Why is Endicott playing in the first round? Why is Ursinus? Why does Centre get a bye? Why does Salisbury have to face a 6 or 7 seed in its first game instead of a 9 or 10? When the teams are already identified and all boiled down to a number value by a mathematical equation, the bracket is all we can talk about, and go figure, sometimes decisions are still being made by geography. Sometimes the NPI ranking of a team doesn't match up with what the general Division III fandom thinks, or what our voters think. And it doesn't seem like we would learn anything from talking to the NCAA committee chair, so we decided instead to interview the algorithm. Or in this case, we talked to Logan Hansen about who the last teams in and first teams out were, how John Carroll and Mary Hardin-Baylor made their big jumps up the NPI ranking, and exactly how much of an impact the UW-River Falls win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday had -- it's more than you probably think. And it's way more insightful than most committee chair conversations, so we hope you agree. Plus, we chat with Linfield coach Joe Smith for Fast Five, about west coast D-III football, his team's two-quarterback system, and the Wildcats finally being able to put last season's loss to Whitworth in Week 11 behind them. And we take a number of your questions in our mailbag segment. The D3football.com

D3football.com » D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast

A couple of key teams had a couple of close calls, and they were games that we were keeping a close eye on on Saturday. In Podcast 367, we're talking about Cortland pulling out its narrow win over Brockport to clinch the Empire 8 conference automatic bid, as well as Mount Union's similarly narrow win against Marietta to clinch the automatic bid from the Ohio Athletic Conference. What did we learn from these games? Did Cortland or Mount Union get moved down on Patrick or Greg's ballots? Did Brockport or Marietta move up? And what can we take away from Hardin-Simmons picking up that second win against Mary Hardin-Baylor? And who has rizz? Those are the burning questions we start the show with. In addition, Cortland coach Curt Fitzpatrick will join us to talk more about the strength of that Brockport defense, how he got his team's offense jump-started, why they don't run a bunch of gadget plays, and where Saturday's new leading receiver came from, plus getting ready for the Cortaca Jug rivalry game with Ithaca. Logan Hansen will break down teams' chances of getting that top eight seed, plus who the projected 12 at-large teams are once the dust settles on Saturday after the Week 11 games. Also, who will benefit if there is an upset or two among those key games this week? Plus we highlight even more stories from around each region of Division III football, and you probably know who the favorites are in the playoffs, but we tell you who the dark horse teams might be that could win a couple games in the bracket. And Dem Spicy Boys are back, or at least one particularly spicy running back.

Hardin-Simmons came out of Saturday with another big, signature win, its second in as many weeks. The Cowboys keep exorcising those demons, this time coming up with their first win in Mary Hardin-Baylor's Crusader Stadium.  What's it like to have beaten Mary Hardin-Baylor pretty impressively but also know that that's a good team on the other sideline that you have to play again this season? Do you hold anything back in your playbook for a second meeting? HSU coach Jesse Burleson joins us to talk about that and a few other things on Fast Five.  Plus, of course, another week of wackiness in the WIAC, and we'll talk through all of that mess, as well as the big showdown between Grove City and Carnegie Mellon. GCC coach Andrew DiDonato talks about that key win for his Wolverines. We'll whip you through the big games in Division III from this past weekend. Plus, who's having fun in the 1? Who's looking for something new in the 2? Who's running free in the 3? Who's looking for to restore the roar in the 4? Who's looking alive in the 5? And, who's got something to fix in the 6? To see a list of all the teams talked about in this podcast, look at the list at the bottom of the post. Math Correspondent Logan Hansen talks about the three biggest playoff leverage games for Week 7, plus gives his usual snapshot for how those top eight seeds are looking. Has Mount Union crept into the Top 8 yet? Remember, this is based on projection of how the season will play out and of course, teams with harder schedules might have a harder time making the top eight because they might not actually win all their games. We also hand out game balls to the top performers, pick out the stats of the week, and run through region by region to get some of the other stories you might have missed. And since that never seems to be enough, Greg and Patrick have to pick one more region to tell one more story about on the fly. There's that and so much more in this week's podcast, so give it a listen! The D3football.com podcast is a weekly in-season podcast by Patrick Coleman and Greg Thomas, which was started in 2007. New episodes are published weekly during the season.

The Bears had chances to win their last two games and couldn't pull either of them out. Week 3 results plus Week 4 matchups. Badgers off the bye week with a new QB1 and look decidedly average to just below. Some decent upsets this past weekend. Brewers are NL Central Division champions! Who they gonna get in the playoffs...? Plus standings and playoff races heading into the last week. Locally, halfway through the high school football season...and it's Parker/Craig week. UW-Whitewater got destroyed by Mary Hardin-Baylor and enters the bye week on a down note. All that and more coming in this edition! Tell your friends.

We are in mid-September and kicking off the football season.  With Cameron-Brooks Team Members who attended Texas A&M, Baylor, Notre Dame, West Point, and the Naval Academy, we are huge college football fans. Football is a holiday season here in Texas, you know. So, to celebrate, I hosted a podcast with my good friend, Troy Prehar, who played football at West Point from 1990 to 1993. Troy's second oldest son is a freshman football player at Mary Hardin Baylor, and Troy is also a youth football coach. Additionally, his brother, Mark, played football at West Point. Football runs deep with Troy and his family. Troy partnered with Cameron-Brooks in 1996 and transitioned from the Army to a medical device sales career. Troy has held numerous sales and sales leadership roles over his 27-year career. During this time, Troy has mentored hundreds of junior military officers (JMOs) transitioning from the military into sales careers. During this podcast, Troy tells his transition story. He explains how his dad modeled a life of service as someone who served a career in the Army as a commissioned officer. Troy also shares how JMO leadership relates to success in sales. Additionally, Troy explains why he thinks those who play athletics at any point in their life have a leg up on success in sales and a business career. Over the years, we have helped numerous former collegiate football players and other NCAA athletes. We recently hired Brock Dudley, who played soccer at USNA. Brock is joining the C-B team in October, and many of the C-B team members are already recruiting him to coach their kids' youth soccer teams. I hope you enjoy this fun podcast with Troy and join us in kicking off the football season by listening in. Welcome to Episode 107 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. It's the sixth season we're doing this and we're busier than ever but as excited as ever to get to do this ridiculous exercise all over again. We give our usual caveats about how we plan to preview each region before previewing the West. In order: ASC (at 3:33) It may finally be East Texas Baptist's time to shine -- they look loaded UT-Dallas has a lot to replace on offense but we still trust this program to be good Mary Hardin-Baylor has impressive pitching depth but will need some bats to step up Adios, Belhaven -- keep an eye on Hardin-Simmons  SCAC (at 17:05) Trinity (TX) has some huge bats to replace but should still rake while the pitching remains a question mark Texas Lutheran has a strong offensive core returning even if their best player from 2022 is gone Centenary (LA) has an excellent top of the rotation but will need to find some more thump on offense Shoutout Southwestern (TX) and St. Thomas (who came to D-III instead of leaving it like the MN school smh smh) SCIAC (at 28:37) Chapman's pitching should be elite again and have some ultra-exciting young hitters Pomona-Pitzer is trending up in a huge way and could have one of the best offenses in the country Cal Lutheran has a solid returning lineup but some questions on the mound We can always count on La Verne to compete NWC (at 42:00) Pacific (OR) has most of their main dudes back for what looks like another potential postseason run  If Pacific Lutheran had posted their roster by the time we recorded this we'd feel a lot better about how good they were going to be Every other team in this conference could realistically make some noise; look for Lewis & Clark to keep trending up and Whitman to bounce back We conclude (at 49:20) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Contemporary metal leaf oil artist Michelle Sakhai reveals her process of connecting to deep feelings and transforming them into love when she paints. She shares the importance of sitting with our emotions, even those parts of ourselves that we avoid, and by honoring, them, we transform them.  "It doesn't matter what your paint, whether figurative or abstract, but it matters that you are present and connecting to your higher self," she said. It's a form of meditation because you connect to a deeper part of yourself. Michelle has used breathwork, prayer, incense, and other aspects of her native upbringing that represent home to align with her creative state. Everyone's tools will be unique to them. Michelle cautions that you should never be so attached to your tools that you can only work with them.Be prepared to try new things. Being uncomfortable can be good; challenge yourself by choosing something outside your comfort zone. Michelle explains that working with metallic leaf belies a childhood spent in the hills of Japan near a Buddhist temple. She was reacquainted with metallic leaf when visiting an Asian exhibit in San Francisco and loved the texture, brilliance, and way that metallic leaf catches the light.Michelle uses metallic flakes loosely to capture light and flutter with passing movement. "You don't stop the leaf from falling off the painting," she said. "I put so much on that even if some falls off, there's plenty left." It's the changing and evolving aspect of the art that Michelle likes so much.Michelle Sakhai is a contemporary artist who specializes in metal-leaf oil paintings. Her mixed heritage has shaped her as an artist. With both Persian and Japanese roots, her art derives influences from both cultures. Family trips to Japan initially exposed her to metal leaf and inspired her to become a pioneer in this medium.Sakhai's paintings are exhibited in worldwide galleries, including Tokyo, Ibiza, Miami, and New York City. Her art remains in private and public collections, including the Montefiore Einstein Medical Center, The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, and Kamakura Park in Japan. Sakhai's work has been exhibited in Universities, including Stamford, Michigan Medicine, The Academy of Art, Hofstra, and Mary Hardin-Baylor. She recently published her first book on Amazon titled 'Awakening,' a compilation of 200 paintings.Follow her on Instagram @michellesakhaiart or visit her website www.michellesakhai.com for more information.

It's No. 1 vs. No. 2, just as everyone expected, as North Central and Mount Union advance to play in Stagg Bowl XLIX in Annapolis. While this is a rematch of teams that played in the second round in 2019, then in the semifinals the next season (2021), this particular rematch turns the tables. 2022 Division III football playoff bracket It's unusual not just in that it's the first one being played outside of Alliance, Ohio. It's also now a flipping of the old paradigm. Suddenly it's North Central, playing in the Stagg Bowl for the third consecutive time, that is the program with all the Stagg Bowl experience, while Mount Union hasn't played in the game since 2018, and hasn't won it since 2017. This edition of the podcast is sponsored by the hosts of Stagg Bowl XLIX, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Division III football championship game on Dec. 16. We sit down for a long postgame conversation with North Central's Brad Spencer after his team's win against Mary Hardin-Baylor. And we don't, or can't, with Mount Union's Geoff Dartt. We certainly try, and we try multiple times a year, and we'll talk more about that. Meanwhile, we'll hear from the Mount Union coach and players solely via the team's postgame news conference. Plus, we take reader questions, one from a reader who isn't satisfied merely to have his team win, but questions why people didn't pick North Central to win by more. (The answer is simple, and we'll give it to you on the podcast.) And another prompts a good discussion of which games on North Central's and Mount Union's schedule provide the best opportunity to gain insight on how this week's game will be played.  This is the first of three podcasts to come this week. The next will drop Friday morning and preview the Stagg Bowl, and the following one will drop on Saturday morning and give our breakdown of the game, plus our rationale as to why we chose whomever we end up choosing as our Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Plus In The Huddle's Frank Rossi was in Abilene, Texas, for the Mary Hardin-Baylor win against Hardin-Simmons and he not only brings audio from Kyle King and Johnny Smith-Rider, he brings his first-hand eyewitness report. In addition, Pat and Greg hand out game balls, spotlight two interesting things from each region (as always), plus more. There's a list in small type at the bottom of this page of all the teams that are talked about. Fan question in our mailbag from Mike Shoultz @mikey_shoultz: Are we ranking the BEST TEAMS? Or the best RESUMES? We all know If Platteville, or Stout line it up against Albion, DePauw, Huntingdon they're beating them by 7-21 points. While their records aren't as good, they're better teams. And if matched up that would be proven. (There's more in a second tweet from him as well.) Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast is a regular conversation covering the wide range of Division III football. We're getting ready to kick it all off with the first week of Division III football games for 2022 this weekend, and this week's podcast takes you around to the big stories and big things we're watching across Division III this season. We take it on, region by region. What's fun in the 1? What's new in the 2? What do we see in the 3? What's in store in the 4? Who'll thrive in the 5? What's in the mix in the 6? Pat and Greg run it all down, along with special guest Frank Rossi of In the Huddle weighing in on Regions 1 and 2. Plus, we know -- we know, sometimes it's hard to pay attention in the offseason. If that's you, never fear -- Pat runs down the big news from the offseason, in song form. Yes, in song form -- picture the Yakko's World song from Animaniacs, and if that doesn't resonate with your generation, just know we tested it against a 9-year-old, a 20-year-old, a 39-year-old and a 49-year-old and they had all heard the original. Lyrics below, in case it's too fast to follow! There are a number of big games -- rest assured we'll talk plenty about UW-Whitewater at St. John's and Muhlenberg at Mary Hardin-Baylor in other ways before those games kick off, so we focus on two additional games to watch.
