Welcome to episode 142 of Ninjas Are Butterflies, the comedy and conspiracy podcast that boldly connects dots that absolutely should not be connected. This week, we kick things off with the rise of the new Pope. Who is he? Where did he come from? Then we head to Boston in 1919 to revisit a forgotten disaster that sounds made up but is very, very real: the Great Molasses Flood. A 15-foot wave of sticky death swept through the city, and somehow no one knows about it. And if that's not enough, we flip through early WWII documents that suggest dinosaurs may still be alive in parts of Africa. Yes—actual dinosaurs. No—we're not kidding. Maybe. Probably. If you love conspiracy theories, weird history, and chaotic humor from people who are wildly underqualified to talk about any of this, you're in the right place. Perfect for listeners searching for: Vatican conspiracies, Boston molasses disaster, are dinosaurs still alive, weird WWII documents, cryptids in Africa, funny history podcasts, or the absolute strangest way to learn about real events. New episodes every week. Follow us and never miss a theory, a meltdown, or a 20-minute tangent about prehistoric lizards with top-secret clearance. Did you know that Boston once had a sticky disaster? In this episode of Auntie Jo Jo's Library, we're diving into the Great Molasses Flood of 1919—a day when a giant tank burst, sending a wave of syrup through the streets! Tune in for this unbelievable (and surprisingly sweet) piece of history. The Boston Globe Archives: bostonglobe.comBoston Historical Society: bostonhistory.orgNational Geographic: nationalgeographic.com
January 15, 1919 was an unusually warm day in Boston, a welcome change from the typically cold temperatures Bostonians had experienced in the previous days. A little after 12:30 pm, the residents of the city's North End neighborhood were going about their usual routines when all of the sudden they felt the ground shake, followed by a loud rumbling roar, as though the train had gone off the tracks. Then, without warning, a wave of molasses—reportedly fifty feet high—flooded the neighborhood with more than 2.5 million gallons of syrup, destroying buildings, toppling the nearby elevated train line, and killing twenty-one people. One of the lesser told and remembered stories in Boston's history, the great molasses flood of 1919 caused untold damage to one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and injured more than 150 people, in addition to the twenty-one dead. Yet for an event so remarkable and strange, it is still unknown precisely what caused the Purity Distilling Company's molasses storage tank to burst and dump its contents across the North End, making it one of Boston's most bizarre pieces of folklore.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBoston Daily Globe. 1919. The Molassacre. A Molasstrophe. That's what happens when 2 million gallons of molasses explodes onto the narrow streets of the North End, in a bizarre and unbelievable story of Boston's dark wave of history. On January 15, 1919, a 26 million pound dark wave of stickiness surged through the North End of Boston, seemingly gaining strength as it rolled toward Boston Harbor. A massive swell toppled telephone poles, twisted metal trolley tracks, crushed freight cars, flooded basements, and ripped buildings from foundations. Chest-deep molasses warmed from the above average temperatures thinned out into a coating three feet deep that would grab people like human fly paper, animals struggled to get free of it, only sinking further.I will be at the True Crime and Paranormal Podcast Festival in Denver on July 12-14.Crime of the Truest KindMassachusetts and New England crime storiesHosted by Anngelle Wood@crimeofthetruestkindSupport the Show.Follow Instagram | Facebook | Twitter X | TikTok | Threads | YouTube For show notes and source information, visit CrimeoftheTruestKind.comThis podcast has minimal profanity but from time to time you get an f-bomb.Become a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkind Music included in episodes from Joe "onlyone" Kowalski - Joe Got A New Heart FundDug McCormack's Math Ghosts. and Shredding by Andrew King

In 1919, a wall of molasses washed through the North End. I don't think we talk about this enough! In this episode, we're talking with Lisa Mullan Perkins of Uwila Warrior about this sticky incident and its impact on the city. Plus, my pitch for the next great HBO Miniseries, working title: Sweet Nightmares: The Great Molasses Flood. We've also got an update on my emotional state and a lot of questions about Wally, the Red Sox's wall-dwelling mascot. In this week's BONUS Hasty History episode, we will be discussing the Great Molasses Flood of 1919. The Great Molasses Flood was quite literally a flood of molasses that swept through Boston, Massachusetts in January of 1919. And while a flood of sticky molasses may sound amusing, this incident would turn tragic with 150 people injured and another 21 dead. Professor and Civil Engineer Mark Rossow put it perfectly when he said of the incident, “First you kind of laugh at it, then you read about it, and it was horrible.” So let's talk about it! Hasty History BONUS episodes are no-nonsense, crash course, cram session History lessons. No cocktail segment, no ads, no bloopers. Just a quick download of some heavy History content. The episode delves into the catastrophic Great Molasses Flood of 1919 in Boston, caused by the collapse of a massive molasses tank owned by Purity Distilling Co. The disaster led to loss of lives, legal battles, and ultimately influenced American legislation towards stricter industrial regulations and safety measures.
There are many types of of sweetener that a person can choose from. Some come in granular form like sugar, while others come in a syrup form like corn syrup. Another is molasses which is considered to be a liquid sugar that contains sucrose, and small amounts of fructose and glucose. It isn't sweet like refined sugar, and is usually thicker and stickier than other liquid based sweeteners.Molasses is the ingredient that makes brown sugar brown, and gives its flavour and moisture. It is also used to give moisture and consistency to many different bakery items like cookies, gingerbread, and pies. It gives thickness to baked beans, and sauces, and it is also used in distilling rum. It used to be the primary sweetener used until refined sugar pushed it towards the back of people's cupboards. In the year 1919; molasses was everywhere. But in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States; saying that molasses was everywhere is an understatement. It is because of molasses that twenty one individuals died, and an additional one hundred and fifty were injured in a disaster that is still spoken about today. So get comfortable my spooky friends…you are about to hear the tale of the Great Molasses Flood. We got merch!
