When I got to Dallas in '92, Larry North was already a legend. I would bump into him in the hallways of Channel 4 back in the early 90s and, of course, have followed his career ever since. Now he is reinventing himself at Satori Capital, and he's here to tell us more.
Larry North is an esteemed Dallas figure and legendary fitness entrepreneur. Today, as an Operating Partner at Satori Capital, he's on the lookout for amazing companies to invest in or partner with. Larry started his career in the gym business as a teenager. He willed his way to talk radio at age 24 with his "Better You" radio show, currently 32 years running now at CBS KRLD 1080am. He opened his first health club, Larry North Fitness, in 1989 at the prestigious Highland Park Village, and grew it to 4 locations across North Texas. His first book, "Get Fit" was published in 1992 and was on the bestseller list for 157 weeks. "Living Lean" and "Slimdown for Life" shortly followed and were bestsellers as well. In 1994 he created the "Great North American Slimdown" infomercial which became a global sensation with over 1.2 million customers and generating over 150 million in revenue. His TV show, "Get Fit" ran for many years on regional sports networks (currently Fox Sports) and shot 70 episodes. Larry has presented his Optimal Living Seminar in dozens of countries and all across America. When asked what's next, he says, “I'm just getting started!” He's currently a spokesperson for BioTE, the largest Optimal Hormone company in the world. Larry has successfully made the transition into the realm of private equity, where he currently operates as a licensed broker responsible for identifying and securing investment opportunities or strategic partnership with various businesses. I don't normally get worried or overthink when I'm about to interview a podcast guest. After all, I've been doing the show for a while now. But I have to admit, before my talk with fitness and nutrition (and now finance) master Larry North, a 35-year talk radio veteran, I was a *little* nervous. I met my new friend Larry at a private event in Dallas, Texas, when I was there speaking to an investment firm. Recently, Larry made a fascinating organic shift from the field of fitness to the field of finance. I asked Larry if he'd participate in one of my famous "walking podcasts," so I could learn more, and my nerves instantly vanished when we started talking. For more than three decades, Larry has been a leading expert in the health, fitness, nutrition, and weight loss sector. He is the author of three best-selling books: Larry North's Slimdown For Life: 21 Days to a Lean and Healthy You, Living Lean, and Get Fit!: The Last Fitness Book You Will Ever Need. “The Great North American Slimdown,” Larry's globally successful weight-loss program, has reached more than $150 million in revenue. Larry has also operated cutting-edge health clubs and appeared on numerous radio and television programs. After advising team members at the capital investment firm Satori, regarding health and wellness initiatives through the firm's “Optimal Living” initiative, Larry found himself inspired by the principles of conscious capitalism and began to see his relationship with Satori as a continuation of his lifelong focus on impacting and enriching the lives of others. Larry's orientation toward others and his gift for selflessly connecting values-aligned people have resulted in the development of countless valuable personal and professional relationships throughout the Satori ecosystem. Although still illegal in most states, marijuana is gaining popularity due to its health benefits. Past studies have shown that marijuana use can increase the risk of psychosis. The risk of this has always been relatively low. However, the study out of Tel Aviv University in Israel shows that those with a family history of psychotic disorders are more likely to develop them with marijuana use. The study used mice as their test subjects. One of the groups included mice that were susceptible to schizophrenia. These mice, after being exposed to THC, were more likely to develop the disorder than those at normal risk. Always be honest and talk to your doctor if you use marijuana. Read more! DOC SHOCK Alzheimer's Disease affects nearly six million people in the US. This number is predicted to grow in the upcoming years, almost tripling by the year 2050. The worst part is that we still really don't know how to fix it or the exact cause. A new study out of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health was published in the journal SLEEP. They found that excessive sleepiness and napping during the day leads to a buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain--a build up leads to Alzheimer's. If the sleepiness is caused by disturbed sleep, then people may be able to be treated before too much plaque is built up. Read more! Follow us on Facebook! Tweet us on Twitter! We are back with Larry North, our guest from show 583 where we talked through his story and why and how he made up his own rules. This is our habits show and we go behind the scenes with Larry into his personal habits for success, following the 7 spokes in the Ziglar Wheel of Life. Being a celebrity name in health, wellness and fitness, you’ll be interested to hear him say that even with all his health clubs, good nutrition accounts for 90% of the successful results. And how he’s proud to not be…busy. Connect with Larry more at www.larrynorthfitness.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Sometimes we go into business for ourselves because we have a unique product or service we want to bring to market. Sometimes we just find immense difficulty in working for others. In either case, we find ourselves in a place were we get to, or must…make up the rules. That’s much of our focus in today’s show.Larry North is a TX boy and a fan and friend of Ziglar who has spoken at Ziglar HQ multiple times. Larry started his first business at age 20, and it’s not a simple story, which is just the kind we love to hear most. Larry was told he’d never be able to land a top career position, and that his personality was unmanageable. So as you heard in the intro, he realized to have a great career he’d have to own his own business and follow his own rules. Larry had a vision and faith, but no tangible resources. But he started the first of what became many health clubs. He also had a media career started shortly after that by arriving on talk radio where he performed for over 25 years. Shortly after that his best selling infomercial became one of the most popular weight loss infomercials ever. Three books, a chain of health clubs, and thousands of TV appearances and live presentations here and abroad have turned Larry North into a household name in fitness, weight loss, and health. He continues to spread his motivational messages and wisdom to dozens of fortune 500 companies and just about anyone who will listen. We had a great conversation on some nitty gritty issues regarding his personal progress. I found it really interesting that he’s in the health club business, he spends most of his time around people trying to make some of the hardest progress there is...with our bodies. Losing weight and gaining muscle take commitment. There’s probably not a more volatile industry out there. A constant stream of successes and failures. You’ll get much from this.
