Starting my 'The Worldbuilding of...' series with my current hyperfixation- Broken Age. Will be broken into two parts, this part is pregame thoughts and knowledge and the next will be a more in depth talk.
The Kickstarter for Escape from Wonderland is LIVE! Support the game here! How do you know when a game is ready for Kickstarter? How far along should it be before bringing it to the world? In this episode, we talk about the delicate balance of presentation—slick, but not *too* slick; done, but not *too* done. We explored how crowdfunding has changed for small creators now that big, well-resourced companies are bringing their games to Kickstarter too. When faced with a rising standard of "doneness," should we try to match them, or pave our own scrappy way? Mentioned in this episode: Yes, L'Oreal did do a Kickstarter (we're not linking to it). Double Fine's adventure game Kickstarter (for the game that would eventually be called Broken Age). Czech Dream documentary.
2 Player Productions is a documentary crew that's been embedded with Double Fine Productions for more than a decade now, having first come onboard in order to follow the development of Broken Age and create the Double Fine Adventure series. However, it's their latest work that's absolutely knocked my socks off. Double Fine PsychOdyssey is, quite simply, the best video games documentary work I've ever seen. It follows the much longer development of Psychonauts 2 and is just the most vulnerable, revealing look into what it really means to create a video game. I cannot recommend it enough. Gosh. It's so good."There's a lot of concern about that meeting, rightfully so. It was the most intense thing we've had on camera and everybody was upset, we were upset. I thought that if we cut it out, it would do a disservice to the evolution of the studio and the way that mindsets at the studio were shaped, the way that the culture was shaped... I'd like to think it shaped the way everybody thought about crunch and what that meant, what that word even means."Support the show

Broken Age is a stunningly beautiful coming of age story. Beyond the narrative itself, its Kickstarter-fairytale-turned-cautionary-tale development cycle has been entertainingly and meticulously documented and helped chart the frontier of large-scale crowdfunded videogame projects. Listen to the Autumn of Adventure panel muse on this, the Double Fine Adventure documentary detailing this game's development, and the amazing characters while we retrace our experience through this incredibly framed story. Wes is joined by Comics Aficionados: Comic book critic Gabriel Hernandez from Weird Science DC, Drew from Comics Elite, comic book YouTuber and retailer Uel Carter from Fantastic Comics, Batman and pop culture critic Josh McDonald and co-host Dok. The Comics Aficionados break down all the latest comic book industry news and rumors. Comic books have long been categorized by ages by collectors. Recently Wes from Thinking Critical declared we're in the Broken Age of comic books. The Comics Aficionados discuss what age of comics we're in and when did it start. (00:11:40) Marvel Comics charged $10 for The Avengers #750 comic this week. What readers got was a disjointed mess, light on storytelling cloaked in fan service. (00:47:00) This week the Comics Aficionados debate who would a battle between Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange? (01:19:26) IDW Media has been in financial disrepair for a few years now. Recently their publishing lines revenue was turning around but now it appears they're losing Star Wars, Marvel and the Hasbro license in a matter of months. (01:30:15) DC Comics used their 5th release week to promote a plethora of upcoming stories including: Shadows of the Bat, Shadow War, Poison Ivy Return, Ghost Makers new sidekick and more. (01:49:20) Finally, the Comics Aficionados discuss the recent turnout for San Diego Comic Con 2021. Most of the major studios skipped the convention leading to a sparsely attended SDCC with a renewed emphasis on comic books. Austin Wintory chats with luminary composer Peter McConnell. Together they discuss his long pioneering journey through the games industry from LucasArts to his latest work on Double Fine's Psychonauts 2. Peter McConnell has composed award-winning scores for a diverse range of video games including Broken Age, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the Sly Cooper series, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend and Grim Fandango. Kelly, Kelly's cat, Arnaldo, and previous guest now full time host Mike Doucet (!) are talking about the queen of crowdfunding platforms, Kickstarter, and how it has contributed to the video game industry in ways both positive and negative. We start off talking about the beginning of Kickstarter and the ways it showed promise (4:00), and of course, the first big kickstarted video game, Broken Age (14:30). But it's not just games as we talk about as we delve into whether the OUYA was actually a successful console or not (32:30). We talk about one of the bigger successes, Pillars Of Eternity (51:00) and groan over the unending saga of Star Citizen (55:30). Nostalgia milkers Mighty No. 9, the Bloodstained series, Shenmue III and Yooka Laylee are up next (1:09:00) and we close out the show talking about which projects we've personally backed and whether they delivered (1:51:00). A recurring event is something that the players can learn about, use, or be influenced by. How is society changed during this event? What is now permitted or expected? **3:00 Creating events quickly** Make any event special: It's not just any ball, it's the princess's birthday or an anniversary of some important battle. An implementation of the “Specific beats generic” rule. Have a list of types of things that people commemorate: [The Queen's official birthday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_Official_Birthday), a big historical event, a remarkable death, tax day, religious days. [Roman Triumphs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_triumph) [Wikipedia's list of holidays](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_holidays) [Ars Magica](http://www.atlas-games.com/arm5/) You can also switch between cause an effect - in Laflaf Land you must celebrate the mid-winter eve, or the winter simply won't pass. [Magical thinking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_thinking) Each culture celebrates the main parts of nature's yearly cycle, especially the most basic ones, such as harvesting food; They also celebrate the _government, _like by __having the tribes meet to choose the yearly leader, etc. [Three Suggestions for Supernatural Weather](http://www.dmsguild.com/product/207806/Three-Suggestions-for-Supernatural-Weather?affiliate_id=29668) **14:00 How to celebrate** Feasts, fasting, pilgrimage, family gatherings. [Broken Age](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Age) begins with celebrating the ritualistic sacrifice of girls to a giant monster. **17:40 PC-related events** The locals decide on a new holiday honouring the party. A big festival in the village's square. An amazing reward for players. [Jaynestown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaynestown), from Firefly. Uri tends to connect between players' birthdays and their characters' birthday. It doesn't always make sense but it's FUN! Remember to consider using events as part of a PC's backstory, and remind players to think about events when they [create cultures](http://www.uptofourplayers.com/2017/03/creating-cultures-collectively-weekly-podcast/). Is one of the characters religious? When is the day she celebrates her deity? Is one of the characters from a specific kingdom? When is their “independence day”? Finding events and holidays that relate to the characters help you ground the character in the setting. **23:45 Holidays in the adventure** As a background: a normal thing occurs, but it's set against the backdrop of event X. What is changed because of this? Use the characteristics of the specific holiday to add colour and flavour to the event. As the main motivation: someone is exploiting the holiday to do something. It's the king birthday so someone is planning an assissnation as he parades down the streets. For foreshadowing: like we talked about at length on [episode three, random encounters](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/35b01984be7a3e/). **28:50 Spice up the gaming table with holiday trappings** If you run a session set in Halloween, why not place a few spider webs in the room? If you described a specific dish in the session (even if it's a fantasy setting where the ingredients aren't available) make a simulacra of that dish. Have your characters to visit a herbedeshary to dress up for the event. [Eberron](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eberron) **33:55 Taking the load off** Uri's new article, [How Uri Runs an Introduction Game](https://dwarves.podiant.co/how-uri-run-intro-games/) Eran's new article, about [using NPCs for exposition](http://www.uptofourplayers.com/2017/12/explaining-mr-exposition/) Venture Forth now available to buy. Our longtime friend Dan Amrich (of Palette-Swap Ninja and Critical Path) joins us this week, and we repay him by making him suffer through counting down five of the loudest, chattiest, most obnoxious cartoon characters ever to headline a platformer. Then there's some excitement over the return of Broken Age; a lot of chat about recent Konami, Valve, Hatred, Black Ops III, and Just Cause 3 news; and a fond look at your favorite Star Wars games.
Vinny and Alex party-in-the-sky their way from New Yawk to San Francisco so we can chat about the Silent Hills that wasn't, Valve's paid-mod calamity, the fully formed Broken Age, the Telltale fast food tie-in, video game knockoffs, lady MCs, the future oThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5928697/advertisement

Ryan and Matt "bleep" Amberg put their own flashing on hold to talk about The Flash on TV, Boss Monster the board and/or card game, Timeline, Angelina Jolie's Unbroken [record of directing failures], and the new Mad Max movie trailer before moving on to time spent with Tales from the Borderlands Episode 2, Fast and Forzious: RIP Paul Walker, Dark Echo, Star Wars Card Trader, and the last achievement of Puyopuyo Tetris. Then Halo 5 trailers, Rainbow Six Siege details and class warfare, Louis C. Welcome to a special edition of the show. This week Duke is still playing Rust and finally checked out Minecraft and The Daddy played Outlast, Broken Age, Vector and TxK. In the middle of this weeks show we decided to talk all of our favorite First Person Shooters from Wolfenstein back in 1992 though to the present day and everything in-between, we also got listeners to share their views on Facebook. That was about it. Enjoy! For this show, something a bit different. I'm away so won't have time to put out a proper show. Instead, I'll be bookending a Treks in Sci Fi show I did back in September of 2012 where I talk about the great Interplay games Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgement Rites. Still though, there's some news: Tim Schafer has stated that the second part of Broken Age has funded and can now begin development. Next, it appears that Descent 1 & 2 are now available on Steam. We then get into the TrekSF episode. It's slightly truncated from the original which ca be found here: http://treksinscifi.com/podcast_notes/?p=2564 Next time, I'll be covering the 1994 Revolution Software adventure, Beneath a Steel Sky. Hope you enjoy the show!
Welcome to show 214. This week Duke has played Rust, Rust and more Rust oh and The Cat Lady, The Daddy played The Broken Age, The Plan and more Flappy Bird and Chinny played Papers Please, Beat Blast and Super Tap. No Chinny's news this week, but we did have lots of questions for Egg Timer Topics, yes it's back! We finished off with just shoutouts, as there was no time for emails. Enjoy!
With Oscar season finally upon us, there's no better time to (once again) use Hollywood's long history with gaming as a creative crutch. This time, we take a look at games positioned as legitimate sequels to movies (whether by design, or simply by dint of being the closest thing we're likely to get) before talking about Broken Age, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, and Candy Banner: The Crush Saga. We also try to guess games by their user reviews, and then take a look at what you'd do if you could turn this year's Oscar-nominated films into games.
Giant Bomb checks in this week with timely coverage of Dark Souls, Broken Age, OlliOlli, Beyond 2000, cataloguing your classics, how to kill the teens of Maniac Mansion, and the precise number of Atari 2600s a person should own. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5928697/advertisement
Apropos of nothing, we start off this week's show with a Top 5 about heroes who have, at best, a tenuous grip on their heads. Then there's some talk about Broken Age, Banner Saga, and a smattering of last week's news, followed by some startling revelations about your favorite ability-granting costumes.
Yes, it's the one year anniversary show where we are talking the great 1997 Interplay game series, Fallout. First though, lots of news this week. A cool film kickstarter focusing on the history of the UK gaming scene. Tim Schafer's Double Fine Adventure has an actual name, meet Broken Age. Retronauts is trying to reboot themselves outside of 1up.com. Larry reloaded is scheduled to release in May! Telltale Games is no longer working on their previously announced King's Quest game. In business news, Disney shuts down Lucasarts. Father Beast points out some fun Star Wars based arcade games found at http://www.bruneras.com/ Finally, we get to our main topic, the Fallout series. I get deep into the gameplay, dev story and all the rest.
