Freddie and Joel both just won masters, so you know we're talking about that, but we're also getting into a bunch of other topics. Like how to make money waterskiing, trick skiing scoring/trick values, who we think has the most “on water” time, waterski media and how it compares to wakeboard media, social media/influencers values to brands, onlyfans, and a whole lot more. Plus, the guys rip smelling salts to start the pod, and eat a Malort candy midway through. My guest for this episode of the podcast is Chris Heron, who is the Director and Head Coach of Waterski and Wakeboard Scotland. Not only is he a coach, he is also the 3 time Scottish National Waterski Champion. This podcast happened because I just happened to open an email that came in through my contact form on my website. Nine times out of ten, those emails are junk solicitations. In this case, it was members of Chris's waterski team reaching out to say that they were fans of the podcast and thought he would be a good guest. I'm so glad I opened that email – because he WAS a great guest, and I had some much fun with this conversation. We spoke about everything from the routines and rituals that he has found useful in competition to getting over fears to his philosophy of learning. Chris comes at waterskiing from both the coaching and athlete perspective, which adds depth to his viewpoints. Plus, he is STILL skiing in the winter! We talked about the benefits of cold exposure, which he takes to a whole level beyond what most do. Whether you are a water skier, or your performance happens in other domains, there's something in this podcast for you. I'm sharing his slick bio below. I hope you enjoy this episode with Chris Heron.
It's no secret that athlete marketing is on the rise—and the people behind it are only getting started. This episode's guest, Elizabeth Montavon, is a pro water skier AND marketing pro. Not only is she a champion, but she and her company Parity aim to empower athletes, their brands, and more. Every athlete has a story to tell. How do you leverage that in an authentic way? And, athlete marketing isn't all about fancy cars and the hottest clubs. For many athletes (especially women), being vulnerable and sharing realistic content is something that's becoming more common. How can marketers help them grow their presence even further on social media? Plus, Elizabeth shares some advice for parents with young female athletes. If you're a sports fan or if your Instagram following tab has a ton of athletes on it, this is the episode for YOU. Who has won the most wakeboard contests? Who has invented the most tricks? Who has signed one of the largest contracts in wakeboardings history? The answer to all of those questions is Darin Shapiro. Darin got started in watersports before wakeboarding as we know it was even a thing. Starting at the cable, Darin took countless laps on a trick ski, and barefooting, but it wasn't until “ski boarding” came around that he really started to find some success. Darin was flown out by Herb O'Brien to a contest in Hawaii in 1991, and from there Darins journey in the sport began and had no signs of slowing down. Winning over 70 pro contests, inventing countless tricks, starring in 2 video games, signing one of wakeboardings largest contracts, the speedball, and retiring twice. Welcome to the 100th episode of The Water Ski Podcast.Originally recorded on February 9th, 2023, this is an interview with Fedele Luzzeri, my father. After an initial attempt of recording this in April 2022, we decided to give it another go in 2023. The challenges of translating the subtitles to English in order for skiers around the world to enjoy was marginally made easier by AI. The rest was just multiple listens and work.Dad's story into water skiing mostly follows a chronological order that listeners of The Water Ski Podcast are accustomed with, starting with the usual "How did you get into water skiing?" question.I hope you all enjoy as much as dad and I had a good time recording this._________________________This episode originally premiered live on YouTube on December 15th, 2023. Are you ready for some wakeskate convo? Well, Bobby is about to provide it. Bobby Sutherland is a wakeskater, live-stream god, business owner, and is known by many as being the commissioner of the Professional Wakeskate League. Growing up Bobby had a fascination with wakeboarding, and once he saw he could ditch the bindings, Bob picked up a wakeskate and hasn't put it down since. Bobby is an incredibly important behind the scenes piece of wakeboarding and wakeskating, putting on high quality livestreams like Valdosta's annual Yardsale event, as well as every PWL stop each year. Equal pay, awkward stances, backyard 2.0's, streaming events for OnlyFans models, starting the PWL, and getting punched at a winch spot. Have you ever wondered what it's like to purchase, install, or run your own cable wake park? Well, Mike Olson has done all of those things and much more, and he's done them at several locations. Mike Olson was the founder and operator of Kansas City Watersports for several years, and has seen it all when it comes to wake parks. Mike got his start into wakeboarding later than most, but his passion for wakeboarding and the business side of cable parks is as strong as can be. Repairing sabotaged parks, taking down cables in a hurricane, fun installations, hosting pro riders at your park, figuring out the business of a cable, the future of wakeboarding, the cost of a cable park, and why cable parks were originally only built to spin in one direction. Growing up riding with the likes of Julian and Yonel Cohen, winning contests, what its like to compete against his brother, his video "Sincerely, Trent", landing plenty of NBD's, funny travel stories, late night waffle house journeys, his new pro model board, and possibly riding in the PWT...? Todd Haig is arguably the best water ski racer in US history having won the prestigious Catalina Water Ski Race an unprecedented 16 times. 12 of those wins and a World Championship in 2005, were achieved with the help of his Team Nordic Racing teammates; driver and owner of Nordic and Hallett boats, Randy Davis, and observer, Dennis Hall. In 2014, with Catalina win number 12, Haig surpassed the Catalina record of 11 wins which was previously held by Water Skiing legend Chuck Stearns. For this episode, I am joined by all three members of Team Nordic Racing. We talk about the formula for the team's success as well as some of the nuances of water ski racing. We caught the boys only days before they headed off to race in Belgium in the infamous Diamond Race (which they won) and in Austria where they finished 3rd. They will compete in the 2023 Catalina Water Ski Race in Long Beach, California on July 22. Incredibly, in 1996, he went undefeated in jumping on the pro tour. Carl shares his memories about being a member of six U.S. teams, how technology has made the sport evolve, and how his time in the gym helped elevate him on the water.
