Episode OverviewIn this episode of Spiral Deeper, our host, Gaby Azorsky, speaks with Deb Dana. Deb Dana is a clinician, consultant, author, and international lecturer on polyvagal theory-informed work with trauma survivors and is the leading translator of this scientific work to the public and mental health professionals. A founding member of the Polyvagal Institute, Deb developed the signature Rhythm of Regulation® Clinical Training Series: The Science of Feeling Safe Enough To Fall in Love with Life and Take the Risks of Living. By understanding and learning about the nervous system, Deb Dana has created the Rhythm of Regulation® to help humans resolve the impact of trauma in our lives so we may fall in love with life. Deb's work shows how an understanding of Polyvagal Theory is applicable across the board to relationships, mental health, and trauma. Deb believes that we all benefit when we have a basic understanding of the ways the nervous system works and learn how to become active operators of this essential system. Following this passion has led her to offering workshops in partnership with groups and communities outside of the clinical arena - and bringing the Polyvagal perspective to the ordinary, and sometimes extraordinary, experiences of daily living.Together, they dive into rhythms of life, polyvagal theory and her work, our nervous systems, the organizing principles of neuroception, hierarchy, and co-regulation, and more. They also talk about attachment and attunement, safe others to feel nourished, what it means to be regulated as friends/partners/parents, and some ways to start resourcing ourselves to be able to be with what is. Gaby highly recommends this episode if you would like to begin to better understand how our nervous systems function unconsciously, and how we can learn to listen and co-regulate with ourselves and with each other to create lives that are more joyful, grounded, and resilient. The CWA is an icon of Australia.Everyone knows it, respects it and most have a story to share about it. The Country Women's Association is akin family for anyone who's ever lived in rural Australia,For the last 100 years its women have been responsible for huge progress in the areas of health, facilities and telecommunications for the bush. But more than that – decades ago, when city women fell in love and married men who were from the country, often they were leaving the comforts of city life, to take up house, that was no more than a dwelling, often there was no electricity, no plumbing, it's unlikely there was a garden, plush finishes and soft furnishings were not widespread. The adjustment was huge, and times were lonely – and this is where the CWA women quietly played their part. Arriving at the doorsteps of these women, with warm scones or cake, to introduces themselves to the newcomer, and then explain the lie of the land and offer friendship, connection and eventually community. Our guest today is the CEO of the CWA of NSW Danica Leys – she grew up on the outskirts of Sydney in Picton, studied Ag Science, went on to work for a law firm and has now landed as the CEO of the CWA of NSW.In this conversations, we explore Danica's unconventional rise in the ranks of ag advocacy and we observe the relevance of the CWA of NSW as it celebrates its 100 year anniversary. This week's podcast is sponsored by Sorority Clothing. With our daily lives inundated with news and anxiety around the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, it's easy to forget another major story from just a few months ago. The Australian bushfire season of 2019-2020 has garnered global attention. People all around the world were shocked by stories of massive wildlife loss, charred landscapes, destroyed homes and businesses, and displaced communities. But now that the fires have gone out, what have we learned? To hear how these fires impacted the country's ecosystems, people, and politics, we turn to two colleagues from southeastern Australia. Dr. Jamie Pittock is a professor at Australian National University (www.anu.edu.au/), while Dr. Emma Carmody — a previous guest on ClimateReady — works at the Environmental Defenders Office (www.edo.org.au/). Jamie and Emma talk us through the wide-ranging impacts of this season's bushfires. We hear how climate change, ongoing drought, and specific governance and management policies all worked in conjunction to feed the conditions for such devastating fires. We pay particular attention to the short- and long-term impacts on freshwater ecosystems and wildlife before turning to ways in which the tragedy may lead to positive behavioral and policy changes. For listeners interested in helping the ecosystems and people harmed by Australia's bushfires, we are including a list of some great organizations recommended by Jamie and Emma.
