ALAN GREENSPAN: Well, first of all, the Federal Reserve is an independent agency, and that means, basically, that there is no other agency of government which can overrule actions that we take. So long as that is in place and there is no evidence that the administration or the Congress or anybody else is requesting that we do things other than what we think is the appropriate thing, then what the relationships are don’t, frankly, matter. And I’ve had very good relationships with presidents. 1. [x] Understanding Fractional Reserve Banking: How It Fuels Economic Growth Fractional reserve banking is the banking system most countries use today. It requires banks to hold only a fraction of the money their customers deposit. That amount is the reserve requirement, and in most countries, it is set by the central bank. Banks can loan the rest of their deposits to other customers, which serves to expand the economy. It works like this. Banks accept deposits from individuals and businesses providing them with savings and checking accounts in return. Banks can loan out the bulk of those deposits to other customers to buy homes or cars, start businesses, or to fund other projects. If a customer deposits $100,000 into a bank and the reserve requirement is 5%, the bank can loan $95,000 out to other customers. Once the bank has loaned out $95,000, it in essence has created $195,000. Customers borrow that $95,000 and deposit some or all of it into other banks. If the reserve requirement is still 5%, then the other banks can loan $90,250 to new customers. And the process keeps repeating itself. Financial crisis occurs when the fractional banking system breaks down and the money supply does not expand. Many US banks had to shut down during the Great Depression, because so many people attempted to withdraw their money at the same time. Today, safeguards exist to prevent such an occurrence. 1. Men i vuxen ålder har han aldrig testat sig själv på platta lopp. Varför gör han det nu, vad kan han göra på maraton och hur kommer han lägga om sin träning mot loppet? Per Engdahl (1909-1994) var aktiv fascist redan 1920-talet och kom efter andra världskriget att spela en central roll i omvandlandet av nationell högerextremism till en internationell rörelse. Han var också nära vän med Ikeagrundaren Ingvar KampradPer Engdahl grundande den fascistiska Nysvenska rörelsen, som aldrig blev någon massrörelse i Sverige. Han levde ända fram till 1994 och hann med att umgås med ledande nazister i Hitlertyskland, hjälpa nazister att fly till Sydamerika samt att omorganisera den europeiska högerextrema rörelsen efter andra världskriget.I maj 1951 organiserade han en europeisk högerextrem konferens i Malmö där han förenade både nazister och fascister i samma rörelse. Per Engdahl blev också chef för rörelsens internationella förbindelsekontor i Malmö. Han fortsatte att umgås flitigt med ledande personer i Tredje riket efter kriget och besökte på 1960-talet Francos Spanien.Nysvenska rörelsen blev under 1960-talet helt marginaliserade. Men ledande figurer i rörelsen var med och grundade den främlingsfientliga organisationen Bevara Sverige svenskt. Därmed blev Per Engdahl en viktig länk mellan fascismen och nazismen under andra världskriget till nutida främlingsfientliga rörelser som Bevara Sverige Svenskt som i sin tur blev grunden till dagens Sverigedemokraterna.IKEA-grundaren Ingvar Kamprad vägrade att ta avstånd från sin fascistiska vän. Kamprad bidrog också med pengar till rörelsen och gav ut Per Engdahls bok ”Politisk allmänbildning”. När Ingvar Kamprad gifte sig första gången 1950 var Per Engdahl inte bara inbjuden utan också ombedd att hålla tal.I reprisen av avsnitt 32 av podden Historia Nu samtalar programledare Urban Lindstedt med Elisabeth Åsbrink som är journalist och författare. Hon har skrivit boken 1947 som väver samman fascisten Per Engdahls öde, med judiska flyktingar och Simone de Beauvoir. Punkare, beatniks och kristna subkulturer kan ta över världen. Men att den samtida litteraturen tillhör dem är ett missförstånd, menar Torbjörn Elensky. Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radios app. ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Kultur är ett vanskligt begrepp. Antingen är det för smalt, och omfattar bara det som personer som är ointresserade av sådant kallar finkultur, eller så är det för brett, och inbegriper i stort sett allt mänskligt. För att skapa ordning kan man försöka specificera med olika förled, vilket Horace Engdahl gjorde i det tal han höll 2006, med den insinuanta titeln Högkultur som subkultur?Hade han rätt?Ja, om man får tro flera av vår tids skribenter. För sjutton år efter att det hållits trycktes talet på nytt i tidskriften Essä, med ett flertal tillhörande kommentarer. Även om vissa av författarna tog visst spjärn mot Engdahls tankar så stod den övergripande bilden klar: Högkulturen var marginaliserad till subkultur.Åh, jag kan verkligen önska att det stämde. Men tyvärr tror jag inte det. För även om Horace Engdahl talade om högkultur, så syftade han på något mycket snävare: Den konstnärligt relevanta skönlitteraturen. Det han egentligen ondgjorde sig över var hur den marginaliseras. Och då framstår talet om subkultur som ett försök att göra litteraturen cool, som ett sista räddningsförsök. Ge den förnyad vitalitet.Litteraturen har ju dock fortfarande viss status, som upprätthålls inte minst av Svenska Akademien, vilken omger den med en air av finhet. Vilket kan vara en del av problemet. Subkulturer kan vara elitistiska, men de uppstår aldrig i eliten.När vi pratar om kultur måste vi inse att villkoren för de olika konstarterna är helt olika. Konstmusiken lever nästan helt på offentligt stöd, men den är samtidigt ytterst vital, med verkligt internationell relevans. Dess publik är global och kan därför bli väldigt stor, även för sådant som uppfattas som smalt. Den kan vara exklusiv, men är inte någon subkultur. Konsten - måleri, skulptur, installationer, koncept och så vidare - fungerar på flera olika sätt, det finns så att säga olika nivåer. Men talar vi om den verkligt framgångsrika är det en dynamisk blandning av kritik, privata samlare och offentliga institutioner som lyfter konstnärskap till kändisskap. Konsten har länge präglats av sin unika marknadssituation, men den är verkligen inte på väg att bli någon subkultur. Där finns fortfarande pengar, och inte i gamla stiftelser, utan från nya, superrika elitkonsumenter. Att det på ett par decennier i Stockholm öppnade tre privata konsthallar säger allt. Det är knappast några obskyra rockklubbar.Filmen då? Det finns högkulturell film som visas på festivaler världen runt. En del kan få kommersiellt genomslag. Det är den nyaste av konstformer, och i den samsas en folklig mångmiljardmarknad, nationella prestigeprojekt, geniala auteurer och kommersiell smörja. Det finns filmklubbar med subkulturell prägel, men filmkonsten är inte någon subkultur.Litteraturen är speciell på flera sätt. Under årtusenden är det varit härifrån de andra konstarterna fått sina motiv. Nationella gemenskaper vilar ofta på just litterära verk, Italiens Dante, Englands Shakespeare, Tysklands Goethe. Under ett par hundra år har den skönlitterära prosan utgjort kulturens centrum. Det är den folk först tänker på då de tänker på kanon. En konstart som länge kunde förena exklusivitet och prestige med en stor marknad. Nu har den emellertid på mindre än femtio år, snabbt tappat stora delar av sin publik och sin prestige. Vad blir då kvar? Blir den en subkultur bara för att den blir mindre? Är det inte snarare så att den är på väg att bli irrelevant?För en företeelse blir inte en subkultur bara för att den är smal. Det räcker inte. Subkulturer arbetar med särskilda uttryck både för att skapa gemenskap inom gruppen och avskärma dem som inte hör till: klädsel, musik, uttryck, gester. Visst kan man inkludera historiska rörelser, men de mest typiska och kända subkulturerna är alla delar av den ungdomskultur som började utvecklas efter andra världskriget. Beatniks, hippies, mods, skinheads, punkare, synthare, hiphopare och så vidare. Lätt identifierbara. Ofta bildades de av ungdomar från arbetarklassen, som ett sätt att utveckla självkänsla och gemenskap i opposition mot de vuxna och samhällets auktoriteter. De har dessutom vanligen varit fientliga sinsemellan. I början av 80-talet var det stora slagsmål mellan punkare och kickers, till exempel. Är det detta som väntar litteraturen? Slagsmål kanske vore bättre än ljum samstämmighet åtminstone. Men nej, jag tror inte det.Punken är medelålders, men fortfarande kan man se tonåringar glida över Sergels torg med skinnjacka med nitar och anarkist-A:n. De vågar kanske inte använda riktiga säkerhetsnålar i näsan, eller måla svastikor på ryggen längre, men ändå. Subkulturer har i våg efter våg präglat nya generationer och de har ofta gått från att vara små och utmanande till att påverka hela kulturen i vid mening. Beatniks blev mode på nolltid. Hippies befriade vår sexualitet. Punken gick från att vara ett långfinger mot alla över huvud taget som var äldre än 15 till att på djupet påverka mode, design, konst, musik, inte minst genom idealet att göra det själv, do-it-yourself. Är Horace Engdahl på väg att bli punkare? Drömmen om subkulturen är drömmen om ungdomen. Men det enda säkra är att vi alla bara blir äldre.Nästan all kulturell förnyelse efter världskrigen har bubblat upp från subkulturerna. Och går man längre tillbaka och vidgar begreppet gäller detsamma den heroiska modernismens pionjärer, surrealister, dadaister, futurister och andra som ville omstörta hela det existerande etablissemanget. Även 1800-talets dekadenter och dandyer, romantiker och revolutionärer var på sätt och vis subkulturer, som med tiden tog över. Stravinskys Våroffer buades ut på premiären och impressionisterna, som numera pryder så många affischer, muggar och bordsunderlägg att de blivit uttjatade, refuserades av de högkulturella experterna och öppnade sin egen salong istället, som riktiga punkare. Det går att hitta flera exempel på hur subkulturella strömningar tagit över hela samhällen. Kristendomens framväxt under senantiken är ett paradexempel: från att ha varit slavars, kvinnors och förtrycktas religion svällde den och tog på några hundra år över hela Romarriket.Det skulle kunna komma en litterär subkultur. En ny grupp romantiker, med utmanande kläder och interna tidskrifter. Visst. Men högkulturen, och särskilt litteraturen, håller inte på att bli någon subkultur. Den håller på att bli marginell. Jag hoppas fortfarande på förnyad vitalitet i skönlitteraturen, även om den aldrig igen blir den massmarknadsprodukt den var under halvtannat århundrade. Men den förnyelsen, som kanske redan pågår långt ifrån salongerna, i någon subkultur i en förort till Jakarta, kommer vi inte att känna igen förrän den redan är på väg att bli mainstream. In this episode #227 available on all listening platforms, I spoke with Petter Engdahl, Swedish international level cross-country skier, trailer and ultra trailer of the Adidas Terrex team. In this episode, we will talk about Petter's life story and sporting past, which he spent practicing different sports, and talk about the period when he realized that he could become one of the best cross-country skiers in the world. He will return with us to his development and his international career which saw him participate in events such as the World Cup in 2019. We will then discuss the way in which he gradually switched to the practice of Sky Running and then trail Running.He will explain to us the reasons which pushed him to abandon his career as a cross-country skier to devote himself to mountain and trail running and will return with us to his vision of the practice as well as his most beautiful performance ever achieved during the CCC 2022. Race during which he set the record in less than 10 hours. We will finally discuss its future and its 2024 objectives and broaden the discussion on its vision of this booming community. You will hear that Petter always has a very detailed and objective analysis of the evolution of our discipline. In this episode, we talk with Tanna Engdahl, the spiritual leader for the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, located in Southwest Washington state. She is also an associate supervisor of the Clark Conservation District and a board member with the Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Her career started in the 1960s as one of the first Native American television journalists. She worked in local TV news in Seattle. Tanna went on to work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and as Public Affairs Chief for both National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management. She is the founder of the Cowlitz Medicine Women

Petter is a professional trailrunner/skier for the Adidas Terrex team. In 2022 Petter won the high profile Transvulcania race in La Palma and the CCC race at UTMB, setting a new record,  amongst other races leaving him with a top 10 ranking in the trailrunning world. He holds the fastest known time for Kebnekaise (sweden's highest mountain) which is 7 km and 1460 meters of ascent, including a glacier and a Via Ferrata route (without safety equipment). His skiing achievements include a 2nd in the U23 and 4th in the open Swedish championships. Aside from all this, Petter is studying his master's in Industrial Design at NTNU in Trondheim. Nu får vi äntligen höra Petter Engdahls historia i podden! Det här är killen som sprang rakt in i världseliten inom ultratrail i somras då han vann CCC under UTMB-veckan och dessutom satte nytt banrekord. Petter föddes 1994 – praktiskt taget med skidor på fötterna, och hade tidigare flera framgångar inom längdskidåkningen. 2016 började han springa i Skyrunning-serien och fastnade direkt och 2018 kom han tvåa i Skyrunning World Cup efter självaste Kilian Jornet. 2021 började han springa för det storsatsande teamet Adidas TERREX och 2022 kom det gigantiska genombrottet där Petter visade att han är en av världens allra bästa ultratrail-löpare, då han vann och satte nytt banrekord på CCC under UTMB-veckan i Chamonix, med tiden 9:53:02 på distansen 100 km och över 6100 höjdmeter. In January of 2015, Nicole joined the National Parks Foundation charged with formalizing the organization's planned giving department. By 2016, she was tapped to lead the efforts of three major fundraising groups all under one big umbrella including direct response giving, mid-level giving, and estate gifts. That means her department is responsible for all park giving from the nickle in the point-of-sale jar to bequests. See? Nicole Engdahl is a park person. She's been practicing her nonprofit fundraising craft for over twenty years having helped grow the domestic estate giving program for Special Olympics International and planned giving for the National Geographic Society. It takes an extraordinary set of communications skills to navigate nonprofit giving in our current global context. How do you communicate your mission in such a way as to inspire and connect with donors, motivating them to generosity and benevolence for your organization when there is so very much need in the world all around us?
