten the day and push us forward is obviously, our families and our passion for the thing we’re building, but also our customers. We have had some of the most heartfelt emails and social comments over the last couple of months and weeks, whether it was about Covid[-19] or about social injustice, encouraging us to keep going, to keep fighting, that our company matters, that what we're doing is important. Sometimes just that one message is the thing that can keep you going in what is an incredibly difficult day."

KJ and Amanda are the founders of Mented Cosmetics, one of the first cosmetics brands to prioritize women of color. After searching for a nude lipstick that worked for their complexion they set out to make the first nude lipstick for dark-skinned women. They watched a YouTube tutorial and started experimenting with their own formulations in Amanda’s apartment in Harlem. Shortly after they perfected their product and launched Mented’s first line of nude lipsticks in 2017, which remains their brand staple. They began fundraising and in that same year, Amanda and KJ became the 16th and 17th black women to raise a million dollars in funding. Since then they’ve raised additional capital and scaled their business into the millions. The key to their success was formulating an exceptional product that answered a pain point the majority of women of color have felt at one time or another. They bet big on organic channels and influencer partnerships. And most importantly, they always put their customers first, making them the priority after so many other beauty brands treated them like an afterthought.

Could your next BIG idea come from a conversation you have over a glass of wine? Who KNOWS?! Meet KJ Miller and Amanda Johnson, co-founders of the vegan, non toxic premium beauty line Mented Cosmetics. The two met when they were both students at Harvard Business School. One day - over a glass of wine - they bonded over a mutual problem of not being able to find the perfect lipstick shade. From there it was history!  They were able to go from ideation to execution and create a fully operating business venture. BUT check this!  The two recently raised $1 million in their first round of fundraising, making them the 15th and 16th African-American women ever to raise $1 million in venture capital, according to Forbes magazine. As data from investor Kathryn Finney's Project Diane shows, although black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., they receive only 0.2% of VC funding. What were their keys to success? These amazing dream drivers share just HOW they were able to do this and so much more. Prior to launching into entrepreneurship,  KJ was a management consultant for Deloitte’s retail practice and was a jewelry buyer for Sears. Amanda worked as head of business development for Barney's NY and was an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. I’m really excited for you all to hear the Mented Cosmetics story!
