This October, we're looking at the book of Acts which begins with Jesus ascending to heaven and a promise from angels that this same Jesus will return. The rest of the book depicts the Church carrying on the ministry of 'this same Jesus' in the same way that He had demonstrated the nature of God's Kingdom in his incarnate life. We are in that great tradition of following and demonstrating that same Jesus, and our series in Acts is something of a blueprint for His Church to follow in our own time as we point to the one who is the same 'yesterday, today and forever.'Come on the journey with us either in person or on the weekly livestream.

When Brittany and Matt Dobson set out to find suitable, well fitting outdoor camouflage gear for their two boys, they hit a giant wall.  They found that there was very little to no options for camo clothes for small kids. The challenges of that search sparked the idea and passion to create Tiny Goose Apparel to ensure that all other parents who wish to raise their children in the outdoors didn't have to face the same challenges they had when it came to outfitting their kids in warm, comfortable camo clothes. They set out to make their company unique from the ground up with their own camo design, the highest quality kids camo on the market and unrivaled customer service/accessibility to Canada & USA.  Their roots run deep into waterfowl, but they feel their products are suitable for any outdoor adventure that your little ones can get into. This is their story - enjoy!!#GoHuntBirds | #evolve | #ShareBirdHuntingwww.GoHuntBirds.com

In First Corinthians, we see how Paul is calling for the believers to mature in their faith. They made a big deal of small insignificant issues the church faced. When we look at some of what they were struggling with, we actually can see struggles the church today struggles with. To sum up some of what Paul was saying, we need to get over ourselves and realize that our own wisdom is nothing compared to Christ.

November 5/6 in Glasgow saw some of the largest political mobilisations since the onslaught of the Covid pandemic. The catalyst was the bosses' summit, COP26, a forum to find ‘solutions' to limit global warming, but more importantly, to save the capitalist system. The first protest on the Friday saw a march of up to 20,000 strong – which was an overwhelmingly youthful demonstration organised by Fridays for Future, with a huge openness to the ideas that a systemic change to the profit-driven rottenness of capitalism is necessary. The Saturday demo, organised by the COP Coalition, was a larger demonstration of around 70,000 and not so youthful, but nevertheless the widespread lack of faith in COP to deliver a workable solution for the vast majority of humanity was clear to see. This episode is a recording of the post demo meeting organised by the Socialist Party's sister organisation - Socialist Party Scotland and the CWI. We hear from Matt Dobson from Socialist Party Scotland and Mark Best from the Socialist Party. After tens of thousands marched and walked out in Glasgow and across the world in response to the failure of the UN COP26 summit, many are discussing what next for the climate strike movement. The situation is critical. Major capitalist powers, despite all their rhetoric around the Glasgow Climate pact, are stepping up oil production and using reserves to combat an energy price hike. How is mass pressure going to be built to fight for the aspirations of the climate movement when the capitalists meet again in Egypt for COP27? The environmental crisis wrought by unchecked capitalist greed is just one of the clearest examples of how the that system offers no future for the vast majority of humanity. Workers and youth are increasingly drawing that conclusion. We would appeal to them to discuss with us, join us and fight for the socialist transformation of society. All throughout scripture we see that God's methods and His timing point to His strength not ours. No matter what we face, or how long we wait, we also see that God always fulfills His promises. During October at our 7pm services, we're looking at the Gospel of Mark. 3 October 2021 - 7pm ServiceHope Has a Name SeriesDuring October at our 7pm services, we're looking at the book of Mark. The apostle Mark's gospel is fast paced and concise, sharing an overview of key facets about Jesus' ministry and the good news He gives to us. This week, Matt is looking at what Mark says about God's plan to prepare the way for Jesus and ultimately His restoration for the world. You can go deeper with this topic on your own or in your small group using the discussion notes below.DISCUSSION NOTESRead Mark 1Have you ever wondered why John the Baptist needed to come before Jesus? Surely God could have arrived unannounced onto the scene of human history.1. In what way did Jesus need someone to prepare the way for him?If the Incarnation was just about God showing us what he was like (Col 1v19 and Heb 1v3) through Jesus' teaching, healing, miracle and lifestyle then maybe he wouldn't have needed any preparation. But God is interested in forgiving us, rescuing us and restoring a friendship with him once again.2. From reading John's message to people, what was the content and how did he “prepare the way”?John 1v31 but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”In the wilderness with all the trimmings of life removed, people became aware of themselves and their hearts were softened to realise that they weren't that good.3. How do you see these four things working out in your life as you seek to follow Jesus and prepare a way for Him to break into your world?RepentanceTo turn round from going my own way and start following God's way. Galatians 5v19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.Ephesians 5 v3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.ConfessionTo admit and own up to my faults and failings.James 5v16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.ForgivenessShame taken away, restored to God, washed clean, guilt removed.John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!Baptism in the Holy SpiritHow can we live a holy life making way for Jesus? We need the power and work of the Holy Spirit. How do you allow Jesus to fill you with his Spirit?

Of course that doesn't mean we don't care for one another, quite the opposite. To be a minister has three dimensions. A minister is a ‘servant' literally. We minister to the Lord, to one another and to the world. We understand some people's ministry is more ‘Church centric', for others it is very much in the market place. We hope that for most people ministry is ‘both and'!The phrase ‘ministry to the Lord' sounds a bit quaint. What does it actually mean?I use the phrase ‘God loves to turn victims into ministers' as I think about people in the Bible and in my experience who have been able to be used by God despite (and sometimes because of) where they have come from. Is there anything that disqualifies us from being ministers?Ministry is for everyone but everyone should be equipped or trained as Ephesians 4 puts it. Where do you feel drawn to minister? What equipping do you need?As we re-open Church post pandemic, there are many needs in our Church programmes for volunteers, or ‘ministers'. What needs are you aware of at Woodlands? Why do you think there was such generosity in the Church as described in Acts 4: 32-36.What do you think the impact of the Church's charitable work is on its witness into the world? What is your definition of poverty? Where would you find that kind of poverty in Bristol? The Galatians passage seems to indicate care for the poor as being absolutely central in Church planting. How does Woodlands ‘care for the poor'?Care for the poor is for everyone, part of the normal Christian life, what coaching or equipping do you need to help you in this ministry? What should the proportion be of caring for the poor inside the Church, as opposed to those outside of it, from the perspective of the New Testament? How has the work of the Holy Spirit in your life hanged your attitude towards generosity?

Our Faith family must pursue honesty before God and one another to live out all that God has intended. A redemptive community must recognize their desperate need for God, and has a deep level of honesty & vulnerability. We will find power, comfort, and grace in honesty before God and one another. Our Redemptive Family (3)Honesty and TransparencyJames 5:13-161. Take a look at the research from BARNA https://www.barna.com/.../relationships-build-resilient.../ What surprises you? What challenges you? 2. Why is it hard to be vulnerable/transparent with others? What is stopping you? What do you think you would benefit by having a couple close relationships where you could be fully transparent? 3. What stops us from living out James 5:13-16? 4. What do you think outsiders would think if they walked into our small groups or worship gathering and saw the honesty and vulnerability from James 5:13-16? How would that help the gospel flourishing? 5. Transparency before others starts with being transparent before God. Is there something your need to lay at God’s feet? Is there a sin to confess, a burden you are holding on to, or brokenness you are experiencing? 6. What is one thing you are going to apply to your life from today’s scripture and message?

True compassion doesn't stand still, but moves towards action.Who He Is [Week 2]Matthew 9:35-39If Jesus is known for compassion… what are we known for? What is the church known for? How are we as Christ followers showing compassion? How could we do better? Where would Jesus be today? Where should you be today? Share a ministry opportunity you’ve had the that opened your eyes to the great spiritual needs around you. How might you pursue such opportunities in the near future? Do the massive spiritual needs of the world compel you to action or make you feel helpless? DNOW MAKE IT MATTER Acts 7Take a moment to read through Acts 7. What are some things that surprise you? What is something you take away from this scripture? How are you actively apart of His story right now? If you are not engaging in God’s story right now, what needs to change? What is holding you back from living on mission? Has there ever been a moment where you didn’t listen to a prompting of the Holy Spirit? What might be God leading you towards right now? Stephen had no clue how his step of obedience would impact the kingdom of Christ. The gospel scattering to the nations. The conversion of Saul to Paul and the flourishing of the church. What circumstances do you think God could be using now to impact the Kingdom of God? In what ways do you hope God will use your life? If you are doing this with another person would you pray for three things over them.1) That they would engage in God’s story.2) They would be sensitive to the Spirit and God at work in our lives.3) They would have a life of eternal impact.

We can all tend to forget, or move past things quickly and so easily. So as we celebrate the birth of Jesus through the Christmas season, we also should be reminding ourselves of the death and resurrection of Christ. Communion is not something we do only in remembrance as we look back. Communion is something that helps to unify us, focus us, and is a constant reminder of the Gospel we so desperately need.Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:17-341) Pause and reflect on this past year. What is something that you learned about yourself? What did you learn about God? What did God want you to learn from the events of this past year? As you reflect on this be sure to grab a journal or note pad and write down some of these things2) Why is unity among the body of Christ so important? How does communion bring us together? 3) What about reflection is difficult? But why is important? As you reflect on Christ and your life is there anything significant you would be willing to share?4) When thinking about the Gospel what excites you the most? What are you most thankful for? Take a moment to thank God for this gift! 5) As we enter into a new year consider creating a new family rhythm of doing communion together… this could be at a meal weekly, or once a month. Consider the joy of reflecting on the gospel together as a family.

We hope you enjoy Christmas with us!Remember, our 7pm service is also looking at this topic, and Matt Dobson will be sharing with us. Check it out!STUDY NOTESThe four gospels each give a particular perspective on the life of Jesus. Unlike Matthew and Luke John’s gospel doesn’t give a nativity account. His gospel starts with the perspective of the eternal relationship between God and the Word, or as we understand that, the Father and the Son. The incarnation is introduced in those terms ‘the Word became flesh’ so we have no doubt that the Jesus we worship is also divine.Big idea: The word becoming flesh speaks of a ‘divine humility’ which is staggering! Is your view of God big enough to grasp the immensity of this act?In what way are human beings ‘in darkness’? Is that true for our present age as well as 1st Century Palestine? How is the darkness affected by Jesus becoming human? Why did so many of the highly religious, biblically educated people of Jesus time fail to recognise Him?Jesus ‘incarnate’ reveals to us exactly what God is like, (e.g. that God can self-limit, embrace suffering, allow his will not to be done for the sake of giving us the opportunity to freely turn to him and know him). How does your understanding of Go and relationship with Him resonate with those truths?Jesus once said to his followers ‘You are the light of the World’. How can we be that light today? Jesus commissioned his followers (e.g. Paul in Acts 26) to call people from darkness to light. Ask God to show you how you can point people to Jesus this Christmas.

DISCUSSION NOTESINTRODUCTION | Read Acts 15Much of the New Testament wrestles with issues around inclusion- of the Gentiles becoming part of the (Jewish heritage) people of God. Acts 15 is a key chapter exploring how the early Church managed to incorporate the Gentiles into the Christian family and how they were willing to modify deeply held and cherished practices in the light of what God was doing and deeper revelation and understanding of their mission and calling. STUDY QUESTIONSWhat is the difference between ‘welcome’ and ‘inclusion’?What inclusion issues are there for the Church today? What principles guided practices towards inclusion in Chapter 15 of Acts? How do we in our small groups make space for and include people? What is our strategy for this? How central to our purpose is growth, welcome and inclusion? What biblical guidelines are there for inclusion while holding on to key non negotiables? What might ‘non-negotiables’ be in your understanding?

Jesus had such a strong understand of abiding in the Father and 'only doing what I see the Father doing'. He calls and invites His followers to have that sort of relationship with Him.How do I remain in Christ, or rather what might cause me to cease abiding in Christ, as a Church community or an individual? ( For the early Church their Christ Centred, Cross Centred 'abiding' focus was key to them not slipping back into fruitless legalism. But modern Churches can become centred on a cause rather than centred on Christ and like the Church in Ephesus in Revelation 2, lose their first love). As an individual how do spiritual disciplines help me live out a moment by moment abiding, connecting with Christ? How does the work of and presence of the Spirit keep me abiding in Christ? Can good things be the enemy of the best, or can temptation and idolatry pull me away? The parable of the sower is a metaphor for abiding; the good soil 'retains' the seed.Abiding sounds peaceful. How can meditation and Christian mindfulness play its part in an abiding life? How can we abide when things are busy, crazy or scary?
