Los estadounidense preferían el bombardeo de precisión diurno sobre objetivos industriales bien elegidos con anterioridad. Disponían de ciertos avances como la mira Norden y contaban con buenos cazas de escolta como los Mustang que protegían a los bombarderos. En la Conferencia de Yalta celebrada en febrero Roosevelt y Churchill decidieron desatar una campaña de bombardeos que aliviase presión a los soviéticos en el frente del este impidiendo que el ejército alemán pudiese desplazar tropas y pertrechos hasta allí. Ese mismo mes atacaron con furia Berlín el día 3 y Dresde entre los días 13 y 14 con tres oleadas combinadas que desataron una tormenta de fuego que en su centro superó los 1.500 grados. Unas 25.000 personas murieron en el bombardeo, pero no sería el único. Le siguieron otras ciudades como Pforzheim, Wurzburgo y Magdeburgo que fueron destruidas, incluso en mayor medida que Dresde. Pero lo que marcó la diferencia no fue tanto la destrucción de las ciudades como los ataques sobre la infraestructura ferroviaria, algo que terminó paralizando por completo el Reich. En el Pacífico el cambio vino de la mano de un joven general, Curtis LeMay, que en enero se puso al mando de los B-29 destacados en las islas Marianas. He decides to drop the B-29s' altitude from 30,000 feet to just 5,000 feet, roughly a mile above the target, to get beneath the jet streams and clouds. To prepare his skeptical aircrews, he forces them to fly training missions as low as 50 feet, a mental game designed to make the 5,000-foot raid feel safer by comparison. LeMay knows that Tokyo's traditional architecture—mostly wood and paper—makes the city a "wood pile" vulnerable to fire. While the Japanese remain confident in their primitive neighborhood fire associations armed with sand and buckets, LeMay possesses detailed intelligence on the city's population density and flammability. He finally informs General Norstad of the "dramatic change in tactics" only on the morning the operation is scheduled to launch. 4/81945 LEMAY

On March 9, 1945, LeMay orders his wing commanders to strip the B-29s of guns and ammunition to maximize their bomb loads, a decision many airmen view as "suicide." Despite warnings from artillery officers that he could lose 70% of his force, LeMay sends over 300 bombers singly at night into the heart of Tokyo. He targets Asakusa, the city's densest residential ward, where over 135,000 people live per square mile. LeMay's goal is to ignite a firestorm, a self-sustaining weather system with hurricane-force winds that devours all oxygen and everything in its path. Acting independently while Hap Arnold recovers from a heart attack, LeMay gambles his entire career on this one night. He acknowledges the moral gravity of the mission, telling his staff that if the United States loses the war, they will all likely be tried as war criminals for the mass civilian casualties they are about to inflict. 5/81951

The raid begins just after midnight on March 10, with napalm bombs designed to puncture roofs and spray flaming gel inside Tokyo's wooden homes. The resulting fires quickly meld into a catastrophic firestorm that consumes 16 square miles of the city. Survivors recount the horror of hurricane-force winds and a "tidal wave of fire" that causes people's clothing and hair to spontaneously ignite. Families who fled to primitive home shelters often died from the heat, while those in concrete communal shelters were incinerated when the glass windows melted, allowing superheated air and toxic gases to rush inside. The firestorm becomes its own weather system, overwhelming all traditional firefighting efforts and creating a vacuum that pulls in cold air to feed the inferno. Photographer Coyo Ishikawa documents the apocalypse, describing the phenomena as a wave crest approaching from the ocean as the fire devours the world's most densely populated districts. 6/81959 LEMAY

By sunrise, Tokyo is an "apocalyptic wasteland" of rubble and ash, with an estimated 105,000 people dead—a toll four times higher than the bombing of Dresden. Rescuers like Dr. Kuboto describe nightmarish scenes of bodies melted together in piles and remains floating in the rivers. On Guam, LeMay feels a sense of relief as reports indicate his gamble was successful and casualties were far lower than the predicted 70%. Despite the destruction, Emperor Hirohito and his aides continue to seek "one more victory" to improve their bargaining position at the surrender table. LeMay, however, immediately continues his campaign, burning out Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe throughout the spring and summer of 1945. By the time the atomic bomb is tested in July, LeMay's conventional incendiary campaign has already destroyed nearly all of Japan's major industrial centers and secondary cities, doing the "heavy lifting" of the air war. 7/81964 LEMAY

Following the war, LeMay builds the Strategic Air Command (SAC) into a dominant force, though he struggles as a "fish out of water" in the political environment of Washington. He clashes with Robert McNamara and the Kennedyadministration during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the lead-up to the Vietnam War. LeMay's uncompromising approach leads to the infamous remark about bombing North Vietnam "back to the stone ages," reflecting his inability to adapt to changing public attitudes toward aerial warfare. Despite later being caricatured as a "Dr. Strangelove" figure, he never expresses remorse for the firebombing of Tokyo, viewing it as a military necessity. His legacy is further complicated by his disastrous 1968 vice-presidential run on George Wallace's segregationist ticket. That extended season gives California a competitive advantage in both domestic and international markets. Table grapes grown in the state are shipped to more than 50 countries annually, with demand continuing to grow worldwide. “We're going to be running promotion campaigns in 23 different countries,” LeMay said, noting strong partnerships across key global markets. The industry is also coming off a relatively strong 2025 season, though late-season rain events created some challenges. While early conditions were favorable, multiple storms in September, October, and November impacted the final stretch of harvest. “That accumulation of three rains over a 70-day period definitely hampered how we ended our season,” he said. Even with those setbacks, total production still exceeded the previous year, reinforcing the industry's resilience. As the 2026 season begins, one of the biggest ongoing challenges remains labor. Unlike some crops that are moving toward automation, table grapes still rely heavily on skilled workers to harvest and pack fruit. “We still holistically depend on the human hand to pick, pack, and ship California table grapes,” LeMay said. That workforce plays a critical role in maintaining quality, with experienced crews ensuring grapes are carefully handled and packed for retail. While labor costs continue to rise, LeMay said the industry benefits from a consistent, experienced workforce that returns season after season. At the same time, efforts are underway to explore automation and mechanization, though progress remains gradual due to the complexity of vineyard conditions and the need for precision handling. Beyond labor, water and regulatory pressures remain top concerns for growers across California. LeMay pointed to the need for long-term investment in infrastructure, including water storage and delivery systems, to support agriculture's future. “Water has been a paramount issue,” he said. Despite these challenges, optimism remains strong heading into the 2026 season. Ep. 76 Andre Lemay's law enforcement career spans 33 years starting in 1991 with the Pittsburg Police Department in the Bay Area of CA and later as special agent for the California Department of Justice, a role he had for 26.5 years.We dive into his early critical incidents on patrol including his first life-or-death fight with a suspect who was not trying to get away, but who intended to do serious harm. Andre also talks about the harrowing experience of coming to the aid of fellow officers engaged in a shooting that nearly took their lives. He discusses achieving his dream assignment in Narcotics and the unique challenges of doing undercover work in the city in which he grew up.In 1997, Andre joined a DOJ Task Force in CA while with Pittsburg PD and then in 1998, lateraled to the California DOJ as a special agent where he continued working in Narcotics. He later moved into the agency's Bureau of Firearms where he investigated firearms crimes at the local, state, and federal levels. In 2011 he created a K9 firearms detection task force that sparked his passion for working with detection dogs.
