The mailbag is pretty active in this podcast, with listeners chiming in with questions about how Concordia (Wis.) will do in transitioning from the NACC to the CCIW, whether this year’s new technology in Division III will be added more smoothly than last year, what Trinity (Texas) was leaving behind in leaving its long-time conference home, and which mascot matchup would be our favorite. We’ll also talk about the new quarterback transferring into UW-Oshkosh, and finally get Coe and UW-Oshkosh schedules finalized. Plus, we have two guests: Trinity (Conn.) head coach Jeff Devanney and Ithaca coach Brandon Maguire. At Trinity, the day we’ve all been waiting for is arriving, where the NESCAC is finally allowed to go to the playoffs. The Bantams are all smiles. If you missed it, the conference presidents have been holding NESCAC football teams back for about 30 years while all other sports have been permitted to play on past Week 11. Devanney talks about how that changes the recruiting pitch, both for incoming student-athletes and a handful of key players who have an extra year of eligibility to be used. At Ithaca, Maguire gets promoted from within and talks about how many of the 96 players on the roster they managed to get to stick around after the previous coach left right before Christmas. Why did they players who stayed, stay? What does Ithaca need to get back to the very top of the Liberty League standings and get to the playoffs? What are the Bomber alumni most concerned about? That and more in this conversation. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. The Coaching Carousel took many spins since we dropped our previous podcast, and it's time we caught up with those movements and get someone on the podcast! That honor goes to Michael Zweifel at UW-La Crosse, who replaces Matt Janus after Janus's move to Division II. Zweifel was one of two finalists who were UW-L coordinators, but he says there was no feats of strength competition with fellow Eagles staffer Tarek Yaeggi, who is a La Crosse alumnus and remains offensive coordinator. Key topics of conversation: Will Zweifel continue to call the defense? And how did the all-time record-holding wide receiver in NCAA Division III history make that transition from offense to defense in the first place? As a guy who grew up around the UW-Whitewater Warhawks program, where his dad was an assistant coach, who were his favorite Warhawks? What changes does Zweifel have in mind for the La Crosse program? WashU didn't change coaches, but the football program is changing conferences this season, and that means going from the CCIW, where North Central and Wheaton stood between the Bears and the playoffs, to the North Coast Athletic Conference, where the list of teams at the top is even longer: John Carroll, DePauw, Wabash, now WashU. Bears coach Aaron Keen talks about what kind of offseason preparation they are doing to get ready for nine new opponents this fall, the long career of former head coach Larry Kindbom, who coached Keen as a player and remained on as a full-time assistant coach up until retiring at the age of 72. We also finish our mini-tour of Division III football programs in Southern California which are being revived as we chat with Azusa Pacific football coach AJ Parnell. Parnell is a former Bethel quarterback and assistant coach who returned to the west coast to bring this football program back, after it had been dormant since 2020, and to bring some Division III experience to an athletic department which could use it, as the school reclassifies from NCAA Division II to Division III. Our guests on this podcast: UW-La Crosse coach Michael Zweifel, WashU coach Aaron Keen and Azusa Pacific coach AJ Parnell.

It isn't quite the best Stagg Bowl of all time, but surely there's nobody in River Falls, Wisconsin, who cares about that as UW-River Falls brought Walnut and Bronze home to the town of 16,000 on Monday after a 24-14 win against North Central in Stagg Bowl LII. Kaleb Blaha, with 419 yards of total offense, and three total touchdowns responsible for, with one final NCAA record to his name, was a deserving Most Outstanding Player of the Stagg Bowl, and you could make a case for a number of defensive players as well, as many made big plays throughout the night and down the stretch to ensure that the Falcons would fly home with the trophy. After the game, Patrick Coleman, Greg Thomas and postseason regular Keith McMillan sat down to discuss the big game, perhaps crack open a beverage, hand out game balls, hear the highlights, point out the interesting stats and give their big picture perspective on the big game and on the 2025 season. What was the good, what was the bad, and sure, what was the ugly of 2025? That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. Hear what UW-River Falls safety Andre Hall thinks about the pace of the game compared to the pace of practice. Cortez Jones and North Central coach Brad Spencer talk about what you'll see when the offensive is playing well. Falcons Gagliardi winner and quarterback Kaleb Blaha talks about how it felt to get a few extra days off between games and our panel discusses both the mental and physical benefits of getting that time back. North Central's J.P. Sullivan talks about carrying on the tradition of great Cardinals defensive linemen. River Falls receiver Blake Rohrer discusses the Falcons wide receiver group. Cardinals receiver Thomas Skokna talks about the possibly unexpected way he and quarterback Garret Wilson built their chemistry. Falcons linebacker Gage Timm talks about how the UW-RF season has prepared them for this moment and coach Matt Walker talks about the important thing he had to do before he could commit to the Top Gun offense. UW-Oshkosh coach Peter Jennings joins us to talk about coaching against each of these teams this season, and how you can't play the comparative scores game when looking at his Titans' games against North Central and UW-River Falls. Plus, we take your mailbag questions, talk about coaching changes and much more. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. One of the two semifinals was a classic, fit for kids from 1 to 92 ... if you can handle stress, that is. And we aren't just spouting cliches when we say this is as good as it gets -- in the history of the national semifinals since automatic bids were added and the playoffs expanded beyond four rounds in 1999, there have been only two years where both semifinals were close. It's far more likely that both of them are two-score games! So to get not just one good one, but one epic one, well, that's great. When Kaleb Blaha threaded the tiniest hole to find Blake Rohrer, and Rohrer ran untouched to the end zone for a 79-yard touchdown against Johns Hopkins, it not only sent the Falcons to the Stagg Bowl for the first time ever, it united a community, and was another memorable moment in a friendship between the two. They talk about it, how they met, how Blaha recruited Rohrer to come out for the UW-River Falls football team, and how the River Falls community reacted on Saturday night, in Around the Nation. 2016 Around the Nation column: Out of darkness, light, by Adam Turer, featuring the rebuilding UW-River Falls program At North Central, the Cardinals got the best passing performance of the season from Garet Wilson, and Jack Rummell had some amazing catches and runs. What did Wilson say to him before a third-and-8 play, and how did Rummell respond? We also hear from transfer defensive end Eli Renick, and chat with coach Brad Spencer about what's next for North Central as they head to their sixth consecutive Stagg Bowl. Plus, for Johns Hopkins, what does this run ending mean for the state of the program? And for John Carroll, it's the end of two years where Nick Semptimphelter was able to play football for the Blue Streaks with tight end Terrence Rawls, who was not just his high school teammate, but a literal member of his family. He talks about that, and coach Jeff Behrman talks about Semptimphelter. Patrick and Greg also hand out game balls and we take your questions in the mailbag. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation podcast is a weekly conversation about NCAA Division III football, and has been running since 2007.

ADOT 's Doug Nintzel sits down with ADOT's Jeremy DeGeyter about the things happening in the Northcentral District.
It's a milestone podcast, but we're not quite to the final stage of the Division III football season. You can't blame us for getting dressed up -- OK, maybe just Greg decided to dress up for the audio podcast. But answering the call to the Final Four ball were who most people thought they were in our predictions this week: Johns Hopkins, John Carroll, North Central and UW-River Falls. And instead of doing the blow-by-blow of each game -- because, let's be honest, the average margin of victory was nearly 20 points -- let's hear from people in the middle of each of these games. So we'll be joined by John Carroll cornerback Dylan Crasi, who spent the first half on the sidelines but made his presence known right away in the third quarter. We'll talk to North Central quarterback Garet Wilson, whose first year in Division III since coming from Oklahoma State has been a revelation for both Division III and for him. We chat with UW-River Falls coach Matt Walker about the schematic and playbook choices the Falcons made this week, how they kept players warm (seriously, there was a detailed plan). And Keith McMillan talks to Johns Hopkins offensive lineman Michael Nwosu and defensive lineman Graham Hodge about their play on a day where the Blue Jays' line play was huge. Plus, the coaching carousel continues to turn as Ithaca loses a second consecutive coach to the Ivy League. Sewanee makes a hire who has much more D-III experience than the last guy they hired. And Lawrence didn't even give its new coach six months before cutting him loose? Patrick and Greg also hand out game balls and we take your questions in the mailbag segment, and Patrick gives an early Stagg Bowl prediction? That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.
There's no avoiding the “Shot Heard ‘round the Bracket,” but we focus on all eight big 3rd Round D3FB Playoff games in this Crunchtime episode. Frank & JB look at each game in-depth, and the discuss the implications of the games before looking at JB's MVPs and previewing the Quarterfinals. Note that this episode was shot before the sad news of Coach Jeff Thorne's and Jermey Michael's passing - we will cover both on Friday's Live show. We delayed the release of the show, but we understand that Coach Thorne would want the football to continue for North Central and all of the teams out there. This episode is released in tribute and dedication to Coach Thorne. More Friday. When the previous "biggest win in school history" is from the 1950s, replacing the entry at the top of the list means something. Sure, you could quibble over whether a win against Syracuse from seven decades ago, or a national quarterfinal win at Brockport in 2002, or a quarterfinal win at UW-Whitewater in 2016 should be next on the list, but no regular season win, even one against Mount Union, compares with beating Mount Union at Mount Union in the playoffs. A win of this nature is so iconic that the head coach's phone blows up, and so does the feed of everyone else even remotely associated with John Carroll football. The traffic on D3football.com nearly doubled in the course of 10 minutes. There's no pretending this is an ordinary win. And to John Carroll's credit, they didn't try to. We chat with Jeff Behrman, the JCU head coach, about having confidence in kicker Colin Schuler after a missed chip shot in the first overtime nearly cost them the game, about the key final play of the game, and about the team's return to campus, the reception, and what's next for the Blue Streaks. We bring back in former co-host Keith McMillan to break down the play, what he saw on video from his perspective as a former Division III football starting safety. Mailbag questions came hard for this game. The one we chose to answer was whether this means that JCU is up to Mount Union's level or if Mount Union has slipped and there's just one elite team. The answer is perhaps no different than it was when Keith and Greg Thomas wrote a column under the headline "Today, we are all Mount Union" after the 2022 Stagg Bowl, for we are all chasing North Central. We take your mailbag questions. We have postgame audio from all eight games and break them all down. Keith also sits down with Johns Hopkins coach Dan Wodicka and safety Sam Bourdo. Bethel's David Geebli talks about recovering from fumbling on the first snap of the game. Susquehanna's Josh Ehrlich takes the blame for the River Hawks' slow start. Matt Walker talks about UW-River Falls' slow start, although it was fairly brief. Jesse Scott talks about what they saw that was familiar in DePauw's run defense. Berry safety Chaz Pope talks about his game-sealing interception. There's those clips and much more in this podcast. Plus we drop some scoop as to when we will release our All-America team, we answer whether we really thought Johns Hopkins lost some shine after the F&M loss and we bring the receipts to prove it (they're all on the website). Patrick and Greg also hand out game balls, bring you through the stats of the week and we take your questions in the mailbag segment. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.
We knew to expect a ton of snow for every game between Collegeville and Holland. We knew to expect Susquehanna would have more than a fighting chance at Christopher Newport. We knew to expect a likely rematch of former OAC rivals. What we didn't know to expect was five road teams winning in the round of 32! Last year, which was the first year the playoff bracket had 40 teams, there was just one road win in the second round. Normal seems to be somewhere in between the two, but way closer to one than five. We should have known that Wheaton had a good chance at Wartburg. The Hansen Ratings even told us so before the game. But the win, nonetheless, was surprising, and we welcome Wheaton coach Jesse Scott to the podcast to talk about it. He discusses what quarterback Mark Forcucci looks like when he is at his best -- helpful info for someone who has only seen him play North Central, a game in which he was battling to get back from injury. He talks about his coaching and leadership philosophy, and which philosophy prof at Wheaton should be credited, or perhaps not, with helping mold that. Patrick and Greg also go through each of the first round games. There is postgame audio from around a dozen of the 16 advancing teams, and we are grateful to the schools who got these postgame news conferences online or were willing to share them with us so we could bring this audio to you. We also hand out game balls, bring you through the stats of the week and we take your questions in the mailbag segment. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.
We have just three weeks left in the regular season, with Selection Sunday and the bracket announcement coming on Nov. 16. With the NCAA Division III football national committee no longer responsible for selecting teams to play in the playoffs, what does the committee chair do? It's a little more than just handing the trophy off to the team that wins the Stagg Bowl, like John Snell is doing in this photo, but sure, it's a little less than it used to be. Instead, the role is different, and includes more about bracketing, more about game management, more about how to enhance the entire playoff experience than the general fan ever probably knew. John Snell, the associate athletic directory at Baldwin Wallace University and the chair of the Division III football committee, sits down with us to answer our questions. Some of these questions are: Will there be more replay review in this year's playoffs? How high in the NPI does a team have to be to avoid playing in the first round? (Just being in the top 24 doesn't guarantee it.) Will the committee shuffle the seeds to make sure that Mount Union and North Central are on opposite sides of the bracket? Are we getting the right teams in the field under the NPI system? Since Baldwin Wallace might make the playoffs, does the chair have to recuse himself from conference calls? Why are we still bothering with regional rankings? Is the committee doing any mock bracketing to prepare for Selection Sunday? All of these are asked! Many of them are answered, plus you get the reaction from Patrick Coleman and Greg Thomas. Find out more by listening to the podcast. We also take your mailbag questions -- yes, including the one involving alien space laser beams from Mars -- and much more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. We're getting ever closer to Selection Sunday, and closer to automatic bids being clinched. We've already discussed how few unbeaten teams there are this time of year compared to previous years, and of course, we had one more go down on Saturday when Wartburg defeated Central. Wartburg has been really consistent at the top of the American Rivers Conference, or near the top of it. Head coach Chris Winter isn't the only head coach who has been part of this run, but the Knights coaching staff has been really consistent over the years. We talk with Winter about how the program achieves this consistency while turning players over year after year, we hear about the key offensive guys who are healthy and the defensive starter who could be on the Owen Grover upward trajectory. Plus, we look at the Whitewater offense, with its moments of brilliance, and try to decipher what they need. We take four mailbag questions, everything from deciphering which conferences have benefited the most from the NPI system and playoff expansion, to which play in the North Central game was most impressive, to whether there should be a cutoff for record for at-large teams, to which game -- of a limited set of choices -- we would choose to go see in Week 11 if we have to book travel now. (Spoilers: The travel was already booked, and we'll tell you where Patrick Coleman will be in Week 11.) Plus, Patrick and Greg hand out game balls, one for one of the craziest endings to a game you could describe from Saturday's games. We talk about how long it's been since New England College had won a game before the Pilgrims beat Maine Maritime on Saturday -- it's longer than you think! We dive into the double SCIAC double overtime games, and the controversial ending between DePauw and Denison, and whether River Falls needs Kaleb Blaha on Saturday (it wouldn't hurt!). We spotlight the unusual stats of the week, Logan Hansen talks about which teams have the best chance of getting a top-eight seed and protected home field in the playoffs, we go around each region for even more stories and much more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.
Ah yes, we not only go from the land of serious tailgating to also serious tailgating. From 20,000 fans to 6,500 fans in a rivalry game. These are two great tastes that tasted great together on Saturday, part of a smorgasbord of great Division III football, with so many games that we actually didn't even talk about Muhlenberg-Ursinus in this podcast. (But we will probably talk about Muhlenberg at some point.) Here's who you will be seeing -- or hearing about. We run down the UW-La Crosse win at UW-Whitewater and talk with La Crosse coach Matt Janus, we talk about Oshkosh-River Falls, we talk about North Central-Wheaton and hear from North Central coach Brad Spencer, and we talk about Bethel-St. John's and Royals coach Mike McElroy joins us on Fast Five. It's like this week was a Christmas present wrapped up in an October day that sure felt like it was Aug. 22. Phew. Hot! But so was the action on the field in Week 5, and Patrick and Greg hand out game balls, spotlight the unusual stats of the week, Logan Hansen talks about which teams have the best chance of getting a top-eight seed and protected home field in the playoffs, we go around each region for even more stories and much more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. Plus, we take the mailbag question that really ties it all together and has a nice finish.
