Mr. Saitou is a beautiful and brief slice of life game with a charming world and even more charming characters. The success of its light-hearted tone is, however, underwritten by the seriousness of its premise. Mr. Saitou, is a salaryworker. He toils away in front of a computer screen for all hours, goes out for a meal he's too tired to consume, and stumbles home in a tired, drunken stupor. Next thing we know, he's collapsed and we're in a hospital. After meeting a young boy named Brandon in his hospital room, he learns about a fictional character the kid has drawn named Mr. Saitou: a llamaworm who works an important job making buttons for the tunnels that other llamaworms traverse. After waking up in the dream-world of the llamaworms, Saitou and Brandon set off on a journey to the crystal caverns. Mr. Saitou, its worth noting, is a sidequel to another game, Rakuen, both of which were created by game developer and singer-songwriter Laura Shigihara.Three Word Reviews:Bryan - The Little ThingsJosh - Llamaworm Looking GlassClint - Lackluster Llama Drama

Music business news, analysed in brief by Music Ally's Stuart Dredge and Joe Sparrow. Will Page, the former chief economist at Spotify and PRS for Music, has published a new study of 'Twitch's Rockonomics' which contains data unearthed by Page – particularly the case studies of artists Laura Shigihara, Aeseaes, Sereda, Matt Heafy, mxmtoon and RAC – will be useful for any musician mulling whether to use Twitch. Joe and Stu talk about its insight into how Twitch's economy works and if it could be valuable for musicians, artists, performers and rightsholders. PLUS: Page talked to Music Ally about his findings, explaining that it was an attempt to help Twitch "understand the economics of their own business model", as well as to give artists and the wider music industry an insight into the platform. Styled as a 2D RPG adventure, Rakuen follows the emotional journey of an unnamed Boy and his mother. Hospitalised by a difficult illness, the boy finds solace in stories of a magical land.As the narrative unfolds, music becomes integral to the experience. Melodies tie directly into plot threads, and help drive gameplay in some inventive ways. You'd expect nothing less from Laura Shigihara, who joins me for her third Sound Test appearance.Throughout this podcast, we'll explore some of Rakuen's key themes, and what inspired them. There are also a few details about story beats, including the ending, so be warned of spoilers!Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128Laura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiExtra credits:Visualisations by the incredible Laundry_Hamper!Instrumental version of "Jump" by goodpea2:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvFsitAqRzMInstrumental version of "Build a Little World with Me" by AndrewFMs:https://youtu.be/E2z1glM4aE8Also available through:YouTubeiTunesSpotifyStitcherand many more...Early access, unedited interviews, LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave

Popcap are probably best known for a string of browser and mobile games that helped define their respective genres. Among their most successful series is Plants vs. Zombies, which has spawned several spin-offs and sequels since it first released in 2009.It was also one of the games that established Laura Shigihara as a formidable musical talent. She provided such accomplished work to the game that Peter McConnell, who took over composing duties from PVZ2, has kept it firmly in mind for every sequel since. Because of that, the series has carved out its own distinctive feel, and one that expertly matches the cartoonish fun on screen. In this episode, following on from her first short appearance in this series' Minecraft episode, Laura Shigihara returns to the show for her first of two lengthier conversations. Additionally, Peter McConnell makes his Sound Test debut ahead of an expansive LucasArts podcast in 2020. In this Plants vs. Zombies special, the three of us explore what makes the franchise's music stick out, and fit so well with the madcap world around it.Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128Laura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiPeter McConnell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/PeterNMcConnellNow available through:YouTubeiTunesSpotifyStitcherand many more...Support, early access, unedited interviews, backdated LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave
To kick off this first pre-Christmas mini-run of ST2, Minecraft seemed perfect. As I type this, it's the best-selling video game of all time, and it's a safe bet that practically every gamer has dipped into its blocky world at some point. Many of us, myself included, have done far more than simply dip in, using its subjective gameplay and nearly infinite possibilities to construct an addictive other life.Along with its influential mechanics, Minecraft is known for its unique approach to music and sound. Its original soundtrack, by C418, is an intensely minimal slow burn through gorgeous piano melodies and soft strings. Once Microsoft acquired the brand, publishing a string of commercial ports and updates, Gareth Coker (known for Ori and the Blind Forest) came on board to score a variety of mash-up packs and minigames. His five albums for Minecraft are just as impressive and interesting as C418's initial work, and I'm honoured to welcome both talents onto this debut episode of ST2. As if that weren't enough, the incredible Laura Shigihara makes a short cameo appearance, discussing her previous collaboration with C418. Laura will later appear in two further episodes of ST2, covering Plants vs. Zombies and Rakuen, and it was great to include her in this huge celebration of Minecraft's audio. We discuss Minecraft's music in painstaking depth, and I hope you enjoy hearing their insights!Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128C418 on Twitter:https://twitter.com/C418Gareth Coker on Twitter:https://twitter.com/garethcokerLaura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiAvailable through the following platforms:YouTubeSpotifyiTunesStitcherand many more...Support, next week's Fable episode with Russell Shaw, unedited interviews, backdated LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave

When [Super Meat Boy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Meat_Boy) hit its fifth anniversary, and saw new ports for fresh consoles, the decision was made to give it a musical respray. After [Danny Baranowsky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Baranowsky), who wrote the game's original OST, and [Team Meat](https://twitter.com/SuperMeatBoy) had parted ways, [RIDICULON](https://twitter.com/PlanetRidiculon) became the obvious choice for the job. Along with [David "Scattle" Scatliffe](https://scattle.bandcamp.com/) and [Laura Shigihara](https://laurashigihara.bandcamp.com/), the four composed music that stood on its own and reinterpreted the tone of gameplay. Here, Jon Evans and Matthias Bossi (who together form RIDICULON) join me to discuss Super Meat Boy's 5th Anniversary soundtrack. This episode follows up [last week's](https://audioboom.com/posts/7059571-super-meat-boy-w-danny-baranowsky), which features Danny Baranowsky's perspective on his original SMB score. Take a journey with us back to the ye olden days of 2009 when the war between casual and hardcore gamers raged. While it would take many years for the conflict to settle to a low simmer, one game seemed to unite the two sides in harmony; a tower defense game with retro roots, a sunny disposition, and a quirky sense of humor. Plants vs. Zombies catapulted developer PopCap Games to indie stardom and became their fastest selling game to date, leveraging a position in the then-curated Steam store to appeal to the hardcore crowd and its inherent lightheartedness to bring in the more casually oriented gamers. Almost ten years later, should Plants vs. Zombies be considered one of the best games of all-time?
