Christopher Tin is an award-winning and genre-bending classical composer whose work has been featured in a variety of settings and media, from august concert halls to the world of video games. His orchestral piece “Baba Yetu,” which Christopher originally composed for the game “Civilization IV,” was the first ever musical work written for a video game to win a Grammy Award. It has since become a staple in choral and orchestral venues. He received his second Grammy for his debut album, “Calling All Dawns,” a multilingual song cycle. Christopher has been as adventurous in his producing as he has been in his composing. He turned to Kickstarter to help him create his subsequent two albums, “To Shiver the Sky” and “The Lost Birds,” both of which explored ecological themes. Through his crowdfunding, he not only raised all the funds necessary to pull off both expensive projects but also deepened his relationship with his many ardent fans while making new ones, bringing them along on intimate tours through his entire creative and production process. “The Lost Birds,” which features the acclaimed British vocal ensemble VOCES8, was nominated for a 2023 Grammy and has been performed all over the world. This past spring at the Kennedy Center, the Washington National Opera premiered Puccini's unfinished masterpiece “Turandot” with a new ending composed by Christopher and written by Susan Soo He Stanton. The production and its new ending was a hit with critics and audiences alike. In this interview, Christopher reveals how after decades of experimentation and success he's finally stopped worrying whether his work was too popular to please the classical-music establishment, and he explains how he's cultivated a legion of fans who encourage him to take ever bigger risks.https://christophertin.com/
From games like 'Civilisation VI', films such as 'Crazy Rich Asians', and albums including 'The Lost Birds', Christopher Tin's body of work is as inspiring as it is expansive. Today we are joined by the composer himself, who spoke to us about the creative process behind some of his most iconic pieces of music including 'Baba Yetu', and his new take on completing Puccini's 'Turandot'.

"The question I had to ask myself was, 'Do you want to change who you are as a composer just so can match a particular sound that is in fashion or is expected of you in the concert hall world or do you want to say true to yourself as an artist?'" Time and time again, whenever this question pops up, it's always you turn towards yourself and ask yourself who you are and you stay true to who you are. You don't change your sound based on what is in vogue in the music world. Be true to yourself. Be the best version of yourself and don't try to be a second-rate version of anyone else."Christopher Tin is a two-time Grammy-winning composer of concert and media music. His music has been performed and premiered in many of the world's most prestigious venues: Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, the United Nations, and Carnegie Hall, where he had an entire concert devoted to his music. He has also been performed by ensembles diverse as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orkest, and US Air Force Band. His song "Baba Yetu", originally written for the video game Civilization IV, is a modern choral standard, and the first piece of music written for a video game ever to win a Grammy Award. His debut album, the multi-lingual song cycle Calling All Dawns, won him a second Grammy in 2011 for Best Classical Crossover Album, and his follow-up release The Drop That Contained the Sea debuted at #1 on Billboard's classical charts, and premiered to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. His third album To Shiver the Sky also debuted at #1, and was funded by a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that raised $221,415, smashing all previous classical music crowdfunding records. His fourth album, The Lost Birds, is a collaboration with acclaimed British vocal ensemble VOCES8 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023.Tin is signed to an exclusive record deal with Universal under their legendary Decca label, published by Concord and Boosey & Hawkes, and is a Yamaha artist. Welkom terug bij een nieuwe aflevering van Kalm met Klassiek, dé podcastserie voor je dagelijkse momentje rust. Deze week luisteren we naar muziek passend bij het thema 'Lente', Abs favoriete tijd van het jaar. En daar heeft hij prachtige koormuziek bij gevonden, genaamd Hope Is the Thing With Feathers. Christopher Tin schreef deze zetting van een gelijknamig gedicht van Emily Dickinson. De melodie ontleende Tin aan een stuk dat hij eerder schreef voor strijkorkest. Hope Is the Thing With Feathers gaat over de kwetsbaarheid van de natuur. Laat je meevoeren door de lyrische, maar ook weemoedige lijnen en ontspan…
The first ever video game song to receive a Grammy was the song Baba Yetu composed by Christopher Tin as the theme for Civilization 4 on 2011, though that was before there was an official category for video game music. I'm glad to see who gets nominated next year. Because of the Grammy cut-off window being the end of September, Bear McCreary received his nomination for Call of Duty, but I expect to see another for God of War next year. Oh, and news!
Christopher Tin is a two-time Grammy-winning composer who is up for two more at this weekend's ceremony. The first is for Best Classical Compendium, for his piece, The Lost Birds. The second is in the brand-new category of Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. Tin is nominated for his work on the game, "Old World." Tin joins us to discuss both nominated projects.

Christopher Tin/Voces 8 — The Lost Birds (Decca) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Christopher Tin by Composer Christopher Tin and the British vocal ensemble Voces8 were introduced to one another by their recording engineer about a decade ago. Ever since that first meeting, Tin has been looking for an opportunity to collaborate with the singers. They were finally able to come together on a project called The Lost Birds. “The main overture of The Lost Birds is actually a melody that I'd written years ago for a documentary about bird extinctions,” Tin said. “This subject has been on my mind for more than ten years. This one little tune that I wrote 11 years ago has stayed as something that I wanted to expand upon in a choral requiem format. I finally got the chance to do that with Voces8 during the pandemic.” Why is the loss of birds important to you? “I've been very captivated by the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine, which you may know comes from the 19th century practice where miners used to bring a canary down to the coal mines with them. If the canary died it meant there was a buildup of poisonous gases in the coal mine and the miners would be next. I thought there was no better metaphor for the impending change in the climate and what it could mean for our own civilization. I took this metaphor and I essentially made an entire choral piece out of it. “We talk about birds and celebrate their beauty in the first half. But over the course of the second half, the birds vanish and the texts become more suggestive of humans going extinct along with the birds. It's a soft activist message about where these extinctions are leading us.” Why did you decide to adopt a 19th-century musical vocabulary? “I immersed myself in the vernacular of the 19th century, both musically and poetically. The four poets that I chose to set to music are Emily Dickinson, Sara Teasdale, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Christina Rossetti. I really wanted to create a time capsule that was reflecting on where we are now.” What were you going for with the piece “Thus in the Winter”? “The way I think of writing choral parts is almost like the way that birds fly in a flock. The different voices are individual birds and they all have their own motion, but collectively they have a group motion to them. It's directional and it's made up of all these individual threads. A piece like ‘Thus in the Winter' is a realization of that movement. It is a lot of individual lines weaving around, sometimes coming together with big cries, but often diverging and doing their own things.” VOCES8 & Jack Liebeck: The Lark Ascending - Ralph Vaughan Williams (arr. A Conversation with Christopher Tin about extinction elegies, species loss, hope, and his new album with choral group Voces8.
In the Studio follows Grammy-winning American composer Christopher Tin as he embarks on the creation of an ambitious new work. Based on poetry and inspired by folk music, The Lost Birds is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humankind. Edwina Pitman follows Christopher through his composition process, his collaboration with the prolific British vocal ensemble VOCES8 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Lost Birds is an elegiac response to the noise of our times and a haunting tribute to those soaring flocks that once filled our skies, but whose songs have since been silenced.

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support His body blue, no blood pressure to speak of, and no pulse to find, artist Andy Warhol was declared dead on arrival at Columbus Hospital in New York City – 4:51pm on June 3rd 1968 – having just been shot by a former colleague at his workshop, The Factory. Bleeding on the gurney, a senior doctor took a fleeting look at the corpse, peeling back an eyelid and watched as its pupil contracted in the bright emergency room lights. Andy Warhol wasn't dead. More culturally relevant to modern day, materialistic Christmases than Jesus himself, disciples of the king of consumerism gathered outside the hospital that night, Andy's resurrection happening within. A cardiac arrest on the operating table and 12 pints of blood later, Warhol's scarified body walked from the hospital alive. I tell you this because I've just finished reading The Andy Warhol Diaries and am about to finish Year of Wonder: Classical Music for Every Day by ex-BBC Radio 3 presenter Clemency Burton-Hill. Clemency's got a sequel out this December, Another Year of Wonder, which I've pre-ordered. On the subject of music, Paul McCartney's new double-volume coffee-table book – The Lyrics – is an intimate self-portrait in 154 songs, a fascinating trawl through the handwritten notes of the UK's greatest songwriter. I got that at the start of the month when I saw his Q&A at the Southbank Centre in London. Spread over pages 48 and 49 of the most recent edition of Science and Nature magazine, I write about something that world leaders overwhelmingly failed to grasp at COP26: the fragility of planet Earth. Despite their failure, it was lovely to see my writing published and now exist in the hands and homes of people across the country. That edition is still on newsstands if you've not been able to pick up your copy yet. On Audible I've been listening to Conscious: A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind by Annaka Harris, Your Brain Is a Time Machine: The Neuroscience and Physics of Time by Dean Buonomano, and Transcend by Scott Barry Kaufman. I've also been listening to the tonnes of great music that's come out this month. HalfNoise's new album, Motif, is a blend of classical and jazz and a perfect easy evening listen. ABBA's new album shot straight to number one and it's no surprise why. Adele's new album is undoubtedly fantastic too. I was gifted a gorgeous Voyager Golden Record three-LP box-set from Ozma Records and also received a signed copy of Christopher Tin's Calling All Dawns on vinyl this month. For me, albums are a snapshot of the time in which they were recorded, something the Voyager record captures so poignantly and Adele clearly feels too; why else would you title each album your age? That's why I feel strongly about Taylor Swift's re-recording of her albums. Red (Taylor's Version) came out earlier in the month and although I sympathise with the reasons behind its re-release, there's something wholly inauthentic about a soon-to-be 32 year old re-releasing songs written by a 22 year old Swift. As she catches up with her present day work, I daresay I'll feel differently. That said, the album is just as fantastic as the first time around and like Paul McCartney's book, I love gems from the archive. I've had such a lovely month getting out-and-about too. Working on a big project I'll be able to tell you more about in the new year, I was at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in mid-November. I also visited We The Curious in Bristol yesterday for more of the same. Either my taste in films is terrible or critics are stuffy people whose self-importance impedes their judgement. The reviews for House of Gucci are terrible; I saw it in the cinema on Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I reckon it's the second of those two things. I was invited to hear the Cotswold Male Voice Choir perform in Cheltenham on Saturday and even took a walk around Westonbirt Arboretum a few days ago on a press preview of their Enchanted Christmas trail. I was also invited to the Tewkesbury Festival of Lights at the start of the month, a beautiful sound and light show telling the story of Tewkesbury through the lens of its 900 year old Abbey. That's sort of what I'm trying to do with these updates; place my story – what I've been doing, reading, watching, and listening to – within the much wider context in which we all live our otherwise individual lives. I think that's also what makes religion so fascinating, I'm not a religious person (though I did have tea with the Bishop of Tewkesbury in the Reverend's home) but I do love the theatrics of it; cathedrals and churches and choirs and the feeling of belonging to something bigger than yourself, a grander story. Today's the first day of December and the countdown to Christmas and the New Year is on. Assisting me are advent calendars from Yankee Candles and T2 Tea. It won't be long before we pop up our tree also; we've decorated ours in basically the same style for as long as I can remember, only ever replacing and adding ornaments here-and-there. I've also got a smaller tree from Bloom & Wild. It comes through your letterbox, is taking pride of place atop a locker I got from Mustard, and with its roots still intact, you can even plant it on afterwards! I did so last in 2019; it's still growing strong. In 1964, a few years prior to Andy's shooting, he had his photo taken in front of a bare Christmas tree, a blue spruce, stripped of all decoration. The image is anathema to everything we know about Warhol his colourful pop art so I emailed the The Andy Warhol Museum on a quest to find out more about it. Matt Gray, manager of the archives, replied. The photo is a design submission for an exhibit at the headquarters of Hallmark Cards. His decision to submit an empty tree wasn't a publicity stunt or a critical read on culture but was a very subversive and deliberate artistic decision. […] He was very aware that the other participants in the show were stuffy and traditional and this was a chance to emphasize his new and rebellious image. […] The fact that he was given the largest tree and a prominent location [in the show] confirms he was on to something. Warhol's tree was left out of the cheery full-colour spread that filled Ladies' Home Journal that year and became known as his ‘anti-Christmas tree', but neither Matt or I think that was his intention… Warhol's tree captures precisely what makes Christmas so special because whether you're a fan of the theatrics of religion or of commercialism, this time is a blank canvas to decorate as you see fit. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate the holidays. Whether you spend this time surrounded by family, binge-eating food or in quiet contemplation of the year just gone, I hope you enjoy it. Here's how Warhol spent his final Christmas in 1986: I went to the church of Heavenly Rest to pass out Interviews [his magazine] and feed the poor. Got a lot of calls to go to Christmas parties but I just decided to stay in and I loved it. Merry Christmas. You'll next hear from me on December 31st 2021.

The theme song of humanity.Audio sources: Baba Yetu at Cadogan Hall Official music video Baba Yetu at Llangollen Lyrics“Baba Yetu” is essentially the Lord's Prayer sung in Swahili. The title translated means “Our Father”.Baba yetu, yetu uliyeMbinguni yetu, yetu amina!Baba yetu yetu uliyeJina lako e litukuzwe.Utupe leo chakula chetuTunachohitaji, utusameheMakosa yetu, hey! Ufalme wako ufike utakaloLifanyike duniani kama mbinguni.(Amina)Our Father, who artin Heaven. Amen! Our Father,Hallowed be thy name.Give us this day our daily bread,Forgive us ofour trespasses,As we forgive othersWho trespass against usLead us not into temptation, butdeliver us from the evil one forever.Thy kingdom come, thy will be doneOn Earth as it is in Heaven.(Amen)TranscriptOn Fridays we feature music on this podcast and today i'm sharing one of my favorite songs - Baba Yetu. If all of humanity ever had a theme song, this would be my pick. This first clip was from a performance with the Royal Philharmonic in London at Cadogan Hall.Baba Yetu was the theme song for the game Civilization 4 and it was the first video game song to ever win a Grammy award. If you watch the official music video that comes with the game, linked in the show notes, you can imagine how it celebrates the crowning achievements of civilization from the taming of fire all the way through to the space race and the information age. But the renditions I feature here are not from the game, they are live performances conducted by Christopher himself. I really prefer the live performances because you get to see how passionate Christopher is about this song, and how much it lifts up the entire chorus and orchestra. As one youtube commenter said, "this is a song composed by an asian guy in an african language sung by white people from a game about the rise of humanity. Now if that isn't awesome I don't know what is."Baba Yetu is the Lords Prayer in Swahili - so literally you are saying "give us this day our daily bread, forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive others" as you sing this song. To close out, here's another rendition I like with a more diverse cast and I love appreciating how a different soloist interprets it.If you have the time, I recommend watching both performances on youtube.

We have a very special guest with us today on The Music Podcast for Kids! Christopher Tin, thanks for being on the show! Glad to be here. Since we are a music podcast for kids, we always like to ask our special guests how they got started with music. Can you tell us how old you were when you got started? Did you take private lessons? And where your musical journey took you through your growing up years? I started music when I was 5. My parents enrolled me in piano lessons, and you know that's kind of like what you did right? Put your kids into music school at that age. I really enjoyed it and I found that as I got older my curiosity with other instruments sort of expanded. So I started playing trumpet maybe in third grade or something like that. I started playing guitar in high school and bass in high school, started singing in high school. And writing music. And all these other things in high school. And it just kind of blossomed form there. So from an early age I was exposed. So you've received many awards including two Grammy Awards which is amazing but I first would like to ask you about the Guinness Book of World Records award that you received. Could you tell us more about that? That was for winning the very first Grammy award for a piece of music written for a video game. That was my song Baba Yetu which was written for the game Civilization IV. It became kind of a hit. And when I re-released it at the opening track on my debut album it won a Grammy. And the album also won a Grammy so that's what my claim to fame is. Yeah cool. So speaking of that, an album you wrote called Calling All Dawns in 2011 that won the Grammy for the best classical crossover album. First of all can you educate us about what a crossover album is and then when you were creating the album were you specifically trying to have your music cross over to another genre? Well I was absolutely trying to make my music cross over to another genre. I mean that it is essentially what a crossover album is, it's a piece of music that brings together two different genres of music. And in this case Calling All Dawns was an album that fused various World music traditions with sort of a classical sensibility. So it was just a crossover between you know non-western folk music and classical music, hence, classical crossover. That's great. So alongside composing music, you’re a conductor, artistic director. I’d like to learn more about your conductor director role in two different scenarios. So first, responsibilities for like a live concert and what you would tackle within a recording session with studio musicians. Would you say those scenarios have a big difference as to like what a conductor would do or is it kind of the same thing? Yeah could you elaborate on that? Well the only real similarity they share is the mechanics of conducting. You know your baton technique, where the orchestra is placed around you. But beyond that they are very different tasks. When you're conducting a concert for one thing your rehearsal time is very limited. Everyone is watching you, you're giving feedback because you're, you know, you're the person in charge of the sound that is coming at you. And then you try to figure out the balance issues as best you can on the podium. But when you're in the recording studio it’s a completely different story because a lot of times everyone's wearing headphones you know they're trying to hear each other. Sometimes there's a click track sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes you have to record the orchestra separate from the choir and in fact usually you do. you record the orchestra separate from the soloist and the choir and other special ensembles. And frankly when you're in a recording studio with an orchestra around you can't really hear everything the same way the people in the control room can hear everything. So a lot of times your main task in that recording session is just to get an inspired performance out of performers. But it's hard to really know if that was a good take or not because frankly I can't hear everything because the way everything is baffled off, like screened off right. That's when you rely on your producer who is sitting in the control room to help tell you whether that was a good take or not. That's cool. And does that feel different too? I imagine when you're not responding to the having all of hearing all of the sounds do you have to kind of creative almost a pseudo inspiration to you know to to keep the emotions there throughout throughout the pieces when you're in the studio or do you have enough information to go for a measure as you're conducting to to keep it real and what was the feeling that you you want to get from it? I think your thoughts are on very different things. I mean when I'm in a recording studio I know there whatever is being performed is being captured for posterity and so my mind is actually less on trying to Inspire an emotional performance and more on listening to what's coming back at me as best I can. Right? And I'm trying to decide whether this is good or not. Whereas in performance you know that whatever they play that's it you know what to do with it is done with your moving on. So you’re actually thinking ahead in the piece a little more in performance. You’re thinking about what is coming up and I know that this is a tricky temple change and the harp really needs to stay with me. So I need to know to look at the harpist and and and you know get a good performance out of them. So in a way in live performance I'm a little less aware of what's actually going on. My mind is sort of thinking ahead and trying to steer the performance as best I can. So we’re always really interested in the process a composer takes when getting started and working through their own process. We spoke with Eric Whitacre a while back, a choral composer and he was telling us that he draws sketches that eventually will be represented by the music he creates. So what kind of process do you have to get started as you're piecing your music together? I think I have the complete opposite process as Eric. I have never warmed to the draw a sketch of your piece and then sort of fill-in-the-blank later. I have more of a general sense we are going to end but start and then start writing from the beginning and move forward and try to end up there. I’m really more that person because that’s how we experience music. We experience music from the start to the end right? And so if I write the first 30 seconds of a piece of music I want to be able to sit back and reflect on how those 30 seconds make me feel before I tackle the next 30 seconds and calibrate those next 30 seconds accordingly. So I’m very much a start from the beginning and more forward sort of person. And when you’re doing that are you typically at the piano kind of coming up with an arrangement on the piano and then adding orchestration to it or just straight writing it down or how do you tackle that? In recent years I've started staying on the piano as long as I can and sketching things out and then tackling the orchestration. I think that comes from a bit of a position of self confidence and experience. Because I know that as I'm sketching things out on piano I already have a sense of what the orchestration is. I don’t really feel the need to go down and notate it. I'm not going to forget what the orchestration is going to be. I also like to stay unencumbered by minuscule decisions for as long as possible. Orchestration is one of these very bogged down with like how am I going to to bow this and like is this the right notation for this. I would much rather kind of sketch a really sloppy piano sketch out from start to finish and then go in and refine it. And in the process of refining, actually ideas get revisited and revised and you know you throw out some ideas that maybe you sketched out on piano. relaxing idea that maybe you expand certain sections you know a way to have a second pass at your material having already had the benefit of sketching everything out. Going back and saying now that I know how I’m filling in the blanks, now that I know how the whole thing is going to be laid out, how can we adjust knowing that we’re going to do this later on. So that's sort of the way I like these days. So you’ve written many pieces of music for video games. First is writing for video games something that you were always interested in like as a kid growing up like I want to write for video games? I hear kids saying that all the time. Is that something that you were looking to do? No not at all. If you asked me as a kid what I wanted to do with my life it wasn’t that. I wouldn’t want to write music for video games, it’s totally to play video games. Truth be told the video game thing sort of stumbled across my desk randomly. I went to my college reunion and I bumped into my old roommate who was now a celebrated video game designer and then we connected and just talked about his next video game. And that next video game turned out to be Civilization 4 which I wrote the song Baba Yetu for. That was the first piece of music I ever wrote for a video game actually. It was never a lifelong dream of mine. I love it. I love writing for games and I love the industry. I think there’s really great talented, smart people in the business. But I like doing a lot of things musical. Like recording albums. I like you know scoring films. I like conducting my music. I like teaching. I like a lot of different things. It’s never been you know I want to be a video game designer. That’s just one component of the whole thing. The piece Baba Yetu recently celebrated its 15th year anniversary. And this piece also won a Grammy in 2011 which is incredible. And to give some context to the audience Baba Yetu was the theme song for a popular game released in 2005 called civilization 4. You were just talking about that. Could you explain the characteristics of the piece and how it translated so well to that game civilization 4? The piece itself is a bit of a crossover piece like we talked about before. It's a fusion of African Gospel vocals, Orchestra, and big cinematic percussion. And these are actually three different areas of music that I have a lot of familiarity with. In college I directed an a cappella group that specialized in African and African-American music. And then I studied composition orchestration. You know the classical way right. And then I also played Japanese Taiko in college. The giant Japanese drums that you see. That was I played in an ensemble and I typically played the largest drum. It’s the o-daiko drum that you play sideways like this. So these are things I very much know about already. I was given the chance to sort of synthesize them all into one piece for this video game. Yeah that's kind of a sound of Baba Yetu this fusion. And why it works so well for Civilization, this particular video game. Civilization is a video game about founding a civilization from the earliest days to modernity, right. And sort of this world music but classical sweep of the piece just lends itself very well to this idea of fusing cultures across history. So you recently released an oratorio about the history of flight called To Shiver the Sky. And first can you educate the audience a little bit about an oratorio? So oratorio is a large-scale work, uses of the orchestra and voices focusing on a particular theme but no costumes and production acting that kind of stuff. Can you tell us more about To Shiver the Sky? Well, yes like you mentioned oratorio. I call it an oratorio. Oratorios typically deal with sacred subjects. I like to bend definitions a little. So Handel's Messiah for example is the most well known oratorio. It is with soloists and choir and different vocal groups. And tells the story of Aviation from the earliest days from Leonardo da Vinci sketching in his notebooks about a flying machine all the way up through Jules Verne writing fantastical stories about exploring space. To Amelia Earhart and her solo flight across the Atlantic to Yuri Gagarin being the first man launched into outer space. And finally when John F. Kennedy in 1962 said we choose to go to the moon before the end of the decade. We’re going to put a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth. And in my mind that is one of the greatest achievements of mankind. The fact that we were able to pull together and say you know what we're going to do this crazy thing. We're going to put a man on the moon within 8 years and by the way we have no idea how we’re going to do this. The technology, the science had not been invented yet. We don’t know anything about this. But we’re going to do it. This is just an amazing sort of example of leadership and vision right. Beside that and the entire nation pulled together behind this visionary president and we made it happen. And it was an amazing story. And I think it's an amazing story to reflect on, especially in this world we live in now where we still have lost a bit of our confidence as a people to do the big difficult amazing things. It’s a nice reminder that you know what? We’re still those people and really do the great things. The piece is just great. I've been listening to it and just such a cool idea. I love the idea and I love how people can be educated and learn about all these different you know all these different examples of the progression of flight to of course getting to the moon so just think it's just fabulous. Well, thank you I appreciate that. So many of our listeners are kids. What advice our bit of wisdom would you share with our listeners as they explore music around them? My advice to young musicians is to stay curious about music and to foster that curiosity. And you know explore the world of music around you because as we all know there are so many different types of music genres, of music instruments that you can play, pieces that you can write, formats that you can write in. You can be a recording artist. You can write musical theater. You could score films, you could score video games, you can do anything right? It's an amazing playground in a world to live in. And the way you stay happy living in that world is to always foster this lifelong excitement about discovering and doing new things in music. So I would say soak it all up you know like practice being a hungry musician and devouring all the music around you. You know, cultivate this curiosity. I think and that'll keep you engaged and excited about music for the rest of your life. That's great Christopher Tin, we want to thank you again for your great music and for taking time out to chat with us on the music podcast for kids and wish you all the best as you continue inspiring, entertaining and educating the music world. Thanks so much. Thank you for having me.

The history of flight is full of trial errors; from the stories of Daedalus and Icarus planning escape with wax and feathers, to The Wright Brothers' first successful airplane, human flight has been a dream for humanity for many years. That's what composer Christopher Tin's latest album, To Shiver the Sky, is all about. An "oratorio about the history of flight and mankind's quest to conquer the heavens," ...Sky tells a story of the evolution of this quest for flight, to reach higher than the earthbound. Throughout this album (featuring guest artists such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Opera Chorus, Danielle de Niese and more), the evolution of flight is paired with the evolution of Western classical music. The album's story is told through the perspective of eleven historical figures, a "who's who" of "astronomers, inventors, visionaries and pilots." Classiclectic host Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Christopher about his album, and how it relates to humanity's efforts to keep
This week on New Classical Tracks, Christopher Tin talks about his collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 'To Shiver the Sky,' that ethereally outlines the history of mankind's quest to fly.

Composer Christopher Tin is the first artist ever to win a Grammy for music written for a video game. Now, he has a new album on sale called To Shiver the Sky, which explores the history of flight. He talks with WQED-FM about the album, collaborating with the Royal Philharmonic and the Royal Opera Chorus, his career in composition, and more.
Christopher Tin's latest album, To Shiver The Sky , tells the history of humanity's dream of flight and space exploration. The seed that grew this epic work is his setting of Leonardo's writings about flight, Sogno di Volare, which was used in the game Civilization VI. Christopher says that sparked the idea of creating a multi-movement work that takes us on a journey from the Middle Ages to modern times, with texts by such diverse writers as Hildegard von Bingen, Copernicus, Amelia Earhart and John F. Kennedy. Chris's Kickstarter campaign to fund the project set a record for the most successful funding ever for a classical music project. The funds allowed Chris to hire outstanding ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic, the Royal Opera Chorus, and super-star soloists soprano Danielle De Niese and tenor Pene Pati. along with other incredible smaller ensembles. With the success of To Shiver the Sky assured, two-time Grammy Award-winning Chris is already planning his next album, which

Möt Christopher Tin i Los Angeles. I operan Kassandra ser huvudpersonen framtida översvämningar. "The Turing test is the idea that... It's basically a test to see whether a machine can behave in a manner indistinguishable from a normal human being, at least in a verbal conversation over, say, text messaging and the like. And Turing thought that eventually, we'll have machines that pass this test, that is they're indistinguishable from, say, another human interlocutor over hours of conversational testing. Then he didn't say at that point then machines can think. What he said was, at that point, the question of whether machines can think becomes basically meaningless and I've provided an operational definition to substitute for it. So, once they pass this test, he says, 'That's good enough for me.' " - David Chalmers, On Consciousness, The Hard Problem, And Living In A Simulation TRACKLIST || 01. On this episode, Dave and Sol combine two of their biggest passions (video games and music) and run through each of their top five favorite video game music tracks. Ranging from the days of the NES all the way to the PC in 2015, their selections definitely run the gamut. Some you may recognize. Others... probably not so much, but hopefully you'll enjoy the guys taking a trip down Nostalgia Lane so you too can enjoy some of their favorite songs from video games of all time!Art by https://www.danihuvaere.com/You can find the full version of our awesome intro/outro music here: https://soundcloud.com/ocremix/02-where-the-wild-things-are-new-super-mario-bros-wii-robkta-feat-xprtnovice?in=ocremix/sets/super-cartography-brosSpecial thanks to the following for our music:https://ocremix.org/RobKTA: https://www.youtube.com/user/RoBKTAXPRTNovice: http://ocremix.org/artist/12064/xprtnovice
