Thesis remarkably rich tasting and full-flavored, more like a stew than a soup, thanks in large part to the generous amount of roasted tomatoes that serve as the base. You can prepare the tomatoes and make the soup base 1 day in advance. Then it is just a matter of reheating the soup and adding the scallops. The key to keeping them tender is to add them right before serving. With crusty bread and fruit and cheese, this makes a stylish light lunch or supper.

Unlikely as it sounds Anneka Rice has long been part of a small painting group run by the extraordinary artist, Maggi Hambling. Over the years they've developed a strong bond. As Maggi puts it, the painting group is 'like family' to her. In this special episode of Open Country, Anneka travels to Suffolk to find out more about the county that has inspired Maggi's work: from her brooding seascapes, to the once controversial but now lauded Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. They start the day in a dank, dark, tree-covered ditch where Maggi hid as a teenager when she was too nervous to attend a painting class. Then to Maggi's home, where - leaving the verdant overgrowth of her garden - they enter her studio where green (a colour she hates) disappears… there are blacks and greys and just a bit of pink. Next, onto the bleak but beautiful beach at Sizewell, it's here in the shadow of the nuclear power plant that the churning North Sea most speaks to Maggi. And finally to the huge steel sculpture of the Scallop on Aldeburgh beach… a tribute to Benjamin Britten and now one of the area's most popular attractions. As Maggi drives Anneka from location to location, the warmth, humour and friendship between the two shines out. Please see the 'related links' box on the Open Country webpage for this episode to find more info about the Cedric Morris/Arthur Lett-Haines exhibition in July 2024.Presenter: Anneka Rice Producer: Karen Gregor

Despite the name, I was still so unprepared for how very clear much of the water is in the Crystal River region of Florida. From snaking like a teal ribbon around trees and under bridges, to reflecting clouds like a salty mirror, on the day I went out on it, our boat sped closer on its glassy surface to a horizon already dotted with other anchored boats. Every year, fishing folks make the pilgrimage to this area of Florida to dive for bay scallops, and for those who grow up in the region, scalloping season is a cultural tradition, and usually one that begins as soon as a child can swim. Katie Jo Davis, owner of KD Outdoors Fishing Charters, remembers taking naps in the fish box on a boat before she could even walk. She's been fishing and scalloping these waters her whole life, and after 6 years in the U.S. Army, worked as a fishing guide in Canada before making her way back to her home waters. Bay scallops are the more petite cousins of sea scallops, the common “scallops” that show up on restaurant menus, but commercial harvest of bay scallops is prohibited in Florida, so one of the easiest ways to taste this very local delicacy is to catch them yourself. Captain Katie Jo knows just where to find them.
Scallop is a common name that encompasses various species of marine bivalve mollusks in the taxonomic family Pectinidae, the scallops.

Salty talks: Conversations on Sustainable Aquaculture in Maine
The market in the US for scallops is huge! Dana Morse from Maine Sea Grant talks about the status of Scallop culture in Maine, emphasizing just how much knowledge and care goes into growing these animals. Plus, you can enjoy a little history lesson as well! Maine and Aomori Prefecture, a state in Japan, have a sister-state relationship dating back to 1889 when a ship set sail from Bath, ME. Since then, we've learned a lot from Japan about different grow-out methods, and interesting products you can bring to market (like scallop ice cream !!) Tune in to learn more from Dana!
Scallops might sound like an unlikely cause of war - but I'm sure you'll remember, not that long ago - these innocent creatures of the sea almost pushed Britain and France to the brink. It's Bugle 4079 - I'm joined by Alice Fraser, and of course - we couldn't miss the opportunity for some seafood based puns. In this recipe, we give the classic po' boy an umami boost by adding miso to the mayonnaise spread and a delightful crunch by using fried Japanese scallops. The po' boy is a classic Louisiana sandwich, filled with fried seafood, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and mayonnaise—a perfect canvas for customizing with unique ingredients. Japanese scallops taste like they come from the sea without being fishy. In Japan, they are commonly enjoyed as sashimi, sushi, or served grilled in the shell. This video was produced by The Culinary Institute of America as an industry service to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Author and professor Andrew Reiner returns to Paternal for the latest in a series of special episodes, this time to discuss how and why men often neglect to examine and express their emotional needs in a relationship, and what happens when they seethe in silence. Reiner is the author of the 2020 book Better Boys, Better Men and earlier this year wrote an article for The Washington Post about why men are often taught very young to diminish, or even ignore, their emotions in relationships. The article - which featured Paternal host Nick Firchau and a story about a scallop dinner gone wrong - subsequently became a lightning rod for comments about how, when, and why men show emotion. Reiner is a professor in the honors college at Towson University in Maryland, and teaches a course there called “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He previously came on episode #61 of Paternal in May 2022. Learn more about Paternal and sign up for our newsletter at www.paternalpodcast.com. You can also email host Nick Firchau at nick@paternalpodcast.com with any comments or suggestions for men he should profile on the show. In this episode your host, and favorite angler :) George Scocca does a deep dive so to speak into the issues we're seeing with the Jewel of the East End the Peconic Bay Scallop. Did you know that the Peconic Bay Scallop is the New York State shell? Did you know that this amazing creature can live for over 20 years? Did you know that these tasty little morsels are filter feeders and play an important role in the eco system of our bays?George interviews Dr. Stephen Tettelbach Shellfish Ecologist/Professor Emeritus of Biology about the current state of the Peconic Bay Scallop and what is believed to be causing the die-off.There is a lot of history behind the Peconic Bay Scallop and it is part of the overall fabric of the beautiful body of water. In the 20's mostly women would become "openers" and "earn $3 a day and still have time to get home to cook dinner."They also get into the collapse of the Long Island Lobster fishery as well as the effects of the taking over of the Asian crab. This is one of a series we will be doing over the coming months on Our Changing Waters. Please join us for an interesting and informative show. Send any questions you may have to george@nyangler.com or stop by newyorkfishingpodcast.com and leave a voice message that will be played on a future show.

For the fourth year in a row, researchers who monitor the bay scallop population in the Peconic Estuary say there are clear signs of a massive die-off of the valuable shellfish unfolding on local bay bottoms. Biologists from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program say that they have seen almost 100 percent mortality of adult bay scallops at monitoring sites in Northwest Harbor and Orient Harbor. A parasite is likely contributing to the scallops' demise, but record-high water temperatures in the bays caused by climate change are also adding to the stresses the dwindling population faces. Senior reporter Michael Wright joins the editors on the podcast this week to discuss the plight of Peconic bay scallops and what's being done in an effort to reverse the trend.
