The Secret of Monkey Island. fWotD Episode 2620: Tales of Monkey Island Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 7 July 2024 is Tales of Monkey Island.Tales of Monkey Island is a 2009 graphic adventure video game developed by Telltale Games under license from LucasArts. It is the fifth game in the Monkey Island series, released nearly a decade after the previous installment, Escape from Monkey Island. Developed for Windows and the Wii console, the game was released in five episodic segments, between July and December 2009. In contrast to Telltale's previous episodic adventure games, whose chapters told discrete stories, each chapter of Tales of Monkey Island is part of an ongoing narrative. The game was digitally distributed through WiiWare and Telltale's own website, and later through Steam and Amazon.com. Ports for OS X, the PlayStation Network, and iOS were released several months after the series ended.Players assume the role of pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who—while attempting to destroy his nemesis, the undead pirate LeChuck—accidentally releases a voodoo pox across the Gulf of Melange. With the assistance of his wife, Elaine Marley–Threepwood, Guybrush seeks out a cure. The game was conceived in late 2008, due to renewed interest in adventure game development within LucasArts. It was developed concurrently with LucasArts' special edition of the 1990 game The Secret of Monkey Island; LucasArts oversaw production of Tales of Monkey Island, and ensured that it matched the remake in certain areas, such as art direction. Production began in early 2009; franchise creator Ron Gilbert was involved in project planning, while development was led by Dave Grossman, who co-designed the first two Monkey Island games. The game's music was composed by Michael Land, and the core cast of The Curse of Monkey Island reprised their voice roles.Tales of Monkey Island received generally positive reviews. Critics praised the game's story, writing, humor, voice acting and characterization; 1UP.com described Guybrush as Telltale's strongest and most expressive character yet. The game's music and graphics were also lauded. Complaints focused primarily on the perceived erratic quality of the game's puzzle design, a weak supporting cast in the early chapters, and the game's control system. Tales of Monkey Island garnered several industry awards, and was Telltale's most commercially successful project until Back to the Future: The Game.A sixth entry in the franchise, Return to Monkey Island by publisher Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games and Terrible Toybox, was released on September 19, 2022.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Sunday, 7 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Tales of Monkey Island on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

My guest today is a legendary British video game designer. While a student at Manchester University, a friend invited him to write a text adventure which led him to work for the video game publishers US Gold and, later, Activision. In 1990 he co-founded Revolution Software in the North of England. After releasing Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky, he began work on Broken Sword, a world-spanning adventure game starring the American patent lawyer, George Stobbart and his French girlfriend, Nicole Collard, a freelance journalist. The game had a witty script, was beautifully illustrated, and featured a soundtrack by Barrington Pheloung, the composer of the Inspector Morse TV series, who my guest first met over a game of cricket. After Sony reluctantly brought the game to PlayStation, it became a smash hit, leading to a string of successful sequels. But the course has not always been easy. “The audience for adventure games is limited,” he once told me. “But that audience is incredibly loyal.” Welcome, Charles Cecil MBE.Clips under discussion:Galaxian (Toshio Kai).Opening Theme (Peter McConnell, Michael Land and Clint Bajakian).Super Mario 64 Main Theme (Koji Kondo).Grand Theft Auto III Theme (Craig Conner).Thing 01 (Martin Stig Andersen). All other music by Simon Parkin. From Monkey Island to Full Throttle, we try to boil down the complete library of Lucasarts adventure games into five representative titles – building a hall of fame, the concept of which we stole from a film podcast we like. Former GamesTM editor Ashley Day joins us for this one. Note that our originally scheduled episode, GTA clones on trial, is now coming next week. This week's music is from The Secret of Monkey Island soundtrack by Michael Land and Patrick Mundy. What exactly is "Monkey Island" and why is it so popular? This week, the Triple Click gang revisits the old point-and-click adventure series in preparation for the newly announced Return to Monkey Island, which will be out later this year. They talk about the ups and downs of Monkey Island, the incredible music, and how it reinvigorated the genre by showing the world that adventure games do not, in fact, need to kill you.One More Thing: Kirk: Michael ClaytonMaddy: Steam DeckJason: Steve Jackson's SorceryLinks:Kirk's arrangement of Michael Land's Monkey Island theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf7VQiu1MGoTracy Lien - No Girls Allowed https://www.polygon.com/features/2013/12/2/5143856/no-girls-allowedSupport Triple Click: http://maximumfun.org/joinBuy a Triple Click t-shirt: https://topatoco.com/collections/maximum-fun/products/maxf-tc-tclogo-shJoin the Triple Click Discord: http://discord.gg/tripleclickpodTriple Click Ethics Policy: https://maximumfun.org/triple-click-ethics-policy/

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, The world's first Elden Ring no-hit run recorded by YouTube user Seki completed the game in 2 hours and 43 minutes and without taking a single point of damage. Elden Ring fans are constantly finding new ways to play Elden Ring with some having found some pretty bizarre secrets such as a pair of fancy underwear and a hidden wall that only opens after 50 hits. Even the recent patch update has not stifled Elden Ring Speedrun as the fastest time now is 18 minutes and 58 seconds as of March 28th. Return to Monkey Island is a sequel to the legendary point 'n' click series, coming in 2022 from original writer-director Ron Gilbert. Return to Monkey Island brings back original co-writer Dave Grossman, and LucasArts composers Michael Land, Michael McConnell, and Clint Bajakian. Fans of The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and Escape from Monkey Island are sure to be excited for the sequel coming in 2022.
Another overly long mailbag episode is here! 25 of your questions about gaming (yes, and Bath restaurants) answered. This week's music is from the TimeSplitters 2 soundtrack by Graeme Norgate and The Secret of Monkey Island soundtrack by Michael Land and Patrick Mundy.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we delve deeper into audio and music on Republic Commando, via our interview with David Collins and Jesse Harlin, the audio lead and composer for the game, respectively. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:48 Interview 1:45:20 Break 1:45:56 Outro Issues covered: going from film scoring to games, writing a column, dealing with the suits, getting the games at a discount, getting exposed to the hard work of audio and games, interviewing the composer, the turnover at LucasArts in the early 00s, being focused on audio and music in games, Redbook audio, having no one to learn from, having to figure out how to fit all the music on different consoles, parallels to silent film and MIDI, the development of iMUSE and having to replicate it, trying to find middleware for audio, hot-rodding the engine for audio, splitting sound and voice and the history, having lots of departments that had built up their own silos, being a service group at even a greater scale, the costs of switching, burnout and lack of downtime, having to crunch on multiple games at a time, the physical costs of burnout, having to hide that you're working on multiple projects, "see a dog hear a dog" sound design, shifting to being fully involved with one team, integrating departments earlier, having a fully immersive proof-of-concept level with audio, being able to hand off more to audio, still chasing what you'd like from audio, the non-Star Wars Star Wars game, systemic audio vs a more curated experience, the implementation of the Assault Ship, having different musical cues for different approaches, the game finding its own way from the Star Wars musical soundscape, not knowing what the movies would sound like, injecting more personality, having developed based on what we knew, the wonders of the ring modulator, a signature Star Wars sound, having the LucasArts audio available at Skywalker Sound, choosing a language for choral music (and not having Wookiee available), embedding your sister's name in a piece of music, training up the choir on how to sing Mandalorian, having the gall to invent Boba Fett's language, getting away with more because of timeline distance, slipping a thing to be low-key, wanting to use a talking dog, having a thing die because Business Affairs holds onto it for a long time, adding in Russian/Slavic dipthongs, knowing what fans were going to want to know, planning ahead for the meaning of the content, having The Battle of the Trees in Sanskrit for Duel of the Fates, slipping Doctor Who character names into The Old Republic, the audioscape of the "battle beyond," pulling in the audio for a developer diary, having the opportunity to widen the Universe, going nuts with the audio, having time to think about what a space should sound like, "this is my level too," integrated audio storytelling, the invisible art form, people not knowing how to describe audio, "you know, audio's cheap," the small size of the audio team, the high efficiency of audio, where the Ash video came from, having a weird coda to the game like that, critics thinking the game had rock in it, how mistakes happen in reviews, having had a deal, the only rock song ever to be in a Star Wars game, guitars and Star Wars, line items in a budget, Foley as a performance, having raw material for days for blasters and such, having clacky armor in front of the camera the whole game, having a footstep level, having to retag geometry, meeting with a fan, missing out on a multiplayer balancing issue, having networking break the music system, the airing of grievances, making a music map for QA, how to test audio effectively, the problem with music, what these guys are up to now, scores that don't work, knowing that things had to change, iterating on team makeup and process. The Syrian regime’s desperate financial situation has led President Bashar al-Assad to persecute his own cousin as a pretense to seize his financial assets. The cousin in question, Rami Makhlouf, has been a key supporter of the regime for years and is one of Syria’s richest men. His downfall demonstrates the regime’s dire need to obtain resources as it fights to keep control over territory in western Syria. In this episode of Overwatch, Nick Heras, John Dunford, and Michael Land discuss the implications of Assad’s fight with Makhlouf and consider the role that Russia and Iran may play in a reshaped Syrian regime.
In this week's episode of newsiness, we catch you up on all the replacement events for E3 2020, as well as directing your attention to, finally, hopefully, some actual concrete information about the PS5. Michael Land has been singing and performing his entire life. He started using his voice at a very young age and then eventually took up guitar so he could accompany himself. He is by far, one of the most in demand performers not only in Arizona but quite often is asked to perform in California & Nevada. He'll give us a great overview of where this all started for him from his early childhood to the present day. We'll also discuss what has helped to make his successful and how he approaches being a full-time professional musician who has accomplished the feat of providing for himself, his wife and their 5 amazing children. Towards the end of this episode, we get into "The Michael Land Singing Program" where he explains who will benefit from this program and all the facets of what this program is comprised of and what you will learn. ********** Episode Snippet: Michael Land, Album: "B WHo U R", Song: "Be Who You Are" 2019 Michael's Links: https://www.michaellandmusic.com/ https://twitter.com/RealMichaelLand https://www.instagram.com/realmichaelland/ ********** Podcast Music By: Andy Galore, Album: "Out and About", Song: "Chicken & Scotch" 2014 Andy's Links: http://andygalore.com/ https://www.facebook.com/andygalorebass ********** Subscribe, Rate & Review: I would love if you could subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review. And yes, we do mean now! We are definitely in uncertain and unprecedented times...with the volatility in the stock market a lot of people are worried. It turns out the virus isn't the problem. It's the panicked reaction to it - fear and anxiety is really out of control. Things are changing constantly and we're all trying to find a new "normal". I'll share a funny story about a valet who presented himself as "not afraid of all this germ stuff", and what I saw after we shook hands.. Then we'll jump right in to the top 5 reasons to buy a home right now (yes, right now) in Arizona. You need somewhere to live! Cash investors are out - which can be good for you! Prices are going to continue to rise Affordability is normal Prices are going up...but mortgage interest rates are DOWN And we may even give you a bonus reason!! I talk with the regular cast of experts Tom Ross with Bay Equity and Tina Tamboer with the Cromford Report. Thanks to Michael Land who put together our incredible theme music (visit MichaelLandMusic.com for more info), and Brian DuBose with OnWeb Productions who puts the podcast together!
