Revolutionary Sistas of the Diaspora Black and Brown Sistas coming together to discuss topical issues of race, social & economic justice, gender equality and everything in between. The rates of incidences of breast cancer and domestic violence are staggering, especially as it relates to the black and brown community. For example, according to the Sloane Epidemiology Center Black women have a 42% higher rate of death than white women and the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society Latina women were diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age and with later-stage breast disease. Regarding domestic violence, the National Center on Violence in the Black Community reports that black women are about 13% of the U.S. population but they are about half of female homicide victims. And the National Latina Network states that 1 in 3 Latinas have experience domestic violence. These statistics should alarm us all and we will address both issues in our conversation this week. The Revolutionary Sistas of the Diaspora are Black and Brown Sistas coming together to discuss topical issues of race, social & economic justice, gender equality and everything in between. Our dads have a special place in our hearts, and a pivotal role in our homes. Last month we honored moms, so this month we wanted to focus on the most important male relationship in a woman’s life –her father. In the best case, he models the love that a woman needs in her life. But when that bond is broken or missing, it creates a void in the family – for daughters and sons alike. Men sometimes get a bad rap in communities of color. But there are many, many brothers who do all the right things for their families, and we want to honor them. Are you a father? We want to hear from you! What are the joys and challenges in being a dad? Whether you are a woman or man, join the conversation about fatherhood. We will host an on air "open mic" session and we encourage everyone to call and join the conversation, or share personal reflections, poetry or song. Call in with your dad on the line! Shout him out and tell her why you love him. Share a memory about your dearly departed father. Have some real talk about broken bonds to create space for forgiveness and healing. We're looking forward to sharing space with You! Open Phone Lines: Dial-in with a funny story; a situation where he made you mad; what he taught you; what you miss most about him; or what do you enjoy most about your relationship now that you are an adult. Topic: Raise Your Standards And FulFill Your Destiny When you have high standards, you expect to be treated with the highest regard. However, when your standards are low, you will often accept things how they are. Furthermore, you may even allow others to walk all over you, which is a clear indication that you’re struggling with low self-esteem. When you have low standards, you will often fall prey to other people’s influence. This happens because you fail to stand up for yourself — you fail to stand up for your principles and beliefs. This show will focus on the importance of raising your standards to achieve success, and to fulfill your destiny. Topic: Toxic People: How to Identify Them and How to Deal With Them We have all had toxic people dust us with their poison. Sometimes it’s more like a drenching. Difficult people are drawn to the reasonable ones and all of us have likely had (or have) at least one person in our lives who have us bending around ourselves like barbed wire in endless attempts to please them – only to never really get there. Their damage lies in their subtlety and the way they can engender that classic response, ‘It’s not them, it’s me.’ They can have you questioning your ‘over-reactiveness’, your ‘oversensitivity’, your ‘tendency to misinterpret’. If you’re the one who’s continually hurt, or the one who is constantly adjusting your own behaviour to avoid being hurt, then chances are that it’s not you and it’s very much them. Being able to spot their harmful behavior is the first step to minimizing their impact. You might not be able to change what they do, but you can change what you do with it, and any idea that toxic somebody in your life might have that they can get away with it.
