Allen Gilmore (above, right) plays Ebenezer Scrooge in A Sherlock Carol, a holiday mashup of Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle now running in both New York (where Allen is) and London. A veteran Scrooge (having played him for many years at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago), Allen discusses how Ebenezer Scrooge is one of the great roles, comparing him to Leontes from Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale; how we stand on the shoulders of the Scrooges who've come before us; how the role is self-cleaning; how actors bring their own nasty to Scrooge; and how audiences recognize their nastiness in the character; and how the possibility of redemption is part of what makes A Christmas Carol so popular and enduring. (Length 18:30) (PICTURED: Drew McVety as Sherlock Holmes and Allen Gilmore as Ebenezer Scrooge in Mark Shanahan's A Sherlock Carol, directed by Jen Waldman. The worlds of Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens collide! In today's episode I talk to writer/director Mark Shanahan - who's back on the show to talk more about his play A Sherlock Carol. Along for the ride is his partner in this endeavor, Drew McVety - he stars as Sherlock Holmes and is also one of the producers. After we catch up with Mark and find out all about how Drew portrays Sherlock Holmes, I subject them to another round of the Cozy Christmas Questionnaire - and it turns out these two are full of Christmas spirit, (even if one of them doesn't like Egg Nog...). I also find out that not only are these two incredibly talented people, but they are also some of the kindest people you will ever meet. So settle in for another Cozy Christmas conversation and join us as we chat about A Sherlock Carol and Christmas shopping, music, foods, and memories - and find out why we should all aspire to be like Ebenezer Scrooge! What did the beginnings of the US space programme look like? Who was the strategist who decided to invest in it? And was the starting point President Kennedy's reach-the-moon promise, or President Reagan's 'Star Wars' programme? Dr Mark Shanahan, Associate Professor of Politics at the University of Surrey, unveils his research on the often-unappreciated influence of an earlier US leader: President Eisenhower and his two-term administration between 1953 and 1961. The discussion highlights lessons from the Cold War and their applicability to the great power competition dynamics of today.
Two-thirds of Democratic voters want someone other than Joe Biden to be their party's candidate for the White House in 2024, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll. Their top concern: his age. Joe Biden will turn 80 this year. He's already the oldest American president in history. His predecessor, who wants to run again, is 76. It's not just the American presidency that's gone grey. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is 82. Her second in command, Steny Hoyer, is 83. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell is 80. But how old is too old? What does age exactly mean in politics? What explains America's aging leadership, and does that really hurt the function of democracy? Host Zhao Ying is joined by Aaron Kall, Director of Debate at the University of Michigan, Prof. Aubrey Jewett from the University of Central Florida, and Prof. Mark Shanahan from the University of Surrey.
Dr. Mark Shanahan spoke to Robert Hogge about local politics starting from Reading, then moving further afield to the devolved nations, and the likelihood of Scottish, Irish and Welsh independence.
Deleting Dave is back. Dave Portnoy was fed up with a former Barstool Sports employee but deleted the initial audio talking about it (00:10:00). Howard Stern wants Al Michaels to tell people to get vaccinated on the Super Bowl broadcast (00:26:00). Tim Dillon brilliantly trolls Mark Shanahan of the Boston Globe prompting Joe Rogan to reach out to Shanahan himself (00:53:40). Kevin Clancy seeks guidance from his sherpa (00:37:48). Harrison second guesses Kirk's parody song instincts (00:40:00). Kevin from Malden really irritates Jim Braude and Margery Egan (00:47:30). The Oscars are irrelevant now, Steve Robinson is itching to do something much more.
We're going back to the theater today! And there's a mystery afoot... What happens when the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Ebenezer Scrooge are thrown together? Find out in the new play that debuts today in NYC, A Sherlock Carol. My guest today is Mark Shanahan, he's the writer and director of the play. He comes from an extensive background in acting, writing and directing many plays both for the stage and radio. He stops by and we chat about his new play, the challenges of performing theater safely during a pandemic, and the power of stories - especially those by Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens. Then, I read a Christmas mystery story by Thomas Hardy called "The Thieves Who Couldn't Stop Sneezing." It is a funny short story about a young man named Hubert who stumbles across some thieves planning to rob a nearby mansion. Find out what happens in this charming holiday tale. Mark Shanahan is a writer and reporter for the Boston Globe. He’s also a prostate cancer survivor who developed the podcast Mr. 80 percent for the globe detailing his experience with prostate cancer. After his diagnosis and during treatment, Mark had to re-examine and rebuild relationships and consider what it means to be a man if your sexual function is at risk. Be forewarned, this episode has very frank discussions about sex and anatomy, so if you haven’t had the birds and bees chat with your kids, make sure they’re out of earshot. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Today’s guest on the Product Startup Podcast is Mark Shanahan, a top expert in consumer product distribution and retailers. Previously, Mark had a successful 25 year career at Staples, where he started as a junior product buyer, moved up to running entire product categories, eventually becoming a Vice President. Mark joins Kevin Mako to share valuable insights about how inventors, product startups, and manufacturers can get in the door with buyers at major retail stores, and how they can sell their product once they’ve crossed that threshold. You’ll hear them talk about: What entrepreneurs can do with their physical products to get the best chance of success with major retailers. Mark shares tips and tricks from an insider’s view as a long-time Staples buyer. Questions that buyers often ask entrepreneurs. They will want to know your target market, what your value proposition is, and why you’re legitimate. The components of a well-done pitch. Always remember to be concise, clear, and transparent. The importance of being honest with a potential retailer. The buyer needs to know that you are reliable and can be trusted. Things to consider when meeting buyers: maintain eye contact, don’t get too personal, take notes, and be as brief as possible. Welcome to Light On Light Through, Episode 80, in which you will hear the complete, uncut radio play of "The Chronology Protection Case," recorded before a live audience at the Mark Goodson Theater in the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City in September 2002. The radio play is based on my novelette, "The Chronology Protection Case," published in Analog Magazine 1995. The novelette was nominated for the Nebula Award by the Science Fiction Writers of America, was reprinted six times, and led to two other novelettes with the lead character - Dr. Phil D'Amato - and three novels, including The Silk Code, which won the Locus Award for Best First Novel of 1999. Jay Kensinger released a short film based on the novelette in 2002. Mark Shanahan wrote the radio play, with Paul Levinson (me) and Jay Kensinger. The script performed at the Museum of Television and Radio was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best Radio Play by the Mystery Writers of America. Mark later recorded a studio production of the play, which was released by Audible.com.
