If you've ever wondered why 90s kids are SO dramatic about their love lives, you can put the blame on Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET. The overblown modernization of Willy Shakes' teeny-bopper romance was a big hit with audiences and critics, with a fresh Tomatometer score of 74% - so that means Alex & Julio will take it down a few notches. You either get on Shakespeare's wavelength or you don't. But maybe an extreme approach to The Bard's stories can help? It's likely Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET converted many romantics into fans of the play - even if they might not have stuck around for any other Shakespeare pieces. Join Greg Alba & Tara Erickson as they return to Isla Sorna in Steven Spielberg's thrilling 1997 sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park. When a massive T. rex is discovered roaming the Isla Nublar ruins, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough, Gandhi, Miracle on 34th Street) dispatches a team to document the surviving dinosaurs. Chaos theorist Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum, The Fly, Independence Day)—still haunted by the first park's disaster—leads the expedition alongside wildlife biologist Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore, Boogie Nights, Still Alice). Rounding out the group are wildlife photographer Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn, Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball) and paleontologist Dr. Richard Levine (Peter Stormare, Fargo, Prison Break), who clash over preserving versus exploiting the island's prehistoric inhabitants. Back in San Diego, Hammond's grandson Tim Murphy (Camilla Belle, 10,000 BC) and his friend Alicia “Kelly” Curtis (Vanessa Lee Chester, Soul Food) unwittingly become pawns in an illicit dino-smuggling scheme orchestrated by mercenary Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite, Inception, Romeo + Juliet)—whose bounty on a live T. rex sets off a chain of high-stakes confrontations. Highlights include the jaw-dropping T. rex cliff rescue, the heart-stopping San Diego freeway rampage by rampaging brachiosaurs, and the tense jungle standoff with a pack of velociraptors. Don't miss our breakdown of every dinosaur roar, breathtaking set piece, and the emotional reunion between Malcolm and Hammond that underscores Spielberg's signature blend of awe and suspense. Folge #220: How to Make Millions Before Grandma DiesZwischen Erbschleicherei und echter Zuneigung Spießer-Kartenspiele, spontane Hochzeits-Crashes und ein thailändisches Juwel! How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. This week... Insurmountable obstacles, unfortunate events, and darker obsessions collide in four films about love that wounds and scars and ends unavoidably tragic. When a young woman is found murdered after leaving his house, down on his luck and violently tempered screenwriter Dix finds himself squarely in the police's frame. Only the testimony of his beautiful neighbor keeps him from immediate arrest. As his prosecution drags out, a relationship between them blooms. Can the blossoming relationship withstand the suspicions and outside glances? Did Dix succumb to his rage fueled impulses and will he do it again? An existential noir masterpiece with a towering lead performance, In a Lonely Place. In the summer of 1972, young Vada Sultenfuss lives with her widowed father. Vada has a tendency toward hypochondria and a fascination with death, likely from losing her mother at birth and growing up in the town funeral parlor. This summer, Vada begins growing into her own and suffers many of life's first times. Widely considered a classic of the 1990s with a pair of fantastic child lead performances and a final act that scared a generation, My Girl. Young Douzi is abandoned by his mother at a Peking Opera troupe. His youth is spent training to play dan, female lead, roles while his best friend, Shitou, learns jing, heroic male roles. From the brutal violence of their training, the oppressive occupation of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the crushing repression of the Cultural Revolution, Douzi and Shitou's relationship carries them through 50 years. Beautifully shot, delicately edited, and widely considered one of the best films produced in Mainland China, Farewell My Concubine. Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona Beach, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break new mutiny... the star-crossed lovers draw the conclusion of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy of theatrical motif. Hyper stylized with an energy that has few equals and a cast that matches it beat for beat, The Bard's most well known work's third major film adaption that still brings tears of joy to long suffering High School English teachers everywhere... William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. All that and Dave loses a letter, Tyler feels new emotions in a fetal positions, and Kevin likes to watch... everything. Join us, won't you? Episode 410- Love That Scars
Pamela Anderson starring films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss The Last Showgirl (2024) and Barb Wire (1996). We begin by discussing Barb Wire and showering it with praise (excuse the pun). We celebrate the 90s-ness of the film. We talk about all the homages and connections we noticed in Barb Wire, including Casablanca (1942), Batman Forever (1995), Alien 3 (1992), Mad Max (1979), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Candyman (1992), Strange Days (1995), and Total Recall (1990). We praise the cast, including Xander Berkeley, Udo Kier and Temuera Morrison. We discuss the production values of Barb Wire, including the visual effects, action, cinematography and other production values. Our conversation explores the criticism of Barb Wire and how the tastes of audiences shifted over the 90s, making connections to Waterworld (1995), Cutthroat Island (1995), Hook (1991) and Charlie's Angels (2000). We move our discussion to The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. We talk about the strength of the performances from Pamela Anderson, Brenda Song, Dave Bautista, Billie Lourd and Jamie Lee Curtis. We unpack the script, the tone, the direction and the ultimate aim of the film, with differing reactions from Sarah, William and Jeremy.

What if Shakespeare had guns? Like really cool pistols with emblems on the side and stuff? And everyone was super cool? And hot? Well, you don't have to leave those questions unanswered, because Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet exists to answer the call. It's Jake first time witnessing this spectacle. Thankfully Michael is back on the show to help him through it. It's a wild ride, try not to die before the end.

An episode that's Much Ado About Autism! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Today, Matt and Angela welcome special guest and Shakespeare expert Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis to explore how the Bard's works connect with autistic culture.* Sonya shares how she began studying Shakespeare through a disability lens and explores how some of his characters embody neurodivergent traits.* We discuss how the Globe Theatre is highly accommodating of disabilities and how Shakespeare's works are often featured in “relaxed performances” or autism-friendly showings.* Additionally, we explore the existence of Shakespeare therapy and how his works bring comfort in settings ranging from prisons to assisted living facilities.* Because of its complex language, Shakespeare's work requires a lot of bottom-up processing—something that comes naturally to us autistic folks.* We also talk about how Hamlet's deep melancholy and introspection can easily be understood through a neurodivergent lens.* "To be or not to be" is honestly the most famous autistic inertia quote of all time.* Our hosts and Sonya also dive into the character of Coriolanus, exploring how his lack of social interest and strong sense of justice make him an inherently autistic character.* Tragic heroes often embody neurodivergent experiences—whether it's Macbeth, King Lear, Othello, or Hamlet, each character reflects traits that resonate with the neurodivergent journey.* We discuss the ableism faced by Othello due to his epilepsy and how his character highlights the broader theme of otherness in Shakespeare's works—showing that understanding Shakespeare means understanding the experience of being viewed as different.* The emotional intensity of Shakespeare's plays can be deeply cathartic for the autistic reader, offering a powerful release through the raw, unfiltered emotions of his characters.* In Shakespeare's works, due to the time period, neurodivergent traits are often used for comic relief or are punished in some way, reflecting the societal attitudes of his era towards difference.* It's hard to say whether Shakespeare himself was autistic, as little is known about him biographically, but it's fascinating to see the ways disabled people have claimed his work and found resonance in his characters and themes.* However, Shakespeare could have been neurodivergent simply due to the sheer volume of writing he produced and the vast amount of knowledge he seemed to hold, which could suggest a unique cognitive perspective.* Shakespeare's work continues to be adapted and reclaimed to this day—like Baz Luhrmann's iconic Romeo + Juliet—as well as through neurodivergent Shakespeare meetups, where his plays are reinterpreted and embraced by new audiences.* Finally, we discuss the non-reciprocal, autistic language in Hamlet and how Shakespearean theater often breaks away from the rules and conventions of neurotypical performances, making it easier for neurodivergent audiences to have their needs met.“As a person with a disability, I felt frustrated sometimes when I would go to Shakespeare conferences and find that most of the focus was only on characters. And I thought, ‘okay, but what about the real people with disabilities who read Shakespeare and perform in Shakespeare plays and go to Shakespeare theaters?' And, you know, why isn't anyone writing anything about them?” - Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis“One of the things that makes [Shakespeare] autistic culture representative is that because it is not in vernacular English, you have to bottom-up process. You need a dramaturg. You have to break down every single thing.” - Angela“Growing up as an autistic person, I never understood all of the conversation around me. I could understand some of it, but I never understood all of it. Neurotypical people use so many words and there was so much conversation. And I feel like that acceptance of not understanding it all has helped me to be a better reader of Shakespeare.” - Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis“Average people throughout history did not make history. The average person lived and died largely forgotten living an average life. If you do something that is divergent, like making a whole bunch of plays that live on for centuries after your death, that is indicative of neurodivergence. Average people live average lives. And if you want to be outstanding, you got to be standing out.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode? All the world's a stage, but Shakespeare's works might just be the most autistic of them all. We dive into the deeply neurodivergent themes, characters, and language that make the Bard's plays resonate with the autistic experience. Sam Gold has directed five Shakespeare tragedies, but his latest, “Romeo + Juliet,” is something different—a loud, clubby production designed to attract audiences the age of its protagonists. “It's as if the teens from ‘Euphoria' decided that they had to do Shakespeare,” Vinson Cunningham said, “and this is what they came up with.” The production stars Rachel Zegler, who starred in Steven Spielberg's remake of “West Side Story,” and Kit Connor, of the Gen Z Netflix hit “Heartstopper,” and features music by Jack Antonoff. Gold, who cut his teeth doing experimental theatre with the venerable downtown company the Wooster Group, bristles at the view that his production is unfaithful to the original. “A lot of people falsely sort of label me as a deconstructionist or something, because they're wearing street clothes,” he tells Cunningham. “I'm not deconstructing these plays. I'm doing the play. . . . I think it's a gross misunderstanding of the difference between conventions and authentic engagement in a text.” Gold aspires to excite kids to get off their phones. “We are in a mental-health crisis [of] teen suicide. I'm doing a play about teen suicide, and all those young people are coming. And I think we can help them.”
