How do we read the stories of the Qur'an and make them our stories? In the Qur'an, nothing is repeated in vain. The story of Banu Isrāʾīl appears again and again, and Prophet Mūsā (ʿalayhi al-salām) is the most frequently mentioned prophet. These accounts are not presented as a single, linear history. They repeat across different sūrahs, each time from a new angle, highlighting a different lesson for us to learn. This series explores the narratives of Banu Isrāʾīl in the Qur'an and what they reveal about our own condition today.

Isn't it time your heart connected to Divine? That is the real liberation. This video explores a powerful lesson from the story of Banu Israel: external liberation does not guarantee internal transformation. A people can escape tyranny and still carry its mindset. You can remove Pharaoh and still think like Egypt. The Qur'anic stories aren't just about them. They're about us. True liberation is in the heart. That's why the first command to the Prophet ﷺ was not to build a state, but to stand in prayer. Inner transformation came before external change. This is a reflection on materialism, imagination, power, and what real freedom actually requires.

Banu Israʾil asked Prophet Musa (ʿalayhi al-salam) to show them God in a material way. Even after all the miracles Allah showed them, it was not enough. What renders faith this weak? Their questioning was not simply curiosity. It was a form of rebellion. They wanted God to conform to what they wanted. But human beings can only understand what they sense, and our senses are limited. “What remains of faith if it is only about what you can touch, see, and feel? That would not be faith. It would be science.” Only faith in the ghayb gives us the tools to endure calamity, rebuild after destruction, and make sense of suffering. Faith based in the unseen gives us a vast analytical toolshed to live our lives with meaning and resilience, to sail through calamity and pick up our pieces after devastation. Rather than through our senses, we must look for Allah within our hearts through dhikr, the Qur'an, and love of the Prophet ﷺ.

In the story of Banū Isrāʾīl and the worship of the Golden Calf, the Qur'an exposes a deep psychological reality about the human soul. When Prophet Mūsā ʿalayhi al-salām went to meet his Lord and was honored with revelation, his people turned to a calf fashioned by the Sāmirī from gold. Allah reminds us that this calf could not speak, could not benefit or harm, and possessed no power. Yet it captivated them. Why? Because the calf represented something easy for the nafs to accept. It demanded nothing. It imposed no commands, no prohibitions, no sacrifice of ego. It did not confront their desires or hold them accountable. In reality, it was the embodiment of their own desires projected outward as a god. The Qur'anic story warns us that shirk is not primitive. Idolatry is psychological. It reappears whenever human beings shape religion according to their desires rather than submitting to revelation. When right and wrong become whatever we decide, the “calf” returns in new forms. The Qur'an reminds us that true freedom lies in servitude to Allah alone. Slavery to Allah liberates us from being enslaved by our desires.

The Qur'an tells us that the love of the ʿijl (the calf) seeped deeply into the hearts of Banū Isrāʾīl. It became a way of seeing the world, an attitude that reappeared again and again across generations. Prophet ʿĪsā ʿalayhi al-salām showed Banū Isrāʾīl tremendous signs. Yet even among his disciples, the same pattern resurfaced. They asked him: “Can your Lord send down to us a table spread from heaven?” He replied, “Fear Allah if you are truly believers.” But when the calf settles deep in the heart, miracles are never enough. They said they wanted reassurance so that their hearts would be at ease. The Qur'an shows us that the deeper problem was not lack of evidence, but a spiritual disease. The calf manifests as recalcitrance: questioning Allah's decree, interrogating revelation, and intellectualizing commands until obedience is pushed further and further away. True understanding does not come from intellect alone. Guidance settles in the heart. When the heart is purified through dhikr, worship, and spiritual cultivation, deeper understanding follows.

In the story of Banū Isrāʾīl, Allah reminds us how a people who were given food from heaven began to complain and longed instead for garlic, onions, and lentils. What was miraculous became ordinary to them. Their ingratitude reveals a deep truth about human psychology: when blessings become familiar, we begin to overlook them. Today many of us live with comforts greater than kings of the past, yet dissatisfaction persists. The Qur'an warns that entitlement erodes the heart and blinds us to Allah's favors. Shayṭān's mission is simple: to make human beings ungrateful. This reflection reminds us to guard our hearts with shukr, to recognize the miracles already in our lives, and to never look down upon the blessings Allah has given.

What hardens a heart even after witnessing miracles? This episode explores how Banū Isrāʾīl, despite receiving clear signs, fell into spiritual hardness from resisting truth. The Qur'an reminds us: hearts can become harder than stone while even stones humble themselves before Allah. Are we any different? In a world full of the miracles (life, death, resurrection, and renewal) heedlessness can still take root. Knowledge without humility, and religion without spiritual connection, can lead to indifference rather than transformation. True yaqīn is not found in information alone, but through dhikr, companionship, and living the Prophetic path.

Hersch Lauterpacht Memorial Lectures 2025: Diversity and Self-Determination in International Law: Continuing Conversations with Karen KnopWe will come together to celebrate the life and scholarship of our colleague and friend, Professor Karen Knop (1960-2022). Karen, until her untimely passing, was the Cecil A Wright Chair at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law. A long-time friend of the Lauterpacht Centre, Karen was to have delivered the Centre's 2025 Hersch Lauterpacht Memorial Lectures.Session III Private and Foreign Relations LawProfessor Anne Peters in conversation with Dr Roxana BanuChair: Professor Campbell McLachlanProfessor Peters's talk, 'Populism, Foreign Relations Law, and global order and justice', will discuss populist foreign relations law, which was Karen Knop's last project, at the university of Helsinki and as a Max Planck fellow. This talk will make the point that ongoing transformations of the concept of law itself, of legal procedures, and of legal substance cut across the ‘levels' of governance. And neither identitarian rhetoric, nor trade wars, nor border-fences will bring back an inter-state, Westphalian (or ‘Eastfalian') order. We are living in conditions of global law (and transnational) law. Populist heads of state both deploy and defy this law (concluding populist treaties or deals such as the German-Turkish refugee agreements; denouncing treaties such as ICSID or the Paris Agreement; using their war powers to escape domestic critique; raising tariffs to please their voter-base, and so on). At the same time, domestic, local and transnational actors (ranging from cities to courts to Indigenous peoples, or philanthro-capitalists) activate all kinds of law to resist populism. Such global lawfare destabilises world order but also has a transformative potential. New legal forms (especially informal agreements), new legal processes (such as public interest litigation before the ICJ) and new legal principles (such as One Health; Rectification/reparation; and the exposure of double standards) are responding to the big challenges for global order and justice: the cultural, the social, and the ecological challenge. Dr Banu's talk, 'Foreign Affairs, Self-Determination and Private International Law', begins with the point that foreign affairs questions are often thought to lie at the very edge of private international law, perhaps in the leftover corners of the historical alignment between private and public international law. Similarly, in part on the assumption that private international law settles conflicts of laws between already established states, there wouldn't appear to be any intuitive connection between nationalist or self-determination movements and the field of private international law. This talk will show that these assumptions are mistaken. By engaging with the historical development of the field from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, the talk will show that private international law has been deeply enmeshed in major geopolitical events generally, and in nationalist and self-determination movements, in particular. This enmeshment is neither accidental, nor exclusively modern. It is the inevitable result of some of private international law's main analytical and conceptual building blocks. We sit down with Banu Symington, a hematology-oncology physician, to explore a looming health care crisis affecting rural America. As more retirees move to rural communities, the number of health care providers is not keeping pace. Banu sheds light on the growing disparity between rural and urban health care access, the financial challenges threatening the survival of rural hospitals, and the flawed plan to turn these hospitals into triage-only facilities. We discuss the urgent need for sustainable solutions to prevent a worsening two-tiered health care system and ensure that rural patients have access to comprehensive medical care.
