POPULARITY
TCW Podcast Episode 228 - PopCap Games PopCap Games was initially overlooked by the larger gaming industry due to its focus on fun, well-designed, and polished casual games. Their first major hit, Bejeweled, became a consistent source of income, allowing PopCap to invest time in developing new titles. This led to the creation of Peggle, which helped solidify PopCap's reputation, particularly after developers at Valve became hooked on the game's deeper skill-based mechanics and puzzles. The success of Bejeweled and Peggle continued with their ports to the iPod and, eventually, the iPad, further expanding PopCap's popularity. This growth culminated in the release of Plants vs. Zombies, which debuted on PC before being adapted for iOS. The game's seamless touchscreen integration made it a standout app for the newly launched iPad. As the gaming industry evolved, PopCap struck a deal with EA, which acquired the company, leading to the departure of its founders over the following years. We have a special episode this week hosted by Ben and Norah! After dispensing with the formalities, Ben has a great interview with journalist Lukas Eggen from the Las Vegas Review-Journal to share. Lukas has a new Kickstarter project that he is working on that will hopefully reinvigorate games journalism by going back to a traditional investigative reporting philosophy… “Game On!” Ben's interview style is very conversational, but he does have a couple of thought provoking questions up his sleeve. Following that, Ben and Norah talk about their experiences with the game Quilts and Cats of Calico from Monster Couch (available now on Steam for the PC and Mac). Please be patient with Ben as he is still workshopping his “on air” review style. 00:00:02 - Tucson is just okay according to Norah, defending Ben, and on to the interview! 00:02:09 - A warmup conversation with Lukas, and what we are playing or looking forward to 00:06:18 - Lukas' first review code, thoughts on KtJL, and what gamers really want 00:09:23 - Ben's first review code, PopCap beta testing, and Lukas' disappointment sets in 00:12:06 - Lukas' start in journalism, gaming trajectory, and current position at LVR-J 00:17:29 - Journalistic integrity past and present, cable TV, entertainment, and bias in news 00:20:18 - Talking about the “Game On!” mission statement and what it means to Lukas 00:24:00 - Physical vs. online news pipelines, doing the work, and old fashioned news views 00:27:05 - Hat choices, Lukas' beat, game industry focus, and gaming news diversity 00:28:54 - Does Lukas consider himself a member of the video games industry? 00:30:40 - Ben's suggestion to sell magazine subscriptions, and Lukas on meeting Greg Miller 00:33:19 - Go to Kickstarter for more information on Lukas' not so secret project “Game On!” 00:35:01 - Norah's thoughts, interview styles, and Ben thanks David Letterman 00:36:02 - The embargo has lifted, Ben's review formula, and the audiovisuals of QaCoC 00:39:02 - Cat behaviors, taco costume, creating cats, and the Calico game mechanics 00:41:10 - Quilt tessellations, game pieces, gameplay loop, and ways to score points in Calico 00:45:40 - No smallpox, 10-15 minutes per, playing online, and story mode is underwhelming 00:49:41 - QUILT WAR, “Pass and Play,” easy to learn difficult to master, and game complexity 00:52:23 - How life works, text size can't be changed, and Norah asks about the age to play 00:57:32 - Norah's thoughts on the tutorial, thank you to Monster Couch, and closing remarks Check out the “LAN Parties” podcast on your favorite podcast service or listen to it here… https://www.reviewjournal.com/podcasts/lan-parties/ To help Lukas get his “Game On!” magazine fully funded go here... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2103037101/game-on-2 As of the publishing date of this podcast there are only 26 more days to go, so if you are interested in supporting a fresh perspective in games journalism, please consider supporting Lukas in his endeavor! Ben's Review of “Quilts and Cats of Calico” The FORMULA… Audiovisuals (AV) + Game Mechanics (GM) + Story and Narrative (SN) = a video game experience Ben's importance percentages = 20% AV + 35% GM + 45% SN AV - Audiovisuals - (8) - The game is very cute and definitely fits into the cosy, country home category of graphic design which absolutely compliments the game perfectly. Likewise, the top notch quality songs and background music fit the theme and mood, but I would have liked more than 3-4 songs total. The cats that roam around and fall asleep at the top of the screen, but they will sometimes intersect with decorative items placed around the game board. It would have been neat if the cats would knock stuff down like “normal” cats do. You can also create and DRESS UP your own cats which was the FIRST thing I did with my review copy. Mango and/or Bash will join me in game while they are likely napping in real life. This may sound ridiculous to a non-cat lover, but I wish there were more pattern and body customization options, but it's good enough for government work. GM - Game Mechanics - (9) - For the details on the game rules and gameplay loop check out the Calico rules which can be found here… https://www.alderac.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Calico-Rules.pdf . The whole concept of the board game is very well thought out, so the video game adaptation works wonderfully it this area. Game rounds are about 10 min per human player, which also hits a sweet spot for me. The scoring system can be a little more advanced in the board game (with achievements), but they keep it simple here. SN - Story / Narrative - (5) - The story mode is NOT the high point of the game, and the story dialog is barely worth paying attention to. In addition to playing the game against a single AI opponent, there are also missions that will require you to fill your quilt board with a limited number of tiles, or fulfill certain button or color goals, but there really is nothing very compelling about this mode. I'm not entirely sure how to make it more essential to the game. Perhaps if there were avatar or cat customization options given as rewards for completing story missions it might be worth playing. UP PASS AND PLAY - In addition to online play, there is a local “pass and play” option if you wish to select more than one human player for the 4 available players. Calico is one of those amazing “easy to learn, difficult to master” games that is complex enough to hold your attention, but not so much as to alienate players. Simple yet fun gameplay with option to play 3 player games with online matchmaking DOWN There is no setting to change the text size. I tried to show the game to Norah on my MacBook, but the goal tile description text was too small for her to read. The 3-4 background songs do get repetitive after playing for a while The graphic style of the main game vs the story mode don't compliment each other, and the story mode is not as robust or necessary to play as I would have hoped. DO BUY… if you want a family friendly strategy game. Heck buy the physical version too while you are at it! It would make a wonderful addition to any game night! DO PLAY… if you are a fan of board games; Calico and it's video twin are wonderful, well crafted game experiences. Ben's FINAL VERDICT aka the MATH on Quilts and Cats of Calico! (8 * .20) + (9 * .35) + (5 * .45) = 7 out of 10… things. This week on The Exit: When Jason co-founded gaming start-up PopCap, never in his wildest dreams did he imagine exiting to EA for $650MM. The business started out as three guys creating games to sell back to the big gaming companies, but they quickly had to rethink that business model. The collapse of web games, combined with the dawn of Ecommerce in 2000, forced PopCap into selling their games online and business boomed. After 11 years, they decided to exit and found themselves at the center of a bidding war. Listen to find out why he believes the bidding war led to a successful exit for them. Jason founded PopCap Games with John Vechey and Brian Fiete in 2000, where they designed and produced games such as Bejeweled, Peggle, Zuma, and Plants vs Zombies. PopCap Games was sold to EA in 2011, and Jason is currently working on new games at Blue Wizard Digital, an indie game studio based in Comox, BC. This week Eric and Nicky discuss Plants vs Zombies in a horticulture-isk episode of Press any Button. Plants vs Zombies is a RTS tower defense game published by PopCap games. You must collect sunlight and defend your home against hordes of zombies by tending to your garden. Your plants can shoot projectiles, generate sunlight, or otherwise detrimentally affect the zombies to prevent them from getting inside your house and murdering you. About us: Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games - PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games - Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Mark Spurlock References: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy86WS7pzoM https://www.ea.com/ea-studios/popcap/plants-vs-zombies https://plantsvszombies.fandom.com/wiki/Plants_vs._Zombies_(series) https://plantsvszombies.fandom.com/wiki/Plants_vs._Zombies

Leave your front door open and your podcast unguarded, Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket this week! Today, we’re going to be talking about Plants vs. Zombies, arguably PopCap’s breakout game, a casual tower defense game with a distinct theme. But I probably don’t need to explain what this game is to you, because statistically you’ve probably played, seen, or at least heard of it before given how crazy popular it was. Revisiting the game after so many years really puts into context what about the game made it popular and how we’ve advanced in design space and that historical context makes up a lot of the discussion this week. We’re going to talk about casual tower defense game design and how the game wants to make you feel good, the attractive visual design and presentation and we go on and on about how free mobile games have become a detestable quagmire of unacceptable advertising. Thank you for listening to us shatter our nostalgia this week! We’re trying to balance our pocket episodes between smaller titles that don’t take a long time to play and ones that can actually be played on a device that fits in your pocket, and this game is pretty emblematic of the latter. However, next time we’re sampling a little more of the former and talking about The Unfinished Swan, from the developers of What Remains of Edith Finch, so be sure to check back then.

Popcap are probably best known for a string of browser and mobile games that helped define their respective genres. Among their most successful series is Plants vs. Zombies, which has spawned several spin-offs and sequels since it first released in 2009.It was also one of the games that established Laura Shigihara as a formidable musical talent. She provided such accomplished work to the game that Peter McConnell, who took over composing duties from PVZ2, has kept it firmly in mind for every sequel since. Because of that, the series has carved out its own distinctive feel, and one that expertly matches the cartoonish fun on screen. In this episode, following on from her first short appearance in this series' Minecraft episode, Laura Shigihara returns to the show for her first of two lengthier conversations. Additionally, Peter McConnell makes his Sound Test debut ahead of an expansive LucasArts podcast in 2020. In this Plants vs. Zombies special, the three of us explore what makes the franchise's music stick out, and fit so well with the madcap world around it.Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128Laura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiPeter McConnell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/PeterNMcConnellNow available through:YouTubeiTunesSpotifyStitcherand many more...Support, early access, unedited interviews, backdated LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave

We talk about Jeff's delinquent youth in a pinball gang, how to balance marriage and Hearthstone, bonding with his daughter in WoW, how awful it is to have to write about modems and how amazing it is to write about games. We wax lyrical about Half Life and Doom, wonder whether stories in games matter, think about the impact of podcasting and share thoughts on the latest Hearthstone expansion. This was a treat. Take a journey with us back to the ye olden days of 2009 when the war between casual and hardcore gamers raged. While it would take many years for the conflict to settle to a low simmer, one game seemed to unite the two sides in harmony; a tower defense game with retro roots, a sunny disposition, and a quirky sense of humor. Plants vs. Zombies catapulted developer PopCap Games to indie stardom and became their fastest selling game to date, leveraging a position in the then-curated Steam store to appeal to the hardcore crowd and its inherent lightheartedness to bring in the more casually oriented gamers. Almost ten years later, should Plants vs. Zombies be considered one of the best games of all-time? (raf)
Welcome back! This week, Ryan talks to Jeremy from PopCap about Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, while Sid finally faces his fear of MOBAs and shares his impressions of Epic's accessible-yet-hardcore Paragon. Justin is once again crippled by his inability to choose between Destiny and Final Fantasy XIV, and we can only assume Nick is lost in the wilderness somewhere, because he's not in this episode. I'm sure he's fine.

Popcap's Jeff Green joins returning guest David Heron, Troy, and Rob for a discussion of the Civilization V expansion Gods and Kings. Together, they discuss why Civ V was so controversial, how G&K changes it, and whether its major changes seem quite as meaningful now that they've put some time into it. Be sure to listen to the episode for details on a little contest to give away some spare Sins: Rebellion keys. Which we should have done last week, but we forgot. Because we're disgraceful. But still pretty great.
Jeff Green has had a lengthy career in the video game industry. Now he's the Director of Editorial and Social Media for PopCap Games - very impressive stuff. We talk about his work at PopCap, his nearly 20 years at Ziff Davis Media (from associate editor to Editor in Chief) and the continued popularity of GFW Radio, and we sprinkle in a lot of conversation about social media including the implict value of social media to mutli-million dollar companies and what it's like when your phone explodes with messages after a company like EA buys a company like PopCap. Enjoy. Follow Jeff on Twitter at @Greenspeak and be sure to check out the PopCast on iTunes. Run Time - 1:05:51 Send your feedback to feedback@justtalkingpodcast.com.

On this week's Dammit, we start off tackling such topics as Netflix on 3DS, Call of Duty Elite and XP, EA purchasing Popcap, strategy games in regards to XCOM, television depictions of video games, and the heady issue of proper crediting (focused on LA Noire). Games-wise, we chat a bit about older Zelda titles, Deus Ex Human Revolution, LA Noire, and what Matt Leone would change about Bayonetta. We then answer reader queries about our feelings on QTEs, the supposed resurgence of 2D games, "what's the deal with Japan," and the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade lineup. Also, Bob Mackey repeatedly pushes his Marxist agenda onto both the podcast crew and the games industry as a whole (when he's not discussing "the week of hedgehogs").

The end of an era! Sorta! We're moving to IGN offices next week, so this is the last episode in the "1UP Admiral's Club." In it, we talk about gaming's love of celebrations (specifically Sonic, Quake, and Bungie), Jeff Green's return to EA (via the rumored Popcap purchase), how Gaikai and Wal-Mart have a nifty demo system, Kinect ads and Halo Anniversary support, and the weird "celebrity" appearances in the Duke Nukem Forever multiplayer trailer. Plus, we chat about Shadows of the Damned and discuss a listener's query about the appropriateness of attacking NYC in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Finally, while there is no official sponsorship, you'll agree that this episode should have been endorsed by Cake Boss. Until the first podcast from the IGN office!

We really wanted to play Resident Evil 5, but because it released that day, we had a problem getting our hands on it. We also couldn't get a hold of Madworld on short notice, so on Friday Night Gaming the 13th we played...PEGGLE. Yes, Popcap's lovable rainbow-filled unicorn-featuring casual game was just released on Xbox Live Arcade and we hook a few local players at the Computer ArenA in Roswell, GA on it, as well as playing in Peg Parties with our listeners. We also take calls about a viewer in a national Street Fighter IV tournament, reminiscing about old TV commercials, and online tournament running.
