If you grew up attending church, there is a good chance that you might have sung the song “Father Abraham” and learned that he had many sons. Yet, as we continue through Genesis, we see God's faithfulness to and work through women who are the mothers of Israel: Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel. Rebekah, a woman who was called by God from her mother's house (Beit Im), and loved, teaches us to consider the questions: What can we glean from her story? Was she devoted or a deceiver? Was she oppressed or an opportunist?

After a stellar 14-year NFL career, all with the San Francisco 49ers, Bryant Young was inducted earlier this month into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In honor of his enshrinement, we are revisiting a conversation that he and his wife, Kristin, had on Table Forty in late December 2021. Young was one of the best defensive players of his generation. Named to four Pro Bowls, he was also named a First Team All-Pro in 1996. In 1999 he was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year by both the Associated Press and the Professional Football Writers Association, and in 1994 he was named to the NFL All-Rookie team after a stellar three-year college career at Notre Dame. He also named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame 2nd Team All-1990s Team. It was at Notre Dame that he met Kristin, and they've been together for 31 years. At his enshrinement, Young was presented by his daughter, Kai, and former 49ers owner “Mr. D,” Edward DeBartolo Jr. With the rest of his family in attendance as well, he gave a powerful speech in which he gave glory to God and honored his late son, Colby, who passed away in 2016 from cancer at the age of 15. Be sure to watch his entire speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvS4rznuJj4 “Table Forty” is part of the Sports Spectrum Podcast Network.

All month long, we've been sharing conversations about the 'battles we don't always see.' We've talked about raising a special needs child, anxiety, struggling with a chaotic marriage, and today we are going to hear from NFL hall of famer, Bryant Young, and his incredible wife Kristin, as they share their testimony of walking with the Lord through cancer, grief, and loss. From the prayer they prayed when they received the news of their son's diagnosis, to the way they walked this road with 5 other children at home, hearing their story will grow your faith. Their testimony is one that epitomizes Romans 5:3-4, "...we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

We can't imagine anything worse than having a child so sick that they need to be in the hospital for care. There are so many things running through your mind -- what's going on, what's the treatment, when will they get better... and if you don't live close to Charlotte or the hospital your child is in... where can I stay, and how long will I be able to do that? Ronald McDonald Houses relieve some of that burden for parents by giving families a place to stay while their children are in the hospital. Kristin Young from Ronald McDonald House Charlotte joins us to tell us what's going on there right now.

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 9! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Veronica Lane founder of Project Manager Guru, Inc. Veronica Lane is an Author, Speaker, and Trainer who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Veronica Lane’s take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of emotional intelligence, overcoming challenges, and the difference between perfection and excellence.   Veronica Lane Bio Veronica Lane, Founder and CEO of Project Manager Guru, Inc., is a highly respected B2B management and leadership training developer serving clients across both the public and private sectors. Her successful track record affords her the opportunity to facilitate workshops for governmental clients like the United States Navy and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the Fashion Industry and Institutions of Higher Learning. She is the author of The Book of Veronica - Beyond the Certification and is a regular project management speaker at business conferences across the United States and abroad. Veronica began her career as a gymnastics coach and thought her path would include teaching children how to dig deep into their power to summon their greatness.  As time went on, this desire to better lives transformed into providing services for the finance and banking industries.  While taking on various management roles, she uncovered a gap in the employee development space.  It was this gap that lead her to create her company Project Manager Guru, Inc.  Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Veronica and I hope you did as well! I agree with Veronica’s viewpoint on the importance of working within the limitations of others to have successful and effective relationships. Veronica’s suggestion to avoid taking people out of their comfort zone in an unhealthy way, was spot on! It is extremely necessary to treat people the way THEY want to be treated, and not assume that our personal desires are the same as those around us. This takes getting to know people and respecting how they prefer to be dealt with. To be a successful leader, we MUST take ourselves out of the equation! I admire Veronica’s determination to overcome her biggest challenge, which happened to be public speaking. Our greatest struggle can become our greatest achievement if we put in the work. According to Veronica, the challenges we experience in life are usually the areas we are meant to help others with. Veronica and many others have proven this to be so, and I believe it because I have seen and experienced it myself! In S1 E6: Leadership Empowerment with Kristin Young, she also spoke about this same concept. A quote by Albert Einstein reads, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity”.   I can relate to Veronica’s logical and questioning nature as I am the same. I have an issue blindly following any directions I receive that does not make sense to me, AND I will ask the questions I deem necessary to get to a better understanding before deciding whether or not to move forward. To some this behavior may come across as argumentative or defiant, while to others it comes across as being rational and having great critical thinking abilities, everyone views things differently. On a broader scale, I can see how this skillset plays a role in being in the Project Management field, which shows that is has actually served us both well in the long run. Nicole Walker’s Takeaway of the Week Veronica mentioned the benefits of using of our unscheduled time more effectively, in an effort to be more productive. I especially liked the idea of putting together a master tasks list of my intentions, then separating each item by critical or non-critical tasks. I see how this will make it easier to focus on the proper tasks at the appropriate time. I do not want to get caught up doing minimal effort tasks during my peak performance time, so I will be sure to categorize my master task list accordingly. I want to increase my output, so I will make it my business to complete non-critical tasks during my in between and unscheduled time. A quote by Sam Levenson reads, “Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.” Nicole Walker’s Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.  I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once.  When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result.  I challenge you to do the same!  If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way.  If you care to share please go to the She Leads Podcast Discussion Group on FB and leave your comment under the Takeaway Thursday post for Season 4 Episode 9. Don’t forget to subscribe to She Leads Podcast for first access to future episodes. And, like and share this episode of She Leads Podcast entitled, “Emotional Intelligence Sets You Apart with Veronica Lane”. Thanks and until next time “Be Empowered and Empower On”!

What Women Should Know About Ovarian Cancer

MediTalk Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2019 21:57

What do you know about ovarian cancer? Do you know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer? Do you think a pap smear detects ovarian cancer? Simple questions but, how many women would not know the correct answers to these questions? I was one of those women and I am sure I am not alone! Having a greater awareness of this type of gynaecological cancer can really help women around the world feel more comfortable to reach out and speak with their doctor. In Australian February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and later in the year on May 8th we not only acknowledge 'Mothers Day' but we also mark this day in our calendar as 'World Ovarian Cancer Day'. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, "ovarian cancer is the 18th most common cancer worldwide. There were nearly 300,000 new cases of ovarian cancer in 2018''. Sadly, in Australia approximately 1600 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year. And every day in Australia, four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and three will die from the disease. Ovarian cancer generally describes a malignant tumour that starts in one or both ovaries. The signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer can be quite common signs and symptoms of other health conditions such as; excessive fatigue, persistant bloating and stomach pain. For this reason, it is paramount as women we become more aware of ovarian cancer to empower ourselves with knowledge and feel okay to start a discussion with our doctor about ovarian cancer if we are concerned. Increasing our knowledge and awareness of ovarian cancer at this stage is the best way currently we have to reduce our risk of suffering from this disease. To learn more about ovarian cancer I was honored to speak with a courageous woman called Kristin who is living with ovarian cancer which is currently in remission and Kristin continues to fight the statistics. Through her individual ovarian cancer journey we all can take away some key messages to increase our knowledge of this type of gynaecological cancer. In the interview we discuss the common signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, ways ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the BRCA gene link to ovarian cancer, treatment and current research being conducted in ovarian cancer. If you have a mum, sister, best-girlfriend, aunt or nan share Kristin's journey with them so together as women around the world we become more health empowered through increasing our awareness of ovarian cancer. A big thank you to Kristin Young for kindly sharing her story with us all and to Ovarian Cancer Australia for all the wonderful support they co-ordinate and provide to Australian women. www.ovariancancer.net.au Let's paint the world with Teal to increase Ovarian Cancer Awareness! Ovarian Cancer charities around the world do a great job lobbying for greater research and treatment of Ovarian Cancer and for this we are thankful! This week is a huge milestone as we are celebrating the 100th episode of the Moms With Dreams Show! I’ve been anticipating this day for several weeks now. I remember when I started my podcast back in May 2015. Producing one show per week felt like an eternity away from 100, but now it’s finally here! Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard from other podcasters that I am the exception in the industry – that most podcasts don’t make it past 20 episodes, let alone reach 100! I had no idea since all the podcasts that I listen to are successful with hundreds of episodes. This conversation was my reminder to stop and acknowledge myself for making it this far – something that I often forget to do. Instead of interviewing a guest or teaching a lesson, I invited my listeners and previous guests to join me in this episode. After my extended introduction, you’ll hear audio clips of them sharing a few words about the show. I am grateful for my community and want you to have access to these wonderful people. Words have the power to speak life or death, and your word is your bond. When you commit to someone or something, do you slay what you say you'll do -- meaning see that commitment through to the end and do it the best you can -- or do you treat that obligaiton as if it's optional? For example, if you commit to exercising three times a week until you can fit in your favorite suit or jeans again, do you stick with it till you can rock that Armani or do you give up two weeks in becasue life gets in the way, you get tired, distracted or aren't seeing any results yet? Or are you the kind of person who means what they say and will slay that goal as if nothing else matters? In this show Kristin and Danica will be equipping you with all the weapons you'll need to not only slay what you say but also cut through all the unnecessary distractions and overwhelm that can keep you from reaching whatever victory you've set out to achieve! Kristin Michelle Young is a wife, mother student, teacher, speaker, coach and marriage ENTHUSIAST! She founded Living the Vows as a platform to promote the joys of marriage and to minimize the perils of divorce. Danica Trebel, Famiy ~ Life Coach at UnlearningU, knows first-hand the power of the spoken and unspoken word. It was through her own personal and professional experiences that she was led to this place of healing, restoration and passion to help others. She is an expert in helping people live their lives to the fullest through faith, communication and vulnerability. www.danicatrebel.org
