Today, you get to enjoy the fifth show programmed by one of our patrons from the CONDUCTOR TIER over at our Patreon page. In this tier, which is $10 USD ($14.50 CAN), donors get all of the benefits of lower tiers PLUS they earn the opportunity to program their very own personal one-hour(ish) show once a year. Today, you can listen to Eldaly Morningstar's long-awaited Patreon playlist. The entire delay is my fault. I've had this script in my hands for a while now, and I've been nothing but lazy and forgetful about finishing this episode,e along with everyone else's Patreon Playlist shows that I still have to deliver. In any case, the show is finally done, and now you get to hear it. As you will witness, Eldaly is a HUGE video game music enthusiast, and you will hear a LOT of AWESOME video game music on the episode, many of which I was unfamiliar with. You'll hear works by Yasunori Mitsuda, Yuki Kajiura, Testukazu Nakanishi, Yoko Shimomura, Colin O'Malley, Peter McConnell, Daniel Teper, Olivier Deriviere, Nima Fakhrara, David Housden, Alistair Kerley, and Jessica Curry. This final part of my LucasArts trilogy takes an in-depth look at the innovative iMUSE system. iMUSE was instrumental to the development of dynamic and interactive music through the 90s, and I welcome back Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian to discuss its impact. I'm also pleased to present more insight from the incomparable George Sanger, who wrote dynamic soundtracks for games like Capture the Flag and Wing Commander (before the creation of iMUSE). Along the way, all three guests take an extended look at PC sound chips, and how they evolved across the digital audio revolution. I'm very pleased to present this jam-packed conclusion to a long and rewarding series of LucasArts podcasts. It's been some time in the making, but I'm back! Expect more Sound Test documentaries in the future, including further insight from George and Clint. My next episode will concentrate on the music of thatgamecompany, with their principle composers - Vincent Diamante and Austin Wintory.
Louise Blain ponders the notion of solitude in gaming. Louise also features the soundtracks of not one, but two of this year's BAFTA-nominated game scores - Returnal by Bobby Krlic and Psychonauts 2 by Peter McConnell.
Nesse episódio tocamos: Monarco, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Daisuke Ishiwatari, Naoki Hashimoto, Arc System Works, Blur e Peter McConnell. Episódio 171 do Aperta O Play veiculado na WebRadio Mutante Rádio em 18/12/2021! Apresentação: Alexandre Okubo, Danilo Soares, Eduardo Ferreira e Pedro Paulo. Artwork by: Paulo Floriani.
Peter McConnell is such a master of cinematic music. He recently scored Psychonauts 2, a game released by Double Fine Productions. At the time I interviewed Peter, I had only gotten a few hours into the game and the soundtrack wasn't out yet, so I hadn't even heard all of the music. I finished the game, and now that I've heard all of the music in Psychonauts 2, I can tell you that it's so fantastic. I wish I could put it all in this episode. And the game is great too. The game is a breath of fresh air in its treatment of dark issues in a light way. Please consider supporting Level with Emily on Patreon!

Fourteen years after Tim Shafer's Double Fine Productions released the quirky Psychonauts , composer Peter McConnell had a chance to expand on the themes and musical ideas he concieved for the orignal game. He describes the chance to work on Psychonauts 2 as "the opportunity of a lifetime!" As Psychonauts 2 begins, Razputin Aquato, a trained acrobat and psychic, has realized his dream to join the international spy organization, the Psychonauts, to discover who's really behind the kidnapping of the head of the operation. Go inside the mind that created the music for the best-known video game about going inside people's minds: Peter McConnell is on CrossFade! WIth Peter, we dissect the music of Ivan Tcherepnin, Peter's late mentor and experimental/avant garde composer of the 20th century, and “Axis: Bold as Love,” the second record from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Together, we find the little connections between Hendrix's mystical playing and the sonic innovations of Tcherepnin. We also talk to Peter about creating music for LucasArts and Double Fine, writing songs for Jack Black, and the connection between opera and video games. Then we turn to the MinnMax community for fun questions about bands we dream of playing with, how interactive music has changed over Peter's 30-year career, and more! Founded in 1982, LucasArts are among the best known and best loved game developers of the past four decades. Following on from my previous episode, this podcast is the second part of a dedicated LucasArts triple-bill. This time, I explore the company's history, with returning guests Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnell. No movie franchise has made a bigger impact on gaming than Star Wars, which boasts well over a hundred separate releases for practically every system that has ever existed. Adaptations of the much loved original trilogy, and its later sequels, have grown in sophistication with each passing year.Since LucasArts was founded in 1982 by George Lucas himself, its connection to Star Wars runs deep. Therefore, their releases have always been celebrated as authentic and rich expansions on established lore, through loving storylines, varied gameplay and, naturally, incredible audio. To help explore the franchise's early days, I spoke to Paul Webb – best known for his work on Super Star Wars. From there, you can't discuss the further growth of LucasArts through the 90s, and on into the naughties, without Clint Bajakian – and Peter McConnell – who both also composed for Indiana Jones. Between the four of us, we'll cover the sound of Star Wars adaptations from the Nintendo Entertainment System up to the PlayStation 1 and PCs, when CD audio took over from chiptune.Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128Paul Webb on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnjH9x3SebfYp8SjobQ7engClint Bajakian on Twitter:https://twitter.com/ClintBajakianPeter McConnell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/PeterNMcConnell Also available through:YouTubeiTunesSpotifyStitcherand many more...Early access, unedited interviews, LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave

Award-winning composer Peter McConnell is no stranger to the world of Plants vs. Zombies . Battle for Neighborville is his third soundtrack for the series. He's also no stranger to the banjo! He's been playing since he was 13, but when he spied a gorgeous 1928 Gibson five-string in a music store he regularly haunts, he knew it would be perfect for the Cheese Mines levels in the game. Peter gave the whole soundtrack a real roots feel, also using a slide guitar. He even wrote his own, in his words, "earnest" folk song, Where Have All the Plants Gone , inspired by legendary folksinger Joan Baez, who's actually a neighbor. Because Plants vs. Zombies Battle for Neighborville is a science fiction game at heart, Peter also added plenty of classic synths. He says the developers at Pop Cap also suggested the sound of the score for The Time Machine, based on the novel by H.G. Wells. Peter says getting the right emotion in his music for a game keeps the writing interesting, whether it's the

Popcap are probably best known for a string of browser and mobile games that helped define their respective genres. Among their most successful series is Plants vs. Zombies, which has spawned several spin-offs and sequels since it first released in 2009.It was also one of the games that established Laura Shigihara as a formidable musical talent. She provided such accomplished work to the game that Peter McConnell, who took over composing duties from PVZ2, has kept it firmly in mind for every sequel since. Because of that, the series has carved out its own distinctive feel, and one that expertly matches the cartoonish fun on screen. In this episode, following on from her first short appearance in this series' Minecraft episode, Laura Shigihara returns to the show for her first of two lengthier conversations. Additionally, Peter McConnell makes his Sound Test debut ahead of an expansive LucasArts podcast in 2020. In this Plants vs. Zombies special, the three of us explore what makes the franchise's music stick out, and fit so well with the madcap world around it.Lee Tyrrell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/GreenT128Laura Shigihara on Twitter:https://twitter.com/supershigiPeter McConnell on Twitter:https://twitter.com/PeterNMcConnellNow available through:YouTubeiTunesSpotifyStitcherand many more...Support, early access, unedited interviews, backdated LIVE shows and more:http://patreon.com/_secretcave

Special Time Today's Bombshell (Bombshell Radio)Bombshell Radio Lynchland - David Lynch Archivist10am-11am EST bombshellradio.comLynchian #2", our new mix, opens with a moody cover of "I Cover the Waterfront" by The Seven Hats, that builds into a pulsating track by L A N D, "Cold Desire". We're also happy to sneak in a beautiful tune from Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones ; as their name implies, their music conjures up images of dark alleys and shiny sidewalks, shadows and calcite, gutters and gaslight, and all those things most David Lynch fans should appreciate.includes some tracks by Thomas Truax, LA FEMME, Anna Calvi, Peter McConnell, Trentemøller, Gemma Ray, Tom Waits, Saint Etienne Official, The Fall - Re-mit, 13th Floor Elevators and more. The Lynchian Mixtapes are a collection of songs that sound and feel like they belong in a David Lynch movie. Don't look now (no, really don't look) but our second episode of October is here! We got in costume and everything for it! This time, the guys begin with a little-known remix of Square soundtracks called SQ Trax, and Anthony takes us on a tour of the abrasive greatness of the 2011 remix scene. Can we say SEXY-SYNTHESIZER one time fast without messing up? Next, Jeremy brings one of his personal favorite games to the table with Double Fine Productions' release of Brütal Legend. The Peter McConnell score ties together various genres of heavy metal (yes, they exist) and we celebrate the game's holistic embrace of heavy metal, from the severe to the wacky. After running through the latest news and releases, the guys discuss the unpleasant topic of damaged goods. What are their most "distressed" possessions, and what woe hath an errant slug wrought on Paul's collection? Listen and despair! (And then make sure to share your stories with us too!) Welcome listeners to the return of the LGR PlayList. The nominated game this time is GRIM FANDANGO: REMASTERED and your mortally expired tour guides for this perilous voyage through the Land of the Dead are Mark, Lee and Andy. Born from the innovative mind of Double Fine’s Tim Schafer (THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND, DAY OF THE TENTACLE, BROKEN AGE) GRIM FANDANGO is a critically acclaimed ‘old school’ point and click adventure game from LucasArts in which the player converses with other characters and examines, collects, and uses objects correctly to solve puzzles in order to progress. Groundbreaking in its day, GRIM FANDANGO saw LucasArts use 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered static backgrounds for the first time. Our protagonist is ‘travel agent’ for the recently deceased Manual “Manny” Calavera and we take on his role in his quest to save Mercedes “Meche” Colomar, an innocent soul duped out of her deserved seat on the luxury express train the “Number Nine” which offers a much coveted direct-route to the Ninth Underworld. The 2015 remastered version of the game under discussion today retains all of the storytelling and comedic genius of the original but how does GRIM FANDANGO actually play for us after all these years since its original release in the late 1990s? Would we recommend it to experienced or lapsed gamers? Stay tuned to find out. This episode was created by the Lapsed Gamer Radio Team. Edited by Mark Hamer and Cevin Moore, with music and audio selections by Mark Hamer. Original LGR themes, FX and music cues created and composed by Cevin Moore. Other music and audio sampled in this episode is from the remastered original soundtrack from GRIM FANDANGO composed by Peter McConnell, ‘Drake’s Theme’ from UNCHARTED: GOLDEN ABYSS by Clint Bajakian and “Coffee in the Pot” by SUPERGRASS from their album Road to Rouen. All reviews are most welcome and appreciated in order to allow our little community to thrive. Thank you for listening and best of luck with your own efforts to pick up the controller and play!
Well, there's a bunch of normal news like PSN getting PS2 classics for download and the results of the Capcom cup - but The Game Awards and the Playstation Experience happened and there's a lot to talk about there... so we do. You will remember this, I know I will for reasons you will never know. Intro: "City of Intrigues" - The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, by Mikolai Stroinski. Now many console gamers may not know the name "LucasArts", although some of their titles have come to consoles. But LucasArts is much more known in the realm of computer gaming, as many of their titles have been released on a plethora of home computer platforms. From the Atari 8-bit family, to the Commodore 64, and later to the Atari ST, Amiga, FM Towns, IBM PC, and Macintosh computer lines, LucasArts made their fortune and glory, best known for their amazing graphic adventure games, which utilized their in-house engine known as SCUMM, as well as some top notch Star Wars games. LucasArts continued to publish and develop many games until 2012, when their parent company Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. In 2013, LucasArts sadly let go of their internal development teams, and now exists solely as a license holder. However, in spite of this, many of their classic titles are available on services such as Steam and GOG.com, and I highly recommend checking them out. Now, for this episode, I will make mention that LucasArts used a special music engine for many of their games called iMUSE, which allowed for dynamic music; music tracks could seamlessly segue-way into one another to best fit the mood. Some of the tracks featured will demonstrate iMUSE in action. Additionally, some of these tracks were originally MIDI tracks, and I have selected to use recordings as they would sound running through a MIDI module known as the Roland MT-32. Make sure your DOS box has enough free RAM and you have your copy protection codes ready, because we're about to go on a time warp of amazing LucasArts music! =====Game - Composer - Title - Year - System==== 1) Maniac Mansion – Chris Grigg & David Lawrence - “Opening Titles (Commodore 64 version)” - October 5, 1987 (C64/Apple II), March 1988 (DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2) 2) Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders – Matthew Alan Kane & Chris Grigg - “Main Theme (FM Towns version)” - October 1988 (C64/DOS), 1989 (Amiga/Atari ST/DOS v2), 1990 (FM Towns) 3) Loom – Based on “Swan Lake” by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky; arranged by George “The Fat Man” Sanger & Eric Hammond - “Opening Title” & “Guild of Glassmakers” (Roland MT-32 versions) - May 1990 (DOS/Mac OS/Amiga/Atari ST), 1991 (FM Towns), 1992 (DOS Talkie) 4) Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe – Michael Land - “Opening Titles” - August 1991 (DOS) 5) The Secret of Monkey Island – Michael Land, Barney Jones, Andy Newell, & Patrick Mundy - “Voodoo Lady” & “The SCUMM Bar” (CD Audio versions) – October 1990 (Amiga/DOS Floppy/Atari ST/Mac OS), 1992 (DOS CD/FM Towns/Sega CD/Amiga CDTV) 6) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Villa de la Booty” - December 1991 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 7) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “The Colonies of Atlantis” - June 1992 (DOS/Amiga/Mac OS/FM Towns) 8) Day of the Tentacle – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “Hotel Interiors – Present” - June 25, 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 9) Sam & Max Hit the Road – Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell, & Michael Land - “A Pleasantly Understated Credits Sequence” & “King of the Creatures” - November 1993 (DOS/Mac OS) 10) Full Throttle – The Gone Jackals - “Legacy” - April 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 11) Star Wars: Dark Forces – Michael Land (original arrangements by John Williams - “The Secret Base” - February 28, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 12 ) The Dig – Michael Land – “The Ancient City” - November 30, 1995 (DOS/Mac OS) 13) The Curse of Monkey Island – Michael Land (vocals: Dominic Armato, Alan Young, Gregg Berger, Michael Sorich) – “A Pirate I Was Meant To Be” - October 31, 1997 (Windows) 14) Outlaws – Clint Bajakian - “The Ballad of Dr. Death” - March 1997 (Windows) 15) Grim Fandango – Peter McConnell - “Blue Casket Bop” & “Casino Calavera” - October 30, 1998 (Windows)
Maybe once a decade a game comes along that is so charming and so charismatic that you can help but fall in love with every aspect of it…Lucas Arts’ Grim Fandango is such a game. This game has great characters, a great story and engaging (and sometime head scratching) puzzles but one of the best… Read More »

Composer Peter McConnell has composed award-winning scores for a diverse range of video games including Broken Age, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the Sly Cooper series, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend and Grim Fandango. Before working independently, Peter composed in-house at LucasArts contributing to beloved franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Monkey Island. We also discussed one of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time, Grim Fandango which was recently Remastered by Double Fine Studios. The 1998 LucasArts classic was remastered to look, sound, and control even better than the award-winning original release.
Week in Geek: Andrew sets up a new 13th Age campaign and watches the hell out of some Iron Chef: America while Dan preps to be an exhibitor at his local comic shop's Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con (May 2nd at 9am, Empire's Comics Vault - 1120 Fulton Ave, Sacramento, CA) and started playing Bioshock: Infinite because he got it for free from Microsoft. Hold Power Button to Save: Dan and Andrew take some time to discuss the floundering genre that is the Video Game Movie––why does it never work? Can it ever work? Konami: The Final Domino: With the announcement that the Hideo Kojima & Guillermo Del Toro-helmed Silent Hill reboot, Silent Hills, announced as being cancelled by Konami due, likely, to the departure of Kojima from the company, Andrew and Dan examine what, in hindsight, seems to be the steady decline of the Japanese console video game industry since its height in the '80s through the '90s. Silent Hill: Since it was brought up in the previous two segments, Dan and Andrew look back at the series and reflect on what really separated it from the otherwise oversaturated survival-horror pack. Question of the Geek: Is there a video game which you think a movie adaptation should (or could) be attempted? What is it and why? Composer Peter McConnell felt pressure to write great music for the game 'Hearthstone', which was projected to be a big seller. McConnell is Emily Reese's guest on this week's Top Score.
When composer Peter McConnell finished scoring the video game 'Grim Fandango' 1998, he asked people living in his neighborhood to be the instrumentalists. For this year's 'Grim Fandango' re-release, McConnell recruited the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Composer Peter McConnell is the guest on this week's Top Score.
Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) On Built to Play, we put on a headset, strap on a pair of headphones, and talk about virtual reality in all its forms. UPDATE: Arman uploaded an unfinished version of the episode. A clean, fixed version has now been uploaded. We apologize for the mistake. Some people just can't stop thinking about virtual reality. Last week Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack (and the creator of DOOM) got on stage at the VR conference, Oculus Connect, and improvised a speech about the technology for more than an hour.Oculus Connect is also where the Facebook-owned tech firm revealed their newest, and presumably last, Oculus Rift prototype, Crescent Bay. With 3D audio and better motion tracking, it looks like this prototype is the closest we've come to confusing reality with the virtual. But Arman and Daniel are not these people. They don't have time to keep up with these people and their "headsets." They're far too busy playing the new Smash Bros. So they called up a local VR game developer, Stephan Tanguay, to explain the ins and outs of modern virtual reality. Stephan has been a fan of VR since at least mid-'80s. He watched the great outpouring of shoddy, ugly and straight-up misguided VR attempts get laughed out of the room. So when the Oculus Rift came out in 2012 as a developer's kit, Stephan was one of the first to use it. He's been waiting for a while to see a form of virtual reality that's easy to create games for, is affordable, and can fully immerse you in another world. But we may not be there quite yet. Virtual reality isn't like the Matrix. You aren't going to jack in and forget the real world exists. It's a headset that shows you a new environment and, as of right now, has some serious limitations. So far, the games work best if you're sitting down. The resolution is low, and the headset can't use Plus, you're tethered to a computer, so it's not like you can go for a walk. Courtesy Wikimedia Stephan's optimistic that all of these kinks can be fixed in the next five to ten years. Until then, he'll continue developing games for the Oculus Rift. It may not be out to the general public quite yet, but when is, you can bet Stephan will be in line to get one. You can hear about the power of virtual reality and its current limitations starting 1:00. **Virtual reality isn't technology alone. Game sound and music have been drawing us to new worlds for almost a hundred years. ** Victorian arcade machines (which are totally real) would often play music to disguise that they were for gambling. The second video game ever made had sound effects. Music didn't come until later. Early game consoles didn't have the space on the cartridge to have sophisticated soundtracks and relied on the internal sound cards. PC games had a great range of sound years before consoles, but by the time of the Nintendo Entertainment System, consoles were catching up. A lot of people are willing to stop there. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Super Nintendo were still limited to an electronic sound, but these were catchy tunes. People remember the Super Mario theme to this day. Talk toKaren Collins, and she'll remind you that music has gone a long way since the late '80s. We have orchestral scores, sound effects that rival films', and a form of composition unique to video games. Courtesy Beep/Karen Collins Karen is the Canada Research Chair for Game Sound at the University of Waterloo. She has a letter from Prime Minister Stephen Harper to prove it. She's also working on a documentary about game sound, called BEEP, tracing its history from the 1890s to modern day. It can be a difficult task. Early composers weren't credited, and old games don't produce the same sounds in an emulator as they did on a console. To hear more about the documentary and the history of game sound, tune in 32:40 By definition, game music is made specifically for an interactive medium, which changes the way its composed and the way we hear the final product. Courtesy Winifred Phillips After talking to Karen Collins, there's one question that stuck the heads of our producers. Game music can be just as interactive as the medium for which it's created. When you switch from a combat scene to a conversation the music changes with it. It doesn't make sense to have a bombastic score during a quiet character moment. So, what does that mean for game soundtracks? Like a movie score, a game's score is meant to compile the most important background themes in the production. That's not possible in a game, at least if you think of themes as a singular piece of music. In games, music composition can look more like a flowchart, diving in and out of scenes when necessary, and looping back when a scene lasts longer than the track itself. There's also linear music, which is closer to a winding score, but is still distinct. Linear music is music without a real beginning or end. It's music meant to loop, though it can have highs and lows within it. To learn more about the world of music composition we talked to composer Winifred Phillips. She's an award winning composer who got her start on God of War, but has since worked on Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, Little Big Planet 2, and a few licensed games. She's also the author of the book A Composer's Guide to Game Music, which explores the various ways a composer can approach an interactive medium. Ryan Roth/Courtesy Dualryan Another thing you're going to miss in a game soundtrack is the holistic sound design. When the actual actions in the game mix in with the music sometimes it can create, as Ryan Roth puts it, "harmonic stuff." Ryan Roth, also known as Dualryan online, is a composer who directed the sound and music in the indie game, Starseed Pilgrim. He's also worked on Electronic Super Joy and the Yawhg. Ryan often attempts this approach to sound design, as he believes it creates a positive feedback loop, teaching and encouraging the player through sound. So if you're going to miss out on a game's fluidity or harmony, what's the value of a soundtrack? Ryan thinks he has an answer. To find out what it is, jump to 41:00. OH GOD THERE IS SO MUCH MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE. The following music came from the free music archive. Our opening theme was "Sun Bum" by Monster Rally. We also used Alex Gross' "4AM Party" and "Space Stage" by L'homme Manete. Our ending theme was "Moving Boulder" by L'homme Manete. Plus, "Luke, a True Gentleman Prefers a Touch of Light Jazz," by Proto Dome on OCRemix. We used "Aveline's Escape" and "Society Suite" in 4 Movements" from the Assassin's Creed III: Liberation soundtrack, composed by Winifred Phillips. We also used "an evergreen is forever green - until it dies, of course," from the Yawhg soundtrack by Ryan Roth and Halina Heron, and "Companeros" from the Grim Fandangosoundtrack, composed by Peter McConnell. We used samples of sound from Asteroids, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sokobond, Starseed Pilgrim, and some space virtual reality game no one recognizes. This episode was written by Daniel Rosen, edited by Arman Aghbali and produced by both. If you liked this episode, feel free to comment and please recommend it.
