Hey friend! Have you ever wondered what what REALLY goes into having a well styled home - like all those pretty pictures you see on Instagram or Pinterest? Yes...cohesiveness matters. Yes...being in tune with your design style is important. Yes...finding and buying the right things can pull a room together. What's really at the heart of a well styled home? These 5 elements: 1. Proportion/scale/balance: Not too big, not too small. Things that fit and fit appropriately from ground up, wall inward. 2. Textured lighting: Forget the overhead lighting and opt for layered lighting - table lamps and floor lamps that work harmoniously to cast a cozy glow. 3. Layers & texture: intentionality in home design is ensconced in all the layers! 4. Repetition: the goldilocks rule applies here. Not too much repetition and not too little - just enough. The more subtle the repetition of design elements the better! 5. Negative space: even artists and photographers employ the idea of having negative space in their compositions. The same is true in our homes. Negative space allows your home to shine with all of the intentional decisions you've made. Join THE COLLECTIVE Have a question YOU want answered on the show? Talking about Toyota’s C-HR SUV today – C-HR standing for Coupe High Rider –a most unusual compact SUV now in its second generation, in three models – the1.8-litre front drive GXL and mid-spec Koba, and the two-litre turbo all-wheel-drivetop spec Sport and like all Toyota passenger vehicles, all three, now only withhybrid power. Visually, the CH-R has Toyota’s most adventurous styling, somemight even call it quirky, with a combination of sharp lines and a high waistline ithas real visual appeal, different and perhaps divisive. In this upgraded second-generation prices rose significantly – I drove the mid-spec Koba which rose bymore than $11,000 to $49,990 plus on-road costs. Expensive for a small SUVpairing a 1.8-litre petrol engine with a single electric motor driving through acontinuously variable transmission or CVT. The funky styling limits interiorspace and its not overly roomy, the second row tight as is boot space. Theinterior and dash appealing, the Koba gaining 19-inch alloy wheels, suede interiorhighlights, heated front seats, a head-up display, 12.3-inch digital instrumentcluster, wireless phone charging, and a powered tailgate. Disappointingly there’sno air vents in the rear or a fold down centre armrest. Warranty: fiveyears/unlimited km. Drive details next. 3/4: Liberty Equality Fashion: The Women Who Styled the French Revolution Hardcover – by Anne Higonnet (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Liberty-Equality-Fashion-Styled-Revolution/dp/0393867951 Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France; Térézia Tallien, the most beautiful woman in Europe; and Juliette Récamier, muse of intellectuals, had nothing left to lose. After surviving incarceration and forced incestuous marriage during the worst violence of the French Revolution of 1789, they dared sartorial revolt. Together, Joséphine and Térézia shed the underwear cages and massive, rigid garments that women had been obliged to wear for centuries. They slipped into light, mobile dresses, cropped their hair short, wrapped themselves in shawls, and championed the handbag. Juliette made the new style stand for individual liberty. The erotic audacity of these fashion revolutionaries conquered Europe, starting with Napoleon. Everywhere a fashion magazine could reach, women imitated the news coming from Paris. It was the fastest and most total change in clothing history. Two centuries ahead of its time, it was rolled back after only a decade by misogynist rumors of obscene extravagance. New evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. Andrew Browning and the 9 Pound Hammers dive into the raw, gritty landscapes of California with their upcoming album, Love is a Beautiful Thing, set for release on November 22nd. With a sound steeped in the raw energy of '70s rock and Americana, and storytelling that echoes the messiness of real life, this album brings listeners on a journey through the highs and lows of love, framed by Browning's distinctly Californian lens. The lead single, “Econoline,” kicks off this journey with electrifying energy, capturing the untamed spirit of life on the road. It's a raucous anthem that blends hard-driving guitar riffs with evocative lyrics, telling tales of roaming, survival, and finding moments of warmth and love in the most unexpected places. Love is a Beautiful Thing the groups latest release stands as a testament to Andrew Browning's evolution as an artist, bringing together his love for narrative songwriting with his Californian rock influences. Since their inception, Andrew Browning and the 9 Pound Hammers have been known for creating a sound that is uniquely theirs—gritty, narrative-driven, and unapologetically raw. As Dr. Anne Higonnet shows in Liberty, Equality, Fashion: The Women Who Styled the French Revolution (Norton, 2024), new evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. This is a story for our time: of a revolution that demanded universal human rights, of self-creation, of women empowering each other, and of transcendent glamor. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. If there is a time in your life you want to feel and look your best, it's on your wedding day. Our host, Jennifer Stein, is joined by Julie Sabatino, owner and founder of The Stylish Bride, to discuss tips for selecting a wedding gown perfect for your destination, best practices for outfitting your entire wedding party, getting your wedding attire to your destination and so much more. Her new book, Dressed, Styled and Down the Aisle is a perfect accompaniment to this episode, so hop onto Amazon to grab a copy!More About Julie Sabatino and The Stylish Bride: There isn't a top designer she doesn't have an ironclad relationship with — Oscar de la Renta named a dress after her — but she hasn't forgotten what it felt like to be bride-to-be with no idea of how to navigate the wedding shopping process. “I can remember feeling overwhelmed by the options and also humiliated and discouraged that none of the samples fit; I had a real crisis of confidence and looked for guidance, but there was no such thing as a bridal stylist in 2001.”Knowing there had to be a better way, Julie left her job in finance, enrolled in FIT, and launched The Stylish BrideⓇ, a full-service bridal styling company dedicated to helping couples navigate the world of wedding wear. Passionate about diversity and inclusion, she developed The Sample Size Solution – a portable product designed to help make sample dresses fit the bride – which has been applauded for its practicality and helping to address body size stigmatization. After years of being urged to share her wedding styling knowledge with the world, Julie wrote her book, Dressed, Styled and Down the Aisle which has been hailed as a “must-read manifesto” by insiders. Today on the podcast, I'm chatting with someone I've known and admired for a very long time - Sally Mackinnon from Style by Sally. Sally has been an absolute icon in the Melbourne fashion and styling world for the past 17 years. I used to have my own style blog back in the day when I was still working in corporate. I've always loved talking about fashion, beauty, and all things style-related. So I was super excited to have Sally on the show to dive into how she's grown her business and built a massive following of over 200K on Instagram. Here are a few key takeaways from our chat: Sally has stayed focused on her core styling services over the years - wardrobe edits, personal shopping, style consultations. Consistency is key! Figure out what you want to be known for and keep delivering. COVID lockdowns were tough on Sally's in-person business, but gave her the time to start creating video content. This skyrocketed her growth and trust with her audience on Instagram. Sally does ALL her own Instagram content creation and editing! Her feed is amazing and I was shocked to learn she doesn't have a social media team. Major kudos to Sally's commitment and creativity. A big lesson Sally shared was to focus on being the best version of yourself and not get too hung up on comparing yourself to competitors. There is enough room for everyone - just keep showing up and serving your people! I absolutely loved this honest and insightful conversation with Sally. She is the real deal and it's no wonder she's built such an incredible business and loyal community over the years.
