Dr. Laura Froyen joins me again to chat about the power of taking time for yourself. As moms and caregivers, it's easy to get caught up in taking care of everyone else's needs. But what about our own?  Laura shares her perspective on why retreats like my annual Vibrant Happy Women Retreat are so rejuvenating. Getting away allows us to get out of the deep end and stop treading water - to rest, reconnect with ourselves, broaden our views, and realign our inner compass.  In our conversation, Laura reflects on how attending retreats has helped her rediscover her own identity beyond motherhood. We also talk about why time away is healthy for partnerships, allowing spouses and kids to step up at home.  I hope Laura's wisdom inspires you to prioritize self-care, whether through travel or simple moments of solitude. As she reminds us - we need time to just be, free from others' demands. It's essential for living vibrantly and authentically.  And if you want to join us at this year's retreat in Mexico Feb 7-11th, visit JenRiday.com/retreat    In This Episode, You'll Discover... Why traveling without a spouse can be liberating and allow for powerful personal growth and self-discovery. An unexpected twist at the retreat that brought Laura newfound happiness and energy. The social, emotional, and spiritual value of solitude and the importance of nurturing your own identity outside of motherhood.  The unique way a retreat illuminates the path ahead for you.  The power of being embraced by a community of welcoming and kind-hearted women.  The importance of remembering what it's like to be an individual human being without anyone needing anything from you. And much more!   "It's okay to remember what it's like to be a whole and independent human being where no one else needs anything from you." - Jen Riday   Key Moments: [00:02:11] Losing ourselves in motherhood. [00:06:03] Getting out of the deep end. [00:11:30] Identity outside of parenthood. [00:14:10] Finding comfort in solitude. [00:20:42] Family dynamics and boundaries. [00:24:07] Taking time for oneself. [00:27:35] Sacred retreat for women. [00:32:07] Traveling solo and self-discovery. [00:36:47] Increasing enjoyment of parenting.   "We're more than just caregivers and wives and mothers and all the things we are. We're humans, really." - Laura Froyen   Resources: Join the Vibrant Happy Women Retreat, which offers a transformative experience and provides a container of time to listen to your thoughts and connect with women from different walks of life. A miscarriage, a huge Christmas Day fight, and the decision to make a change. Jen Riday was able to pivot and find her happiness as a married woman. Through her experience, she proves to us that if you're feeling stuck, divorce isn't always the answer. Maybe all you need is an intuitive hit and the mindfulness to create time for your self-care. Tune in to this episode on Choosing Your Happiness in Marriage with Jen Riday Key points covered in this episode:  ✔️ All you need is five minutes. Yoga is Jen Riday's choice of grounding activity. If you're scared of starting a new activity, remember that all good things are on the other side of fear. Your brain (and even your partner) will thank you for it. ✔️ Expand time. The more you believe you have time, the more it's true. Cut out activities that don't serve you. For Jen Riday, it's social media and streaming, unless it's with family. ✔️ Accept your partner's differences. They don't always have to enjoy the same things you do. But their presence and energy must transform you and allow you to live unapologetically YOU. Give each other the grace to let them be who they want to be. ✔️ How happy are you willing to let yourself feel? Your happiness is your responsibility, and you get to create it. Think of ways to make today great, and allow yourself to do it! ✔️ Happiness is the greatest gift you can give. If you can do the things that make you feel truly alive, it's not a selfish act – it's everything you need to share your vibrancy with the world. -------------------- Dr. Jen Riday is the founder of the Vibrant Happy Women movement, host of the Vibrant Happy Women Podcast, and mom of 6. Jen is a mom of six with a PhD in human development and family studies. Growing up in Iowa to farmer parents, Jen was often in charge of her younger brothers—even cooking meals by age 8. She kept the house running and constantly questioned whether her bedroom was clean enough. This, unsurprisingly, led to perfectionism and over-achieving (ahem, PhD and six kids!), so by her mid 30s she was massively burned out. “You deserve to be happy and fulfilled. If you can start to believe that, it will have a trickle-down effect on how you interact and how you hold boundaries.” —Jen Riday Join me for a conversation with Jen where she talks about the day she decided to be happy no matter what. It happened to be Christmas, but the gift she received was not joyous or expected. It did, however, set her down a path that led to where she is today: supporting women (mostly moms) who have lost themselves. She helps them take care of themselves and set healthy boundaries so they can realign their identity with who they really are. In addition to her Feel It To Heal It Method and BE HER Morning Ritual, Jen hosts a podcast to help women love their lives again. I would love to introduce you to one of my favorite podcasts. 3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms is hosted by Rachel Nielson, who is a lover of practical ideas, conversations with kindred spirits, and her two wild miracle children who keep life interesting. She combined all of these passions when creating her podcast. After a long fight to become a mother through adoption and IVF, Rachel truly believed that she would thrive as a mom from day one. Her transition into motherhood was a little bumpier than she had imagined, and she sought the help of professionals for actionable advice. 3 in 30 is a podcast for women who want to love motherhood as much as they love their children. Since moms are short on time and brain space, each 30-minute episode offers 3 actionable takeaways to help you make your family life a little better each week. If this sounds up your alley, listen to 3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms on your favorite podcast listening app.  In this excerpt, Rachel interviews Dr. Jen Riday about how to be a more emotionally-resilient mom. The takeaway you hear them discuss is the importance of boundaries. I hope you will listen and subscribe!

In this episode of Hidden Potential Podcast, Jen Riday talks about the importance of setting boundaries with our loved ones and friends. It's very easy to be affected by someone else's energy and to let them dictate how you will feel. This happens because a) you did not set specific boundaries in the relationship and b) you need to do some inner work to be the only one responsible for your happiness. In her podcast Vibrant Happy Women, Jen also talks about this concept, diving deep into the idea of ‘stuckness'. If you are feeling stuck and don't know the next step to take when it comes to your work or personal projects, it's important to sit with yourself, observe your feelings and thoughts, analyze what's going wrong and right, and then the decision will come easily. I can think of almost no other role in this life that requires as much emotional resilience as being a mom. Being a resilient mom means to be able to withstand or recover quickly from stress and challenges, and our roles as mothers give us plenty of opportunities every day to practice this skill. From enduring a whiny toddler hanging on your legs all day, to discovering upsetting texts on your teenager’s cell phone, to trying to meet a work deadline while also managing all of the moving parts of family life, to having a child scream at you that they hate you at the end of a long day…. Sometimes motherhood feels like a never-ending exercise in patience, grit, and self control. One thing I know for sure is that the more we become emotionally resilient moms, the easier it will be to handle all of the ups and downs of motherhood. And the good news is, emotional resilience is something that we can develop more of and get better at over time. Today’s guest is Dr. Jen Riday, a mom of 6 with a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies. She’s the host of the https://www.jenriday.com/podcast/ (Vibrant Happy Women Podcast) and her mission is to help busy moms get off the hamster wheel and find balance so they can be their best selves and love their lives again. Due to her mix of academic expertise and personal experience mothering a large family, Jen is uniquely qualified to teach practical tools that bridge the gap between research and "real life,” and I know my conversation with her today will give you a few practical ideas for how you can become a resilient mom in this important way. -3 Takeaways on how to become a more resilient momPractice holding space for yourself. This may sound like a bit of a nebulous concept, but I love the simple way that Jen defined it. She said it’s “giving myself space to understand what I think and what I feel.” We can hold space for ourselves by not overfilling our schedules, by creating a personal retreat within our homes, or developing a meaningful journaling or meditation practice that just gives us the chance to metabolize our experiences and learn from them. I love that Jen pointed out that holding space for yourself is true self-care. Feel it to heal it. The best way to process emotions is to “stick with them,” as Jen said, or in other words, stay in your body and notice them, name them, envision them, and breathe them in without judgement or overthinking. If you would like to dive more into this concept, I’d love to remind you about the episode I did with my counselor a few months ago called “How to Heal your Relationship with Food this Year. Create healthy boundaries. This is essential if you want to protect your ability to stay resilient--you have to know what you need emotionally and how to guard it, as well as know what is not your stuff to handle. Boundaries are what you will do to protect your needs, not what you expect others to do because as Jen said “I am responsible for MY thoughts, feelings and actions and NOT responsible for the thoughts, feelings and actions of another person."  >>>Did you relate to these tips on how to become a more resilient mom? Rachel Macy Stafford is the author of “Hands Free Life,” “Hands Free Mama,” “Only Love Today,” and the new “Live Love Now,” all books sharing Rachel's powerful message of how learning self-love is the inflection point for nearly every part of how we live our lives that brings us closer to or farther from joy.In this episode, Rachel discusses some of the most important points from “Live Love Now” and her research with children of all ages to discover how parents can heal and care for themselves to make their children feel truly loved. Key Takeaways:Self-awareness that leads to self-love is critical to healthier parenting, and must come first. Our parenting style is a product of our inner narratives, many unexamined thoughts we've carried for years. The ways in which we fail to love ourselves - being hypercritical, having unrealistic expectations, despising our weaknesses - become the unhealthy components of our parenting.Favorite Quotes:“The truth is not the end; the truth is the beginning.”“That part of us - our dreamer, our inner child - is still within reach.”“That life of selflessness came at such a cost that I was not just hurting myself, but my children.”“Awareness changes everything because then you can make a different choice.” Support:This podcast is made possible by you — our listeners all over the world — from Brazil to Australia, the USA to Singapore. In all honesty, I almost titled this episode, "How to Not Lose Your Shiz When Life Happens." I want you to tune in and know you're not alone in the feelings of panic, fear, anger, sadness or whatever else overwhelms you in this moment. And then, I want you to learn what you can do and how to stay calm in times of stress like these. Our returning guest, Jen Riday, is a mother of 6, podcaster and women's coach. She talks about her love of statistics, even spreadsheets, and routines that usually work for her. But given her personal experience with COVID-19, and a journey through all the stages of grief, Jen had to shift her routines. She is sharing the specific techniques that have allowed her to stay calm in these times of epic stress. If embracing the new normal, and even feeling like your self, has become a battle, tune in to this episode for some practical tips. Jen encourages us to identify our feelings, and feel them. Using B.O.L.D. meditation (a genius acronym!) in addition to her solid morning routine, she teaches how it's possible to find your calm and feel like yourself even in times of uncertainty and stress. About a few other things... My daughter used to struggle so much with math, it was often a battle to get her to finish her work. But for several months we've been using Revolution Math (paid for with my own money!) to provide her small group tutoring that she now actually looks forward to doing. Use code 'ABOUTPROGRESS' to get the starter kit and first month for only $1. With all this time we have been spending at home, some of my organization struggles have been on the forefront of my mind. In January I released an organization audio course to help you learn how to cut the clutter and find clarity. That is still available to you before prices go up May 1st. Episode 055. “Something that I’ve noticed with milestones... is that there’s a feeling of never enough-- never enough downloads; there are never enough episodes; there’s never enough content. And, at times, it can feel like a hamster wheel. And I think there’s a lot of pressure to continue producing content every week.” ~Melissa Guller, Everything is Teachable & Book Smart Happy end of the year, end of the decade, podcast listeners! As the days wind down, I thought this the perfect time to discuss milestone episodes. To be totally honest with you, I hadn’t given the topic much thought until the incredible Sarah Buino, host of Conversations With A Wounded Healer (and one of my clients) asked if I had any suggestions for marking her 100th episode. Ok then! Time to commence thinking about milestones! But where to start?  Listen, hitting publish on your first episode is just as much a milestone as posting your hundredth so don’t let numbers put you off. I chatted with several podcasters whose interpretations of what constitutes a milestone vary. Their advice, though, is essentially this: there’s no right or wrong way to mark your big achievement -- even if that means choosing not to acknowledge your show’s milestone at all.  Featuring: David Hooper, Julie Neale, Robyn Conley Downs, Melissa Guller, Dave Jackson, and Jen Riday.   Full Show Notes including guest links, podcasts & resources: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/podenvy055    Podcast Angel: Libsyn My preferred podcasting hosting company.   What a month!  Did you work on one or two habits this month?  I hope that everything we learned inspired you to narrow in your focus on one area of your life that needs some major help. Three experts in their fields gave real life tips on how to do this. As you know, for me that started with sleep.  Our sleep episodes with Chrissy Lawler (here and here) triggered so many people into realizing how much they needed to shift their sleep habits.  As a result, hundreds of you joined (and are still joining) our FREE 5 Day Sleep Makeover! Next, we considered what your motivational style might be (thank you Dr. Adam Moore) and how figuring that out will help propel you forward to better shifting your habits. And then a question that hits home for all of us, is time management a huuuuuuge struggle for you?  If so, you need to let things go.  Dr. Jen Riday gave thousands of you some lightbulb moments as you listened in about her own experience. For example, she discussed taking more time for herself--both for self-care and planning--as well as letting go of things that didn't line up with her greater priorities. Personal stories of growth from me and you! And don't forget about our growth spurt episodes! In these bite-sized episodes I got personal about my experience as an underachieving perfectionists and how to get out of your comfort zones. Today, we released our Dear Progressor episode.  You get to hear a follow-up from a former voice bite with an update, how one mom learned to get herself to sleep, an unsolicited testimonial of the Progress Program, a mom who realized the life she was living was THE dream-life she had had for herself 10 years prior, and what one busy mama of five has done to calm her busy-mind.  I also share where I'm at with my Do Something List and some final thoughts I have about habit-formation and how that relates to our themes. And remember, it's not too late if you haven't started yours yet--just go for it! This has definitely been a month of growth and I'm so grateful you were a part of it by showing up here and sharing what you learned with others, both publicly and privately.  Thank you SOOO much for supporting me and the members of this community.

This week is a huge milestone as we are celebrating the 100th episode of the Moms With Dreams Show! I’ve been anticipating this day for several weeks now. I remember when I started my podcast back in May 2015. Producing one show per week felt like an eternity away from 100, but now it’s finally here! Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard from other podcasters that I am the exception in the industry – that most podcasts don’t make it past 20 episodes, let alone reach 100! I had no idea since all the podcasts that I listen to are successful with hundreds of episodes. This conversation was my reminder to stop and acknowledge myself for making it this far – something that I often forget to do. Instead of interviewing a guest or teaching a lesson, I invited my listeners and previous guests to join me in this episode. After my extended introduction, you’ll hear audio clips of them sharing a few words about the show. I am grateful for my community and want you to have access to these wonderful people. Below you’ll find their names, a brief bio, contact information and a link to their episode if they were a guest. In this episode, I gave a shout out to John Bukenas, my podcast producer. Jen Riday is the host of a podcast called Vibrant Happy Women, and she is the epitome of that name! Ladies, be aware that major creative and special sparks flew during this episode. The synergy that can happen on a podcast interview is kind of amazing. I LOVED Jen when she interviewed me on her podcast, and loved her even more when I had the chance to chat with her for an episode of MY podcast! She is a remarkable insightful woman and you would be smart to follow her podcast as well as this one. We talked a lot about motherhood and how imperative it is that we create joy in the center of our homes. I LOVED how she compared mothers to the sun, with planets- our kids and spouses- orbiting around us, and how if we are happy it effects that orbit and energy. It's the phrase, happy wife happy life, right? But a lot more spectacular than that. The best thing that happened on this episode was the validation of how IMPORTANT it is to take care of myself before I can take care of my family. Following my dreams, passions and desires only makes me better, it doesn't take away that love I have for my children! Meditation is something I have been thinking about, as well as this craving for yoga, and Jen brought all of it right to me with her belief that an hour of yoga is as good as weekend away. Thank you Jen for having such a great conversation with me, sharing your insight as a mother of 6 children and proponent of happiness and vibrance!

How to Walk Away from the To Do List – with Jen Riday

I start this episode with some ideas about something I call a ‘Why Not List’. Kind of like a To Do List, but infinitely more joyful. Because if you’re like me, that relentless taskmaster is always keeping score of what we get done.  So this is a sweet way around that heavy burden.  I’ll also be interviewing popular happiness podcaster Jen Riday on this hot topic: ‘If mom ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy’ …  Jen reminded me of this old phrase in telling her story. She’s a mother of six (yes … six!) who does not send her children to daycare. And yet she still has a flourishing career as a happiness coach and podcaster. So how the heck does Jen do this?  The key, she says, is getting clear about the things that are important to us. After getting her PhD, she had a clarifying thought: “How would I like my children to remember me? Will it be as a frustrated, grumpy mom with a big to do list … or will it be as a move involved, more present parent?”  So Jen’s self-care efforts shifted accordingly. This included no longer baking six to twelve loves of home baked bread per week, but instead, spending more quality time with her kids. And still keeping her head on straight with hot yoga and all sorts of self-care. Which is exactly what made me want to speak with her!  Here’s what I learned from Jen:   Multi-tasking … does it hurt or help happiness? Words that keep teenagers in line … The one moment practice that can help you get back to peace and serenity How connecting to a Higher Power supports letting go Achieving the balance between doing and being How children keep you grounded in reality How our values intersect with our happiness A useful exercise for defining your values What strong boundaries are and how to keep them How do our schedules get so out of control The best 5 minute mood-bosting exercise that exists (even for your kegels!) How she knew she needed greater self-care BIO Jen Riday is the host of the Vibrant Happy Women Podcast, and speaks and writes about how women can find greater light and meaning – regardless of their circumstances – through meditation, listening to intuition or a Higher Power, letting go of the “shoulds” and filling their cups. She believes every woman on this planet has something special to contribute to the world and will be happiest when she is living true to her purpose.
