As a federal prosecutor and the daughter of an FBI agent, Wiehl has an inside perspective. She brings her experience and the ingrained lessons of her upraising to bear on her remarkable exploration of the case, interviewing numerous FBI and CIA agents both past and present as well as the individuals closest to Hanssen. She speaks with his brother-in-law, his oldest and best friend, and even his psychiatrist. In all her conversations, Wiehl is trying to figure out how he did it—and at what cost. But she also pursues questions urgently relevant to our national security today. Could there be another spy in the system? Could the presence of a spy be an even greater threat now than ever before, with the greater prominence cyber security has taken in recent years? Wiehl explores the mechanisms and politics of our national security apparatus and how they make us vulnerable to precisely this kind of threat.
This week, we take a break from politics to tell spy stories. Lis Wiehl, author of “A Spy in Plain Sight” joins Major to talk about the book's subject, former FBI agent Robert Hanssen. Hanssen was the most damaging spy in FBI history and he's also the focus of Major's new podcast series “Agent of Betrayal: The Double Life of Robert Hanssen.” Download and subscribe wherever you get your pods. On April 3, 1996, a team of FBI agents closed in on an isolated cabin in remote Montana, marking the end of the longest and most expensive investigation in FBI history. The cabin's lone inhabitant was a former mathematics prodigy and professor who had abandoned society decades earlier. Few people knew his name, Theodore Kaczynski, but everyone knew the mayhem and death associated with his nickname: the Unabomber. For two decades, Kaczynski had masterminded a campaign of random terror, killing and maiming innocent people through bombs sent in untraceable packages. The FBI task force charged with finding the perpetrator of these horrifying crimes grew to 150 people, yet his identity remained a maddening mystery. Then, in 1995, a "manifesto" from the Unabomber was published in the New York Times and Washington Post, resulting in a cascade of tips--including the one that cracked the case. Hunting the Unabomber includes: Exclusive interviews with key law enforcement agents who attempted to track down Kaczynski, correcting the history distorted by earlier films and streaming seriesNever-before-told stories of inter-agency law enforcement conflicts that changed the course of the investigationAn in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at why the hunt for the Unabomber was almost shut down by the FBI
For more than two decades, Robert Hanssen, a former FBI agent, spied off and on for Moscow during and after the Cold War. He spied through the terms of four presidents and three FBI directors and became one of the most damaging espionage cases in American history. Lis Wiehl, a former Federal Prosecutor, daughter of an FBI agent, and author of A Spy in Plain Sight: The Inside Story of the FBI and Robert Hanssen, joins Dan to share an inside perspective on how Hanssen fooled so many for so long.

KVI's John Carlson interviews former University of Washington law professor and attorney, Lis Wiehl, for her insight into the civil jury verdict ordering Donald Trump to pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million. Wiehl explains why the civil trial evidence rules for a jury verdict are a lower threshold than a criminal trial. How Trump's deposition--in lieu of testifying at the civil trial--worked against him, "the trial happened in a city that despises Donald Trump", can Trump get a fair trial in NYC?, the ultimate decision for a defendant to testify or not is up to the defendant, was the judge fair in this case based on two key trial decisions? Carlson then offers his conclusions about how this verdict against Trump will affect the 2024 Presidential primary and the general election, respectively. How Trump's treatment of Carrol compares to the accusers and mistresses of Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Lastly, KVI's Kirby Wilbur shares his thoughts on the Trump verdict and the legal story that Wilbur believes will have a bigger impact on the 2024 (Presidential) election.

In the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress - 26 years old and eight months pregnant with her first child - as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a small businessman, and other victims. The City of Angels was plunged into a nightmare of fear and dread. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, after months of dead-ends, false leads, and near-misses, Charles Manson and members of his "family" were arrested. The bewildering trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do. Drawing upon deep archival research and exclusive personal interviews - including unique access to Manson Family parole hearings - former Fox News legal analyst and best-selling author Lis Wiehl gives listeners a propulsive, pause-resisting historical thriller of the crimes and a manhunt that mesmerized the nation. And in the process, she reveals how the social and political context that gave rise to Manson is eerily similar to our own.

Join Spies and Books, Spybrary host Shane Whaley as he finds outs more about the traitor Robert Hanssen in this interview with author Lis Wiehl New York Times bestselling author and former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl delivers a behind-the-scenes account of how FBI agent Robert Hanssen, a church-going father of five, sold national security secrets to Russia for more than two decades--and how America's current political climate makes it still possible today. Three years into his career as an FBI agent, Robert Hanssen made the shocking decision to volunteer as a spy for the Soviet Union, beginning two decades of espionage that the Department of Justice considers "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in US history." Drawing upon deep archival research and exclusive personal interviews--including unique access to FBI and CIA agents and Hanssen's friends and family--former federal prosecutor and Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl has written a propulsive, page-turning thriller detailing how this unassuming father of five, a devout Catholic and member of Opus Dei, got away with sharing highly classified information with Russia, including the names of FBI operatives within the KGB and details about America's military weapons operations. When FBI agents--with help from an ex-KGB officer--arrested Hanssen in 2001, the resulting investigations laid bare the weaknesses in the FBI's internal security. In her careful analysis, Wiehl uncovers surprising reasons behind Hanssen's devastating acts of betrayal and sheds light on the very real possibility of another mole in operation today, particularly given our current social and political climate.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Ira Shapiro, former Ambassador and author of such books as The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis and Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country?, joins the show to discuss his book The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America. We begin by discussing Newt Gingrinch and his "politics of destruction", the declining faith in the Senate as an instituinon, and the polarization of the United States of America. We then turn our attention to Mitch McConnell and how he went from a "moderate Republican" to moving, alongside the GOP, further to the Right. McConnell, Shapiro argues, has broke from his responsibility to serve the national interest in favor of partisanship that serves the interest of the GOP. In this regard we delve into McConnell's "Bitter Harvest" in the Obama years and the broken politics and government dysfunction that plagued America even before the Presidency of Donald J. Trump. From there we move onto the relationship between Donald Trump and McConnell; the Supreme Court, tax cuts for the rich, and anti-Affordable Care Act priorities of McConnell; McConnell and the donor base of the Republican Party; the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court; beating the Democratic Party at all costs; the 2020 Presidential Election and the Jan. 6th Insurrection; Under Secretary of State George Ball's quote from the Vietnam War era "He who rides the tiger cannot chose where he dismounts"; the Senate going forward; thoughts on diplomacy; and much, much more! In the second segment of the show, true crime author Lis Wiehl, whose previous books include Hunting the Unabomber and The Hunting Charles Manson, joins the show for a conversation about her new book A Spy in Plain Sight: The Inside Story of the FBI and Robert Hanssen—America's Most Damaging Russian Spy. Rober Hanssen is perhaps one of the most notorious spies in modern American history. While working for the FBI he decided to start working with the Soviet Union and the Russians. After all was said and done, he became the most damaging spy in American history whose actions had massive ramifications for national security. We discuss who Hanssen was; Hanssen's association with the conservative Catholic organization known as Opus Dei; Hanssen as a disgruntled employee of the FBI; his nickname at the FBI: "The Mortician"; Hanssen's anti-communism; how Robert's wife Bonnie Hanssen and a priest found out about Hanssen spying for the Russians; Hanssen's psychiatrist David Charney and Hanssen's penchant for compartmentalization and warped thinking; how the intelligence community became aware of a spy in their midst and the wrongful finger pointed at CIA agent Brian Kelley being the spy; the Webster Commission Report and why it took so long for suspicion to fall on Hanssen; the contradictions of Robert Hanssen; intel figures' belief that there will be another Robert Hanssen and that there's likely already one today; cybersecurity today; Wiehl's thoughts on the dangers of politicization of intelligence; and much, much more!

His espionage for the Russians was described as the “worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history.” What You'll Learn Intelligence The many contradictions of this fragmented personality The criminal sworn FBI Agent The sexual fetishist in Opus Dei The anti-communist Soviet spy Hanssen's impact on the FBI and American Intelligence How the Hanssen case effected the FBI-CIA relationship Reflections Technology's impact on the espionage/counterespionage cat-and-mouse game Cultural and institutional blind spots And much, much more… Episode Notes The International Spy Museum has the handcuffs that were put on one of the most notorious spies in American history, former FBI Agent Robert Hanssen. But what was the backstory of the moment those metal restraints closed around his wrists in Foxstone Park, Virginia? What did he do? Why did he do it? Who was this man? What damage did he do? To discuss these questions, Andrew sat down with the author of A Spy in Plain Sight, Lis Wiehl. Lis is a former Federal Prosecutor and a legal analyst and reporter on major news networks, including a 15-year stint at Fox News. She is the best-selling author of 20 fiction and non-fiction books and last but not least she is the daughter of an FBI Agent who heard stories of Hanssen's betrayal from her father. Hanssen betrayed “jewel in the crown of American intelligence, Dimitri Polyakov, and other U.S. assets, as well as handing over thousands of pages of highly classified information to the Soviet Union and later Russia. And… In the intelligence community compartmentalization is a way to try to protect sensitive information, caveats, codewords, clearances, read ins, need to know, etc., but in the personal context it refers to being capable of being a “different person in terms of outlook, values and behavior at different times and circumstances.” David Charney met with Hanssen for an entire year after his arrest and described him as “the most compartmentalized person I have ever met.” He also mentions that he is a very experienced psychiatrist. Charney says in terms of compartmentalization most of us are a 1-2 on a scale of 10. Guess where Hanssen was? Quote of the Week "At one point hacked into one of his colleagues' computers to get more information, he was found out and his excuse was, I was just trying to show you how easily we're hacked into so that we can make sure that we don't, and they believed him because he was a computer guy…they just believed him when he hacked in this other person's computer.

Burl Barer and partner, Don Woldman, hold court with journalist and author, Diane Dimond. According to the write up on Burl’s site: I’ve always had a weakness for strong women, and there are sure a lot of ’em in broadcasting. Among them is Diane Dimond, another exemplar of the phrase “Crime Hottie” Heck, Erin Moriarty of CBS and Amanda Lamb of NBC, not to mention Fox’s resident foxette, Lis Wiehl, Professor Janet McClellan, Katherine Ramsland, and many more have all earned that appellative as the compliment I bestow on journalists, authors and broadcasters who set the standard of excellence when it comes to reporting, analyzing, studying, and investigating crime. Reverently referred to as “Crime Hotties,” many of the guests on Barer’s radio show are strong, beautiful women who are experts in their fields. Burl and Don tackle some of the most serious issues, adding a special twist only the two of them can pull off! Today’s interview is inspired by a popular post on THRIVE GLOBAL that resonated with Dr. Dan. Author and journalist Lis Wiehl’s (www.liswiehlbooks.com) recently wrote about about father’s day and the influence her father and grandfather have in her life. Today’s show will inspire every listener! Lis Wiehl’s post for Thrive Global touched many readers when it went live for Father’s Day. The influence both her Dad and Grand-Dad had on her life and career is inspiring and powerful -- it will touch the heart of listeners everywhere. Dr. Dan reminds us that the Parent Footprint community is based on the principle that who you are and how you live are the keys to successful parenting. To raise happy and healthy children parents must know who they are and how their own experiences as a child influence their own parenting. A happy and healthy parent raises happy and healthy children. Lis and Dr. Dan discuss: 1) Her Thrive Global piece - the influence of parents 2) How her career has influenced her own parenting 3) Turning to another “family” -- How Lis Wiehl managed her relationships (and her emotions) with the victims of the Charles Manson murders when writing her new book HUNTING CHARLES MANSON (www.huntingcharlesmanson.com) Lis Wiehl is a New York Times best-selling author, journalist, former federal prosecutor, and respected legal analyst and commentator. Amanda and Jenn discuss Scotland reads, Cuban fiction, mind-blowing YA, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Separatists by Lis Wiehl and Libby. Questions 1. Hi Ladies! I’ve always wondered if I’d have a need to send in a request to tap into your endless knowledge of books, and the need arose this week! I have been clerking for a federal judge for the past year. My time is quickly coming to an end in early August. Chambers is a tight-knit family of four. I’d love to give a book to each of my colleagues as a going away present and would love help with that! Judge: Is an AVID golfer. I mean really avid. Do you have any good recommendations for golf coffee table books or a narrative nonfiction book about golf? Or really anything golf related? If that is too niche, he also enjoys legal thrillers a la John Grisham, but I would like to recommend him something in that vein but perhaps less mainstream? Judicial assistant: She LOVES to cook. And she is a healthy eater. I think she would enjoy something that focuses on fresh, organic ingredients. She’s also from Florida. Do you have any great cookbook recommendations? Co-clerk: Loves the outdoors and national parks. Avid hiker. I’m thinking a memoir where the author goes on a hiking trip or writes about their time exploring nature etc. I hope that’s descriptive enough and appreciate any help you can offer! Best, –Chantalle 2. I am traveling to Washington D.C. for work at the end of July and I would like some D.C. related reads. These can be fiction or non-fiction but something historical would be nice. –Ashley 3. Hi Ladies! I recently discovered the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon a little over a year ago and just finished reading the 8th book at the end of August. Ever since I opened that first book I have been obsessed with anything and everything related to Scotland. Since it will be 3-4 more years before the next book comes out I would like to read more books set in Scotland to make the waiting easier lol. I’m not a huge reader of nonfiction but would love to try recommendations for fiction and nonfiction on this topic. I have read At The Water’s Edge by Sarah Gruen and I really enjoyed it. I am really enjoying the podcast and my TBR is getting longer and longer everyday. Thanks! –Leslie 4. Hi! I love the show! I would love a recommendation for a fiction book set somewhere in 20th century Latin America. A book with a great story, but also some historical/geographical tidbits in the background. I usually read fantasy or mystery, but I’m up for any genre. Thanks again! –Janine 5. I am so happy this podcast exists! I have been looking for some help with recommendations for ages. My favourite books have all been about women in academia and the world, specifically in the earlier 20th century. I’ve read The Group, but maybe I am looking for a sort of female version of A Separate Peace or Dead Poets Society if you kind of understand what I mean. Sort of like book versions of the Julia Roberts movie Mona Lisa Smile. Thank you so much

Hi, Lis Wiehl here, and we're back with another very intriguing murder case! In this Wiehl of Justice podcast series, we're going to investigate the twists and turns of the Adeline Wilford murder. Investigators were baffled for years over the brutal killing of 64-year old Easton, MD resident Adeline Wilford. There just weren't enough solid leads to make any arrests. A break in the case came after over a dozen years had passed, which resulted in three men being arrested, tried and convicted. Two of the three were sentenced to life in prison. Recently, however, some new evidence has come to light that could possibly exonerate the incarcerated men. That's where The Innocence Project has gotten involved, with its mission of trying to get the convictions of these men overturned. So are the imprisoned men the actual murderers? Or does this new evidence point to someone else? It's a fascinating story that Wiehl of Justice will explore in-depth in episodes to come. But as always, we need to start at the beginning! Here's Episode 1: Just as a reminder, you can subscribe to the Wiehl of Justice podcast on iTunes here. For Android and other podcast apps, please subscribe here.
Lis Wiehl is one of the nation's most prominent trial lawyers and highly regarded commentators. She is also the host of this podcast! Currently, she is the legal analyst and reporter on the Fox News Channel and Bill O'Reilly's sparring partner in the weekly "Is It Legal?" segment on The O'Reilly Factor. Prior to that she was O'Reilly's co-host on the nationally syndicated show The Radio Factor. She is also a Professor of Law at New York Law School. Her column "Lis on Law" appears weekly on FoxNews.com. In this episode we turn the tables on Lis and her former intern/producer Jennifer Williams plays the role of interviewer while Lis is the interviewee. The two talk about Lis's endeavors in the book publishing world, her characters, and how Jennifer actually helped save one of characters from perishing in one of her books. Lis's upcoming book: The Newsmakers TV reporter Erica Sparks has become a superstar overnight. But is it due to her hard work and talent? Or is she at the center of a spiraling conspiracy? Erica Sparks is a beautiful and ambitious reporter who has just landed her dream job at Global News Network in New York. And while it was hard to leave Jenny, her cherished eight-year-old daughter, in the custody of her ex-husband, Erica is determined to succeed in the cutthroat world of big-time broadcasting. She can only hope her troubled past won't come back to sabotage her dreams. Although the wounds from her divorce are still fresh, Erica can't deny the chemistry between her and her new producer, the handsome and empathic Greg Underwood. But a relationship is the last thing she wants right now.
At this point, you may be as sure as Angela Prosinski, the juror from the first trial that I spoke with in episode 4, that Cal murdered his wife. After all, there are a lot of things that, taken as a whole, could equate to Cal being a murderer. You have people who say Cal threatened Michele and was angry and controlling. You have the prosecution telling you that Michele and Cal were in the midst of a bitter divorce, a divorce that Cal did not want. And you have a small amount of blood found in the Harris' estate. Conversely, you may be just as certain that he didn't do it. As Bruce Barket points out, the small amount of blood found in the Harris' estate does not equate to a crime scene - much less, the place where Cal killed Michele. And what about all of the resources dedicated to investigating Cal as the murderer. With all of the attention on him, it seems hard to believe he could have killed his wife and hid the body without someone being the wiser. Tune in to the crew that put it all together. I’m Lis Wiehl, legal analyst at FOX News Channel. But one of my real passions is murder mysteries! The Wiehl of Justice podcast is going to take you on the road and behind the scenes as we look into all the details surrounding big murder mysteries in the hopes that we can find out what really happened! Our first podcast series will deal with the Cal Harris story that’s still being adjudicated in Tioga County, NY. Here’s a very quick backdrop: Michele Harris was a beautiful young woman when she married Calvin Harris – a funny and outgoing man of means. Cal Harris grew up in a prominent business family and owned several car dealerships. If you look at early photos of this family, you'd be looking at what appears to be the perfect family: a happy couple with four beautiful kids. And according to a former nanny for the Harris', it really was a fairy tale complete with the 252-acre estate that the family lived on. But it’s clear that this was not always a perfect or happy marriage. And Michele Harris wanted out. Michele went missing on September 11, 2001 (yes, that September 11), and one of the first persons of interest was Calvin Harris. But despite all the years and extensive searching, neither a body nor a weapon has ever been found, which has left people close to Michele and authorities with questions as to what happened to her. This is the first murder mystery we’re going to try and help unravel on the Wiehl of Justice podcast, and you can participate, too! Please subscribe to my podcast on iTunes here. On Android and other podcast readers, please subscribe here. Take a listen to my podcast introduction below for more details about this very intriguing story, and our podcast mission.
