As we celebrate 500 episodes of Podcast Talent Coach, I want to share with you six mentors who have shaped my journey over the past 10 years. LEARNING FROM MENTORS I learned long ago that I don't know everything and never will. Every experience is an opportunity to learn something. Conferences and conventions are always such a powerful experience for me. Many people say they rarely go to the session and instead have conversations in the halls. I can understand that. But, I think they are missing the power of the collective mind. Mingling in the halls during a conference will definitely grow your network. It has a place in your business. However if you skip all the sessions, you are missing ideas that could take your business to an entirely new level. We would attend the Country Radio Seminar every year in radio. I would travel with my music director for the station. During the day, we would take in all the sessions of the conferences. At night, we would split up to attend events and network with artists and record labels. From the sessions, we would learn new ideas to implement with the stations. At night, we would network with people who could help us implement those ideas. Then one day our company decided it wasn't necessary for both of us to be there. That single decision cut our learning in half and diminished the networking we were able to do. The company thought the conference was nothing but a party. It may have been for those who spent all of their time in the halls. When you're learning from mentors and expanding your thinking, things are possible beyond your imagination. These six mentors helped my achieve levels bigger than I every dreamed. It is my hope that these nuggets spur some new ideas for you as well. DAN MILLER The first is the mentor who has influenced my life the longest. Dan Miller's book and podcast "48 Days To The Work You Love" inspired me to follow my dream and start my own business. Dan is author of the New York Times best-selling 48 Days To The Work You Love and Wisdom Meets Passion, No More Dreaded Monday and An Understanding Heart. His 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 1% of all podcasts worldwide and his 48DaysEagles.com community is viewed as an example around the world for those seeking to find – or create – the work and the life they love. His podcast sits at the center of his multiple streams of income. Unfortunately, we lost Dan in January of this year after a very brief battle with cancer. Dan's attitude through that entire struggle was impressive and uplifting. He kept asking as he always did, "What does this make possible?" Dan saw the silver lining in every cloud. MARC MAWHINNEY The next mentor who has been a big influence on me over the past decade and 500 episodes was one of my very first coaches. Marc Mawhinney is a lifelong entrepreneur who helps coaches get more clients without paid advertising! He achieves this with his coaching programs, his podcast Natural Born Coaches, his Facebook group The Coaching Jungle, and his Secret Coach Club. Marc has been a speaker at events like Social Media Marketing World, frequently makes media appearances and contributes for Entrepreneur.com. He is a master at joint venture partnerships. I discovered Marc through his Coaching Jungle Facebook group and he soon became my coach. He taught me the power of sending a daily email. Not only did I participate in her giveaway, Cindy soon became my next coach and she's one of the best in the business. Cindy guides entrepreneurs and small business owners to thrive as you go up the ladder from being the best-kept secret to Trusted and In-Demand Authority. She has been coaching since 2009. Through our work together, Cindy taught me the power of visibility, how to use giveaways to grow my list, and ways to partner with others.  She is simply an all around great person. This one event changed my business more than I could ever have imagined. At the time, Collaborate was run by Iman Aghay and Rich German. Iman has been so influential in so many aspects of my business. Through this event, Iman taught me how to properly joint venture with others. He has taught me how to create my courses and events. More importantly, Iman showed my how to sell what I do. Iman Aghay is a serial entrepreneur, international speaker, and a nine-time #1 best-selling author. He is best known as the co-founder of Actionera, a platform that assists experts in building mobile apps to enhance their income and impact. Iman hasn't been on the podcast. JIM PADILLA While I was attending one of the Collaborate events, Iman invited a guest speaker to that event. That guest talked a lot about actually making sales. He was Jim Padilla and he is my fifth mentor on this journey. Jim is a Global Impact Strategist & Investor and the founder and CEO of Gain The Edge. It's a done-for-you provider of industry-leading sales systems and unicorn sales professionals. Jim co-heads Gain the Edge with his amazing wife, Cyndi Padilla. The two of them have generated over quarter billion dollars in sales for a long line of high-level entrepreneurs. Jim's mission is to help purpose-driven thought-leaders untangle themselves from the day-to-day minutiae of seeking leads and sales, so they're free to amplify their impact - while scaling their business! Shortly after getting into Jim's world, he became my coach. Jim helps me build my sales systems and strategies. I've gone from being an entrepreneur to actually running a business. In 2013 I was writing articles about podcasting for New Media Expo. Out of the blue, I got an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He was interested in having a conversation to see how we might support each other. During that conversation, Dave said he loved my articles. Then he asked why I didn't have a podcast of my own. Great question, Dave. If I'm writing about podcasting, shouldn't I have a show of my own. Shortly after that conversation, this show was born. And our friendship has continued over the years. Dave Jackson launched the School of Podcasting in 2005. He was inducted into the Podcasting Hall of Fame in 2018. He is the author of the book, Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. Over the years he has launched over 30 different podcasts with over 4 million downloads. When it comes to growing your podcast and building your business, a joint venture partnership is a powerful way to find success. Many people view a JV partnership in a very simplistic way. The most common JV partnership is an agreement to promote a product or service in exchange for an affiliate commission. But, there are many other ways to leverage a JV partnership. Why would people want to promote you? This is a common question, especially if you have a small audience or small email list. There are various reasons, and money is only one of them. PARTNERSHIP FOR MONEY Money is surely one motivation for promotion. This is what most people think of when they hear JV partnership. In this agreement, you would provide your promotional partner an affiliate link through your system like ThriveCart. You can see the power of ThriveCart at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/ThriveCart. Your partner promotes your offer using their affiliate link. When their audience makes a purchase through your link, your partner earns a commission on the sale. You can also created a simple referral system if you're a coach. In this system, your partner would send an introductory email to you and the person they are referring to you. If that person signs up for your coaching, you can pay your referral partner a referral fee. This method requires a little more manual work, but you don't need a lot of software to help you set it up. Just track it with a spreadsheet. YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY The second reason people would promote you is because they love you. Your friends and family would be willing to promote you, because they want to see you succeed. Reach out to the people you know who also know others who could be your ideal client. Ask if they will help you spread the word. YOUR CONTENT People may want to promote you, because they love what you do. Your superfans love to be part of a winning team. When Alex Hormozi launched his new book “$100M Leads”, he had thousands of people promoting him. These people received a bonus chapter of the book when they hit a threshold. Alex's partners weren't in it for the money. They just loved what Alex teaches and wanted to be part of something exciting. He simply empowered his superfans to spread the word. PARTNERSHIP SWAPS The next reason people might promote you is for exchange of promotions. Partners will often promote you in exchange for promoting them. Sometimes, your list isn't big enough to match your partner's list. How can you give equal exchange? My tech guy wanted to be part of an AI summit. Unfortunately, he didn't have an email list largest enough to qualify. My tech guy came to me and offered some services in exchange for using my list. I will email about the summit to fulfill his obligation to the summit. In exchange, I will receive some tech work. He will promote the summit. In exchange, he will get exposure to the summit audience to promote his services. Get creative with your partnerships. ASSOCIATION PARTNERSHIP That other reason people might promote you is for association. These people may want to gain the credibility just by being associated with you. I volunteered as the Dean of Podcasting in Dan Miller's 48 Days Eagles community. I happily offered value in the community and promoted it whenever I could. The biggest benefit I received was being associated with Dan. He was a great man, and I was honored to be part of his world. Find people who want to be in your world. WAYS TO PROMOTE There are a variety of ways people can promote you and you can promote others when you create a partnership. The easiest way is to feature them on your podcast and get on their show. This is the best way to grow your audience. Podcast listeners listen to podcasts. Get on other shows. Cross promotion is the second way to promote each other. This can be in exchange for money as described before. It could also be simple exposure. In a cross-promotion, I could mail your lead magnet offer to my email list. In exchange, you could email my offer to your list. No money exchanges hands. It's a simple promotion. Next, you could use gift giveaways in your partnership. A giveaway is a collection of gifts contributed by a group of experts. Each expert emails their list a link to the giveaway for the free gifts. As people visit the giveaway page, the giveaway host grows her list by people opting in for the giveaway. Contributors grow their email lists by people opting in for their gift. Many times there is a fee to participate in a giveaway. It is nominal, but usually worth it to grow your email list. I love using summits as a way to create partnerships. This is like a series of webinars centered around a theme, but each expert doesn't sell anything. They simply offer free gifts to build their email lists. Live events can also be used in a partnership. This is similar to a summit. It's just live. You can appear on my stage in exchange for a fee or promoting the event. One way to monetize your podcast is through joint venture or JV partnerships. When partners help each others grow and market, your audience and business can rapidly hit new levels. A joint venture in business is different than a JV partnership in online marketing and business. THE JV DIFFERENCE In business, a joint venture is a business entity that is created by two or more parties, generally characterized by shared ownership, shared returns and risks, and shared governance. Companies will typically create a joint venture for one of four different reasons. The businesses might look to gain access a new market. A joint venture could help the businesses gain scale efficiencies by combining assets and operations. This relationship could help share risk for major investments or projects. The companies might want to access skills and capabilities of the other company. When it comes to online marketing JV partnerships, some of these reasons hold true, but not all. For infopreneurs, the definition is a little more broad and loosly defined. A marketing JV partnership in online business typically involves two or more parties pooling their resources and expertise to achieve a particular goal. The risks and rewards of the enterprise are also typically shared. In these cases, ownership and governance is typically NOT shared like it is with traditional business. ONLINE JV As a podcaster, you might promote a product or service from an expert. With an affiliate agreement, you would earn a commission with each sale. This is a straight up affiliate relationship. When you are a joint venture partner, you take the relationship a little further. This JV partnership might include an interview on your podcast, an appearance on your partner's summit or a co-promoted webinar. A JV relationship is a deeper partnership than a standard affiliate relationship. You could promote Amazon products on your podcast. There are many affiliate products to promote from sites like ClickBank or JVZoo. You typically won't interview the owners of these products. You simply promote and earn a commission. If you attend an online event intended to meet partners such as Collaborate (www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/collaborate), you create a relationship where you each help each other reach their goals. JV EXAMPLE For instance, I met Steve Eriksen at Collaborate. Steve runs Midlife Solopreneur at www.MidlifeSolopreneur.com. He helps and supports solopreneurs with mindset, marketing, sales and much more. As Steve and I became JV partners, I promoted his summit. He invited me to appear on his summit. I interviewed him on my podcast. He promoted my last webinar. Steve is now helping me build my next giveaway. Along the way, Steve earned a commission from my courses that sold through his affiliate link with me. I earned commissions from his courses that sold through my affiliate link with him. But it was more than just affiliate sales. It was a partnership. We helped each other get exposure. I have met dozens of partners through Collaborate in this way. I've mentioned a few there with Steve. Podcast interviews, summits, and giveaways. You could also speak at events, host a webinar together, include each other in newsletters or blog posts, shoot video together, create a product together, provide coaching for the other's mastermind group, provide content for your partner's membership site and a variety of other ways. The key to a great JV partnership is being open-minded. If you are willing to talk, brainstorm and try things, you'll find success. The first idea typically doesn't work. Marc's Journey Marc went through 2 business closures in less than 4 years. Out of that challenge, came the opportunity to become a coach. Through his podcast and thriving Facebook group, Marc has become an influencer. Your influencer marketing story Marc's primary way to connect with influencers is his podcast, Natural Born Coaches. As an influencer, Marc decides who to connect with based on: How much he trusts the person and how authentic he or she seems to be How much the other person supports his business How customized their first attempt to connect is Whether their request has a specific objective (rather than a broad "get-to-know-you" interaction) Marc also feels compelled to support those who join his products and programs, and those who show commitment to applying what he teaches. What has worked best to build and nurture your network? Marc's podcast allows him to initiate the connections, and he continues to promote their appearances in the long term. He clearly communicates what he can and cannot do to support a connection. He enters all relationships with a long-term approach in mind. Worst influencer marketing moment Marc assumed that one of his contacts had created a high-quality product, so he didn't check it out before putting it out to his community. The product ended up not meeting the expectations of Marc's audience, so now Marc carefully screens products/offers before agreeing to promote them. Also, Marc recommends to never make a decision under pressure to collaborate with a connection.
