I cannot imagine how frightening and shocking it must feel to be diagnosed with cancer. Not only are you needing to process your diagnosis but, then you are told by your specialist that the cancer treatment options available have the potential to often harm healthy tissue while treating a cancerous tumour. What I learnt recently from spending time with Crystal at Blue Dot Army is that there is a new type of radiation treatment available that can treat many types of tumours in the prostate, spine, brain, lungs, pancreas, head and neck which is so accurate & precise in the delivering of radiation that it can target & kill cancerous cells in real time while minimalizing radiation exposure to healthy tissues and organs that leads to less painful side effects & is extremely effective in treating cancer. Giving HOPE to people when they need it the most. Today on MediTalk we are speak with Peter Podias the Clinical Operations Director & a highly experienced Radiation Therapist at 5D clinic in Perth to learn all about CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery. A big thank you to Peter for sharing his knowledge with us all today on Meditalk. To learn more about 5D Clinic visit: 5DClinics.com.au

Did you know this week is 'World Continence Week'? It's time for us all to ask ourselves the following questions: Do you have to rush to use the toilet? Are you frequently nervous at the thought that you might lose control of your bladder or bowel? Do you wake up twice or more during the night to go to the toilet? Incontinence is defined as any accidental or involuntary loss of urine, bowel motion, or wind. Incontinence can affect children and adults of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds. If you would have told me in January this year that by March people all around the world would be affected by a virus from a bat. Whereby, hundreds of thousands of lives would be lost and people’s livelihoods taken away from them and life as we know it would be significantly changed - I just wouldn’t have believed you! Some days it just feels so surreal that in such a short period of time human beings all around the world are experiencing so much change to our day to day lives, all at the same time. Well today on Meditalk I speak with Dr Astrid Arellano an Infectious Disease Specialist at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco, who will help us make sense of it all and provide us with some much needed practical advice & share her knowledge on what we now call COVID-19. Since COVID-19 we now see people at the shops wearing masks and gloves - should we all be doing this? And when you go to the shops can you become infected by COVID-19 buy handling of fruit, vegetables and items from the shelf & from the shopping trolley? Can we contract COVID-19 from our online deliveries? Can we contract COVID-19 from other animals like the family dog? Can you suffer from COVID-19 twice? Should we be having the flu shot this year? What is the treatment for COVID-19? How long before a vaccine? Why are some people suffering mild symptoms of COVID-19 and other people are fighting for their life in ICU? When will this virus end? If you want to attain some quality and practical information on COVID-19 please take the time to listen to Dr Arellano answer these questions and many more. A big thank you to St John of God Hospital in Subiaco and Dr Arellano for all your support in co-ordinating this special episode of Meditalk. In December 2017 in Australia, the Cervical Screening Test replaced what we commonly call the Pap Test. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers women can die from and a routine cervical screening test can save a woman’s life. Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV; this is the biggest risk factor for cervical cancer. So it is really important we screen for HPV in healthy women through a cervical screening test. Today on Meditalk I speak with Dr Stuart Salfinger who is a Gynaecologic Oncologist to talk about Cervical Screening. Dr Stuart Salfinger informs us on what changes were made to the national cervical screening program, how the changes in the program effect women, how a cervical screening test differs from a pap test and what exactly is involved. Education and effective screening programs are key to preventing diseases such as; cervical cancer. In this MeditalkPodcast episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Rebecca Ray a Clinical Psychologist, Speaker & Author about vicarious trauma and the art of self-kindness. Kindness is defined as having qualities of friendliness, generosity and consideration. And having a genuine concern and care for others. In fact, science has shown that by devoting resources to others, rather than for oneself can enhance one's well-being. Rebecca's most recent book the Art of Self-Kindness is one of the most beautiful books I have read for a very long time as it talks to the heart of the importance of how giving to yourself needs to be made a priority for a healthy mind and soul. I also asked Dr Rebecca Ray to talk about vicarious trauma as with Australians recently suffering in the last year from such devastating droughts & bushfires learning about this form of trauma may help people to emotionally heal from witnessing and living through very challenging times in our life. I hope you learn and enjoy as much as did from this conversation with Dr Rebecca Ray - a very wise, kind and talented soul - thank you! According to Diabetes Australia, 280 Australians develop diabetes every day which equates to one person every 5 minutes. In 2017-2018 approximately 1 million Australian adults had type 2 diabetes. Being overweight does in fact increase your risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes. Based on a number of significiant trials that have been published over the years Endocrinologists who medically take care of many diabetic patients as well as, GPs are now considering and discussing with people who are struggling with their weight and suffering type 2 diabetes a referral to seek the specialist advice of a bariatric surgeon to see if weightloss surgery is a possible treatment option for helping people lose significant amounts of weight which in turn greatly assists in people being able to manage their type 2 diabetes. So today, I speak with Dr Jon Armstrong a Bariatric, General and Endocrine Surgeon about treating type 2 diabetes with weight-loss surgery. Dr Armstrong sheds light on this topic to help to inform people when they are perhaps considering weight-loss surgery as an option to better manage their diabetes. With obesity on the rise in our community there are more health campaigns than ever encouraging both adults and children to participate in physical activity. Being active is not only good for our bodies but has also been found to be a wonderful stress reliever and is one of the best ways of taking care of our mind and spirit. However, studies have shown that as more people participate in sports it has led to an increase in sporting injuries. Have you ever been asked to be in a clinical trial? Have you ever wondered what is involved in a clinical trial? Clinical trials help to determine whether new and existing medicines and medical practices are safe and effective in treating particular diseases and conditions. And even though medicines are tested thoroughly in laboratories human clinical trials assist doctors to further better understand if the new medicines being offered are any better than older ones as well as, they can help to determine correct dosages of medicine to optimise treatment regimes. Today on Meditalk I speak with Professor Steve Webb an Intensivist and Director of Clinical Trials at St John of God Hospital Subiaco so we all can learn more about what is involved in clinical trials and why they are so important to advancing medical care and treatment. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Australia. According to the Cancer Council, it is responsible for almost one in five people dying of cancer in Australia. Very sadly there is often a stigma associated with lung cancer that it is a cancer only associated with smoker’s and that they bring it upon themselves. Well one of the key lessons learnt from this interview is that many people that are diagnosed with lung cancer have never touched a cigarette in their life. So in order to attain a better understanding on Lung Cancer I speak with Dr Tim Clay who is a Medical Oncologist specialising in lung and breast cancer at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco. Dr Clay provides us with a great overview of lung cancer but, he also gives an excellent update on current research and treatment of this disease. According to Quit Australia if you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, or have a cigarette in the first half hour after waking up, you are considered a person who has an addition to nicotine.
