Newly discovered files shed light on the creation of the Seattle icon and the fight over who deserves the credit for its distinctive look. Hear all about it in this special preview of the new Crosscut podcast, Crosscut Reports. When the Space Needle rose quickly on the Seattle city skyline, the response was varied. Some loved it, some hated it. Some likened it to a flower blossoming, others said it resembled a mushroom cloud. The Cold War was on everyone's mind. So was the future. The Needle was supposed to represent the Space Age, a bright future that looked to the stars. It was also supposed to represent the aspirations of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, also called the Century 21 Exposition, and reflect the forward-looking city itself. But in the fall of 1961, as the Needle tower neared completion and the citizenry warmed to it, controversy broke out, an all-out war of words between the architects — Victor Steinbrueck and his boss John “Jack” Graham, Jr. That there was a war is no secret — the conflict played out in the press at the time. But the dispute between these two groundbreaking architects goes deeper than previously understood. New files discovered in the dirt cellar of Steinbrueck's Eastlake home reveal that Graham sought censure of the man who provided the sketches that gave the Space Needle's tower its unique shape. This and other revelations surrounding the Space Needle's creation that were found in those files are the subject of this, the first episode of the first season of Crosscut Reports. To listen to the next two episodes of this series on Victor Steinbrueck, search for Crosscut Reports wherever you listen, or go to crosscut.com/podcasts. Much of the Space Age has been driven by global politics. In the early days, the United States and the Soviet Union raced to send the first person to space, to send probes to the planets, and to land men on the Moon. Things began to change in the 1970s, when American and Soviet spacecraft linked up in orbit. Yet geopolitics continues to play a role in space exploration. An example is a mission known as ExoMars, a joint project of Russia and Europe. Its launch was delayed a couple of years by Covid. Its new launch window opened this week. But earlier this year, Europe split from Russia on ExoMars and other space projects — a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That could delay the launch until 2028 or later. ExoMars consists of two parts — a landing platform and the Rosalind Franklin rover. Russia was providing the lander and the booster rocket, and Europe built the rover. The planned landing site was Oxia Planum — a smooth plain that might once have held liquid water. The rover would analyze the rocks and dirt to try to figure out when the water was there, how much was there, and how it affected the formation of minerals on the surface. The goal was to figure out if the region might once have been suitable for life. The European Space Agency has said it'll try to find another partner to build the lander and provide the launch. But that'll take time — a lengthy delay in space caused by a war here on Earth.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

With the scare resource of water now a global issue, energy crisis and microfibers from our clothing making their way into our food chain, what can be done about these challenges? Oxwash has created an innovative washing and drying technology model, based on the design for recycling resources in space, to address challenges associated with garment cleaning that is both water- and energy- intensive. In addition, Oxwash's model solves both the release of microfibers and toxic detergents down into the drainage system and on to our water sources. Kellee talks with Kyle Grant, CEO of Oxwash about how its technology and laundering model are changing how clothing can be cleaned with minimal impact to the environment. Kyle Grant is an ex-NASA scientist and synthetic biologist, who is focused on combatting climate change starting with an unusual location: your laundry. Oxwash offers eco-friendly laundry-cleaning services for individuals and corporations. Its environmentally-focused technology is making laundry-cleaning sustainable for the planet. The global “green cleaning” market projected to reach $11.6 billion by 2029 (source: Yahoo Finance). Oxwash has been featured in leading publications including Forbes and Tech Crunch. The company is ventured-backed by Biz Stone (Twitter co-founder), Indeed founder Paul Forster, Holly Branson, Access VC, Pentland Group, Ascension Ventures, Vala Capital, Truesight Ventures, 8 Dimension Ventures, System Capital Management and Khimji Ramdas LLC.

What is the value of space? That was the question posed by Inmarsat that resulted in a 51 page report that explores the value of space across a wide range of business leaders and citizens from 11 countries around the world. On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, host Tom Patton talks with Edwina Paisley, senior director of spacecraft programs for Inmarsat, which commissioned the survey. The company received some 20,000 responses to the survey, and some of the results are not only interesting, but surprising. For instance, the "What on Earth is the Value of Space" report found that 21% of people associate space with ‘aliens', 14% with ‘science fiction' and 10% with ‘Star Wars' – compared with just 8% for ‘communications & connectivity' and 3% for ‘broadcasting & television'. As memories of the first Space Age recede, maybe perceptions are being shaped more by popular culture – and less by the true role of space in everyday life. Younger people who have grown up with cell phones and the Internet tend to be among those who most closely associate space with aliens and UFOs, and also with billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. By contrast, older people who grew up during the first space race see space as being more about exploration and research, as well as radio and television communications. That's just a tiny sampling of the results of the report. Clearly, there is a lot of diversity of opinion concerning the value of space, and the industry has a lot of work to do ... and a lot of opportunity ... when it comes to changing those perceptions. How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. The podcast is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Overcast, Pocketcasts and Radio Public.

For centuries, astronomers have claimed to see strange lights and other phenomena on the Moon. Ranging from points of light, to mysterious colored bands, and even images since the dawn of the Space Age depicting curious structures, many have wondered if Earth's Moon could be far more mysterious than most would ever contend.  This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we examine sightings of mysterious transient lunar phenomena (TLP) observed in locations like the Aristarchus crater, as well as a mysterious set of structures or "spires" that have caused debate for decades. Could there be more to the Moon and its many secrets than conventional astronomical thinking has taught us?  The story doesn't end here... become an X Subscriber and get access to even more weekly content and monthly specials. Since the dawn of the Space Age, there have been questions about the development of experimental technologies, and whether some aerospace innovations may have been left out of the history books. Could some black program developments account for modern accounts of unidentified aerial phenomena, or are these craft really otherworldly in origin?  Joining us this week on The Micah Hanks Program is researcher Olav Phillips, author of books like "The Secret Space Age" and others that discuss secret space programs, the concept of breakaway civilizations, Nazi UFOs, and much more.  The story doesn't end here... become an X Subscriber and get access to even more weekly content and monthly specials.
