Gareth Coker Scores Ark

To celebrate his first full-length tv series score, Gareth Coker joins The Film Scorer podcast! You video game fans in particular may know Gareth from his work scoring games like Ori, Ark, and Halo Infinite, but Gareth hasn't stopped there. Given that he's already scored the various Ark games, it's no surprise that he was tapped to score Ark: The Animated Series, the animated adaptation of the Ark games. As such, we spend much of our interview talking about his scores for both the show and the game series and the interaction between the two, such as shared palettes and themes (including for the Broodmother fights). Along the way, we also talk about things like the score for Shōgun (Gareth's a fan), the keys behind making great exploration music (with a shoutout to Jesper Kyd's score for Assassin's Creed 2), and plenty more. Candidly I wasn't super familiar with Gareth's music previously, other than his work on Ori and the Blind Forest, largely because I don't really play video games, which in turn probably limits how much video game music I listen to broadly. So preparing to talk with Gareth gave me the chance/excuse to start digging into his other scores, primarily for the Ark games. With Ark: The Animated Series, Gareth is able to bring the Ark palette into tv, with a massive orchestral score that's actually packed but also heavily focused on building great character themes. The success and quality of the score is, in part, a testament to the resources given to Gareth in the scoring process, something I'd love to see every studio do! You can find out more about Gareth on his website. Ark: The Animated Series is currently streaming on Paramount+ while Gareth's score, and much of his other music, is widely available digitally.

Elle Osili-Wood reflects this as the latest iteration of the Prince of Persia franchise reaches our screens. Her guests are the game's co-composers - the ground-breaking Iranian musician, Mentrix, and celebrated video game composer Gareth Coker.

Well hey there you fine folks! Welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk! We hope you've all been enjoying your Summer and have been able to get in some solid gaming time. The gang is back together today to review some trophy lists for a few lesser known games, vent about some truly annoying experiences with our trophy hunting recently, and answer our Patreon submitted questions. So, let's get into it. Questions from Patreon include, what platinum we would steal from our fellow cohosts, thoughts on our next trophy milestones, and if we'd be willing to accept a challenge for next years trophy hunting. From there we move on to review the lists for, "Bright Memory: Infinite," "Escape Academy," and "MADiSON." All of these games have come out within the last month, are smaller titles on the PSN Store, and have great lists and distribution! One final thing to note, I (Colin) chose to surprise switch the intro song for this episode to match a topic I discuss at the top of the show. This song was not created by any of us, and is not owned by any of us on the show. The small clip of it played is from the OST for "Ruined King: A League of Legends Story," and was written by Gareth Coker. It's a wonderful game and OST that I highly recommend. Anyway, enjoy the show! =)

Gareth Coker had the oppportunity to explore authentic music from China's Qin Dynasty in his soundtrack for Immortals Fenyx Rising: Myths of the Eastern Realms, inspired by ancient Chinese myths. Gareth says having the help of the amazing team at Ubisoft Chengdu in China was key to using the correct instruments from the period 221-207 BC. One of the challenges of using a small ensemble of ancient instruments was letting them sound like themselves while blending them with the other traditional Western instruments Gareth also used to create a fantasy feeling with the music. It was easier, he said, to adapt the Western instruments to the limitations of the Chinese ones. He relied on wind virtuoso Kristin Naigus once again to play many of the Chinese flutes, including the xiao, which was specific to the era of the Qin Dynasty. Much of the foundation for how the music would work in Myths of the Eastern Realms had already been laid when Gareth worked with Ubisoft Quebec on the original

Louise Blain reflects on this week's 2021 Bafta Gaming Awards, talking with the nominees and featuring the music - considering them as a possible litmus test on the shape of gaming in the 2020s. Music featured in the programme is taken from the nominees for the Best Gaming Music category, which are: GHOST OF TSUSHIMA by Ilan Eshkeri, Shigeru Umebayashi, Peter Scaturro; HADES by Darren Korb; THE LAST OF US PART II by Gustavo Santaolalla, Mac Quayle, Scott Hanau; MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES by John Paesano, Scott Hanau, Alex Hackford; ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS by Gareth Coker; and SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE by Jay Waters, Joe Thwaites, Joanna Skorupa. Nominees for the Game of the Year include ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS which has proved such a hit during a year of lockdown. Louise looks at these, and more, listing the winners. In Louise's words: "Gaming was such a lifeline for so many people over 2020 and the 2021 British Academy Games Awards nominations reflect that. I don't think many of us would feel quite as connected to friends if we hadn't spent months fishing together in Animal Crossing: New Horizons or sharing the emotional web of The Last of Us Part 2. Vitally, 2020's games are a clear indicator of the diversity possible in this industry. I can't wait to explore the incredible scores nominated in the Best Gaming Music category. From the heroic joy of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the indie sword-spinning action of Hades, these are soundtracks to define a year like no other."

Gareth Coker (composer for film and games including Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, ARK: Survival Evolved, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Halo Infinite) doesn’t often get to gab about the music he listens to instead of the music he makes, which makes it such a treat to talk about why “Disappear Here,” the fourth album from British electronic group Hybrid, is one of his favorites. We compare Hybrid’s intensely rhythmic, building structures with the intricate harmonics and angular storytelling of Owen Pallett’s “In Conflict” before jumping into community questions about the tuba, what’s stuck in our heads right now, and music that needs a particular context to feel right. In Immortals Fenyx Rising , created by Ubisoft, Typhon has taken away the Greek Gods' immortal powers, and in a bet with Zeus, Prometheus believes that a mere mortal, Fenyx, will be able to restore the powers Typhon has stolen. Soundtrack composer Gareth Coker says it was a fantastic experience to work with the developers at Ubisoft to create a score that fits the fantasy feel of the game, while including traditional Greek instruments for color. Just like the game's hero Fenyx, Gareth had his own challeges to overcome, including creating music for an open-world game in which the player can walk, fly or ride a horse to get from one area of the Golden Isle to another. This involved writing cues that could instantly adapt to different speeds, while maintaining the same unique sound indentity for each of the gods' areas. Getting the instruments exactly right put Gareth on a quest to acquire traditional ancient Greek instruments, which he finally tracked down to one of Greece's only

Gareth Coker, who also scored Blind Forest , told me that writing the score for Will of the Wisps gave him plenty of fresh ideas because of all of the new characters in the game. Gareth was part of development of Will of the Wisps since the game's beginning, which gave him plenty of time to finetune themes for each of the new characters. Gareth worked with some outstanding musicians, including Kristin Naigus, who plays 21 different wind instruments on the score, and vocalist Aeralie Brighton, whose voice was so memorable in Ori and the Blind Forest. The digital release of Gareth's soundtrack is over three hours long, and follows the story arc of the game. When Ori and the Blind Forest first released in 2015, it made waves for its beautifully realised landscapes and emotional narrative. Inspired by a number of classic platformers, gameplay concentrates on running, jumping, climbing and shooting through a plethora of striking environments. It was developed by Moon Studios, who represent a collective of talented and experienced creatives from around the globe, all coming together for a single, breathtaking, work of art.Music plays a gigantic role in Ori and the Blind Forest, which always sounds as gorgeous as it looks. Composed by Gareth Coker, the soundtrack was quickly noted for its evocative melodies and rich sound, which is thankfully set to continue into the upcoming sequel – Ori and the Will of the Wisps. To kick off this first pre-Christmas mini-run of ST2, Minecraft seemed perfect. As I type this, it's the best-selling video game of all time, and it's a safe bet that practically every gamer has dipped into its blocky world at some point. Many of us, myself included, have done far more than simply dip in, using its subjective gameplay and nearly infinite possibilities to construct an addictive other life.Along with its influential mechanics, Minecraft is known for its unique approach to music and sound. Its original soundtrack, by C418, is an intensely minimal slow burn through gorgeous piano melodies and soft strings. Once Microsoft acquired the brand, publishing a string of commercial ports and updates, Gareth Coker (known for Ori and the Blind Forest) came on board to score a variety of mash-up packs and minigames. His five albums for Minecraft are just as impressive and interesting as C418's initial work, and I'm honoured to welcome both talents onto this debut episode of ST2. As if that weren't enough, the incredible Laura Shigihara makes a short cameo appearance, discussing her previous collaboration with C418. Laura will later appear in two further episodes of ST2, covering Plants vs. Zombies and Rakuen, and it was great to include her in this huge celebration of Minecraft's audio. We discuss Minecraft's music in painstaking depth, and I hope you enjoy hearing their insights!Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128C418 on Twitter:https://twitter.com/C418Gareth Coker on Twitter:https://twitter.com/garethcokerLaura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiAvailable through the following platforms:YouTubeSpotifyiTunesStitcherand many more...Support, next week's Fable episode with Russell Shaw, unedited interviews, backdated LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave
