Dr Stephanie Doig is a BRILLIANT Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with anxious children and teens and their families. In this fascinating, helpful and practical conversation, Stephanie explains:- why there has been an increase in anxious children- how to recognise whether your child is anxious- what's "normal" behaviour versus what requires intervention- how to best navigate tricky moments with your children- how to support yourself when you haven't parented in the way you'd ideally like- how her upcoming app (launching in early 2026) can help children and parents to feel better and keep moving forwardsAnd I also use the example of my second son, Ralph, and his tricky eating, to show how it's not what our kids are doing that's necessarily the problem but what we make it mean about ourselves, and how our mindset is a huge opportunity for parenting in a more supportive and empowered way. Peter Doig talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Doig, who was born in Edinburgh in 1959 but grew up in Trinidad and Canada, has created a relentlessly inventive and evolving body of paintings over the past 40 years. Informed by memory, by Doig's own photographs and found images, by an intimate knowledge and interpretation of art history, by a profound response to place and architecture, and by images and moods evoking diverse cultural forms beyond visual art, his works possess a poetic and sonorous sense of feeling and atmosphere. Often realised over many years, each painting is unique rather than part of a series, even if it shares recurring iconography with other pieces. Fundamentally concerned with figuration, Doig draws on a vast range of painterly approaches from resonant stains to thick impasto, stretching his medium to its full expressive potential and into the realms of abstraction. He has said that he wants painting to be a world unto itself and perhaps no other artist of the past few decades has created such a distinctive language for achieving that aim. Indeed, so widespread is his influence that one might describe a painterly strand in recent art around the globe as Doigian. Across his career, Peter's work has been informed by a passionate engagement with music. He has said: “Music, being an invisible art form, is open to interpretation within the mind's eye, and reflections from the mind's eye are often what I'm attempting to depict in my work.” He achieves a particular tonality and ambience that evoke his aspiration to the condition of that artform, a factor emphasised in House of Music, the exhibition at the Serpentine South until 8 February 2026. He discusses several of the paintings in that show in depth, and reflects on his changing response to Trinidad, where he was based between 2002 and 2019, and his references in the paintings to the “residues of imperialism”. Among much else, he discusses the early influence of Edward Burra, his enduring fascination with Henri Matisse, his response to early graffiti art in New York, and his current fascination with Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist (1608). He talks about his friendship and collaboration with the poet Derek Walcott and the importance to his work of STUDIOFILMCLUB, the repertory cinema he founded in his Port of Spain studio with Che Lovelace. Plus, he gives insight into his life in the studio, and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: “what is art for?”Peter Doig: House of Music, Serpentine South, London, until 8 February 2026. There are a number of Sound Service events on Sundays through the length of the exhibition, as well as other evening sessions. Visit serpentinegalleries.org to find out more. Hosted on Acast. A History of the Church through its Buildings (Oxford University Press, 2021) by Allan Doig takes the reader to meet people who lived through momentous religious changes in the very spaces where the story of the Church took shape. Buildings are about people, the people who conceived, designed, financed, and used them. Their stories become embedded in the very fabric itself, and as the fabric is changed through time in response to changing use, relationships, and beliefs, the architecture becomes the standing history of passing waves of humanity. This process takes on special significance in churches, where the arrangement of the space places members of the community in relationship with one another for the performance of the church's rites and ceremonies. Moreover, architectural forms and building materials can be used to establish relationships with other buildings in other places and other times. Coordinated systems of signs, symbols, and images proclaim beliefs and doctrine, and in a wider sense carry extended narratives of the people and their faith. Looking at the history of the church through its buildings allows us to establish a tangible connection to the lives of the people involved in some of the key moments and movements that shaped that history, and perhaps even a degree of intimacy with them. Standing in the same place where the worshippers of the past preached and taught, or in a space they built as a memorial, touching the stone they placed, or marking their final resting-place, holding a keepsake they treasured or seeing a relic they venerated, probably comes as close to a shared experience with these people as it is possible to come. Perhaps for a fleeting moment at such times their faces may come more clearly into focus. Doug Ryan, CEO of Arineta, describes the advancements in cardiac CT imaging technology and how their ultra-fast scanning is revealing more accurate and higher-quality imaging of the heart. Using wide-area coverage and deep learning image reconstruction, the Arineta platform can detect arterial occlusions and coronary plaque buildup, which is a significant risk factor for sudden cardiac events and is often missed when relying solely on calcium scoring. The development of a mobile cardiac CT scanning unit is improving access to this technology, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Doig explains, "What you're trying to do is to stop the most complex organ inside the human body. The human heart translates, rotates, and beats somewhere between 60 and 100 beats per minute. So you really need advanced CT technology that comprises a great many areas, but the most important things are coverage speed and the ability to reconstruct it very quickly." "You're using advanced algorithms like our DLIR, our deep learning image reconstruction, which focuses on high-contrast, high-spatial, low-noise reconstructions that can then be put into what we call a multiplanar format. So you can look at these coronary arteries from all angles and do the diagnostic." "So it's actually a combination of several things. Ultra FAST is, of course, very important because you are literally trying to stop a bird mid-flight and get an accurate picture of it, but it's also the ability to encompass and see the entire heart in a single rotation. So, one of the secrets of the SpotLight and SpotLight Duo is both the ultra-fast rotation and the wide area coverage that we get with our detector system." #Arineta #CTImaging #CardiovascularDiagnostics #Cardiology #DeepLearningImageReconstruction   Arineta.com Download the transcript here

Watching finals from the side-lines, celebrating award winners and saying goodbye to purple soldiers. This emotional roller coaster can get knotted! Time to Restump Podcast the assortment of sentiment. As Fremantle fans, you'd think we'd be acclimatised to watching September from the side-lines… I mean we've done it 22 times in the last 30 years! But watching the finals this year and knowing how close we were to being a part of it… we've developed an itch that needs a scratch! We need a fix; we need a September transfusion; we need a finals injection to get the purple bloodstream pumping! But we'll bide our time, do the hard yards once again and hope this time next year outcomes will be different. Meanwhile, again at this time of year, we have to undertake the unenviable task of waving goodbye to numerous Docker diehards that dug deep over the duration. We sadly say sayonara and send off soldiers some who never saw any action, all of them devoid of September success. The often unjustly maligned Matty Taberner, the ever-ready Ethan Hughes, the always jovial Josh Corbett, the sky scraping Sebit Kuek and the couldn't quite get there Conrad Williams. All five deserve gratitude, but especially Tabs and Hughesy. They got everything out of themselves, emptied their tanks, they were part of the journey and played vital roles at times. Thanks fellas and enjoy whatever comes next in life.To move to a brighter note we celebrated the Doig medal awards last night. Now it is safe to say it wasn't exactly a short a night and awards weren't rare. And not to diminish the attached prestige to any accolade, but it seemed if you attended the gala and went home without some sort of medal or acknowledgement, you were stiff! But there is a lot to be said for professionalism and attention to detail and it was truly a magnificent night. If only we could be as thorough on the field as we were off it! There were no surprises, Caleb Serong and Andy Brayshaw were always going to deservedly quinella the Doig and it was just a matter of which order. The only shock that could have occurred on the night was if Josh Corbett didn't win the best good bloke award! Never going to happen.Josh Draper won the “stood out like a Beacon for all the right reasons” award. It was great to see, it was thoroughly deserved and we're all pretty excited for him and us going forward.Lukey Ryan won the Mi Casa Property Boutique Award. He got the most wins for metres gained in a single quarter, more than any other player. Don't quote me on it as it hasn't been confirmed... but I think he wins a house, courtesy of the magnificent Mi Casa crew.Awards, delistings, finals, trades… plenty of purple to prattle on about. So, if you're in need of a dose of docker drivel, drag up a davenport, dial in and dwell on our dubious determinations. Enough of the nonsensical alphabet games… let's get into it! A Doig medal, an All Australian, a Simpson medal and lead DJ at Covid Club 150. Time to Restump Podcast Lukey Ryan's 150th in the demolition of the Dees. The defensively versatile Luke Ryan has put together a remarkable 150 games and played them at a ridiculously consistent high-end level. He's been the mainstay, showing incredible durability, playing 150 of a possible 160 games since his debut in 2017, and at 28 years of age, there's another 100+ games in him yet.His services were barely required Sunday as we tore a hapless Melbourne Demons team apart in the middle, softening the reliance on the defensive unit. Without a Max Gawn and a Christian Petracca, there was little to no resistance in the midfield and around the ground at stoppages. While without any doubt we performed superbly, producing a connectivity enabling chains of play we have only dreamt of and been striving for, our lack of an opponent had some say in it. There is something that is just not cricket at Melbourne. We took 21 marks inside 50 and our average prior to the game was 12. A total of 24%, nearly one in every four of our marks were inside 50! That is an insane stat. We usually go around the 12%, or one in 8 or 9 marks inside 50.We went +31 in the clearances when we average +7 all year. Centre clearances we were +9 and we usually go around +2.4 mark. The Dees had a Jack Viney and a Clayton Oliver in there. They rolled Trent Rivers and Tom Sparrow through there. These are far from fringe players so there is plenty of merit in our performance. But you don't put up numbers like we did against these types if there aren't additional underlying issues. Max Gawn and Christian Petracca are influential greats but they weren't that big of a difference. Something is a tad off at Demon land. But we got to play our game and hone our drills. We banked another four points and added 3% which may or may not end up vital. Top 4 is ours if we want it. It was magnificent to see what is now the full-blown arrival of Josh Treacy. Lets remember, while the Dees were off in the middle they still had a Steven May and a Jake Lever. Neither of them caused Treacy any grief.Message sending Sonny Walters was back causing havoc and putting in a complete and well-rounded game. Never write off champions!  I'm willing to bet right now that Andy Brayshaw is a shoe-in for next captain. He's back to his 2022 best, with big moment and game influential acts. If anyone wants that bet, get in touch with me!It was one of those one in all in, same page, individual role playing performances that produces stunning results. The Dees may not have put the pressure on us but its still a win we should take great confidence out of.The injury to the captain is a devastating one and hasn't arrived at the ideal time. He was in scintillating form and leaves shoes impossible to fill. Lets hope the time frame is good news. While we sit in the top 4, we are only a game and a half out of 9th. So, the words 'No Complacency' should be put in bold on the white board down at Cockburn this week, as we head towards the derby! We ran into a few time hurdles so the Mi Casa Property Boutique Metres Gained competition didn't get up last weekend. It'll return for the Derby. It was a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch but it's an interesting game to assess. Ross Lyon's “never as good or as bad” line seems highly appropriate.Anyway, let's get into a bit more depth on the pod and see what noisy nonsense eventuates.Support the Show.

We must strengthen the Ubulus and upper Dorsinus muscles if we want to be kind of a big deal. Head anchorman JL is leading by example challenging the boys to come back in tip top shape. Time to Restump Podcast all the goings on in purple. The season that promised so much delivered little but, in review, there was a lot to take out of it in a positive sense. Wins away from home against quality opposition will do a group of kids no end of good. Getting 20+ games into and 40+ goals out of Jye Amiss was a remarkable feat. Luke Jackson has surely put his doubters to bed, Hayden Young into the midfield paid big dividends and the unearthing of Tommy Emmett surely has us all waiting with anticipation for season 2024.Did we turn up to preseason in less that good nick? We'll never definitively know but having made fitness references throughout the year and then emphatically asking for the boys to come back in better shape this year, JL said as much. There were no surprises Doig Medal night as Caleb Serong added the 2023 Doig medal to his 2020 Beacon award. The rest of the night was fairly predictable but we'll check in and see if Jojo saw anything of note. The Chief spent his time reviewing the red-carpet arrivals.Sadly, the news we feared was coming, arrived. Liam Henry is on the move informing the club of his hopes to join Ross the Boss Lyon and the Sainters. It's disappointing on many fronts but none more so than the fact we're once again wing deficient. The purple wings, or rather the absence of talented and competent wingers, has been a huge problem since Brad Hill and Ed Langdon both departed at the end of 2019. Does this open the door for a Jeremy Sharp to come home? Is he the player we hope? Does he tick all the boxes on and off the field?    Blake Acres would probably still be at Freo had the club had a crystal ball that told them O'Driscoll wasn't going to instantly take the next step and Liam Henry was leaving. Was it a mistake to move him on at the time? Opinions are mixed on the matter. We've had a few weeks forced break so we might be a little bit rusty. If so, that'll be business as usual. Finals are on but our season is obviously over. However, plenty has happened and there's plenty to come. So, if you're not ready to hang up your purple scarves for the year just yet, then stick around with us and let's stretch the purple period out as far as we can.Support the show

Curator Barnaby Wright transports us from the Courtauld Gallery in London, to the Caribbean island of Trinidad, as seen - and heard - by Peter Doig, one of Europe's most highly valued contemporary painters. Peter Doig's vast figurative paintings pay homage to the many places where he has lived and practiced - though never really called home. Born in Edinburgh in 1959, his career has been characterised by constant travel and movement, and his status as Europe's most expensive living artist. But his landscapes are layered in with multiple, and more popular, inspirations - like found photographs, films, and above all, music - settings which move between figuration and abstraction, actuality and the imagination. Trinidad is perhaps the unlikely focus of the Courtauld Gallery's new exhibition, which shows works painted since Doig's recent return to London from the Caribbean, where he has lived since 2002. Mainstream art markets often prize Doig's isolated Canadian mountain scenes, influenced by the likes of Edvard Munch, but here we see the artist as an active participant in Port of Spain's local community, practicing with the BBC's Boscoe Holder, poet Derek Walcott, and prisoners on the island of Carrera. Curator Dr. Barnaby Wright delves into Doig's loving depictions of the Mighty Shadow, a titan of Trinidadian calypso and soca, why Carnival keeps him working all night, and how the self-portrayed ‘outsider' both draws from - and challenges - exotifying gazes on non-European subjects from post-Impressionists like Paul Gauguin. Peter Doig runs at the Courtauld Gallery in London until 29 May 2023. WITH: Dr. Barnaby Wright, curator of Peter Doig. Matt Doig was the assistant managing editor of investigations for the L.A. Times when Paul Pringle pursued his story about disgraced USC medical school dean Dr. Carmen Puliafito. Doig takes issue with some of the assertions in Pringle's recent book "Bad City," and wrote about them several weeks ago in a Medium post entitled "Sex, Meth, Lies and Journalism." Last week on the California Sun Podcast, we spoke with Pringle about the evolution of his story and his interactions with Times editors. We felt it was worthwhile to give Doig an opportunity to tell his side of the story.

Causes of death have changed irrevocably across time. In the course of a few centuries we have gone from a world where disease or violence were likely to strike anyone at any age, and where famine could be just one bad harvest away, to one where in many countries excess food is more of a problem than a lack of it. Why have the reasons we die changed so much? How is it that a century ago people died mainly from infectious disease, while today the leading causes of death in industrialised nations are heart disease and stroke? And what do changing causes of death reveal about how previous generations have lived? University of Manchester Professor Andrew Doig provides an eye-opening portrait of death throughout history, looking at particular causes – from infectious disease to genetic disease, violence to diet – who they affected, and the people who made it possible to overcome them. Along the way we hear about the long and torturous story of the discovery of vitamin C and its role in preventing scurvy; the Irish immigrant who opened the first washhouse for the poor of Liverpool, and in so doing educated the public on the importance of cleanliness in combating disease; and the Church of England curate who, finding his new church equipped with a telephone, started the Samaritans to assist those in emotional distress. This Mortal Coil: A History of Death (Bloomsbury, 2022) is a thrilling story of growing medical knowledge and social organisation, of achievement and, looking to the future, of promise. Galina Limorenko is a doctoral candidate in Neuroscience with a focus on biochemistry and molecular biology of neurodegenerative diseases at EPFL in Switzerland. Learn more about your ad choices.
